Palin’s first gaffe: Claims Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac are taxpayer-funded.

Speaking in Colorado this weekend, Gov. Sarah Palin tried to explain the recent federal bailout by claiming that lenders Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac had “gotten too big and too expensive to the taxpayers.” The companies, however, “aren’t taxpayer funded but operate as private companies. The takeover may result in a taxpayer bailout during reorganization,” McClatchy noted. Palin’s satement “is somewhat nonsensical because up until yesterday there was sort of no public funding there,” said Andrew Jakobovics of the Center for American Progress Action Fund. “The ‘too expensive to tax payers,’ I don’t know where that comes from.”

Digg It!

Uh... this is EXACTLY why the GOOPers are trying to shield her from the media... they're all too aware that if she just starts talking openly, she'll make a total fool of herself in no time flat.

Back to quarantine with Sarah. The media shall should stop covering McCain until Palin answers questions.

Well, there goes the key item in Palin's VP agenda - selling Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac on eBay.

Come on, she's from Alaska: she naturally assumes that everything she sees is funded by the federal taxpayers. (feel free to use this joke elsewhere)

  12. DutchHenry Says:

How can she be considered credible ?It's because those who see her as good for the Presidency most likely has no idea what she is saying:The ignorant leading the ignorant.

  13. texaslady Says:

Well mccain needs liberbman whispering corrects in his ear so are we surprised he picks someone needing the same help. repubs have such a problem admitting mistakes, if mccain had picked a chimp we would hear "what a quick study they are, so don't worry." Yeah right, we had the lazy idiot scene for 8 years we don't need 4 more years.

  14. bob hussein lablah Says:

So in other words, if McSame wins, we'll have TWO economic experts in the White House?

And yet we will hear every negative thing that every negative person in the democrats past have ever said, daily....the media belongs to them. After Olbermans ouster, I am starting to be afraid for the first time.

It won't matter what gaffes these people make - she and MCain are more Teflon than Reagan - It's all reality TV to the voters apparently - Like the Donal Trump show - how well are you liked? What can you get away with while screwing the customer?

Why was every utterance Gore made parsed for falsehood and the Republicans are never called on it. Their entire campaign is based on lying. does the media have something against peace and prosperity - I'm begining to think so.

  18. texaslady Says:

An interview from England this a.m. had a banner across palin's chest saying "mistake". England thinks mccain and palin both incredible mistakes. So, if those two get in, can America be more of a joke internationally ?

  19. texaslady Says:

Think who owns the media ? Talking points come from heads of organizations who will definitely worry about more taxes and more regulations on the media. Trent Lott pulled a late night session to remove regulations on the media, murdock loves that so he can buy and control all the news.

This shows how little you people know. Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac were both created by the goverment as instruments to guarantee mortgages. It was only in 1968 that these two entities were made "private". Now that the tax-payers are bailing them out they have become too expensive. Now whose idea was this? It was FDR a democrat!

  22. sbobker Says:

Hey Gov. Palin said it. That makes it a fact. Didn't you read the last memo?

  23. tombaker Says:

So it has been private (no taxpayer funding) since 1968. Exactly. So, the government bailout (under Bush) is what is costing taxpayers.

Note to you: It is after 1968 now.

Why was every utterance Gore made parsed for falsehood...

Margaret Carlson explains it in her book:

CARLSON (page 105): Gore wanted the snacks to be environmentally and nutritionally correct, but somehow granola bars ended up giving way to Fruit Roll-Ups and the sandwiches came wrapped and looked long past their sell-by date. On a lucky day, someone would remember to buy supermarket doughnuts. By contrast, a typical day of food on Air Bush…consisted of five meals with access to a sixth, if you count grazing at a cocktail bar. Breakfast one was French toast, scrambled eggs, bacon…

    Palin/Lieberman

  30. hanshiro Says:

The fact that the media is soft-pedaling this obscene train-wreck of a candidate points to the indisputable fact that they will try to slip her under the radar by trying to cast her as "brave" and stylish.

Read Greenwald about Olbermann getting yanked from campaign coverage. He nails the media companies and reminds people that the media companies are in this for themselves. Solely. There will be no excoriating of Palin, despite her complete unsuitability to the job and her breathtaking inability to tell the truth. The meme will be dissembled and criticism deflected with the help of the likes of compliant stooges like Brian Williams, David Gregory and Tom Brokaw.

Don't expect the MSM/Pravda to do their jobs. Look to the independents.

