Earlier today, the McCain campaign released an ad pushing the debunked claim that Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin “stopped the Bridge to Nowhere.” The Washington Post’s Howard Kurtz called the ad’s bridge claim a “whopper,” noting that “she endorsed the remote project while running for governor in 2006.”
But Fox News political reporter Carl Cameron defended the ad’s claim. Though Cameron notes that Palin spoke “very favorably” of the project before becoming governor, he declared that “Palin can point to a number of things she did and said that made it clear that in the end she was against it.” “You can’t dispute that,” said Cameron:
CAMERON: The Obama campaign is accusing the McCainiacs of lying about this “bridge to nowhere” issue. But Sarah Palin can point to a number of things she did and said that made it clear that in the end she was against it. You can’t dispute that, she ultimately told legislators in Alaska, it’s not coming. But there was a time before she was governor, as a candidate, where she spoke favorably about it.
Cameron went on to claim that it’s “inaccurate” to say Palin “asked for earmark money and pork” because “it’s done by members of Congress.” Watch it:
As ThinkProgress has noted, the reality is that Palin supported the bridge before reluctantly ending the project when it was “clear” that Congress had “little interest in spending any more money” on the bridge. As the AP notes in a fact check, Palin made the decision only “after federal dollars for the project were pulled back and diverted to other uses in Alaska.”
As for Cameron’s claim that it is “inaccurate” to say Palin “asked for earmark money,” the AP notes that “as mayor of Wasilla, Palin hired a lobbyist and traveled to Washington annually to support earmarks for the town totaling $27 million.” This past February, “Palin’s office sent Sen. [Ted] Stevens a 70-page memo outlining almost $200 million worth of new funding requests for the state.”
Check out our new Lies to Nowhere document.
Transcript:
CAMERON: Oh, it’s not an easy one to straighten out at all, John. There’s a lot of sort of nuance involved in how this plays out. Back when Sarah Palin was the Mayor of Wasilla in Alaska and the bridge was beginning to be the buzz of congressional spending, she spoke very favorably about it. When she was a candidate for governor, she said that there needed to be a link between Ketchikan, the city in Alaska, and a tiny little island, Gravina Island, which had about 50 residents and an airport. She said that there needed to be a link. But political winds began to turn, this $400 million congressional project, dubbed “The Bridge to Nowhere,” became unpopular. The political rhetoric, the din rose, and as it did, it became clear that the federal government wasn’t going to send all of the money for it. And with that change so too did change Sarah Palin’s rhetoric and ultimately, as a candidate for governor, she began to say that she didn’t want Alaska bad mouthed, but it was clear that the federal government wasn’t going to come through with the money, so it was time to look elsewhere. She did continue to say that there should be some sort of an access and that is why the Democrats have called this ad a lie. They’ve used the L word, John, 58 days before elections and the Obama campaign is accusing the McCainiacs of lying about this Bridge to Nowhere issue. But Sarah Palin can point to a number of things she did and said that made it clear that in the end she was against it. You can’t dispute that, she ultimately told legislators in Alaska, it’s not coming. But there was a time before she was governor, as a candidate, where she spoke favorably about it.
Now, she didn’t ask for the bridge, nor did she ask for the money. It’s very important to understand in earmark discussions, John, governors and state officials don’t ask for federal money. That’s done by senators and congressmen. So, when people say Sarah Palin asked for earmark money and pork, it’s just inaccurate, it’s done by members of Congress.
YES! USE THE WORD “LIES”! KEEEP USING IT.
it forces these people to respond and get defensive, drawing attention to the matter.
no more using the terms “gaffe” “misled” “mispoken” or even “incorrect”
the correct term is LIE. use the word over and over again. glad to see obama FINALLY start doing this… these are not the type of people you can speak politely to. they arent playing by any rules so why should we treat this like a contest between two gentlemen?
September 8th, 2008 at 8:13 pmTypical of Fox just tell outright lies. What is really disgusting is the rightwing doesnt even go to the trouble to make up believable lies anymore. They know they arent going to convince those of us paying attention that the sky isnt blue and they know their brainwashed hivemind base will believe anything they tell them no matter how ludicrous it is so they just spew out whatever floats to the top of their heads
September 8th, 2008 at 8:13 pmIf John Kerry did this, Fox would have their teeth down to the bone. Here, they’re putting lipstick on the pig…
September 8th, 2008 at 8:16 pmThey really do ascribe to the theory if they tell a lie enough times people will start believing it’s the truth. All we can do is to keep exposing those lies.
The Obama campaign needs to IMMEDIATELY come out with an ad showing Sarah Palin supporting the bridge to nowhere and point out that she kept the money given for the access road and is building the access road even though it dead ends where the bridge was supposed to go.
WHAT IN THE HELL IS WRONG WITH OBAMA? Why isn’t he taking off the gloves with his advertisements? When is he going to introduce the voters to the real John McSame and Sara Barracuda?
September 8th, 2008 at 8:19 pmA 70 page memo of new funding requests is not a memo; it’s a thome and a abomination. So much for ahem, fiscal responsibility.
September 8th, 2008 at 8:20 pmAt least the Obama campaign isn’t rolling over dead, and most of the real national and international media aren’t either. Fox can tell its viewer anything and they’ll gobble it up like a dog gobbles cat poop. New, punchy ad from Obama!
(Assuming TP’s software allows this.)

