McCain campaign belittles climate crisis: Running mates won’t ‘agree on every single issue.’»

Appearing on MSNBC today, Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) spokeswoman Jill Hazelbaker cited McCain’s position on “climate change” as evidence that he had broken with his party. Andrea Mitchell then questioned Hazelbaker, “How do Sarah Palin and Sen. McCain agree on climate change?” Hazelbaker touted Palin’s efforts to build a “forty-billion-dollar natural gas pipeline.” Mitchell persisted, asking, “But doesn’t she have a completely different position on climate change and its origins than John McCain?” Hazelbaker retorted:

Andrea, Andrea. You don’t expect the running mates to agree on every single issue.

Watch it:

But as McCain himself said while campaigning in New Hampshire last year, climate change is not an area where there should be a disagreement because the “time is past when we argue about whether climate change is real or not.”

Transcript:

HAZELBAKER: You go down the list, whether it’s climate change, whether it’s campaign finance reform, whether it’s, you know, earmarks and ending the wasteful and pork barrel spending, there’s just no comparison.

MITCHELL: How do Sarah Palin and John McCain agree on climate change?

HAZELBAKER: Well, Sarah Palin, I’m glad you asked, the governor of Alaska, she knows firsthand how we reduce our dependence on foreign sources of oil. You know, this is the candidate, in Sarah Palin, who has worked to build a $40 billion oil and gas pipeline.

MITCHELL: But doesn’t she have a completely different position on climate change and its origins than John McCain?

HAZELBAKER: Andrea, Andrea, you don’t expect the running mates to agree on every single issue.

McPutz breaking with his party. That’ll be the day. One more flip-flop from the king of flip-floppers.

  2. RUCerious Says:

Ohfer X sakes, that was LAST year! In New Hampshire!
He’s forgotten about that since, well, last year!

  3. stateofthedivision Says:

Between McCon and Pale-In what have they not belittled? Grumpy kissed the Sleeping Alaskan Beauty Queen. She’s still in 1968, when Fannie Mae last received tax payer money.

If we move ahead as fast as possible with nuclear, wind, solar, etc. We will still need that pipeline.

No we don’t. We produce 3% of the worlds oil and consume +/- 20% of the worlds oil. Those paths will never balance and match. We could drill every hole in the USA and still NEVER make a dent in our capacity. We will ALWAYS rely on others to feed our addiction. Now is the time to get busy with the 21st century version of energy independance. We can do it - if we forget the folly of drilling our way to self-sufficiency.

  7. Bob Says:

How do Sarah Palin and John McCain agree on climate change?

If you only read her answer, don’t you think the question is how to reduce our dependance on foriegn oil? How does building a pipeline address the issue of climate change? I realize that they do this all the time, but she never answered the question, did she?

If we move ahead as fast as possible with nuclear, wind, solar, etc. We will still need that pipeline.

Even if we move ahead as fast as we can with everything except fossil fuels, drilling will not help, it is only a distraction.

Why haven’t the energy companies moved before now? Because raygun and every republican since him have said it was ridiculous and now…..here we are, are ya happy now?

  9. GeeDubs Says:

Let’s be clear, shall we? The only thing that is happening on the campaign trail now is pushing the Country First bullshit and how awesomely mavericky the both of them are. They don’t care about any of the issues - hell McGrumpy’s campaign manager said this - so what’s a little difference about whether the planet will be destroyed by our actions (or not…according to Sarah.) They probably have A LOT of policy differences, but McDumpy can’t say so because he can’t remember anymore what he believes in.

  10. GeeDubs Says:

And furthermore, if it’s a question of meshing those policy differences, well the Republican Spin Machine will just wash any of those dirty old differences away and put it in a neat package called ‘Change.’ Now THAT’s change we can believe in!!!

There just daily tracking polls, but the idea that Palin is a liability (at least in the short run) I think can be dismissed.

Obama enjoyed 50% to 42% before Palin’s speech and in less than a week, it’s turned 49% to 44% McCain.

What’s that, a 13 point shift? Palin’s got a long 2 months ahead of her, but she was not the laughable pick that many here or in the media predicted.

The Pentagon says Climate Change is the greatest threat we will face in the future. Wars over scarcity of food, water, and livable land. Floods, droughts, fires, hurricanes, and tens of millions of refugees.

  13. Bob Says:

Parin implies that without federal gov’t restrictions, drilling in Alaska would totally alleviate our dependence on foreign oil. She also supports Alaska succession from the Union (outlawed about 150 yrs ago). Does she realize that would make Alaskan oil ‘foreign’? I doubt it. This may be neither here nor there, but I think it is evident of how ‘messed up’ her ‘logic’ can be.

  14. Keith Says:

backup, according to your link, it is a six-point bounce. Why do you take an unempirical poll of 1,000 as sacred and totally dismiss a very empirical exit poll of 13,000 as totally ridiculous?

