Palin repeats Bridge to Nowhere lie.

By Amanda Terkel on Sep 9th, 2008 at 11:22 am

Palin repeats Bridge to Nowhere lie.

Today at a rally with Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) in Ohio, Gov. Sarah Palin (R-AK) once again repeated the lie that she opposed the infamous Bridge to Nowhere in Alaska:

You’re going to hear a lot about the abusive practice of earmarks in Congress from our good senator here. We championed, in Alaska, the reform of the old earmark process. I told Congress, “Thanks, but no thanks for that Bridge to Nowhere up in Alaska.” If our state wanted a bridge, we were going to build it ourselves.

Watch it:

ThinkProgress has been keeping track of how many times the McCain campaign is repeating this lie. Palin’s comments today bring the number to 23 times:

liesnowhere23.jpg

Update The Wall Street Journal notes today that in August 2006, Palin said, "We need to come to the defense of Southeast Alaska when proposals are on the table like the bridge and not allow the spinmeisters to turn this project or any other into something that's so negative."

Do you think that Bush’s policies have been a success? McCain promises a continuation of the Bush policies. You treat it as though it’s a game. This is the future of our Country, idiot. McCain and Palin ARE Washington politics as usual. They are part of the problem, not the solution. She is becomming a national joke despite the GOP’s attempts at hiding her from the press.

Thanks to Dogfather for the tip about the WSJ story.

    Here’s how it opens:

Despite significant evidence to the contrary, the McCain campaign continues to assert that Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin told the federal government “thanks but no thanks” to the now-famous bridge to an island in her home state.

    and more:

But Gov. Palin’s claim comes with a serious caveat. She endorsed the multimillion dollar project during her gubernatorial race in 2006. And while she did take part in stopping the project after it became a national scandal, she did not return the federal money. She just allocated it elsewhere.

    Rupert must be plenty pissed.

I mean, it sounds like you are positively gleeful at the prospect of McCain and Palin “bulldozing” their way to victory. Is this joy of yours due to your somewhat bizarre need to “win”, or do you genuinely believe the country would be better off?

Also, CNN is report that “The McCain campaign says the governor doesn’t consider herself Pentecostal.” and further

“McGraw says Palin’s Pentecostal roots may be being downplayed for a reason: “I think there may be issues of belief that could be misunderstood or played upon by people that don’t know.”

For instance, the Alaska/Russia proximity argument. That can’t possibly be considered legitimate, right? So, when they use it it seems to be a Red Flag – ‘look how ridiculous this pick is and how much more ridiculous our argument for defending it is’

“The governor also has charged the state for travel expenses to take her children on official out-of-town missions,” the paper added. “And her husband, Todd, has billed the state for expenses and a daily allowance for trips he makes on official business for his wife.”
