MSNBC is removing Keith Olbermann and Chris Matthews as the anchors of live political events, “bowing to growing criticism that they are too opinionated to be seen as neutral.” David Gregory will take over the anchor seat for events such as this fall’s presidential and vice presidential debates and election night.
A CQ analysis finds that this year, federal lawmakers in both parties “have opposed the president far more often than at any other time since he’s been in the White House, and the erosion in support is dramatic among Republicans.” GOP House members, for example, supported Bush 94 percent of the time in 2001 and 2003, but just 63 percent in 2008.
Alaska lawmakers “are scheduled to meet Friday to decide whether to issue subpoenas” to members of Gov. Sarah Palin’s (R-AK) administration as part of their investigation into abuse of power allegations against Palin. The McCain campaign has also endorsed a plan by “key Alaska allies” to derail the investigation to prevent it from producing “embarrassing information” about Palin before the election.
Palin’s church, Wasilla Bible Church, is “promoting a conference that promises to convert gays into heterosexuals through the power of prayer.” “You’ll be encouraged by the power of God’s love and His desire to transform the lives of those impacted by homosexuality,” reads a recent insert in the church’s bulletin describing Focus on the Family’s upcoming Love Won Out Conference in Anchorage.
On the trail today: John McCain and Sarah Palin will hold a rally this morning in Lee’s Summit, MO. Barack Obama “returns to Michigan today to discuss the economy at events in Flint and Farmington Hills.”
In a move that will spare conservatives from a politically difficult vote before the November elections, “Congressional Democrats have scrapped plans for another vote on expansion of the Children’s Health Insurance Program.” Democrats concluded “that President Bush would not sign their legislation and that they could not override his likely veto.” Bush has already twice vetoed similar legislation.
Declaring that clergy “have a constitutional right to endorse political candidates from their pulpits, the socially conservative Alliance Defense Fund is recruiting several dozen pastors to do just that on Sept. 28, in defiance of Internal Revenue Service rules.”
“Cellphone pictures taken in the aftermath of a U.S. military operation in Afghanistan are providing new evidence that a large number of civilians may have been mistakenly killed by American troops last month,” according to NATO officials. The images show at least 11 dead children; the U.S. military has insisted that only five to seven civilian were killed.
Gen. David Petraeus will hand over the command of U.S.-led forces in Iraq to Gen. Raymond Odierno on September 16. The Fort Worth Star-Telegram writes that “questions linger, as they did not for Petraeus, about how ready Odierno is for the strategic challenges of Iraq.”
Libyan leader and former terrorist sponsor Moammar Gadhafi dined with Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice last week, completing “a remarkable five-year rehabilitation.” Gadhafi presented Rice with several gifts, including “a locket with an engraved likeness of himself inside.”
And finally: The AP reports, “Should this world ever cease to exist, Stephen Colbert will live on. The comedian’s DNA will be digitized and sent to the International Space Station.” Essentially, Colbert will be preserved so that “aliens can clone him.” Colbert said that this move brings him one step closer to his “lifelong dream of being the baby at the end of 2001,” referring to the science fiction film, “2001: A Space Odyssey.”

On a more serious note, during the football games, McSame ran a commercial geared for Michiganders.
It basically states that Obama and an OUT OF TOUCH congress have no idea how to run a country, that they will raise taxes and leave everyone in turmoil due to their inexperience.
1) The out of touch congress is the fault of the right who were in control for 6 years, then filibustered their a$$ the last 2.
2) This country is already in the grasp of a great recession, is currently in a record deficit, and unemployment is almost unheard of. All because of a Republican controlled government. McSame voted 90% with Bush. Anyone see the correlation?
3) It is extremely important that Democrats continue to gain seats both in the House, and Senate, to counter the chance of McSame stealing an election. In my heart, I believe Obama will win in a landslide. The problem, is that the media keeps force feeding us McSame/Palin to the point where if the race is that close, I believe the Republicans can steal another (caging Ohio, anyone?).

