In her speech on Wednesday night, Sarah Palin attacked journalists for scrutinizing her record. “I’ve learned quickly, these past few days, that if you’re not a member in good standing of the Washington elite,” she said, “then some in the media consider a candidate unqualified for that reason alone.”
During an interview with ThinkProgress in St. Paul yesterday, MSNBC host Joe Scarborough told us, “The McCain campaign has made a very calculated decision they’re going to run against the press. Personally, I don’t think it works.” He continued:
Attacking the press for conservatives, for Republicans, it always provides a sugar high. It excites the base. It is never ever worth the pay off. … Don’t engage in a war. I think McCain’s campaign is making a mistake. Because that never pays off in the end.
But, they’ve adopted that strategy. Make no mistake of it. They’ve adopted the strategy publicly, privately. They’re fighting behind the scenes. And we’ll see — maybe it works this year. I don’t think so though.
The McCain campaign recently said journalists are creating a “faux media scandal designed to destroy the first female Republican nominee.” In a jeering and sarcastic column this past week, Politico’s Roger Simon wrote, “On behalf of the elite media, I would like to say we are very sorry” for asking basic questions about Palin’s record.
Scarborough said he’s always had a better relationship with the Obama campaign than with the McCain campaign. He added, “The Bush White House — not a big friend of mine. I think they stopped talking to me after Hurricane Katrina.” Watch it:
When Palin was first announced last Friday as John McCain’s vice presidential running mate, Scarborough declared that she had too little foreign policy experience for the job. Earlier this week, ThinkProgress questioned whether Scarborough was backtracking a bit from his initial criticism.
But during the interview yesterday, Scarborough reiterated his initial concerns. In the wake of developments in Georgia and Pakistan, Scarborough said now is “no time to have a vice president that has so little experience. And I still agree with that.” That being said, he added, “she has a remarkable resume.”
That being said, he added, “she has a remarkable resume.”
Um, “remarkable” isn’t quite the word I would use, Joe.
September 5th, 2008 at 9:39 pmThat being said, he added, “she has a remarkable resume.”
And she considerately manages to fit it all on a single page! How thoughtful of her not to burden us with boring details…
September 5th, 2008 at 9:46 pmSarah Palin = Half-baked Alaska…
September 5th, 2008 at 9:48 pmBut, but, McCain doesn’t want Palin to have to answer TOUGH questions. When McCain himself cancels his appearance on Larry King…Larry King, wow. Bring on the debates!
September 5th, 2008 at 9:50 pmWhat is Jo talking about?? He wouldn’t know the real press if it bit him in the ass! He is a LOSER and should be dismissed.

September 5th, 2008 at 9:52 pm“Caribou Barbie!!!’ LOL . . . since when has eating Crepe Suzette at International House of Pancakes in Fairbanks been considered “foreign experience”????
September 5th, 2008 at 9:57 pmThe McCain campaign recently said journalists are creating a “faux media scandal designed to destroy the first female Republican nominee.”
Who’s being sexist now? The media isn’t trying to destroy “the first female Republican nominee” (BTW, what took you guys so long?), they are trying to expose an extremely unqualified person who wants to become vice president. The constitution requires that no one shall be vice president who isn’t qualified to be president. They meant “qualified” by constituttional standards (U.S. citizen, 35+ years old, residency requirement met). But does anyone think Sarah Palin is, by the public’s standards, “qualified” to be president? A lot of people far more qualified than her were already rejected by the public.
September 5th, 2008 at 9:57 pmScags is caught in the middle. He’s Republican whore and he’s a media whore.

If the media were ever to really do their job both McCain and Palin would know it. They should be thankful the media is inept as it is.

September 5th, 2008 at 10:11 pmMcCain and Palin shouldn’t dwell too much on perceived media fabrications and “scrutiny.” They have their hands full trying to explain the truth behind their own words and actions.

September 5th, 2008 at 10:19 pmMost of the people in Alaska like her and her resume` Joe.
But she would like to see Alaska secede from the union. She likes to gather earmarks from the rest of the US taxpayers for her state, which is rolling in oil money. So it appears she is just using us in the lower 48.
She has been reported to have made a racial comment about Obama when he beat out Hillary, and she wasn’t flattering to Hillary either! I don’t know if TP will allow print what she said — it was something like S_mbo beat the b!tch.
If you offend her, her friends, her friends’ friends, you get on her sh!t list. And she can ruin you.
She is a bigot who has publicly used slanderous terms for Eskimos and aboriginal Alaskans.
She is a redneck in a parka.
If Alaskans like her as it appears they do, then much of Alaska must be rednecks also.

