Speaking to a Georgia morning news show last Thursday, GOP congressional candidate Rick Goddard criticized an MSNBC reporter’s sharp questioning of former House speaker Newt Gingrich at the Republican National Convention. Goddard called the African-American reporter, Ron Allen, “uppity“:
I’ll tell you one thing, I think we’re going to have a very, very strong, capable president in John McCain. Last night, Newt Gingrich disarmed a very uppity newscaster who tried to question him on the capabilities and leadership of Governor Palin. There’s simply no comparison between a governor and a community organizer.
Also last Thursday, another prominent Georgia political figure — Rep. Lynn Westmoreland (R) — used the racial epithet in reference to Sen. Barack Obama (D-IL). Watch the segment between Allen and Gingrich here.
The rethuglican racism is alive and well in the deep south.
September 9th, 2008 at 8:15 pmI’m tellin ya’, Lincoln should let ‘em go.
September 9th, 2008 at 8:16 pmGeorgia just gave a black eye to the entire U.S. I thought it was bad when one of my brothers moved to Alabama (please, no disrespect meant), but it seems Georgia exists in a time warp. Do the (presumably) good people of Georgia want these blatant racists reperesenting them. We’ll see.
September 9th, 2008 at 8:17 pmObama is not a community organizer, he is a sitting senator of the United States of America.
September 9th, 2008 at 8:18 pm“There’s simply no comparison between a governor and a community organizer.”
Nor is there between a sitting U. S. Senator and a mayor of a town of 7,000, cracker. If you wanna play that stupid game, that is.
September 9th, 2008 at 8:19 pmDammit, dbadass. Too quick for me again.
September 9th, 2008 at 8:19 pmIt was nice of Gen. Goddard to remove his hood for the photograph.
September 9th, 2008 at 8:20 pmThe Repugnants are showing again and again that they are the party of divisive, racist hate-mongering.
September 9th, 2008 at 8:23 pmWhat is with these idiots? I guess they won’t back down because they know corporate media really doesn’t want to show blatant racism and then might have to have an honest discussion. Instead, repukes consistently call Obama out for “playing the race card.” They are terrified that Obama is gaining ground in the south and hope to play to past racial fears. This can’t be allowed. It is way past time to put this issue out and deal with it.
September 9th, 2008 at 8:25 pmFor real ralph, why does that keep happening? Hey I know it is oT but do you think D is getting his hopes up regarding the CERN experiment at the Large Hadron Collider tomorrow?
September 9th, 2008 at 8:26 pmStay classy, white trash!
September 9th, 2008 at 8:31 pmFasten your seatbelts, it’s gonna be a bumpy election season.
Expect more of this as the racists get more desperate.
September 9th, 2008 at 8:31 pmbristol bf uses the same repugs talking points, calling Blacks “sambo” and Alaska’s indigenous people “Arctic Arabs.”
Dave Lindorff: This Country is Nuts!
Even in Alaska racist aholes exist. Welcome to the plain family buttcheeks, I’m sure you’ll fit in.
September 9th, 2008 at 8:34 pmMore proof, I suppose that the crackers are bananas. I used to wonder when the south would climb out of the 19th century. Now I wonder when they will crawl out of their 20th. And as long as these ape-like creatures continue to make headlines, the country is in danger ,” for damn sure”, as they say. In Georgia they also say, “Life’s hard and then you die”. If some of this breed would die off sooner, life wouldn’t be so hard.
September 9th, 2008 at 8:35 pmWe should start a pool to see which of us can guess the closest to when one of these morons will finally unleash the dreaded N-word.
September 9th, 2008 at 8:40 pmZooey, you can see it simmering in McStain already.
If they don’t get his meds right at the debates (assuming Obama actually cranks up his own volume and loses the nuanced bullshiite) it could be McStain’s magic moment.
But I think Palin’s “sambo” comment is as close as it’ll get.
PEACE
September 9th, 2008 at 8:42 pm“There’s simply no comparison between a governor and a community organizer.
This was referenced on Tweety on Monday. This sentence is another “dog whistle”.
Small town mayor, vs. community organizer. In small towns, most of the time these people hear of community organizing, they think Al Sharpton. Very negative connotation to small town white America. You and I might not get the “whistle”, but those that think that way hear it loud and clear!
September 9th, 2008 at 8:44 pmWTF is it with Georgians? Their shit, contrary to their opinions, does not, repeat not, smell like Peach Ice Cream.
September 9th, 2008 at 8:48 pmYup…we are one step away from the Republicans calling blacks Ni**ers.
What is happening to this country? And why isn’t the MSM calling them on this stuff. If a Democrat called Palin a sexist name or called McBush a “senile old fart” you can bet that the MSM would have a fit. But Republicans making racial slurs towards blacks…. ***crickets***
September 9th, 2008 at 8:48 pmHow about Palin’s ‘Sambo’ comment?
Does she prefer Tiger pancakes in the mornin, with some good ole Aunt Jemima syrup?
September 9th, 2008 at 8:48 pmHow about a law professor and a fivecollegeinsixyears BS in broadcasting?
September 9th, 2008 at 8:50 pmdbadass Says:
Obama is not a community organizer, he is a sitting senator of the United States of America.
And that’s how everyone should handle that slur. I have to say, though, that it surprises me they are still using that slam. Everyone, except maybe the 2%, has been in some kind of an organization be it the PTA, the Moose Lodge or a church charity. I wonder what people who belong to those community organizations think of Ms. Palin and her slurs. Do they do some mental gymnastics and somehow interpret that when Palin says “community organizer” she is only talking about black community organizations in Chicago.
I swear, this entire country has gone bat $hit insane.
September 9th, 2008 at 8:51 pmI just looked up the 8th congressional district in Georgia (the district Goddard is running in) and discovered that it kind of cuts a vertical swath through central GA, from Macon to Moultrie.
Does anybody know enough about Georgia to know what the constituency is like there? Are these people who are more likely to be impressed or appalled at Goddard’s obvious racism?
If appalled, look for an “I didn’t mean that as a racist term” from Goddard. I may scream if it comes down to that — if nobody is using this as a racist term, how come white people are never referred to in this manner?
September 9th, 2008 at 8:53 pmWhy do they do it? Because they can. Like I heard on the radio today on my way home. They tell a lie. They rarely are called on that lie and by the time a “correction” comes out, the lie has become conventional wisdom. Most people won’t even see the correction.
Until such time as the MSM starts to immediately call them on their lies and their racism, there will be a bonus in their continuing to speak like this. With no consequences, why not.
September 9th, 2008 at 8:54 pmOn any resume, there’s a whole section on education.
September 9th, 2008 at 8:55 pmThe Dems should start matching up Obama (Harvard Law Review, professor, ok lecturer in Constitutional Law) and McIIIrd (5th from the bottom of 899 Annapolis Midshipmen) and Biden JD from Syracuse and Palin MS in broadcasting…