September 8th, 2008 at 8:29 pmUntil John McCain selected her as his running mate, it never occurred to anyone to deny that Palin stopped the bridge. That’s certainly what the Anchorage Daily News reported on February 8, 2008:
Let’s count how many things Gov. Sarah Palin’s predecessor did that she’s undone.
It’s quite a list.
The state-owned jet: Sold.
The proposed Gravina Island “bridge to nowhere” and a pioneer road to Juneau: Won’t be funded.
And again on March 12, 2008:
Alaska Sen. Ted Stevens is aggravated about what he sees as Gov. Sarah Palin’s antagonism toward the earmarks he uses to steer federal money to the state. … A common target for earmark snipers is the so-called “bridge to nowhere” plugged by Alaska Rep. Don Young into the five-year transportation bill in 2005. Congress stripped the earmarks directing the spending but let the state keep the money to use on the bridge if it wanted.
Palin ruffled feathers when she announced – without giving the delegation advance notice – that the state was killing the Ketchikan bridge to Gravina Island, site of the airport and a few dozen residents.
I don’t know how it could be any clearer: as the McCain ad says, Palin killed the bridge. Indeed, the Alaska Democrats themselves say, on a web site attacking Senator Ted Stevens:
Gov. Palin recently cancelled the Gravina Island Bridge near Ketchikan that would have connected the Alaska mainland with Gravina Island (population: 50).
September 8th, 2008 at 8:45 pmIt is frankly ridiculous to deny that Palin killed the bridge, as the ad says. If the Democrats want to attack some other aspect of her record, fine. If they want to say that she (like all state officials) was generally happy to accept federal money when it was offered, fine. But to say that the simple statement that she killed the bridge is a “lie” is false and disingenuous
She didnt kill the bridge, Copano, congress did.
September 8th, 2008 at 8:48 pmNow that Alaska is front and center in the news again, it is a good time to catch up on a favorite story, The Bridge to Nowhere, using the Washington Post US Congress Votes Database.
Though Gov. Palin originally supported the earmark spending on the Ketchikan bridge (“to nowhere), she eventually killed the project, chosing to spend Federal money on other infrasturcture programs.
However, Sen. Biden and Sen. Obama voted for funding the Bridge, even when given a second chance by Sen. Tom Coburn, who proposed shifting earmark funds to Katrina relief.

Gravina Island Bridge
Ted Earmarked Funds for Bridge that Goes Nowhere
Stevens championed proposed bridge near Ketchikan that became national symbol of wasteful spending
Sen. Murkowski’s family would benefit personally from the bridge
State of Alaska killed bridge
The proposed Gravina Island Bridge, also known as the “Bridge to Nowhere,” became a national symbol of wasteful congressional spending and driver of earmark reform. On Sept. 21, 2007, the State of Alaska officially abandoned the controversial project.
The Gravina Island Bridge initially received $223 million in 2005 via earmarks by Alaska Senators Ted Stevens and Lisa Murkowski. The bridge would have connected Ketchikan, Alaska with its local airport on nearby Gravina Island (population 50). Congress stripped the earmark after a national uproar about it but appropriated the money anyway for unspecified transportation uses. Former Gov. Frank Murkowski’s administration set aside about $113 million of the appropriation for the Ketchikan bridge. However, Gov. Sarah Palin said the $398 million bridge was $329 million short of full funding, and only $36 million in federal funds were set aside for it. She said it was clear Congress had little interest in spending any more money for it and that the state had higher priorities.

