In an interview on the Today Show this morning, host Meredith Vieira asked Meghan McCain about Sen. Barack Obama’s (D-IL) comments that Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) “doesn’t get it.” Meghan responded by pointing to her dad’s service in Vietnam and her two brothers who are currently enlisted. She then went a step further, however, saying that her family is the only family that understands war:
Oy!! She’s gonna get blasted.
September 9th, 2008 at 1:13 pmI mean what, it’s only been her father and her brothers to ever fight in a war?
September 9th, 2008 at 1:14 pmTake that, Meredith – - P.O.W.!!!
September 9th, 2008 at 1:14 pmTime to military families to protest on her front lawn!

September 9th, 2008 at 1:20 pmTrack is a hero b/c he was born on 9/11.
September 9th, 2008 at 1:20 pmNow, now, people. It’s not fair to criticize family members just for what they actually said or what they’ve actually done.
Unless they’re Democrats. then, all bets are off.
September 9th, 2008 at 1:21 pmJohn McCain is a famous war hero?? What is so heroic about bombing civilians, losing five planes or being captured by the enemy and turning into a singing yellow canary?
September 9th, 2008 at 1:21 pmA bit off topic, but what is up w/ Palin’s shameless exploitation of her son’s service? She’s speaking at his deployment I think this Thursday (another chance to exploit the tragedy of 9/11 for partisan gains! How honorable!) I’ve never seen any politician use their child’s service as such a political prop…not McCain, not Joe Biden, not other Members of Congress with children serving.
September 9th, 2008 at 1:23 pmShh. Be very, very quiet and you can hear the mini-violins playing that sorrowful song.
No one knows how insulting the blond jokes are, do they?
September 9th, 2008 at 1:23 pmShe is totally wrong to say that no one knows what war is like other than her family. Apparently she forgot that thousands of families have lost their loves one in this war and hundreds of thousands of other families have people in this war. This is the kind of thinking that Republicans use to justify their actions.
If only her family knows about the horrors of war then that makes it ok for them to continue the war. She will be singing a different tune if one of her brothers dies in Iraq. Believe me when you realize that you will never see that person again and they died for some foreign country that doesn’t give a damn about America, it makes a difference.
Apparent Meghan doesn’t understand that the people we are fighting are Iraqis and they hate America. So that means in the end when it’s said and done they will still hate us. You can’t change people’s minds at the point of a gun. Either they identify with us or not and these people are Arabs who generally don’t like America. All of the wishful thinking on the planet isn’t going to change that. I served 11 years in the United States Army and I served in Asia and Europe and I know what people in other countries say about us. They call us the ugly/stupid Americans. Why because we think that they should be like us, when they are what they are.
What else could you expect from a dumb blonde?
September 9th, 2008 at 1:23 pmI bet the families of all the dead and wounded – US, “coalition”, Iraqi – all have a pretty good idea of what war is all about, especially the current one her big, bad daddy wants to keep fighting.
Heck, I’ve got a pretty good idea of that the GOP knows something about war as well – least as far as it can be used as a bumper sticker slogan to win elections.
September 9th, 2008 at 1:24 pmTell it to the Tillmans.

September 9th, 2008 at 1:24 pmi guess she’s never heard of cindy sheehan.
September 9th, 2008 at 1:25 pmYou were expecting MORE of LESS from a McCain?
September 9th, 2008 at 1:26 pmNewsflash for you, Bimbo McSame — my dad was in VietNam for 2 tours during my adolescent years. I can assure you that my family knows something about wars too — as do the thousands upon thousands of other families who have vets in their families who served in VietNam, Grenada, Panama, Gulf I or II, or any other military incursion for that matter…
Damn — why does the entire McCain family have to play victim and “more patriotic than thou” all the time?
September 9th, 2008 at 1:26 pm.
Because everyone knows that real patriots never criticize the family values of the Party of “Family Values”… YES?