Nearly 600,000 Subject to Possible Caging in Ohio
How many voter-registration mass mailers are “returned to sender” in the run-up to Election Day may determine how many Ohio residents are eligible to vote.
Ohio election officials are sending out a mass mailer stamped “do not forward” to all registered voters today (Sept. 5) with an absentee ballot application and other important notices for Nov. 4.
What’s important here is not so much what’s going out as what’s being returned to sender.
Unbeknownst to the would-be recipients, the same mailer — just 60 days before the election — has the potential to determine their eligibility to vote, challenged not by election officials but by partisan opposition.
A similar mailer in March netted nondeliverable mail from almost 600,000 registered voters in just five Ohio counties who could now have their ballots thrown out for voting under the wrong address.
The National Voter Registration Act prohibits any state from purging names from the voting rolls within 90 days of an election.

I have no memory of any practice of duck and cover before the 4th grade (1954) and the last memory of irrational fear came from my 10th grade Biology teacher (1960). He walked into the classroom late one day and began to berate the class for the idle chatter they were engaged in while the school building and the classroom we were in were venerable to being struck by an errant airplane from the airport. He then talked about why Nixon should be the next president. After the election of JFK the schools no longer taught fear.

Manufacturers turn to US
The latest cheap manufacturing site for European companies is not in Asia or eastern Europe but the United States, say top executives from some of the continent’s biggest companies.
“It may sound like a joke but it can be cheaper than you imagine to manufacture there,” the chairman of one of Germany’s largest automobile groups told the Financial Times.
Tennessee, for instance, has just disclosed that it agreed to give German carmaker Volkswagen $577m in incentives for its $1bn plant in Chattanooga.
A senior executive at Fiat, the Italian industrial conglomerate, said: “With the amount of money US states are willing to throw at you, you would be stupid to turn them down at the moment. It is one of the low-cost locations to be in at the moment.”
A VW official suggested the US also had a competitive advantage because European Union state aid rules made support for factories difficult. “It is more difficult in Europe.”
“States are willing to pay for new roads, re-train workers and offer huge tax breaks – that is a competitive package that not many parts of the world can match when you look at how productive US workers are and where the dollar is,” said the chairman of a large Swiss group.
But he also said the move meant extra revenue of $500m a year and a net $1bn in new tax revenues and “that sounds like a pretty good business proposition to me”.

With Palin’s statement on Iraq, we cannot help being reminded that President Bush also sees his war as having the blessing of his god.
According to the AP, Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin had the following to say during an address last year to ministry students at her former church:
Our national leaders are sending them out on a task that is from God. That’s what we have to make sure that we’re praying for, that there is a plan and that plan is God’s plan.
Perhaps even worse, Palin clearly sees herself as doing the will of her god in nearly every political task she undertakes. This is an extremely dangerous type of delusion because it leads to absolute certainty without consideration of alternative possibilities. We saw the consequences with Bush, and we’re likely to see more with McSame/Palin.
Palin also sounds increasingly dangerous to American atheists. Consider the following quote and then see how it sounds if you replace “Alaska” with “America.” Chilling.
I can do my job there in developing our natural resources and doing things like getting the roads paved and making sure our troopers have their cop cars and their uniforms and their guns, and making sure our public schools are funded,” she added. “But really all of that stuff doesn’t do any good if the people of Alaska’s heart isn’t right with God.
I agree with Americans United for Separation of Church and State. We do not need politicians who act like national pastors; we need leaders who unite diverse individuals around policy goals.

September 8th, 2008 at 10:06 amA CQ a n a l y s i s finds that this year, federal lawmakers in both parties “have opposed the president far more often than at any other time since he’s been in the White House, and the erosion in support is dramatic among Republicans.” GOP House members, for example, supported Bush 94 percent of the time in 2001 and 2003, but just 63 percent in 2008.
More proof that McCain is a maverick. While GOP House members only supported Bush 63% of the time this past year, the Maverick supported Bush over 90% of the time!

The Financial Times reports the US military provided combat training to 80 Georgian special forces commandos only months prior to Georgia’s army assault in South Ossetia in August. The training was provided by senior US soldiers and two private military contractors – MPRI and American Systems, both based in Virginia. The revelation could add fuel to accusations by Russia that the US had orchestrated the war in the Georgian enclave.

