Ever since Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) announced Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin (R) as his running mate, conservatives have rushed to rebut criticism that Palin has no foreign policy experience by claiming that Alaska is near Russia. Fox News’s Steve Doocy appears to be one of the first to make this claim and even McCain and his wife Cindy have uttered the absurd talking point. But today on Fox News, a “Republican strategist” laid out the specifics of this Russia/Alaska rivalry — fishing:
GREGG JARRETT: In what capacity has she worked with Russia?
TYLER HARBER: She worked with permitting issues and with fishing issues dealing with the sea fishing industry there in Alaska.
Watch it:
Jarrett didn’t seem to take the bait. “Oh, come on. That’s a far cry from major international experience.”
Transcript:
GREGG JARRETT: She has no national security issue – experience. It’s pretty brave of that campaign to put her out there on that, isn’t it?
TYLER HARBER (GOP strategist): It is. You know, one of the things we – one of the most important things that we tell our clients in the political realm is, “Do not be reactive.” If you become reactive, you are going to lose.
I think what you saw last night was Obama being reactive. Current polling shows him trailing McCain when it comes to trust about national security, trust about the war in Iraq, and trust about the war on terrorism. What you are seeing is the Obama campaign becoming reactive.
Now as far as Sarah’s comments, Sarah has dealt with, and has more experience from an administrative standpoint than Obama has. She has visited the Middle East as many times
JARRETT: But she has no foreign policy experience. She doesn’t know anything about —
HARBER: But she does. She does have foreign policy experience.
JARRETT: She does?
HARBER: Now let me point out, she’s worked with Russia – she’s worked with Russia on fishing issues. She’s worked with Canada on transportation issues.
JARRETT: In what capacity has she worked with Russia?
HARBER: She worked with permitting issues and with fishing issues dealing with the sea fishing industry there in Alaska.
JARRETT: Oh, come on. That’s a far cry from major international experience.
HARBER: But that’s still more experience than Obama has.
JARRETT: You guys are going to have a field day with that right? Mary Anne?
DEM STRATIGIST: That’s laughable.
Fishy issues? Now that sounds Republican. But as Alaska Governor Sarah has fish to sell.
That could be the reason she minimized the Exxon Valdez’s 10.8 million gallon crude oil spill, calling it an 11,000 gallon fuel spill. No one wants to buy oil tainted fish, even Russians!
September 5th, 2008 at 5:05 pmJebus! Are they serious??
Oh, never mind. It’s FUX. Of course they are. :o/

September 5th, 2008 at 5:07 pmActually, Palin is a lamprey on Obama. Nearly every derision of Sarah is met with:
“That’s more experience than Obama has.”
The Repugnicant campaign is a jucking foke. Help me get through the next 60 days…
September 5th, 2008 at 5:07 pmHey, keep your vodka swilling hands offa my salmon!
Good Gucking Frief!
September 5th, 2008 at 5:08 pmGive it time. Just like all of the other half baked examples of her foreign relations expertise by osmosis or proximity, this will be debunked as well. Evidence will show, just like the national guard, either she didn’t or no one in her admin was responsible for this type of relations.
As if coastal states have more authority over international waters than the federal gov. It sounds bunk already.
It is so transparent. Like anything along the lines of proximity is going to convince Americans of international experience.
September 5th, 2008 at 5:08 pmThe constitution says only the federal govt can deal with these type issues anyways. If she negotiated fishing “treaties”, I think she broke the law. no?
September 5th, 2008 at 5:12 pmI went to Cancun once.
Does that mean I’m qualified to be Vice President?
September 5th, 2008 at 5:13 pmI can see this working. What, w/ the rethug base being made up mostly bottom feeders and suckers.
September 5th, 2008 at 5:13 pmDo they have a position of ‘moose catcher’ in Wasilla?
September 5th, 2008 at 5:17 pmIf so, she’s definitely qualified for that. Although she’d need to hire an administrator to actuall run the moose pound.
miatch Says:

September 5th, 2008 at 5:18 pmOnce again, ‘Acey’ Doocey takes absurdity past its natural boundary, to that place we call,
the toilet zone.
September 5th, 2008 at 5:19 pmCurrent polling shows him trailing McCain when it comes to trust about national security, trust about the war in Iraq, and trust about the war on terrorism.
Whose polls, Republicans polls of registered Republican voters? What would they know about the facts?
Watch for this kind of linguistic shenanigans. If pressed about which poll it was, he might have said that it was from a very partisan source, but since he wasn’t asked (maybe it was a Fox News Poll?), this distortion of reality can continue.
If such a poll exists, it was not taken on people who know the issues.
September 5th, 2008 at 5:19 pmMy buddy was an observer on a Korean vessel fishing the Bering back in the day, I think I will write him in and since just last night I cut fish from Sri Lanka, Vietnam, Ecuador, and Chile, and a whole bunch of other nations, I figure it would be reasonable for him to consider me as his vp or maybe Secretary of State at least…
September 5th, 2008 at 5:20 pmFor sixteen months.
That’s how long she’s done these important National Guard fishing fleet issues. Sixteen months.
And notice how they’re trying to stick ‘executive’ in where it’s not wanted. Ask about foreign policy experience and it’s ‘executive’ foreign policy experience.
And the problem isn’t Sarah Palin. It’s these guys. They wheel on a dime, and suddenly what they sneered at is what they cheer for.
Much more so than Sarah’s inexperience, because when John Sevenhomes chokes to death on a donut, who’s going to be in charge?
Not Bristol’s mom. These guys.
And America won’t survive any more of their rule.
September 5th, 2008 at 5:20 pmSince Gregg Jarrett left CourtTV, he’s been much more conservative. I’m surprised that he’s not only not buying the argument, but that he’s actually saying so.

If she’s a myth, like Paul Bunyan or Bigfoot, then others will have to perpetuate it.
September 5th, 2008 at 5:24 pmWhen is someone going to point out that Alaska is a welfare state?
Alaskans get free $$ checks every year from the “Alaska Permanent Fund” – oil royalties the state charges for drilling on the North Slope.
This year, Palin is going to give everyone a little over $2,000.
September 5th, 2008 at 5:24 pmSince McIIIrd’s advisors are all lobbyists, how is he planning to cut them out once he’s elected?
September 5th, 2008 at 5:24 pmDammit Leftside Annie, if you can run for vice president, I want to be an economic adviser. After all, I live across the street from a bank and I go there often to do important things. Yea, like…like cash checks.

September 5th, 2008 at 5:27 pm“GOP strategist: Palin’s foreign policy experience stems from ‘fishing issues’ with Russia.”
Spare me. We are now back to the Alaska-Russia connection on foreign policy experience of Palin? Fox News sound more clownish everyday. File this article next to the catagory: Where is bigfoot? I heard Zelllieberman is tutoring Sarah on foreign policy. Joe Six Pack certainly thumbed his nose to the Democratic constitents in Connecticut. I hope that state get on ball and sent a clear message to the Independent Democrat to vote Obama in and strip Joe of his “I am a Independent Democrat” committee position in the Senate.
September 5th, 2008 at 5:32 pmIt is no wonder why the righties want to hide this woman from the media.
September 5th, 2008 at 5:33 pmRepublicans got themselves in trouble repeating what Doocy is saying.
September 5th, 2008 at 5:33 pmDoocy does nothing but a 3rd rated morning comedy for Fox news everyday.
Watching Doocy, you don’t laugh, you don’t learn..but you might cry.
I hope that state get on ball and sent a clear message to the Independent Democrat to vote Obama in and strip Joe of his “I am a Independent Democrat” committee position in the Senate.
If they do that before the next Congress is sworn in, Joe will jump to the Republican side and give them a majority for Bush’s last few weeks in office.

Wait a minute! Whatever issues Alaska has with Russia over fishing–if that’s even true–they would be decided between the Russian government and the U.S. government. They would not be handled at the state level. Or is she claiming secessionist AIP rights to negotiate with foreign powers?
September 5th, 2008 at 5:38 pmI want to know what fishing McCain did after his acceptance speech. The video feed showed him greeting a line of people near the stage. Who were they and how much did they pony up for the honor to shake his hand on prime time?
I especially want to know who the Asian man he greeted first. The whole time McCain looked like he was barely containing an explosion. Why?
September 5th, 2008 at 5:40 pmHey, y’all are being so unfair to Sarah!
Let me tell you, last night was “back to school night” at my kid’s elementary school. If you think the PTA is not a tough crowd, you’ve never sat through the tough talk about fundraising proposals and after school pick up car flow.
And fishing permits? I know for a fact that many of the PTA women have husbands who fish, fishwives, if you will, so these permit seeking men are an angry, frustrated bunch.
So, if Sarah can take on the politics of the PTA, and the angry fisherman who want permits, she is tops in my book!