  15. christopher wiwi Says:

Know matter how you look at it Mcwars and Caribou Barbie are still re-pukes and will lie, cheat and steal the W.H. if they can get away with it.All Palin does is bring more lies and more contradictions to Mcwars Reform Party and sooner than later people will see this. She has only energized the re-puke base and not enough of any other base to make a difference to me.She is all wrong for this country with her anti/prochoice platform, who theocratic views and her lack of sound judgement on climate change and energy alternatives and not to mention foreign policy. Is she pro union?Pro EFCA?Will god tell her to push the button in the End of Times Armageddon?

US FCC Relieves Big Phone Cos Of Costly Data Requirements

In Saturday’s order, the FCC specifically relieved Verizon and Qwest from requirements that they provide data on how they allocate certain costs.

De-regulation on the march……more bad news for Americans. Where are our patriots?

  17. Xisithrus Says:

Well, backup, I keep seeing the gallup poll being touted…its only one of many polls and I notice that its +-2%

    Gallup

    National
    McCain 49, Obama 44

  18. Keith Says:

Since we have 3-4% of the world’s energy and use 25%, how can drilling make us energy independent?

  19. Xisithrus Says:

    As for electoral votes
    Obama 301 McCain 224 Ties 13

  20. Bob Says:

What happens to that $40 bil. pipeline when it shifts due to permafrost melting from global warming?

It becomes a worthless pipeline that we pay $40 billion for.

  21. RUCerious Says:

No, Bob, we go and pay 400 billion to put pilings underneath it. Sheesh!

  22. Fred Says:

    backup Says:
she was not the laughable pick that many here or in the media predicted.

No one except you has used laughable. We think she is perfect since she is so unqualified and was only picked for political reasons, not for the good of the country.

    As for your fake polls:
Try this for a little taste of reality

  23. nofltwlt Says:

Yes, by definition everyone in the republican party must agree on everything. That’s just the way it is. It’s easier this way, only one person must have an idea and everyone else cheer it on - no matter the merit.

  24. Xisithrus Says:

Since we have 3-4% of the world’s energy and use 25%, how can drilling make us energy independent? -Keith

Drilling in Iraq is the only possible way. What the drill drill drill folks are talking about cant work. Why 96%% of the oil production in the Gulf was shut down because of Gustav. Production cant be just turned on and off and it will take weeks to move rigs back into place and slowly bring the well back into full production.

Heres an interview with an oil rig operator, Curtis Burton, even he says we must use alternative energy and he explains how things in the gulf works pretty well. Its in mp3 format so one can listen while surfing the net

= if they are caught lying then we can say that “they don’t have to agree.”

  26. misshusseinmolly Says:

Whether McCain and Palin agree on any given issue is moot — no matter what their original positions were, or even what they are now, they will both morph their positions to match the official “party line”. And then the McCain campaign will deny that they ever held any other position.

  27. Xisithrus Says:

    backup Says:
she was not the laughable pick that many here or in the media predicted.

Recall that George Bush had about as much experience as Palin, It was Cheney that had the experience and knew how the things worked, now they wont even mention their names. Government grew under Bush and deficits hit record levels. Im not laughing at all because Palin and McCain would be more of the same.

  28. DidHeJustSayThat Says:

Think Progess: you are misleading the public on John McCain’s stance on Climate change.

He has adopted the party platform and therefore denies the science behind it. He’s flipped on virtually every other issue. Why would you think silly little Global Warming is any different?

  29. Bob Says:

Oh yeah, never underestimate the cost of a bonehead gov’t idea.

They could make the pilings out of caribou bones since they like it so much, eh?

  30. Xisithrus Says:

Moose bones are bigger and it would help the mooseburger market.

  34. had enough Says:

As D. Washington in the movie Philadelphia said:
Tell me in terms a 4 year old would understand.

We need a thread of talking points and need to spread this widely…in elementary terms such as:

    * Obama will lower taxes on income lower than 200K, but raise taxes on 200K and above

    * When the repub are in power, jobs always suffer.

  35. had enough Says:

    Keith Says:

Was that you on the cbsnews site about Woodward last night?

No, have not been there yet, but do go to many.

  36. had enough Says:

Keith, I am going to guess that because there is so little progressive media out there but at the same time widely spread through the internet, many of us appear the same.

  37. pete Says:

The problem with many polls is that they tend to poll registered voters in equal numbers from each party. Sometimes they even fudge the numbers further by “correcting” for the density of Reps vs Dems in a given district or poll equal numbers of districts which historically vote for a given party. Unregistered or occasional voters are rarely counted at all.

All of which leads to criticism of polling that’s far older than I am. Namely, that polls are best at judging party loyalty, and little else.