Palin is catapulted into starring role
September 5th, 2008 at 10:30 pmFinancial Times – 2 hours ago
By Edward Luce and Andrew Ward It was the loudest and most prolonged cheer since Barack Obama appeared on the podium last week in Denver.
i did hear, from the other room, on bill moyers tonight, that the “palin cut funds to special needs programs” story has been refuted…
September 5th, 2008 at 10:40 pmKathleen Hall Jamieson – on tonight… she said it was checked out at factcheck.org, but i can’t find it there…
something about the funds being allocated under a different name…
By attacking “The Press” (not just verbally but by arresting reporters and cameramen at the convention) is McMansion sending a message/threat to the corporations which own the Press? Will they fall into line? Pass the JuJubees!
September 5th, 2008 at 10:49 pmWell, I’d have to agree with Joe on this one. Palin’s resume is remarkable.
Remarkable, as in conspicuous and worthy of notice, but certainly not remarkable, as in outstanding and impressive.
Yes, I do indeed find Palin’s resume, qualifications, experience, reputation and overall preparedness for assuming the role of the presidency quite remarkable.
But probably not in the way Scarborough and McStain would like. Don’t you agree that the whole Palin pick is remarkable? A remarkably poor decision, demonstrating a remarkable lack of judgement and foresight from a remarkably old Washington insider to pick such a remarkably unqualified, and frankly, remarkably scary person.
PEACE
September 5th, 2008 at 10:53 pmPalin needs to go away, stay in Alaska and let us get on with needed business with knowledgeable true leaders.
September 5th, 2008 at 10:53 pmseriously – we’ve got to get on the ball…
i found this while at factcheck… the whole piece is worth the read, but this part points out a huge gap:
We have yet to see e-mails about John McCain, and Emery notes a decidedly anti-Democrat tilt to the bulk of the e-mail chatter. But there’s still plenty of time before the election. In 2004, a left-leaning e-mail claimed the Bush administration was quietly pushing legislation to reinstate the military draft. The claim was bogus, but the e-mail prompted such paranoia that a GOP-controlled House overwhelmingly voted down a bill to reinstate the draft just to show that it rejected the measure. Snopes has chronicled two claims about McCain – both were true, and one was a positive story.
That Chain E-mail Your Friend Sent to You Is (Likely) Bogus. Seriously.
September 5th, 2008 at 10:55 pmhttp://www.factcheck.org/specialreports/that_chain_e-mail_your_friend_sent_to.html
Let’s be serious for a minute. If Palin is not ready to even talk to the press, can she possibly be ready to be VP, much less a heartbeat from the Presidency?
We here a lot of tough talk from the Repubs, but this is shameful and cowardly.
September 5th, 2008 at 10:56 pmThe GOP has always used this strategy…when you have nothing to offer, make sh*t up. If the American people are dumb enough to buy into this faux charge, they deserve for this nation to disolve under the leadership of McBush. What did the thugs say about issues at the RNC? Not a damned thing. All they have are phoney charges of the press doing what McDumb didn’t do, vet this filthy mouthed broad. That is the job of the media when the republican candidate is so incompetent.
September 5th, 2008 at 11:01 pmHow soon will Palin be ‘debating’ Joe Biden? Has a date been set? Is she in hiding because she’s being given a crash course in civics, history, geography, etc.? It shouldn’t take her long to memorize McStained-My-Pants-Again’s list of accomplishments, anyway.
September 5th, 2008 at 11:03 pmScarborough does have his moments of lucidity. Not often enough, but it does happen occasionally.
This is going to be fun seeing how the McCain camp will be able to hide Ms. Sarah from the press. The more they try to hide her the more the press will try to out her. This is a challenge even to the corporate controlled MSM.
September 5th, 2008 at 11:03 pmI hope that some guest asks Joe if their teenage daughter gets knocked-up by a high school hockey player can they be called “hockey moms,” too?
September 5th, 2008 at 11:04 pmJane E. Schneider Says:
How soon will Palin be ‘debating’ Joe Biden?
Unfortunately, Jane, I don’t think it will ever happen. The “debates” are in no way debates. They are a question and answer period and I’m fairly sure that Ms. Sarah will get the questions before hand.
I would so love to see it be a real debate. As a question and then let the two candidates duke it out. That’s what debate is all about.