September 9th, 2008 at 8:18 pm
Obama is not a community organizer, he is a sitting senator of the United States of America.
______________________________________________________
I think that just to be fair, we should compare Obama’s job as a community organizer to every candidate’s and every politician’s first job (or any job held within three years of graduation).
John McCain was a Naval officer.
George W. Bush went into the Texas Air National Guard.
Sarah Palin worked as a television sports reporter.
Hillary Clinton attended law school upon graduation, and then embarked on a law career.
Joe Biden also attended law school upon graduation, and then practiced law until he ran for office.
Dick Cheney stayed in school as long as he could to avoid the draft, then went to work as an intern for the Nixon administration.
Obama did a great job as a community organizer, with a stellar record. Then he went to law school, and then practiced law until he ran for office (sound familiar?).
I suggest that whenever Palin sneers at Obama’s work as a community organizer, someone needs to point out her past as a sports reporter — also said with a sneer. Does sports reporting qualify someone for office?
September 9th, 2008 at 9:08 pmRUC,
Palin only gets credit for a BS in Journalism, not an MS. ;)
September 9th, 2008 at 9:12 pmNotice he is from Georgia. Just like the other cracker…oops white guy he’s got nothing to lose by being racist. I don’t mean any disrespect to you good people from Georgia but it sure seems to me from my experiences on these here Internets that that state provides more dumbasses, dipshits and rooster-suckers than any other state.
September 9th, 2008 at 9:12 pmThey’re not even trying to hide it anymore, are they?
You can see just how liberated the extreme Right feels now that they’ve got their Sarah. As far as they’re concerned, it’s Back to the Future — assuming your vision of the future is lilly white and filled with quiet, unassuming Belles who graciously submit to their men-folk.
September 9th, 2008 at 9:25 pm“Senator Obama received 70% of the vote to Keyes’s 27%, the largest victory margin for a statewide race in Illinois history.”
And there’s a few more people in Illinois than there are in Alaska. Heck there’s more people in the congressional district he represented than there are in Alaska.
September 9th, 2008 at 9:29 pmOh, and it’s just a coincidence that these Georgia crackers keep calling African Americans uppity, sure it is.
September 9th, 2008 at 9:32 pmDon’t forget that he is the DISGRACED FORMER REPUBLICAN Speaker Newt Gingrich.
September 9th, 2008 at 9:36 pmthe general has his