Here’s my take on all of this, Bilbo… I don’t think I’ve ever seen an electorate as splintered as this year’s. You’ve got voters coming out for the first black candidate in American history and voters who’ll NEVER vote for a lack man, no matter what.
They say the Evangelicals are all a-twitter over Palin, but Obama raised nearly 8 times as much money following her speech. As far as I can tell, it’s almost impossible to tell WTF is going on right now. Fuster cluck, indeed!
September 8th, 2008 at 10:10 amAnd to my prior post, you can also add: a steep drop in registered GOOPers, a big increase in registered Dems, but ugly rumors of massive voter caging schemes in states like Ohio.
Like I said, a real fuster cluck.

I still think the polls are skewed, and that when you look at state-by-state breakdowns, with Bob Barr factored in, Obama wins pretty handily.
______________________________________________________
They ARE skewed, and there are two main factors for this. First is the policy of pollsters to talk to “likely voters” — defined by their voter history — which leaves out the millions of new voters who registered to vote in the Democratic primaries. And most of them are Democrats.
Second is that most pollsters still use land lines, and will only talk to live people, not voice mail. This disproportionately skews against younger voters and people who screen their calls, leaving the older voters being the ones polled.
I have seen estimates ranging from 5 to 8 points as the amount that polls can be skewed toward McCain because of these factors.
The MSM likes the polls the way they are, though, because a perceived tight race makes for better ratings for them. So they’re not likely to rock the boat by pointing out polling discrepancies.
The problem with tight polls for us is that when the election is stolen, the polling evidence will back up the thieves. I just hope that every Obama voter will cooperate with any exit pollsters they encounter and truthfully say they voted for Obama instead of trying to mess with them. If the exit polls show a tsunami for Obama and the “official” results don’t, it makes it harder for the crooks.

If you look at CNN’s electorial map, it shows Obama signoficantly ahead in a state-by-state battle. so really, the national polls are pointless, since it’s not a national competition. Probably why no one is playing up the actual electorate polling – in that case, there’sno high-intensity drama.

Keith Olbermann and Chris Matthews are to progressives as O’Reilly and Glen Beck are to conservatives.
I understand the appeals to the different groups, but none are anywhere close to objectivity and don’t belong at any venue that requires at least a facade of neutrality.
MSNBC did the right thing.
September 8th, 2008 at 11:33 amI suggest we all watch nothing but KO and Matthews the rest of the year. MSNBC has told us the rest of their staff are shills for the Republican party.

“I understand the appeals to the different groups, but none are anywhere close to objectivity and don’t belong at any venue that requires at least a facade of neutrality.”
Except for the subtle difference in that Mr. Olberman points out lying pundits and political hacks while the FAUX brigade IS the White Houses propaganda branch. The media games are not all that different from the political games:
“I have been thinking that I would make a proposition to my Republican friends… that if they will stop telling lies about the Democrats, we will stop telling the truth about them.”
Adlai E. Stevenson Jr.
September 8th, 2008 at 12:08 pmKeith Olbermann and Chris Matthews are to progressives as O’Reilly and Glen Beck are to conservatives.
False equation. Matthews is nominally democratic – forget about his being progressive. He said “case closed” when Powell made his UN WMD presentation, and gushed over Bush’s air-craft carrier landing. He’s a Hamptonite, with all that entails; clubbish adherence to Corporate Conventional Wisdom, Beltway backslapping for those who echo his thoughts and concerns, and unwillingness to embrace the progressive viewpoint while using their work to make himself look good.
September 8th, 2008 at 12:14 pmbarfly. I see what you saying about Matthews in the past. But, would you agree that Olbermann is partisan.
September 8th, 2008 at 12:21 pmRepublicans stretch the truth and sometimes say things that are just false.
But, neither party has a monopoly on the truth.
I watched Obama’s speech in Denver. In it, he said that McCain is out of touch, because he believes that the threshold for being rich in America is an annual income of 5 million dollars. He was serious – he was not joking. The problem is, that McCain was joking. And Obama knew it.
Spend the five minutes and make up your own mind:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bo9Pgg-RAcE&feature=related
Obama was at Saddleback. He knows what McCain said in context. But, he distorted it to the American people anyway.
You really expect me to believe that Democrats have a monopoly on the truth?
September 8th, 2008 at 12:37 pmIt’s not partisan to ask the same questions of the protected right and have the facts. It is partisan to ask softball questions and make the right look good in the face of crimes committed.
Once again you show how incredibly partisan you are.
September 8th, 2008 at 12:40 pmNo but one party….the republicans would rather lie than tell the truth, even if the truth would be just as good. It’s a lifestyle.
September 8th, 2008 at 12:42 pmI found some footage of Obama repeating the dishonest characterization of McCain’s Saddleback answer.
Starts at about 50 seconds til about the 1 minute point of the video:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wPTpH9i5YUY
Again, he knew what McCain said at Saddleback. I’m not saying that Republican’s are honest. But, if you think that Democrats don’t stretch the true or tell out and out falsehoods; you live in fantasyland.
September 8th, 2008 at 12:47 pmRepublicans can only tell the truth IF it’s a good marketing move — and right now, the truth is not on their side.
September 8th, 2008 at 12:48 pmYou have once again shown that you are a shill for the right as well. Anyone who thinks oliely compares to Olberaman in the field of objectivity is a person with a right wing agenda, period. You have no credibility until you start to make some kind of sense.
September 8th, 2008 at 12:49 pmI would like to add to the thread, a HAPPY BELATED 72ND BIRHTDAY TO JOHN McCAIN! Notice how much the media ignored this event as not to remind us that he is OLD! Or to not remind us that he and Bush were celebrating a past birthday of his while the coast was being hit by Katrina.