Rick Davis, McCain’s campaign manager, says this election shouldn’t be about the issues, it should be about the personalities. So, they’ve got nothing to run on either way.
September 5th, 2008 at 11:06 pm“I would so love to see it be a real debate.”
Bilbo, I agree. What passes for a debate these days is completely useless to the voters, since there’s almost never any follow-up or reminders of the actual facts.

Of course. They have already fallen in line. The “press” that was arrested was not the corporate owned right wing press. It was the sole representative of the true press that is left to us.
What I am hoping is that the corporate controlled MSM will get pissed enough at McBush and Company that they will finally actually do their job. I’m not holding my breath, but I am hoping.
On the other hand, we have the rogue press like the National Enquirer who are in Alaska ferreting out the truth.
September 5th, 2008 at 11:10 pmJane,
September 5th, 2008 at 11:11 pmThe VP debate is October 2nd.
I have to agree with Bilbo though. I highly doubt it’s going to be a fair debate, I bet Sarah will have every answer prepared to every question so Biden won’t embarrass her…The MSM wouldn’t want that.
#Jane E. Schneider Says:
Rick Davis, McCain’s campaign manager, says this election shouldn’t be about the issues, it should be about the personalities. So, they’ve got nothing to run on either way.
And this needs to be a hard-hitting widely distributed Democratic ad. Obama wants this election to be about issues. McCain wants it to be about personalities. What do you want?

But does anyone think Sarah Palin is, by the public’s standards, “qualified” to be president? A lot of people far more qualified than her were already rejected by the public.
September 5th, 2008 at 9:57 pm
I’ll take a stab.
It depends on who you ask. If it’s a female Republican, like the one I found on a local message board tonight (”Jane”), it seems the only qualifications that she sees as necessary include:
- Palin has a lot of courage in the male-dominated world of politics.
- Palin is someone that Jane can relate to.
- Jane shares Palin’s values.
Jane also made the unbelievably hypocritical comment that she has a lot of unanswered questions regarding Obama, and thus she cannot support him. I just had to point out to Jane the obvious fact that Palin has been in the public spotlight for all of 7 days yet she doesn’t bother asking any questions of this unknown entity.
One claim made by another contributor is that Palin was more experienced than Obama. Asking if this was due to her “executive” experience as governor/mayor (honestly the only type of experience I could think she would have), I pointed out that if this was the case, then she was also more experienced than McCain. Continuing with this logic, I said that this also means since neither McCain nor Obama have any executive experience, then McCain is no more qualified for the presidency than Obama.
For good measure, since they are very important qualifications in the eyes of the Repubs, I asked my fellow contributors to define the military and foreign policy experience that both Reagan and Bush Jr. acquired prior to being elected, and how that experience helped them in their decisions made as President.
September 5th, 2008 at 11:15 pmMarie Says:

That’s not necessarily true. She, at one time, had a 90% approval rating. But after all the scandals she has become involved in, her rating fell recently to something like 62% and was still on the way down.
Alaska has been right leaning state, but it may lose a senate seat (Ted Stevens) and it’s only congressional seat (Don Young) in this election. Since Alaska only has one representative in Congress, that means that the Republicans could lose 2/3 of their representatives in Congress. Right now Young and Stevens are trailing their Democratic opponents. What does that say about the conservative capital of Alaska?

Notice the obsession with Soros. This numbskull also no doubt vilifies Al Gore for pointing out that we are disrupting the climate. This is a common psychological feature among right wing authoritarians: they need to personalize their misguided anger against a bogeyman. The Republicans have been masterful at manipulating this psychological weakness of their followers.

September 6th, 2008 at 1:09 amAll this attention towards Palin must be a dream come true for McCain. I’d say odds are that this is exactly what they were expecting.
After all, none of his supporters interviewed in the media (2 Republican governors and Romney, to name a few) have been able to define a single difference between McCain’s and Bush’s policies. As well, in what would have been the perfect opportunity, McCain himself listed not one difference in his acceptance speech.
Palin’s selection takes some of the heat off the McCain/Bush comparisions.

