FLASHBACK: In July, McCain Promised His VP Pick Would Appear On Larry King Live

Earlier today, ThinkProgress noted that since becoming Sen. John McCain’s (R-AZ) running mate, Gov. Sarah Palin has rarely taken questions from the press. The McCain campaign is increasingly shielding her from formal interviews with the media, saying that it will “do what we think is in our best interest.” Today, the Atlantic’s Marc Ambinder notes:

A senior McCain campaign official advises that, despite the gaggle of requests and pressure from the media, Gov. Sarah Palin won’t submit to a formal interview anytime soon. She may take some questions from local news entities in Alaska, but until she’s ready — and until she’s comfortable — which might not be for a long while — the media will have to wait.

McCain is breaking a promise he made on national television. In July, during an interview with CNN’s Larry King, McCain assured King that his running mate would appear on King’s show shorty after his announcement:

KING: We have a history on this program that whenever the vice presidential nominee is announced, he or she appears on this show the next night. It’s been going on for quite a while. We hope that Senator McCain follows that tradition since I have a hunch he will not announce tonight who that candidate is.

But how close are we?

MCCAIN: I want to say that that vice presidential candidate will be on your show. I will not risk the wrath of Larry King. I want to assure you.

Watch it:

In fact, instead of honoring his word and granting King exclusive access, McCain recently canceled an interview with the newsman as punishment for a tough CNN interview with a campaign spokesperson.

Digg It!

A McCain promise is an empty promise.

    Just like Bush the Uniter.

  2. Leftside Annie Says:

    Wow. Grampaw lied.

    Color me surprised.

    Not.

  3. TPR Says:

"until she’s ready — and until she’s comfortable — which might not be for a long while — the media will have to wait."

Holy Frijole! Is that actually their statement? How many people can they convince that she's ready to be VP but not ready to do an interview? Criminy.

  4. DutchHenry Says:

Maybe McCain forgot he made the promise, how old is McCain again ?We don't need this kind of Character with his finger on the button. For chrissakes!the guy(McCain) thinks it still 1968.

  5. RUCerious Says:

Oh hell, July was what, two months ago! There's no way in hell McIIIrd's gonna remember something way back in history like that. Quit picking on him, he was a POW!

  6. RUCerious Says:

The Wrath of Larry King? BWAHAHAHAH!!
What, he's going to squirt you with his trick suspender boutaineer?

  7. southrnbelle Says:

    COWARDS, ALL OF THEM!!!!!!!!!

  8. Art Says:

    The real reason...
Maybe she can't stand up to a one-on-one interview without a teleprompter to help her?

  9. Fan of Man Says:

If she can't face larry king, how is she gonna face osama still hiden?

  10. Wayne A. Schneider Says:

Well she already gave an interview to Newsmax, so why is she snubbing Larry King? Could it have something to do with that contentious interview Larry had with a guest (and Ben Stein) a few days ago over the 9/11 hijackers?

  11. Zimzone Says:

Oh, McPalin can speak, alright; that's the problem. She would flap those botoxed lips 'till Hell won't have her on any subject . Therein lies the problem. How can they shut her up?

Maybe Perino's giving her foreign history lessons...

  12. Roket Says:

Refusing interviews is not punishing the press. It’s political suicide. GD idiots.

  13. Count Istvan Says:

It's time for straight talk my friends. McCain sucks ass.

  14. bob hussein lablah Says:

What were they saying about Hillary not being strong enough to play with the "big boys"?

    DOUBLE STANDARD DOUBLE STANDARD

  15. desertflower1 Says:

Promise???Means absolutely NOTHING to him. The word isn't even in his vocabulary. Don't believe a damn thing he says. If he opens his mouth, it's a lie.

  16. RUCerious Says:

And she's ready to lead ______ on day ???????

The PTA, next month? Would she need an administrator like she did when she mayored the crap out of Wassilla?

  17. enaud Says:

"as punishment for a tough CNN interview with a campaign spokesperson."

With all due respect, I didn't think that was a "tough" interview. The guy just had shit on his face, and he looked it and smelled it.

  18. Bob Says:

but until she’s ready — and until she’s comfortable — which might not be for a long while —

But she's ready to be VP?
    WTF?!?!

  19. Shayne Says:

Slapshot Sarah will be ready the day after the election.