they had two weeks ago.
that was a klan rally.

good luck.

September 9th, 2008 at 9:38 pmPerhaps they will burn a cross on the Georgia Capital’s lawn on election day? Just as a reminder of “Southern Pride” of course.
September 9th, 2008 at 9:54 pmThere’s simply no comparison between a governor and a community organizer.
Martin Luther King Jr. was a community organizer. I’ll match his accomplishments to Alaska’s Governor any day.
http://progressiveworldreview.com
September 9th, 2008 at 10:05 pmWouldn’t it be a much better world if we all practiced love thy neighbor, promoted peace, or gave help to those in need? Oh wait, those are the thoughts of that liberal community organizer named Jesus! But, but, isn’t Jesus the hero of the right? Can’t be! I guess the right are just a bunch of lying scumbag hypocrites. I wonder if they ever read that Bible they thump?
September 9th, 2008 at 10:11 pmBut this is what Georgie’s policies have got us. The racists feel they can come out of their closets and run amok as long as they have some tenuous claim to Christianity. Sounds familiar if you know history – the KKK claimed to be God centered.
September 9th, 2008 at 10:14 pmhttp://bravenewfilms.org/ Take this and send it to everyone you know…go to the ” 5 Things Everyone Should Know About John McCain”…I may post this on other stories on Think Progress so I catch everyone:) Thanks.
September 9th, 2008 at 10:22 pmOh, but you have to understand, they didn’t KNOW it was a racist statement. Nevermind that they have lived in GA for many years and that the term uppity for many, many years preceded only one word. They must have missed that.
September 9th, 2008 at 10:44 pmGosh… it’s kinda nice to see blatant, in your face racism back in style.
Goddard would look so… so… at home, in a white, pointed hood w/ eyeholes, huh?
September 9th, 2008 at 10:47 pmWhat it is with Repukes ?What has black people done to these people to be treated in such a disrespectful manner. And i bet he considers himself a christian.

September 9th, 2008 at 10:56 pmChrist, he’s a Senator now. How hard is that to get through their heads?
Back when Obama was organizing communities, Palin wasn’t anything of note. Why go back that far in time to come up with such petty ways to insult people?

September 9th, 2008 at 10:57 pmI always knew this would happen. With Obama just a few votes away from running the greatest, most powerful and yes even with all it’s issues, the greatest country in the world, it was only a matter of time before these idiots became apoleptic and revealed themselves.
September 9th, 2008 at 11:02 pmNow that they are doing it, it is up to the country to make sure they aren’t in positions of power.
I suppose I understand why the call it the “Goober State” now
September 9th, 2008 at 11:13 pmI’m used to “Blanket A$$” or “one of those drunken indians” but being an native american atheist, I can forgive ignorance for what it is… and I am sure that black americans go thru way more crap than I have…America the Brave?
Not so much.
September 9th, 2008 at 11:24 pmNewt didn’t disarm the reporter, he bit off his head and swallowed it whole.
I guess Ron got uppity when he resisted Gingrich’s ramming that nightstick.
To see a fiction, one must defend it with force, if necessary.
September 9th, 2008 at 11:31 pmThat was supposed to be:

September 9th, 2008 at 11:32 pmAll of our DNA is traced back to Africa. We all came from there.
September 9th, 2008 at 11:33 pmOy. Are we to expect more of this? Probably so, as long as ignorance, racism, and religious intolerance are considered virtues by a substantial section of the population. I just hope that section is less than 50% of the actively voting population on Nov. 4.
September 9th, 2008 at 11:43 pmCletis the slackjawed yokel calls an elevator an uppity-box. Maybe that’s what the fine gentlemen from Georgia meant.
September 9th, 2008 at 11:45 pmNo googling Cal Malenky! Can you name all Cletis’s spawn?
September 9th, 2008 at 11:49 pmThe racism is really bubbling to the surface.
September 10th, 2008 at 12:10 amI feel bad. I never knew ‘uppity’ was a racial epithet. I still can’t believe it and I can’t believe all the commentators here knew this either. So I looked it up on dictionary.com. I don’t think this could be considered racism. Granted, it said “originally used by blacks of other blacks felt to be too self-assertive “, but all that says is the origin as the meaning has stayed the same – i.e. affecting an attitude of inflated self-esteem; haughty; snobbish.
Moreover, the real origin of the term was the British ‘uppish’ first recorded in 1734.
definition
September 10th, 2008 at 12:10 amOk so I guess I’m wrong – I guess it’s widely known that this is meant to be racist… I had no idea as I’ve used it a lot and never at a black person that I can recall anyway. It seems you can be racist without even knowing it – yikes

September 10th, 2008 at 12:25 amIn the interest of full disclosure, I will admit that I am so numb that I was a grownup before I realized that to gyp someone was a ethnic slur. I was embarassed when I figured it out
When Mcpalin is calling Obama an elite they are actually calling him “uppity”.They are trying to scare people into thinking Obama is going get the African American population and other minorities to vote, which he is.To bad our so called Liberal MSM(laughing like hell)won`t carry this or Westmoreland`s comment either.
September 10th, 2008 at 12:26 amTough questions scare you Ricky?

Kind of an irrelevant comment on your part, because he didn’t. It would still be an insult, IF he had.
“up·pi·ty (p-t)
adj. Informal
Taking liberties or assuming airs beyond one’s station; presumptuous…”
Hardly a compliment, and it is next-to-impossible, ESPECIALLY for a man of Goddard’s age, from Georgia, to NOT know the word has a nasty racial past.
Next meaningless question.
September 10th, 2008 at 3:02 amBilbo Hussein Baggins Says:
If a Democrat called Palin a sexist name…
Well, Shi’ite, Bilbo… if I’m not mistaken, the GOOPers have been screaming “SEXIST!!! SEXIST!!! SEXIST!!!” is someone simply dares to ask, What are Palin’s credentials for the job?”
September 10th, 2008 at 3:04 amReligiously Right is not politically correct
September 10th, 2008 at 4:47 amAn essential lack in racists belief is the lack of courage. The likes of Goddard and Westmoreland can barely snap their mouths shut lest the true nature of their cowardice spill.

Running on ethics violations, racism and control of the media.
September 10th, 2008 at 9:01 amThe GOP’s tank is almost empty.
Unfortunately, purge a couple hundred thousand voters off the rolls, flip a few votes in Ohio and you’ve got a combination that could win the election.
Im glad the republicans are using this language. Hell I wish they’d go further. Their racist LIVs already KNOW Obama is black, they don’t need a reminder.
Our LIV black voters need to be pissed. So pissed that they register to vote for the first time in their lives and stick it to the Red Team.
I know Im being shamelessly political, but our country cannot withstand another 8 years of this.
September 10th, 2008 at 9:17 amIt’s on isn’t it. I said all along that Barak Obama’s candidacy would finally force the covert racist Republicans to show their hand.

Nice idea. Maybe they’ll replace some of the black voters who’ve been caged out of their voting rights.
September 10th, 2008 at 9:44 amI heard a great statement today, something like… My grandfather would not have voted for a black man, my father probably not, but my kids would not take a person’s color as a reason to or not to vote. This election is about the future, not the past, vote for your kids.
And it’s true, racism is slowly dying out in this country, or at least is on a decline and this meme captures that thought.
I personally hope the racist bastards die off sooner than later. As well as the sexist and homophobes and religious fanatics. Of course, these are all different facets of the same person. The sooner they all rot the better.
September 10th, 2008 at 9:59 am“Uppity” is simply a code word for n*****r. We ALL know that. The GOoPers know exactly what they’re doing using it.
We need to call them on it each and every time – loudly. I suggest we contact the campaign office of Mr. Goddard – and the office of any other Repuke who uses this word (or any other racist term).