No State shall, without the Consent of Congress, lay any Duty of Tonnage, keep Troops, or Ships of War in time of Peace, enter into any Agreement or Compact with another State, or with a foreign Power, or engage in War, unless actually invaded, or in such imminent Danger as will not admit of delay.

September 5th, 2008 at 5:54 pmAngry McAngus, the good Korean Reverend was my first thought. I posted it last night on another thread, but hoped to check tape this morning.
Guess what? The YouTube version ends before John’s handshaking walk around the floor in front of the stage.
September 5th, 2008 at 5:59 pmGoofy Republicans are fishing without any bait on this issue. Palin has zero (0) foreign policy experience, period. End of discussion.
September 5th, 2008 at 6:01 pmOh, Wayne A. The Constitution? You’re using the U.S. Constitution as your basis for a legitimate argument?
It’s just a piece of paper!
Alaska is our first line of defense should Russia invade via the Bering Staits. They can’t be held back by the Constitution.

September 5th, 2008 at 6:01 pmKaty, the highway trust fund being broke coincided with Sec. Chertoff’s talk on maintaining key homeland security infrastructure.
The Bushies are vectoring on allowing private investment in public infrastructure projects.
Chertie can deride government’s tendency to not maintain existing infrastructure but he won’t say anything about Bush’s aversion to taxes.
When I hear the Romney’s, Brownback’s and Huckabee’s say “to those with more, more is expected,” somehow that doesn’t include taxes.
September 5th, 2008 at 6:01 pmThe Goofy old Republicans have just hooked and reeled in an old rubber boot with their fishing expedition in a vain attempt to give Palin some “foreign policy experience.”

But today’s world problems are much bigger than PTA problems, they require knowledge of cultures, religions, histories of other nations.
They require knowledge of the make up and fabric of these nations. A knowledge of world economics is also a must.
I don’t think Sarah passed such test.
I think officials should be tested like other fields’ seekers about what they know with regard to other countries.
Requirements to fill the top post in our government are at minimum of any other job’s requirment.
-President need to be US citizen, over 35 years of age- . That’s is not enough…he or she should be tested to see what he knows.
The problems of failed foreign policies due to lack of knowledge of foreign countries by our officials represnt the highest cost of any other cost item in dollars to our budget.
If Bush knew something about Iraq, that apparently he did not know, we would not be in Iraq today.
I wonder if Sarah PTA’s and fishing experiences will be of any help to her or to USA in dealing with Putin of Russia or other foreign leaders. !!
September 5th, 2008 at 6:09 pmThe “experience” issue is a red herring to begin with. But if you want to run with that; Obama has Biden’s foreign policy experience to back him up and if something were to happen to Obama, Biden would be plenty prepared to step in. But if something were to happen to McCain does anybody, Republicans included, think Palin is qualified to run the country?

September 5th, 2008 at 8:04 pmDid she teach them how to bait their hooks too? That would be a big plus in her favor.
September 5th, 2008 at 8:26 pmBut I do like the way the Dem Strategist in the transcript apparently doesn’t have a name, but still manages to say the only intelligible thing in the whole exchange, namely: “That’s laughable.”
September 5th, 2008 at 8:30 pmAs a mayor, Palin ran her city into debt. Sounds like the Republican ways.
September 5th, 2008 at 8:37 pmOh, yes the residents of that state happen to get a check EVERY year. This year, according to the Anchorage newspaper, it will be exactly $3,269.00 per person. September 5th, 2008 at 9:16 pmIt’s funny, but this claim that Palin has negotiated fishing rights seems to have just appeared online in the last week. I’ve tried to find out where it actually comes from, and the only mentions of it I can find are in the comments sections of various blogs and websites.
As has been mentioned here, if true, it would be a clear violation of the Logan Act, which prevents private citizens from negotiating treaties with foreign powers. So the only way the GOP can rebut claims of Palin’s inexperience in foreign policy matters…is to claim that she has committed a federal felony.
