Last month, House conservatives engaged in a political stunt in the Capitol, demanding a vote on oil drilling while Congress was adjourned for recess. Minority Leader John Boehner (R-OH), however, was absent for part of the protest, squeezing in a couple of rounds of golf in Ohio while his colleagues were in Washington. Speaking today on the floor, Boehner claimed he was there “each and every day”:
Well, Mr. Speaker, let me say welcome to my Democratic colleagues. Welcome to the House. … While you all were out, I and my Republican colleagues were here each and every day with the lights dimmed, the microphones off, no one in the chair, the cameras off, talking to visitors who were coming through the Capitol about our plan to produce all of the above.
Watch it:
I’m sure he wept as well… missing that 4 foot putt.
September 9th, 2008 at 4:35 pmDrinking lunch again…?
September 9th, 2008 at 4:35 pm4 day work week under republicans, why the change of heart? You seem kinda like a phony to me boner. By the way, you belong in a dark room with no one there. Win/win for all other human beings.
September 9th, 2008 at 4:36 pmWhatever, their little ploy seems to have worked. Nancy P is scheduling a vote. Who wants to bet it will pass? So much for saying no . . . just like with any 3 year old you’ve got to be firm and mean it or they’ll just spend a month throwing a fit in an effort to make a mockery out of you. Heckuva job, Nancy. Heckuva job.
September 9th, 2008 at 4:37 pmOil companies have 68 million acres leased to drill in already. Start there!
If there’s little or no oil there, then why did they lease them?!
September 9th, 2008 at 4:39 pmWell, Mr.
Well Mr Crybaby
Let me just say that the lights dimmed, the microphones off, no one in the chair, and the cameras off is what the GOP should be relegated to from now on ……………..
September 9th, 2008 at 4:39 pmHe was there in spirit, dontcha know? One hole in the ground is as good as any other.
September 9th, 2008 at 4:40 pmthey just don’t care about the truth, and the media won’t hold them accountable.
Whaddaya gonna do? those crazy republicans.
September 9th, 2008 at 4:41 pmAlready bucking the trend? C’mon, “Boehner lies about his golfing vacation, says he was at GOP drilling protest ‘each and every day.’, a lie”
September 9th, 2008 at 4:42 pmI listened to most of the Repugnicant protests. They never once addressed why gas prices soared, while miles driven cratered and OPEC oil demand fell.
Yet, those Supermen claimed their protest caused prices to drop. Evidence of their arrogance and ignorance…
September 9th, 2008 at 4:44 pmLeave it to the Republicans to brag about sitting in the dark talking to themselves.
September 9th, 2008 at 4:47 pmI and my Republican colleagues were here each and every day with the lights dimmed, the microphones off, no one in the chair, the cameras off
- – So, no one was home both metaphorically and literally, eh Johnny?
September 9th, 2008 at 4:47 pmsqueezing in a couple of rounds of golf
TP – where’s the link to that?
September 9th, 2008 at 4:48 pmLiar.
September 9th, 2008 at 4:49 pmhey – i just remembered -
September 9th, 2008 at 4:52 pmwhatever happened on part 2 of the oLIElly interview with obama?
Unfortunatly, that crap plays to the idiots, and thanks to Baked Alaska, there are many more of them…
September 9th, 2008 at 4:53 pmPalosi=Palousy. Enough! Throw her out as Speaker. She sucks!

If it’s the bill they were considering before the break, the Republicans aren’t going to support it. The bill has provisions for clean renewable energy, says that the oil companies have to drill their current leases before they get new ones and limits the amount of time they can have a lease without drilling. There is a provision for “limited” drilling off the continental shelf, but only after all the other provisions are met first.
It’s going to be interesting to see how the Republicans are going to protest the bill because it is giving them what they want…after a fashion. But it will also get us a lot of things we want NOW.
September 9th, 2008 at 5:00 pmBefore you get your panties in a wad about Pelosi allowing a energy bill out for vote, read this:

September 9th, 2008 at 5:04 pmIs lying just genetic with these guys, or what? Pathological.
September 9th, 2008 at 5:05 pmWTF “awaiting moderation”???

September 9th, 2008 at 5:07 pmIt isn’t that Boehner lies and exaggerates. That’s a given, and he certainly isn’t unique.
It’s that he is claiming (falsely) that he participated in this ridiculous stunt, which is the same as claiming he’s an idiot.
Playing golf instead of pandering to the stupid actually showed some sense.
But the GOP is in such deep doo-doo for this election after eight years of Bushco that all they have left is loud chest-beating on the issue of drilling. Or, more accurately, handing yet more goodies to Big Oil.
Kind of pathetic when you look at them.

Of course they are. Don’t ya know that the left isn’t allowed to have a voice in the “librul media.”
September 9th, 2008 at 5:11 pmMaybe its time to invoke the oath as in a trial when politicians take to the Senate floor. I can’t believe we live in a day where a drunk like Boehner can run around lying and will most likely never be asked by a politican why he did this.
September 9th, 2008 at 5:19 pmCaught in another of his tangled webs!
September 9th, 2008 at 5:20 pmBoehner was trying to strike oil by digging divots.
September 9th, 2008 at 5:25 pmLying stupid sack of crap.
September 9th, 2008 at 5:29 pmEven if US production were to increase dramatically, (five to seven years from now) OPEC would just reduce their output accordingly. Oil is down to $102 a barrel today and OPEC is talking about having emergency meetings. “Drill here, drill now” will never result in “pay less”.
September 9th, 2008 at 5:36 pmRepublicans do not know how to tell the truth. They’re pathetic, and what disgusting role models.
September 9th, 2008 at 5:54 pmWhile you all were out, I and my Republican colleagues were here each and every day – Boehner
Sorry, but I just reread that line, & it’s worth repeating: Republicans do not know how to be honest. This liar wasn’t there, and he knows he wasn’t there, yet he says he was. They’re either blatant, pathological liars, or mentally delusional. I’m so sick of their dishonesty. All Americans should be. Republicans have made lying a family value. Sad.
September 9th, 2008 at 5:59 pmdepends on what your definition of “here” is.
September 9th, 2008 at 6:03 pmBawlin’ John Boehner is an avid golfer. His moto is, if you don’t cheat at golf then you are not really playing golf. He was a golfer even before he was a politician – maybe the cheating part was already part of his nature.
Was the Palin baby sedated by the GOP for the convention?
September 9th, 2008 at 6:40 pmWhy are we wasting so much valuable land and resources maintaining all these courses when we could be developing and drilling them?
September 9th, 2008 at 7:22 pm“Tan Salon Boner Boy forgets his golfing vacation, says he was at GOP drilling protest ‘each and every day.’”
Spare me. Pass the popcorn please….
September 9th, 2008 at 7:34 pmWhat was that 3 Dog Night Song? Ah, yes: Liar….liar, liar…
September 9th, 2008 at 8:48 pmBoner is drinking again.
September 9th, 2008 at 9:36 pmThis is pretty thin stuff. Boehner did not say he was there every day; he said “I and my Republican colleagues were here each and every day.” Claiming that he was lying is simply inaccurate.
TP seems to have this problem of resorting to cheap shots on a consistent basis. That headline from earlier this week that identified the new administrator of Fannie Mae as McCain’s national finance chairman was eye-catching–and would have been accurate if it weren’t for the fact that he was McCain’s chairman in 2000.
This sort of cutesy playing with the facts does a disservice to TP’s readers and its politics. You can do better.