Nope. Lieberman is pro-choice. I think she would pick Ralph Reed for VP.

  34. bob hussein lablah Says:

Attila: Fannie Mae was founded in 1938, and privatized in 1968. It is now 2008. So how many years was it government-run, and how many years has it been a private enterprise?

  35. mary Says:

Also not sure if this "gaffe" will even make it onto the typical American's radar. I'll bet most people in this country don't know anything at all about Mae/Mac. And then, assuming that anyone will actually confront Palin about it, if she gets criticized about it a lot of people will unconsciously feel criticized too and get defensive. 'Hey, how should I know? I don't work on Wall Street (like those elitist East Coasters)!'

  36. bob hussein lablah Says:

It is the stupidity of the American people that have created this mess and we are suffering the consequences for their stupidity.

So what's your point? That it wasn't a gaffe because the last briefing Palin received on this subject was back in 1968? Quite a trick, when you figure Palin was only four years old at the time.

You can distract with shiny objects all you want (FDR was indeed a democrat -- nobody will argue with you on that), but that doesn't change the fact that Palin doesn't know a Fannie Mae from a fanny pack, and she's not qualified for the job she's been nominated for.

    _____________________________________________________________

It's amazing how "misstatements" and "misspeaking" have now become synonymous with either deliberate lies or I-have-no-clue-so-I'm-just-making-sh!t-up ignorance.

I always thought that "misspeaking" was sort of more of the brain-fart, oops-I-didn't-mean-that kind of thing (like Obama claiming to have visited 57 states when he meant to say 47 -- he knew he had visited 47, but it just came out wrong).

Now "misstatements" include making stuff up to fit an agenda(the Iranian Shia are training Al Qaeda Sunni terrorists), deliberate lies (Obama is going to raise everybody's taxes), and ignorance on fire, such as Palin is demonstrating.

I guess it's just a cuter term than "outright lying".

I totally agree palin is taking the spotlight off mccain, but God help us if these two do win the election, between mccain's temper and palin's stupidity.

  57. bebop Says:

This issue is probably too arcane for the public. Both Palin and McCain need to be hammered on their fibbing and hypocrisy, McCain especially should be hoisted on the petard of his own words the way Jon Stewart did so ably in McCain Reformed Maverick available on Youtube. Obama needs to put out a series of ads highlighting McCain's duplicity in his own words.

Earth to Palin: Freddie Mae and Fannie Mae are a share-holding corporation. China is one of the largest shareholders for Frannie Mae and Freddie Mac. Can't wait for the Biden-Palin debate.

  60. Fred Says:

    September Surprise
    Get ready for it…

While the rest of the pundits opine about the meaning and implications of Sarah Palin's ascension from small town mayor to prospective vice president – and whether or not her daughter's private life is fair game for any media outlet other than the National Enquirer – those of us whose job it is to stand watch on the ramparts and report the real news are wondering when – not if – the War Party will pull a rabbit out of the proverbial hat. For months, I've been warning in this space that an American attack on Iran is imminent, and now I see that the Dutch have reason to agree with my assessment. Their intelligence service reportedly has pulled out of a covert operation inside Iran on the grounds that a U.S. strike is right around the corner – in "a matter of weeks," according to De Telegraaf, a Dutch newspaper.

"In a secret agreement between Israel and Georgia, two military airfields in southern Georgia had been earmarked for the use of Israeli fighter-bombers in the event of pre-emptive attacks against Iranian nuclear installations.

Iran and Georgia are tied together....

  61. texaslady Says:

Conservatives only hear Obama will raise taxes when you show them it is a 2% increase sometimes they stop hyperventilating. 62. texaslady Says:

Lets see how many "biased" newcasters will be shut up between now and November 4th. Yes, they have mortgages and families but where will the honest information come from ?

  63. mary Says:

I agree bebop. We're better off highlighting stories like this:

'The Palin administration won't release hundreds of emails from her office, claiming they cover confidential policy matters. Then why do the subject lines refer to a political foe, a journalist, and non-policy topics?'

    link

One of the comments under the article (from Mother Jones):

"Please keep up the good work. This kind of information HAS to get out there to the low-information voters! And that is going to be a real job considering most of them are brainwashed with sound-byte politics these days."

    Liz, you are so right...