September 9th, 2008 at 1:28 pmAnyone looking for an elitist, someone who thinks they’re somehow above the rest?
September 9th, 2008 at 1:28 pmWhat absolute BS! He was a fighter pilot and the only time he spent on the ground in Nam was after being shot down. Yes, he suffered, but making a statement like that invites serious ridicule. I’ll bet even daddy reigns her in.
September 9th, 2008 at 1:28 pmDid she mention that her daddy spent five-and-a-half years as a POW?
Thought so.
September 9th, 2008 at 1:29 pmso, according to this bimbo, “getting it” means taking extremely aggressive, pre-emptive, and illegal military action against countries which have never threatened the united states?
September 9th, 2008 at 1:29 pmThis is an outrage. McCain was not the only person who served in Vietnam. McCain’s sons aren’t the only people serving in Iraq.
Far too many families have been affected by the negative consequences of the wars in Korea, Vietnam and Iraq. Far too many good Americans were sent to these countries to die – not in defense of the United States but as part of the Cold War chess game that elite players like Sen. McCain have played for decades.
Ms. McCain’s comments denigrate the service of every veteran of Vietnam and of those who have served and still serve in Iraq and Afghanistan. Every day, hundreds of thousands of Americans live with the pain that these wars have brought to our shores. They mourn their brothers, husbands, fathers and the many noble Americans who have lost their lives in the pursuit of these wars. Consider all of those in my own generation whose fathers served in Vietnam. To this very day my father still deals with the mental and physical injuries he received there. Sadly, he is not alone.
September 9th, 2008 at 1:30 pm.
But have the McCain’s given up golf?

September 9th, 2008 at 1:30 pmAnd then there’s this youtube video that really shows what war’s all about.

Why don’t you get Meghan and move to Iraq since you two like it so much. I’m not stupid enough to give all of our hard earned money to a country of people who don’t like us. And besides they are oil rich STUPID! They are sitting on hundreds of trillions of dollars of oil and we are spending trillions trying to keep them safe. Now even an idiot like you should be able to understand that. No, actually you are to stupid to understand anything except a Republican talking point.

September 9th, 2008 at 1:32 pmKeep talking, Meghan…
As a Vietnam-era US Army veteran, with five years of active duty and ten years of active reserve component duty, I believe that I know a little something about ‘war.’ My experiences pale, however by comparison, to the tens of thousands of survivors who have actually lost sons, daughters, brothers, sisters, fathers, mothers and friends in this senseless conflict, and in the many other military adventures this nation has embarked upon.
Way to ’support the troops,’ Meghan. Your daddy must be real proud of you. What a bimbo…

So what if she “…said “other” when she meant to say “better?” So the hell what? It’s STILL completely over the top, blatantly false and totally inappropriate, even with your presumptive word swap.
And, frankly, she’s still a spoiled child, with a breathtaking sense of entitlement and little or no sense of real sacrifice. The perfect little Republican woman.
So there. And, it does not at all constitute ‘…petty, distracting nonsense.’ Meghan McCain is a longtime spokesperson and blogger for her fathers campaign, and the face of its effort to energize younger voters.
She spoke up inappropriately, and should roundly be chastised for doing so. It’s not a matter of partisanship at all, it’s a matter of decency and seriously calls into question her judgement and fitness as a campaign spokesperson. From my point of view, it clearly demonstrates her real feelings, and her utter lack of sensitivity toward veterans and survivors. And, by extension and as a measure of the actions of others around her, the campaigns.
Here’s hoping the don’t tamp her down, and this spoiled, out of touch young woman just keeps spouting for on behalf of her dad!

September 9th, 2008 at 2:46 pmThis falls under the heading of slip of the tongue. You can try to exploit it if you, want, but reasonable people will understand that she’s not a politician or professional pundit. She probably understand that other families understand war. It’s probably more likely that she believes her father and family have had more experience than anyone else in the campaign. That’s hard to refute. Both his grandfather and father served in WWII and McCain himself served in Vietnam.
You can debate the relevance of that experience, but to promote the idea that McCain’s daughter believes that her family is the only one that has experience (despite the gaffe) with war, and that by extention, McCain believes the same thing, is disingenuous.
September 9th, 2008 at 2:46 pmWow, this is really sad. The families of candidates should be off-limits – but what do we about a family member who steps up with a comment that’s not only idiotic, it’s insulting to the thousands of families dealing with recent loss? She misspoke, of course. She meant to say no one knows MORE about war than her family. But maybe Sen. McCain should rein her in. She’s become a target.