Looks like the state democrats in Alaska knew what happened, they even moved the page but put it back after the google chache came back to bite them. Obama is the liar here.
September 8th, 2008 at 8:52 pmEvery day we are finding out more and more about Sarah Palin. She is corrupt, unethical, morally bankrupt, religiously twisted and a complete LIAR!!!
September 8th, 2008 at 8:53 pmOn Palin from Americablog
Palin was mayor of Wasilla, Alaska from 1996 to 2002. And according to an Alaskan news article in the local Wasilla paper in the year 2000, the City of Wasilla, under Mayor Palin, charged rape victims for their own forensic tests. Most Alaskan municipalities picked up the tab themselves, but not Wasilla, the article notes. You see, the city of Wasilla, the article notes, didn’t want to “burden” taxpayers with having to support victims of rape. Yes, they were more interested in lowering taxes. It would have cost the city between $5,000 and $14,000 a year to pay for the rape victims’ police medical exams. And if the City of Wasillay, circa the year 2000, wants to go there in terms of balancing rape vs, burdening taxpayers, you should know that each and every Alaskan gets a check from the state government each year, it contains their portion of that year’s oil revenues. The latest check, I read, was for over $2,000.
September 8th, 2008 at 8:53 pmThe democrats in Alaska say it was the state, are they liars or wrong.
September 8th, 2008 at 8:54 pmCongress stripped the earmark after a national uproar about it but appropriated the money anyway for unspecified transportation uses -Copano.
So much for she killed the bridge, eh?
September 8th, 2008 at 8:54 pm>Alaska Sen. Ted Stevens is aggravated about
> what he sees as Gov. Sarah Palin’s
> antagonism toward the earmarks he uses
2 questions:
was this before or after Palin headed the 527 named after him?
if Stevens was so agravated at her, why was he one of the first people to endorse her after she was crowned MCcain’s VP?
September 8th, 2008 at 8:55 pm> the City of Wasilla, under Mayor Palin,
> charged rape victims for their own forensic tests.
oh, good one! PAY ATTENTION OBAMA CAMPAIGN!
this needs to be made into a commerical!
I think Palin’s attitude was “if they didnt have a gun, or a man, or a man with a gun, or a gun and a man with a gun to protect them, they deserve what they got”

Piffle.
Last year, Palin announced she was stopping state work on the controversial project, earning her admirers from earmark critics and budget hawks from around the nation. The move also thrust her into the spotlight as a reform-minded newcomer.
The state, however, never gave back any of the money that was originally earmarked for the Gravina Island bridge, said Weinstein and Elerding.
In fact, the Palin administration has spent “tens of millions of dollars” in federal funds to start building a road on Gravina Island that is supposed to link up to the yet-to-be-built bridge, Weinstein said.
Palin “stopped work” on the bridge because the federal government refused to fund it.

I think it is disengenuous to talk about the bridge as linking Ketchikan with Gravina Island – POPULATION 50. It is linking Ketchikan with the AIRPORT (only accessible by Ferry).
In a better world, we’d be discussing the project in terms of its economic merit relative to the other infrastructure needs of the nation, not as some imperfect ’symbol’ of whether someone is ‘taking on’ Washington.
Alaska, with its powerful Senators and Representative, was able to secure funding for more projects than other, more populous states whose representation in Washington had less political influenence. When Palin says, “thanks but no thanks”, she SEEMS to be saying that she REFUSED money from Washington sent for an infrustructure project. However, SHE TOOK THE MONEY and killed the project. She wasn’t protecting US taxpayers from wasteful spending. She wasn’t looking out for the economic development of Alaska. She was merely exercising arbitrary power.
Now, she is selling a lie as a way to get more power.
We deserve better. We deserve the truth.

What a role model this woman is.

She ran on support for it, right? She went against the constituents, utimately, that got her elected. Is that being disputed? -Bob
No, she didnt go against the constituents. She changed her mind, he said, when “she saw that Alaska was being perceived as taking from the country and not giving …” -Bill Mcallister Palin communications director. She didnt go against her constituents because she basically pinned no longer funding it on because of congress. IE she was not to blame for the lack of funding AFTER she was elected. Its politics and she got caught waffling and spinning.