  38. Keith Says:

Okay. the name was “had enough43″

  39. backup Says:

Keith and had enough. Obviously the electoral college is the whole game, but correct me if I’m wrong, all those individual state polls were taken before the RNC convention and the relative bump in the numbers since the Palin selection.

I imagine some of those ‘barely’ or ‘weakly’ contested states could have turned.

  40. had enough Says:

    backup
you can click on each state and see the direction… clearly the direction in many states recently is in Obama’s favor.

Maybe Palin will eventually give a bump… but I see it as that - only a bump. America will rapidly grow tired of her as many do with a one night stand.

  41. pete Says:

Still defending the indefensible b-kup? Still trying to believe that a ticket/platform based on nothing but deceit can still accomplish some good if they somehow manage to market their garbage again?

I am impressed… but it is not me.

  43. dbadass Says:

Is it really too much to ask that we chill out a little bit with our excessive meat consumption, lazy purchasing, and spoiled antics?

  44. pete Says:

For that matter. How can any self-professed moderate, who may have been leaning towards McSpin, still support the “Maverick” after he’s conceded the VP slot and “his” platform to the most radical voices of the GOP?

How can anyone, regardless of political tendencies, support a Presidential candidate who has been all but disavowed by “his” campaign? How can anyone support a candidate who didn’t even play a part in crafting “his” platform?

Combined with whisking away the VP candidate for a 2 week cram session it just looks worse. The whole campaign is effing surreal.

  45. pete Says:

    Good afternoon db.

It’s a bit off topic but, I recently heard a great discussion about energy conservation. One of the interesting tidbits was about the effect of outlawing “drive-thrus”. The estimate is that it would eliminate the equivalent of a city the size of San Diego from our national carbon footprint. And that’s without consideration of all the other nasty stuff idling engines produce.

  46. dbadass Says:

    Hi pete:
OT my ass. I believe the topic was climate related. I am amazed that folks will fall in love with a vp candidate they know nothing about just because they think that the candidate can relate to them but won’t rally around some very simple lifestyle changes in the interest of all if someone would just ask them to. Now as to drive thrus, I’ll bet you’re right but I wouldn’t know. I myself only eat food. I suppose that makes me an elitist…

  47. pete Says:

I much prefer my own kitchen creations too but, I have to have McD’s fries a couple times a year. And there’s a local dive that has onion rings that, one can only surmise, have pleasing psychoactive drugs in the batter.

And I’m not sure too many sane “folks” are all that in love with Ms. Palin. Some of the more rural callers on local radio are not the type to be impressed by trophy rooms and “helicopter hunting”. They can turn ugly when someone without calloused hands tries to behave like “one of them”. They may not be sophisticated but, at least around here, they can smell a phony a mile off. I still see her doing more harm than good to the Jebus/Palin/McSpin ticket.

  48. dbadass Says:

Pete I have never tried it but I have heard some interesting things about the brain of the members of the goatfish group. Seems Hawaiian mystics understood a few things about psychoactive chemicals and diet. I have an openhouse I must git to so I will look for ya later. Thanks for your continued mannerly and informed comments.

  49. pete Says:

Back at ya db. Always a pleasure.

  51. dbadass Says:

Whatever happen to the climate deniers that used to swarm to stuff like this. Some even used to take the time to try to look up shit to make their claims with? I miss them days….

  52. pete Says:

Whatever happen to the climate deniers

My guess is that most of them just went back to school. Sheesh. I just had an image of having some of our favorite trolls in class.

  53. Picklee Says:

I agree with bob. The issue is more how she dodged the question altogether. She asked her about the climate crisis and she replied with oil dependabcy, a completely different issue. And the stupid “liberal” media ate up that talking point. Pay attention people!

  54. sacopenapa Says:

    This is from DEMOCRACYNOW:
Palin: Iraq War is a “Task” from God
In campaign news, a video has emerged of Republican vice-presidential nominee Sarah Palin telling ministry students at her former church that the US invasion of Iraq is a task from God.

Sarah Palin: “Pray for our military men and women who are striving to do what is right. Also, for this country, that our leaders, our national leaders, are sending them out on a task that is from God. That’s what we have to make sure that we’re praying for, that there is a plan and that that plan is God’s plan. So bless them with your prayers, your prayers of protection over our soldiers.”

During the same address, Palin said the construction of a new oil pipeline in Alaska is God’s will.

Sarah Palin: “I can do my part in doing things like working really, really hard to get a natural gas pipeline, about a $30 billion project that’s going to create a lot of jobs for Alaskans, and we’ll have a lot of energy flowing through here. And pray about that also. I think God’s will has to be done in unifying people and companies to get that gas line built, so pray for that.”

The video of her speech was originally posted on the Wasilla Assembly of God’s website