  20. tarazan Says:

MCCAIN : "Well,Larry,She was going to come to your show, face your wrath..but after we took her for a ride in our 'Striaght Talk Express' bus, she changed her mind, I wonder why?!!"

  21. Shayne Says:

You're right Zimzone, she didn't stop talking once during McCain's speech yesterday and then when she was on stage with him she was still talking. At one point she seemed to be explaining something to Cindy. I give it a week until Cindy is ready to rip her head off.

  22. Shayne Says:

The only thing stopping them is fear. Typical Republican cowards.

  23. Bob Says:

Do the McCain campaign officials speak for the McCain campaign? Are they really saying she's not ready?

I wish I could say that this is getting ridiculous. It was ridiculous a while ago.

  24. Shayne Says:

Their excuse is that Palin just got the job and how soon did Biden come out and start doing interviews after he got the not. Are they joking. The only time Joe stopped talking was when he knew the job was his and was trying not to spill it. He's been doing interviews for 20 years.

  25. had enough Says:

The Mcinasane campaign has been full of holes, lies from the beginning.
If Palin is only allowed to run on image brought on by the righties, then please come clean with this issue:

Did Palin really give a speech after her water broke then flew all the way to Alaska to deliver or is she lying and is not the mother of the 4 month old? As Randi R would say I do not need this vision in my Rolodex.... a vision of an unclean child abuser.

  26. Shayne Says:

Satirev, dhe definitely looked butch this morning with all the thumbs up crap. I think she forgot she's not at a hockey game.

But it probably isn't such a good idea for McCain to keep beating up the media since they so kindly dropped the Vicky Iseman scandal. I guess some disgruntled writer should go track her down and find out why she disappeared.

  27. Wayne A. Schneider Says:

He now can’t trust her to stay on script just like she did during her convention speech. He’s petrified of what she will say or what buffoonery she may come up in outing her lack of knowledge of foreign policy, the military, the machinations of congress, the process of lawmaking, and the list goes on.

That's funny, because I was thinking that the McCain campaign feels the exact same way about McCain.

  28. Mr Blifil Says:

Bwaahhh! Now the manufactured tantrum over mean mean Campbell Brown makes perfect sense. They had the "straight talker's" promise in mind. It was no accident that of all people Larry King get the preemptive thumb in the eye.

They're good, you gotta hand it to them.

  29. ljm Says:

All of the TV media types are continuing to hammer the talking headless paid Repubs on her being interviewed!

Everyone needs to keep pushing them, and embarrassing them like the posts above, even if we start stuff like "Hero, coward, make her speak!" "We thought she was READY!" "Come on Hero, Country First? Let her speak!"

What does she have to fear? After all she attended 5 colleges/Jr. colleges in 6 years. She must know something!

We can't let this go!!! Remember Dan (fore!) Quayle?

  30. Zimzone Says:

It really disturbed me to see the little Down's Syndrome infant basically 'tossed' by Dad to the 5 yr. old so he could stand up & wave his arms.

5 yr. olds don't know how to handle infants.

Apparently, neither does Dad. But, the pregnant daughter holding an infant just wouldn't have been 'good press'.

Grandma Palin is in hiding. I bet she's still yapping...

  31. margerine Says:

Wait...? He might have lied? I'm certainly surprised. Really.

  32. acv Says:

The country has less then two months to get to know Palin, who if elected would be the VP to the oldest man ever elected president. Say what you want about Palin vs. Obama in the experience area but at least Obama has been under a microscope for over a year now. This whole thing is bizarre

  33. Shayne Says:

You hadn't hear satirev, that she was having contractions and leaking amniotic fluid with a baby she claims she knew had down syndrome and was a month early. First she gave her speech, then she flew 8 hours with a stopover in Washington, and then she drove by two hospitals with neonatal units to drive to her local doctor another hour away. Somebody had that baby but I doubt it was her since nobody noticed she was pregnant. My guess is it's Todd's though.

  34. The Republic of Stupidity Says:

Ya gotta hand it to them GOOPers... they sure know how to peddle some serious BS w/ a straight face.

  35. Shayne Says:

Really Zimzone, why exactly did that baby need to be hauled out with all those people and all those germs. Couldn't they find a sitter for him to stay safely at the hotel or at least in a dressing room.