September 8th, 2008 at 9:39 pmpete you are forgetting the fantasy “energy independent” phrase which is so bandied about these days. I love that one. The fattest pigs at the trough are somehow incapable of being expected to just eat a little less but will somehow just fend for themselves. Sure….
September 8th, 2008 at 9:40 pmThe righties are claiming that Biden and Obama voted for the Bridge to Nowhere. I don’t know if that’s true or not because I couldn’t find a reputable news source that said so. But, be that as it may. The bridge was undoubtedly part of a larger spending bill and that may have been why they “voted for it”, if they did. But that is not the point. They are not claiming that they killed something that was already dead or that they didn’t support something they did. In other words, they didn’t lie.
Also, I don’t find it unusual that McBush didn’t vote for the bill because he has missed so many votes, what difference does it make? I doubt that he didn’t vote because he didn’t support the Bridge. If that was the case he would have showed up and voted no.
September 8th, 2008 at 9:43 pmWow! The McTrolls from McSpin’s McSite are falling in quality. Haven’t you been paying attention, troll?
No one gives a rip about her kids, grand kids, nieces, nephews and assorted kin. It’s her constant lying and profound ignorance, compounded by a proudly avowed Belief in myth over method, that makes her completely unqualified for elected office. She’s dangerously dogmatic and ignorant and that’s before her radical politics are even considered. Then there’s the fact that she has yet to make a statement, to my knowledge, which didn’t contain obvious lies.
“My opponents want to do nothing” about energy. That’s an exact quote. It’s a blatant lie. It, alone, disqualifies her in my estimation. There are hundreds of similar asinine statements in her public speeches.
September 8th, 2008 at 9:43 pmIt might be sort of fun to image a Palin/Biden debate moderated by James Stockdale and Dan Quayle.

No YOU are either a liar or a fool. Do you think repeating something over and over makes it TRUE? Repitition is NOT a magica formula that makes nonsense into reality. Did she stop the bridge? YES, but the issue here is the earmarks and she TOOK and KEPT the money. She was FOR the bridge to GET THE MONEY and what she says is that she told Congress no thanks but she DID NOT DO SO she said THANKS for the money that I CAMPAIGNED on for the bridge and I will use THE EARMARK for something else it is a FLAT OUT LIE Palin told to say she told Congress no thanks for the Bridge earmark. Not even a good try.
September 8th, 2008 at 10:03 pmThat’s what makes it funny pete. It sort of writes itself. Maybe that old dude from Candid Camera could come out just before Biden’s brain breaks…

September 8th, 2008 at 10:30 pmPalin sneers every time she talks about Obama. She even sneers when she says the word senator. She’s still on her best behavior, but she is getting more evil every time she has to repeat that speech. Between that sneer and that evil smile she makes me want to scream.

September 8th, 2008 at 11:09 pmI wonder too what the other senators think of her dismissing sneer every time she says it.
September 8th, 2008 at 11:10 pmCAMERON: The Obama campaign is accusing the McCainiacs of lying about this “bridge to nowhere” issue. But Sarah Palin can point to a number of things she did and said that made it clear that in the end she was against it. You can’t dispute that, she ultimately told legislators in Alaska, it’s not coming. But there was a time before she was governor, as a candidate, where she spoke favorably about it.
Cameron is being dishonest (call it what you will, but there are degrees of lying). Notice the qualification ..in the end she was against it…. He is admitting that there was a time when she wasn’t against it. And we know this because she campaigned on getting it done, thanks to her Congressional Delegation. But then he completely downplays the evidence of hypocrisy (a word they hate but a practice they love) when he says, “But there was a time before she was governor, as a candidate, where she spoke favorably about it.” She didn’t merely “speak favorably about it,” she wanted it!
And they managed to get Keith Olbermann kicked out of the Politics Anchor Chair because he wasn’t unbiased enough? Frankly, I thought he was just doing what any good citizen should do during an election campaign, speak truth to would-be power.
September 8th, 2008 at 11:10 pmWhy be for it if you’re going to get the money any way and then can spend it how ever you want. Easier to spread it out to your friends that way.
September 8th, 2008 at 11:13 pmThe money did not go back. It went to gravel roads. Must have been mighty expensive gravel. Wolf Blitzer today, by not being specific, gave the impression that the money went back to the fed government. He said she was for it before opinion was so strongly against it.
How come Track was born only 7 1/2 months after she married?
September 8th, 2008 at 11:38 pmHow come she made four college changes before getting a BA? What were her grades like? They can’t find a teacher who knew her or a club or newspaper she was with as a journalism major.
Hmmm. If I understand it correctly?
The original funding was in the form of an earmark by good ol’ Ted Stevens. Then the original earmark was stripped in 05. Before Obama or Palin were even running for their current offices.
The funding was reinstated in Nov. 06, I haven’t discovered whether it was voted on or another earmark. This was shortly after Obama and Palin were elected but, before they assumed their current offices. At this point Palin supported the project and I’ve found no mention of Obama stating an opinion.
The whole project was started and stopped by both the Feds and Alaskan officials. Congress finally killed federal funding in 07 and again, I’ve found no mention of Obama’s position. Also, later in 07, Ms. Palin signed the bill killing state funding.
But, and this is key, she lobbied hard for the project up until the second she realized the federal funding would never come forth and it was widely regarded as an outrageous “pork project” since before she even dreamed of running for governor.
Ms. Palin has explicitly stated that she “killed the bridge to nowhere”. That’s a lie.
I really think the Obama campaign should go right down the list on both these characters. If they can manage to frame the arguments, and associate McSpin/Palin’s faces with a banner that says “LIAR”? No amount of voter fraud will be able to stem the landslide.