  64. texaslady Says:

From someone who has been at Wassilla, (a friend) it is a very small town. So, how hard are these executive decisions palin had to make ? And as Governor, the National Guard was hurting for equiptment and recruitment,as of March 08 so what is all this about doing well for them ? So sure of their pick but no questions allowed ?

  65. pete Says:

You forgot to mention Palin's temper and McSpin's stupidity, texaslady. They both have long records of attacking anyone who doesn't accept their crap as Gospel.

One must have a sort of admiration for the GOP in finding two candidates who just might be MORE stupid, aggressive, reckless, and radical than Chimp-n-Dick. They seem fully capable of following the tradition of Believing their own contrived intelligence. And if Palin ever gains any real power she might give the Dick a run in the "pure evil" category.

  67. pete Says:

    Points of Order:

    1. In light of the fact that Ms. Palin's speech did not contain a single true statement about her opponents policies, I contend that this is far from her FIRST gaffe. That bridge was crossed the first time she spoke on the record back in Alaska.

    2. I propose that from here on we call GOP lies, "lies". Don't belittle the crime.

When asked if Palin believed in traditional marriage, that is marriage between a man and a woman, Palin responded that yes, she does believe in traditional marriage as defined by our "Constitution and our founding fathers". Apparently, this was on some survey she took. I heard about it a couple of days ago on Hardball or Countdown (sorry, I don't remember which one).

I think this is a bigger gaffe considering that our Constitution in no way defines marriage and I seriously doubt that our founding fathers sat around and deliberated what would constitute a traditional marriage.

Has she even read the Constitution of the United States of America?

  83. Beethoven Rules Says:

You think she believes there are 57 states like obama does?

  84. Tahut Says:

What I find interesting in this bailout is all the Democrats are having a serious problem seeing the forest because of all the trees.

Note what's been happening in 2008:

    1) BearStearns bailout. The central bank has agreed to lend JPMorgan $29 billion.
    2) IndyMac. FDIC said the cost will be even worse than its previous worst-case-scenario estimate: $8.9 billion.
    3) FannieMae/FreddieMac. The Bush administration's seizure of troubled mortgage giants Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac is potentially a $200 billion bet that it will help reverse a prolonged housing and credit crisis.

Now the financial side of the market has fought tooth and nail against regulation. With the demise of the Glass-Segal Act in 1999(thanks Phil Gramm) the financial market had free rein to do as they pleased. It's now 2008, 9 years after the GSA expired and we have one hell of a mess thanks to the repugs.

Now, look at those trees that keeps you from seeing the forest. Notice something is changing? It's an infestation. For some strange reason you can't see what it is, but other countries do and they have a name for it. Socialism.

Our free market is having to turn to socialism, via government intervention, in order to keep its head above the flood of bad debt they created. Our government is having to take over the management of these firms. Sounds so Communist Soviet Union to me.

My point is, the repugs have fight against socialized medicine for all Americans, but they have no problem coughing up the cash to keep financial institutions from going under.

So the public is expected to work thru their health issues on their own and not expect a handout from the government, while large financial institutions are able to go to the federal feeding trough when they have sudden catastrophic conditions arise thru their own fault and neglect.

    I think I need a big chainsaw.

    http://www.nytimes.com/2008/09/08/business/08fannie.html?_r=1&hp&oref=slogin

I think it's a big deal. Why? Two reasons. One, Carlyle wants the Fed/Treasury to loosen regulations for investing in banks. There could be a tit-for-tat. We'll give you David Moffett for that banking regulation change. It fits with Carlyle's & BushCo's modus operandi.

Second, Carlyle Capital Corporation is in the process of being rolled up. Freddie Mac could buy their bonds back first or at a more preferred rate. It's something for an internal auditor or external accounting firm to watch for.

But John McCain wants to reduce regulations and accounting standards!

This shows how little you people know. Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac were both created by the goverment as instruments to guarantee mortgages. It was only in 1968 that these two entities were made “private”. Now that the tax-payers are bailing them out they have become too expensive. Now whose idea was this? It was FDR a democrat!
    >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

No this shows how STUPID you are. Pretty much as stupid as most rightwingers rivalling a ball of lint in the IQ dept. Yeah we KNOW that they were created during the depression to help people buy homes. No one here said anything else. However they started to make money so OF COURSE they were sold to private interests. That was over 40 YEARS AGO. I assume Palin hasnt been in a coma or in a cave in Sri Lanka for the last forty years exactly what does 1938 have to do with 2008? You do know you are a complete moron dont you?