  36. had enough Says:

    satirev Says:

Had enough: As a mother myself, I also do need this visual. To me it reeks of abuse and egomania. Everything for me and my power mongering; to hell with this special needs child! Wow! I hadn’t heard that.
    September 5th, 2008 at 4:38 pm

And there is also the issue of cleanliness... how does one get up in front of a crowd with possibilities of uncontrollable seepage of body fluid?
My computer was down for a week ... maybe I missed something... but for now every time I look at that woman she appears dirty.

  37. RUCerious Says:

Today, McIIIrd is saying it's over, it's over for the special interests.
Translation ~ It's over, they win.

  39. Shayne Says:

satirev, they whisked GHW Bush's girlfriend out of the country when people started asking about her. Iseman is probably hidden in the same place.

  40. pete Says:

I seriously doubt that Flippy was even consulted about Ms. Palin. His lust for the Presidency has driven him around the bend and anyone with half a brain cell can see it. His "advisors" are running the show to the least word and gesture.

I still think her choice is simply to keep the psychochritians in a bunch until the bitter memory of Bushco has begun to fade in 20 years, or so. And sheltering a candidate from the press is, if the "advisers" really intend to try and win this thing, idiotic in the extreme.

No, they are not afraid that Ms. Palin will drive sane people away. The fear is that the press won't be able to hide their contempt and just might manage to make her unpalatable to the hardcore 20%.

I would bet even money that the only purpose behind the whole "McCain" campaign is to keep the religious nuts in the fold until the moderate majority grows complacent, again.

  41. katy Says:

In fact, instead of honoring his word and granting King exclusive access, McCain recently canceled an interview...

well, he is all about "change", larry...

  42. Max-1 Says:

    Troops home
    Ending the Iraq occupation
    Administrative accountability
    Repealing the Patriot Act
    Defending the Bill of Rights

    ... HELLO!!!

    .

  43. spencers mom Says:

McCain is lying, stealing and refusing access to his perceived critics. Palin is obstructing justice in an abuse of power investigation.

Don't they know that they should at least wait until after they take office?

I bet these two jumped the cafeteria line, too.

    PEACE

  44. Bilbo Hussein Baggins Says:

The McCain campaign is increasingly shielding her from formal interviews with the media, saying that it will “do what we think is in our best interest.”

This is what I find appalling. They will "do what we think is in our best interest", and if that includes lying of obfuscating, then we'll damn well do it because our best interest comes before the best interest of this country.

    Country first, my a$$.

  45. Bob Says:

Cramming for tests doesn't help. In fact, people who cram tend to do worse than those that don't study at all. You either know it or you don't. I don't know what they're worried about, anyway. The media only throws softballs, underhanded to boot.

  46. robbez_92107 Says:

  47. ljm Says:

Now is there something about HER not selling the plane on EBAY? What's next?

It's clear that she's not talking until they have cleansed her record with "the delete button."

This is the best soap opera ever! Am I dreaming?

    _______

Apparently she put it up for sale on eBay, but nobody actually bought it:

AMY GOODMAN: Well, let’s talk about indictments and her relationship. It has been portrayed nationally here as one where she was critical of her own party, broke ranks with Ted Stevens, the senator, his congressman son, Don Young. Then it turned out she was head of a 527 committee for Ted Stevens. Shannyn, can you explain?

SHANNYN MOORE: I can, but I will tell you that I completely attribute her winning the election to two things. One was that Frank Murkowski was absolutely a miserable governor and went from being, you know, elected several times as a senator to being elected as governor and then losing in the primary to Sarah Palin. He only got 19 percent of the vote as an incumbent who had served Alaska for, you know, many decades. That was part of his sort of—his sort of charm, let’s just say, that wore off. He bought a jet that, you know, the legislature had told him not to. He went ahead and did it anyway. And that was mentioned last night in Sarah’s speech, that she put it on eBay. And I would say that the state lost $600,000, I believe was the amount by the time that was done. It didn’t sell on eBay, by the way. She did list it.

And the other thing was, Ted Stevens swooped in in the last several days of the election, like the very crucial time, and said, “I’m not going to be able to open ANWR if Sarah Palin isn’t governor,” and did all these ad campaigns, just this media blitz of Ted Stevens in the last couple days. Ted Stevens helped her secure her election, very much so, and said, “You know, I’ve worked with Sarah before, and I need her in Juneau to help me in Washington to open ANWR.” And that is the carrot for so many people here. But she did in 2003 work in a 527 group that raised, you know, huge funds from corporate donors for Ted Stevens, and it was called the Ted Stevens Excellence in Public Service Inc., which is remarkable now looking at his seven indictments. But she served as one of three directors under his—under this sort of flag of collecting money from corporate interests.