Riiiiiiiiiiight…
“The conservative Media Research Center awarded Gregory Best White House Correspondent for coverage of Bush’s first 100 days.
Naaaaaah… ain’t gonna be any partisan bias there…
MSNBC did what they wanted to. It’s hardly up to you to decide it was “the right thing”…
Once again, ascribing the authority of judgement to yourself… well, because you have epaulets on your smoking jacket, I guess…
Are you ever NOT a sneaky, duplicitous Shi’ite?
September 8th, 2008 at 12:53 pmyou are able to disect one statement of Obama’s into a posible misrepresentation and you seriously want to compare that to the smears and lies told by the right on so many counts that they can’t be counted.
If that is the best you can do then how can you even believe what you are saying….oh yeah, you don’t.
September 8th, 2008 at 12:54 pmFred. I see how you can think I’m partisan. Maybe you’re right. But, it doesn’t really matter.
There was growing criticism of the pair (not just from me) and MSNBC decided to pull them.
Maybe I’m partisan, the growing number of complaints were partisan, and/or the management at MSNBC is also partisan.
Or maybe, Olbermann and Matthews are too partisan to be objective during election coverage.
I’ve got the occurrences at MSNBC (the complaints and removals) to back up my claims.
So far, all I have from you is your opinion.
September 8th, 2008 at 12:55 pmIt is laughable to describe Olbermann as ‘opinionated’ when in fact everyday television stations do nothing but brainwash us all day long, using big army of talkers.
September 8th, 2008 at 12:59 pmSo many talking heads are feeding the public with varieties of stupid opinions daily from surise to midnight.
Some of these opinion makers are so boring, and empty.
Olbermann is taking the heat because he says what’s needed to be said, and his opinions are not welcomed by people in this government and the Right wingers because they prefer to see someone who is in agreement with them all the time, which is the opposite of Olbermann,or see Olbermann silenced.
Whatever backup. We know who owns these media outlets and we know what thier agenda is. If you want to put forth the idea that this happened because of complaints then you must understand that we think you are part of the problem, not the solution.
It’s the same as you saying that most Americans are conservative when you can only back that up with forged documents…..oh yeah, that’s how you prove everything…..remember the vial that powell held up at the UN?…..remember the chemical trucks? Why can’t you guys back up your lies? Oh yeah, you don’t have to.
September 8th, 2008 at 1:01 pmI didn’t complain to MSNBC and I didn’t say that most Americans are conservative. (Although, I’ve linked current polling that shows McCain with a small lead to make the point that progressives may be overconfident of November victory).
September 8th, 2008 at 1:10 pmNearly 600,000 Subject to Possible Caging in Ohio
I think we ought to ask the UN to monitor this election!
September 8th, 2008 at 1:12 pmSee, you would rather lie than tell the truth when the truth would be just as good…..true to form.
You tried to use one questionable statement by Obama to say that the dems are just as big of liars as the right and now you want to change the reality…..big surprise there.
September 8th, 2008 at 1:17 pmI think I said that Democrats don’t have a monopoly on the truth, not that they are as big a liars as the right.
September 8th, 2008 at 1:20 pmWell if we are going to compare one statement to tens of thousands of deliberat lies then you might have a case…..I don’t believe the comparison is valid.
Done with you troll. Try a new invective.
September 8th, 2008 at 1:26 pmI gave one example to make the point. I’ll bet there’s probably more than just one.
They’re politicians, my friend. The effort to paint all republicans as dishonest, while democrats courageously carry the banner of truth, is a little over the top. And as the tactic becomes more blatant, it’s much less credible.
September 8th, 2008 at 1:35 pmWhere is the media on this story? A US citizen was tortured at the RNC. He speaks out. Indy media, especially photogs, were detained and arrested, medics were targeted for abuse.
September 8th, 2008 at 1:41 pmAll republicans are dishonest. Some democrats are too but the comparison is not equal. As I said, all republicans are dishonest, period. I’m not interested in being credible with you any more than you are interested in being credible…..at all.
September 8th, 2008 at 1:45 pmUS waves goodbye to prosperity and democracy
If you were wondering what all the flag-waving at the Republican convention has been about, it is now clear. Americans are waving goodbye to the prosperity the nation has enjoyed since the Great Depression and a final goodbye to democracy.
September 8th, 2008 at 1:51 pmI think I’m interested in credibility. I agree that there are a lot of examples of Republican fabrication and deception. Maybe more than their Democrat counterparts.
But, there is plenty to go around on either side. It’s up to the individual to ferret out the fact from the fiction. You can trust neither party.
September 8th, 2008 at 1:52 pmYou can’t trust the republicans for sure.
September 8th, 2008 at 2:03 pmIf a known liar, a liar with credentials, tells you that you can’t trust the other guy too……well, you know.
That’s what the republicans are running on. Trying to make democrats look like they are just as bad as republicans…….they may get away with it but it’s still not true.
September 8th, 2008 at 2:09 pmFred. After the last eight years, you’ve got a point. If Obama becomes President in January, I hope for a real change to less of the typical partisan dishonesty. (I think Obama has done relatively well, in that regard, during his campaign) But, if the past is any guide, you can understand my skepticism of both parties.