The truth is this country has ALWAYS had socialism for the rich. If you are a mom and pop business you better watch that bottom line but if you are a big corporation there never WAS any risk for you. The taxpayer has ALWAYS been there to bail them out.

But, many (not all) of the gaffes that Democrats highlight of Republicans are also slips of the tongues that they type to exploit. It happens on both sides.

No it isnt fair to say Democrats do the same thing. For instance when Bush said that our enemies never stop thinking of ways to hurt America and neither will we. Dems didnt keep harping on what obviously was a slip of the tongue and pretending that Bush meant what he said. Also Palin is LYING about the bridge not a slip of the tongue that she made twenty times or more. This Fannie Mae thing also NOT a slip of the tongue it was the point she was making and THAT cant be a slip of the tongue

Is it not odd, EugeneDebs, how they can say, "Republicans say what they mean and mean what they say and stick with it no matter what" then, when one of them says something that's flat-out wrong and dishonest, it becomes an "innocent mistake"?
    What bloody rot!

I have to agree with EugeneDebs who says:

The truth is this country has ALWAYS had socialism for the rich. If you are a mom and pop business you better watch that bottom line but if you are a big corporation there never WAS any risk for you. The taxpayer has ALWAYS been there to bail them out.

The problem is, we're not supposed to notice that the middle class taxpayer is always bailing out the rich. We're always told "Pay no attention to that man behind the curtain." Those of us who see through the smoke and mirrors are made out to be malcontents, crazy, or both (and sometimes anti-American, too).

Fannie and Freddie aren't supposed to be taxpayer supported, but they are. There has always been that government guarantee there. And the administrators of the two purposely took on loans from people whom they KNEW were mortgaging property for more than it would be worth once the real estate market settled down and the administrators KNEW those people would eventually not be able to afford the payments-- many were VERY bad risks to start with-- and they made the loans anyway. Why? Two reasons. First, those administrators were earning highly paid bonuses based on how much business they did. Second, they figured there was little chance that the taxpayers wouldn't be forced to bail out Fannie and Freddie.

Hey, people, if you think that middle class taxpayers haven't been involved in paying toward those loans even before big bailout time, you haven't been looking behind the curtain.

Do you realize that one of those bigwigs who lost his job and was under indictment cut a deal that supposedly cost him $25 million, but $16 million was in stock options wherein he had the option to buy stock at $70/share that's now selling for $9/share? The rest of the $25 million was in things like insurance, retirement, etc. What did he really lose? Nothing! And all of the top cats at Fannie and Freddie have taken millions in bonuses that they're never going to have to pay back, even though they committed malfeasance in their jobs. Who's going to pay the real $1.6 trillion this fiasco is going to cost-- not the billions we've been told it will cost? Those of us making between $60,000 and $175,000 in income annually. Not the rich, the middle class-- again.

In this Gov. Palin didn't state the whole magilla, but if that's not a tax...

    ...and wait! There is more!!!!!
    This is from DEMOCRACYNOW:
Palin: Iraq War is a “Task” from God
In campaign news, a video has emerged of Republican vice-presidential nominee Sarah Palin telling ministry students at her former church that the US invasion of Iraq is a task from God.

Sarah Palin: “Pray for our military men and women who are striving to do what is right. Also, for this country, that our leaders, our national leaders, are sending them out on a task that is from God. That’s what we have to make sure that we’re praying for, that there is a plan and that that plan is God’s plan. So bless them with your prayers, your prayers of protection over our soldiers.”

During the same address, Palin said the construction of a new oil pipeline in Alaska is God’s will.

Sarah Palin: “I can do my part in doing things like working really, really hard to get a natural gas pipeline, about a $30 billion project that’s going to create a lot of jobs for Alaskans, and we’ll have a lot of energy flowing through here. And pray about that also. I think God’s will has to be done in unifying people and companies to get that gas line built, so pray for that.”

The video of her speech was originally posted on the Wasilla Assembly of God’s website

This is another example that the "old world jounalism of Murrow, Cronkite and Rather is dead and buried. There is a great disconnect with what happened and the points made by ABC. She asks little of no questions to ABC. She takes what is handed to her and repeats it vebatim and then calls that reporting. I call is stenography. Lida Sohbet sohbet sesli chat Gelinlik Modelleri

That pre-9/11 August 10, 2000 article drives the point home to me that Cheney had a vested interest in the oil at the Caspian Sea area (before 9/11).