    #58 satirev,
I don't disagree with you. Yes, McCain's tactics are manipulative...
    ... But what's new?

The Dem's are no different as illustrated in my post.

    I mean, COME ON PEOPLE!!!

The "opposition Party" has been supported by the "Liberals" for a few decades now and as is evidenced most recently, the Dem Party acts no different than the GOP on flip flopping on key issues. Heck, Obama said he wasn't gonna do interviews with FOX... but did anyway.

Sure McCain promised to let his V.P. pick do Larry King and now is scurrying away... and pointing fingers at this does what to hide the fact that the Democratic Party still is selling America out?

I mean, what good does it do to point and laugh at the clown, when you're wearing a big red nose and floppy shoes but to distract from harsh realities?

WHY DON'T "LIBERAL" BLOG SITES HOLD "LIBERAL" CANDIDATES FEET TO THE FIRE?
WHY DON'T "LIBERAL" BLOG SITES HOLD "LIBERAL" CANDIDATES ACCOUNTABLE FOR UNDERMINING AMERICA?

She didn't sell the plane on EBAY!!!! She lied!!! If she can lie on just ONE thing while facing the whole world then what can we believe? This joke will enter the history books under the category of shame.
She didn't write the speech she read either.

  52. Shayne Says:

Hadn't thought about that had enough, even in the trendelenburg position her water was likely to rupture any time after she started leaking. That's impressive during a speech don't you think.

  58. nobillary Says:

The interview that John McCain took exception to had nothing to do with how his spokeman was treated; he's just using it as his excuse because he knows that Sarah Palin IS NOT ready to be VP on Day One! He has to have Joe Lieberman teach her about the Middle East?? He has to have his staff make sure she's on the same page with McCain before she faces the press? That's SO funny! Imagine the hue and cry if Barack Obama told everyone Joe Biden wouldn't be available for interviews until he's brought up to speed.

If she's such a prepared Republican, why doesn't she already know what John McCain believes and stands for? He "hired" her to be the pitbull that goes after Sen Obama and nothing more. Nope; she not ready.

  59. lurker Says:

ljm It looks like their going to have hard time scrubbing her record. Apparently the was 63 pages of vetting done or her in

She tried to sell the plane on EBAY but, it didn't sell.
She did sell it at a 500k loss. Mc Cain when telling
the story about selling the plane on EBAY (which she didn't)
said "and she made a profit"

  60. drago Says:

What a pussy. He can't even talk some other old white guy now.

  64. pete Says:

Has any candidate for national office EVER been secluded from the Press for days after being announced? Maybe "the campaign" will send them out of the country until this "little election thing" blows over? Or, perhaps, they'll just shack-up on Cindy's plane?

  65. Paul W Says:

She may take some questions from local news entities in Alaska, but until she’s ready — and until she’s comfortable — which might not be for a long while — the media will have to wait.

So she's not ready to answer some questions but she is ready to possibly run the country?

    http://progressiveworldreview.com

  66. NoMoreBush Says:

The longer she stays secluded the more wary the public will become, particularly with Obama and Biden out there in the public. It's a terribly foolish (but likely necessary) ploy. I mean, after 19 months and 19 debates, people were, "well I just don't know Obama." Do you think this seclusion away from the press with so many unanswered questions will play well. Every day that she is not being interviewed is another day the opposition will define her.

  67. Leftside Annie Says:

Well, obviously, the NeoCon.v.IIIB programming on her implant is not complete yet.

  68. bigeugene Says:

Putting Sarah Palin in front of the media to answer actual questions would put the real Sarah Palin (earmarker, investigation dodger, fiscally problematic as mayor, vindictavewoman) at odds with the Mythical Sarah Palin (reformer, experienced, tax cutter, superwoman) narrative they are trying to create.

They will fight unscripted/unchoreographed appearances the entire way.

  69. bigeugene Says:

Someone who can't answer questions from the media is not fit to be Vice President, not to mention PRESIDENT!