Plain and simple ; she’s a fu(king dipshit…………
September 9th, 2008 at 2:53 pm@ 81…
Nice try. The actions of her father with regard to veterans issues and the conduct of this misadventure in Iraq speak volumes of his relative disregard for them, and for their concerns.
His miserable ratings from major veteran’s organizations, who have traditionally supported Republicans over Democrats by a wide margin, and their squeamish acknowledgments of his obvious shortcomings—including his dance in opposition to the recently passed GI Bill, which he then attempted to disingenuously take credit for—speaks volumes about the ‘real McCain’ with regards to these issues.
Yeah, so nice try.

spoko @ 66 Even if she meant to say “better” instead of “other”, it doesn’t make her statement any less offensive. Her father came home. I don’t think her family knows war any “better” than the family of (for example) Pat Tillman or Cindy Sheehan. She’s an elitist airhead who dares to presume that her sensibilities, and those of her family, are somehow finer and more sensitive than those of the rest of us. However she meant it, it reeks of the attitudes of the priviledged, and it falls in the same category as Barbara Bush’s comments post Katrina.

I can’t speak for Meghan, but I know many people her age, and they do tend to go for the dramatic and talk in absolutes. So chances are pretty good that she didn’t literally mean what she said.
However, when Obama had his brain fart about the 57 states (which really WAS a misspeak, not an attempt to exaggerate or be dramatic), he didn’t insult or belittle anybody.
Meghan owes every veteran and every veteran’s family an apology over this one, whether she meant to say what she did or not.

McCain’s daughter knows that other families have experience with war, she also misspoke.
I think you misspeak when you claim to speak for someone you have never spoken to.
You don’t know Megan McCain from Eve. Don’t pretend to know what she was thinking.
September 9th, 2008 at 4:08 pmI wonder if an alumna of Columbia would be able to hide behind “I’m young and stupid” as an excuse?
This statement will warrant either an increase or a reduction in her allowance. All depends on whether the MSM takes it up.
September 9th, 2008 at 4:11 pm“Meghan McCain: ‘No one knows what war is like other than my family. Period.’”
September 9th, 2008 at 4:12 pmPerhaps two million iraqui civilians who have lost their lives would also know what War is like. Perhaps, the other two million iraqui civilians who were displaced by the illegal and imoral invasion and lost their love ones would also know what war is like. Ask the Vietnamese, they also would know what the a war is like. Or ask the people of Panana or Nicaragua, they know what war with a terrorist state is like!
Okay. She’s a young adult (25?) and she thinks that no one outside her family has any experience with war. It’s possible she’s spent her whole life without the knowledge that other families have members involved in various wars (millions in WWII, hundreds of thousands in Vietnam, the Gulf War and the war in Iraq, etc).
Or it’s possible, like Obama saying that he’s been to 57 states, that she also made a slip of the tongue.
BTW, I don’t know Obama either.

Members of my family have occasional quarrels too, but it sounds like the McCains have some serious issues.

You don’t know jack.
September 9th, 2008 at 4:54 pmIf McSenile and his family are the only ones who know about war, can the rest of the troops come home? They don’t know nuthin anyway!
September 9th, 2008 at 4:58 pmWhat a self-absorbed useless poor little rich girl. So spoiled she will never do anything productive. I see a future of whining over her divorces and addiction problems.
September 9th, 2008 at 5:52 pmTillman family and all the rest, please accept our apologies for this stupid kid’s moronic statements
September 9th, 2008 at 6:24 pm‘No one knows what war is like other than my family. Period.”
Well, well. Not much room for discussion, sounds just like her father, Bush, Cheney, Rumsfeld… almost forgot – the world is 3,000 years old, even though I love fossil fuel Palin.
and Meagan, the families of soldiers who died in this war and the vets who served- they know – PERIOD. Are you really that selfish. WHAT KIND OF FAMILY VALUES DID YOUR PARENTS TEACH YOU!
September 9th, 2008 at 9:00 pmThere were a few of us on the ground in Vietnam who know what war is about and there were 58,000 families who know what a sh$tty business war is from that war. I am sure there are 4,000 families from the Iraq mistake who understand what war is. I question whether this little girl really understands what a screwed up business war is. He father did his duty and so did the rest of us. It does not qualify him for anything but a medal for good conduct.
September 9th, 2008 at 10:05 pmI’m sure FoxNews has a position in waiting. She would make a great replacement for Liz Hasselback on The View.

September 10th, 2008 at 1:34 amQuite a few thousand families would beg to differ with you on that Megs. Your father wasn’t the only one in that prison camp, you remember that!