Obama 301 McCain 224 Ties 13
The internet network will pull us through.

September 8th, 2008 at 5:06 pmMore viewers for CNN !!!!!!
Okay RightOfAttila but what should we do with those frothing folks like Hannity, Limbaugh, etal? I’ll agree that no one takes them seriously as journalists and all but a few whack jobs realize that are just sideshow shock entertainers who just say lines prepared to stir their viewers but don’t you think that shallow sort of entertainment dumbs down polite society?
September 8th, 2008 at 5:14 pmMSNBC is removing Keith Olbermann and Chris Matthews as the anchors of live political events, “bowing to growing criticism that they are too opinionated to be seen as neutral.” David Gregory will take over the anchor seat for events such as this fall’s presidential and vice presidential debates and election night.
Well, their ratings will plummet.
BIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIG Mistake.

September 8th, 2008 at 8:45 pmSo we’re gonna shut down the remaining few somewhat liberal talkers, while we egg on and applaud the 90%+ right wing hater talkers?? With the excuse being, we can’t have bias!! My head hurts, my feet hurt. Sarah can lie, lie, lie; but Keith can’t speak the truth. Excuse me, I must have been mistaken. I thought this was the USA. I hurt everywhere, but I’ll crawl to the voting booth and hope it’s still there and they believe I am who I say I am.
September 9th, 2008 at 9:27 amMSNBC shouldn’t have removed Olbie. They just needed to remind him that there is a difference in reporting and giving his opinion. If they can get him to remember that, and to calm himself a little, he will be more of a asset than just host of Countdown.