September 6th, 2008 at 1:24 amAre there really people in this country stupid enough to believe that the media is actually controlled by liberals? Are they so incurious that they cannot understand why anyone would want to learn the truth, instead of just believeing what they’re told? Do they not understand that true journalism requires that one seek out the truth, no matter how painful, rather than simply accept what the government tells them?
For more than four decades, conservatives have been building, what could be called, an “anti-journalism” establishment. They have created “Think Tanks” to give a false air of credibility and academish-like quality to their opinion on how things ought to be done. Then they quote these think tanks as “proof” that their views are correct, never pointing out to their readers and viewers, that the think tanks are funded by the same people who present those views through the media. In other words, they reference themselves to prove themselves correct. And, of course, most people grew up with the false idea that you can’t say something on televeision if it isn’t true (getting confused with truth-in-advertising laws), so they assume that what they’ve heard is true. And the conservatives weren’t about to correct their false notions, not when they could take advantage of it. From there, taking control of other things behind the scenes was easy.
And that’s how you end up with a misanthrope like George W. Bush technically serving as President of the United States of America.
It’s not because of liberal journalists in the media, it’s because of conservative ownership of the media.
September 6th, 2008 at 1:46 amThis is a point.
repugs are out-of-touch with real people. remember when they invited Colbert to speak at one of their dinners. they didn’t his jokes until he appeared at the dinner.

What liberal media? What exactly have they done to Palin?
If your complaint is that they have dared to mildly challenge the McCain campaign narrative as Palin the “energy and foreign policy expert”, then you only have the Republican camp to blame for that: Anyone with half a brain -almost anyone but (evidently) you- understands how ridiculous this story is.
The “liberal” media are Soros’ drones? Wow… try not to wear your tin foil hat too tight. Accuracy in Media are little more than crackpot conspiracy theorists. Reading their site was good for a chuckle, I will give you that…
September 6th, 2008 at 4:09 amGregor, you are right about AIM. Despite what they call themselves, they are hardly accurate about the media.

Faiz is on the Washington Journal on C-Span this morning, along with AIM to discuss “Media coverage of the Conventions”.
Hey TP….Why no advance Notice?
September 6th, 2008 at 7:56 amUPdate on Faiz v. Cliff Kincaid on c-span this morning.
In MY opinion..
Faiz came across as well spoken, intelligent, and well informed about the Media and the Sara Palin controversy.
His main point was that the questions about this little known Governor are LEGITIMATE and NECESSARY for voters to cast an INFORMED VOTE. He also maintained that the Republicans are resorting to a well worn tactic ,when they are losing on the Issues….namely BASH the ELITE MEDIA.
Mr. Kincaid was a real peace of work. In less than 30 minutes he managed to:
Accuse Obama of Communist ties.
Blame the Entire Blogosphere for the postings of a few diarists (re. the Palin Pregnancies)
Claim that Obama, (who received millions of primary votes and Months of press scrutiny) was not properly Vetted.
Bring up Biden’s Plagarism of 20 years ago ( which the Senator paid for by losing his presidential bid)
Call for Defunding of PBS and NPR
Claim that the Press was going after Gov. Palin’s personel life and family, and that she should therefore not have to appear in any press conferences.
I think Faiz is on the right track. American voters need to hear from Gov. Palin about legitimate issues, and not just in Speeches , written by Republican strategists, and given before Partisan audiences.
September 6th, 2008 at 8:58 amThanks, Badger. The GOP hacks are both angry and frustrated because like their 8 years of defending the Bush and the failed neocon experiment; they are again forced to appear on TV to defend more numerous and obvious Republican failures–this time in the name of McCain and Palin.

The more I think about it the more convinced I become that this is all by design. Shortly after taking office McBush will resign due to health reasons, making Palin President. Then the Republicans will put in another Dick Cheney as VP (or god forbid put Cheney back in) and we will have another stealth presidency. The Republicans can’t possibly believe that Sarah Palin is qualified to be President any more than George Bush was.

They are STUPID and only ignorant hivemind morons take them seriously but you did your duty as a loyal member of the Limborg and repeated what you have been TOLD to believe. You are such a pathetic brainwashed idiot its just sad. The media isnt liberal. Anyone paying attention knows this. The media BEAT the drums of war liberals were against. They IGNORED the Downing Street memo as long as they could, they never pointed out Bushs undeniable lies. They arent liberal. Never have been. I am a liberal they arent pushing MY policy agenda. You guys are so stupid you think things become true because you repeat them endlessly like demented Myna birds.