September 8th, 2008 at 11:45 pmWhat disturbs me most about this b!tch is the way she goes after Obama’s saint like quality… the fact he went out on the streets to help the poor instead of doing what most do – seek gainful employment. She is mocking and trying to humiliate Obama’s Christian behavior and at the same time claiming to be the real Christian.
And some of the people are buying it.
How stupid and low can the human race get?

Obama’s a muslim
September 8th, 2008 at 10:01 pm
Obama has said many times he is not a Muslim.
I for one believe most know this, including you, but continue to put it out there for what ever reason.
This is a desperate idiotic lie… and if he was Muslim so what? This is also hurtful to the Muslim population… shame on you.
So disgusted and sick to death of all this nasty behavior.
September 9th, 2008 at 12:03 amI believe the Antichrist is supposed to occupy Babylon for 100 years. That fits McCain, not Obama.

I’ll say it again: That list is highly suspect, since the Harry Potter books came out AFTER Palin was no longer Mayor of Wasilla.
Just sayin’…
September 9th, 2008 at 12:06 amOval aka James,
September 9th, 2008 at 12:07 amCNN said that list was bogus. They say quite a few were not even written in 1996 or whenever.
Why would Cujo be censored, anyway?

September 9th, 2008 at 1:03 amThis is a beauty MATE…
This comes from DEMOCRACYNOW:
Palin: Iraq War is a “Task” from God
In campaign news, a video has emerged of Republican vice-presidential nominee Sarah Palin telling ministry students at her former church that the US invasion of Iraq is a task from God.
Sarah Palin: “Pray for our military men and women who are striving to do what is right. Also, for this country, that our leaders, our national leaders, are sending them out on a task that is from God. That’s what we have to make sure that we’re praying for, that there is a plan and that that plan is God’s plan. So bless them with your prayers, your prayers of protection over our soldiers.”
During the same address, Palin said the construction of a new oil pipeline in Alaska is God’s will.
Sarah Palin: “I can do my part in doing things like working really, really hard to get a natural gas pipeline, about a $30 billion project that’s going to create a lot of jobs for Alaskans, and we’ll have a lot of energy flowing through here. And pray about that also. I think God’s will has to be done in unifying people and companies to get that gas line built, so pray for that.”
The video of her speech was originally posted on the Wasilla Assembly of God’s website
September 9th, 2008 at 1:28 amRight.
Just like you can’t dispute that those WMD were found in Iraq….
September 9th, 2008 at 1:28 amThat’s right, Keith, but you gotta watch out for those pigeons plotting in secrecy and the reactionary zebras. But the hamsters do have fun!
September 9th, 2008 at 1:35 am“I think God’s will has to be done in unifying people and companies to get that gas line built, so pray for that.”
~Sara Palin
This just in from Captain Obvious: If all it takes to get things done is a little prayer, why would you want to run for VP, campaigning as a competent, experienced candidate?
I mean, who needs experience and competency when you have Gawd on your side? Why, you could just stay home and pray all bloody day long, for that matter.
But the 23%ers fall for this nonsense over, and over, and over…
September 9th, 2008 at 1:44 amThat list of books that were banned by Sara Palin -or that she wanted to ban- is bogus, and has been debunked already.
Check out this entry at Snopes.com
Zooey is right: the list is suspect because it contains titles that were not even published at the time Palin supposedly asked for their ban from Wasilla’s public library.
September 9th, 2008 at 2:35 amThis women lies like a cheap rug. You guys need to tell you wives, girlfriends, sisters and mothers and co workers the truth about her. This whole thing in the words of Bill Clinton is “the biggest ferrytale” I’ve ever heard. They tell lie after lie about the positions and the media which knows better does nothing to correct the record. Guys this election is too important to let them win it based on LIES. We have to stand up on U Tube and anywhere else and tell the truth about this rightwing idiot.
September 9th, 2008 at 7:56 amPalin Also Supported The “Road To Nowhere” (And May Still)
September 9th, 2008 at 9:04 amYeah, and it also seems that she is against the state of Alaska paying for rape victims forensic tests…americablog.com has the info..Everyday brings a new revolation. None of them good!! Pass it on!
September 9th, 2008 at 9:37 amGregor Samsa….maybe so. But just the fact that she inquired about this at all…on at least 3 occasions, is frightening.
