Debate audience laughs at Sen. Pat Roberts’ statements about pre-war intelligence.

In a campaign debate between Sen. Pat Roberts (R-KS) and challenger Jim Slattery yesterday, a “contentious topic” concerned the intelligence used to justify the invasion of Iraq. Audience members laughed when Roberts, former chairman of the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence, tried to justify U.S. public officials’ mistakes on the war by saying that the entire world got the intelligence on Iraq wrong:

Slattery criticized Roberts for getting the intelligence wrong while serving as chairman of the Senate Intelligence Committee. He said voters should hold politicians accountable when they make such mistakes.

Roberts countered that the world, not just the U.S., got the intelligence wrong — and once that was realized it was his committee that made the information public. Several audience members laughed at Roberts’ statement. Unfazed, Roberts continued: “Jim, you wouldn’t even know about this information except for the fact I released it.”

More on the intelligence agencies who got it right here.

Just out of curiosity, what are Slattery’s chances against this clown?

They should have tarred and feathered the lying a$$ and put him upon the proverbial rail–only used like a skewer on a barbequed pig.

4000 Americans and millions of others dead because “the whole world had it wrong” is no laughing matter. They all belong in Leavenworth.

LOL, still drinking the kool-aid, you lying fascist neo-con Sen. Pat Roberts (R-KS)!

Let’s see what Drumheller, the CIA’s top man in Europe, the head of covert operations has to say….

“(CBS) When no weapons of mass destruction surfaced in Iraq, President Bush insisted that all those WMD claims before the war were the result of faulty intelligence. But a former top CIA official, Tyler Drumheller — a 26-year veteran of the agency — has decided to do something CIA officials at his level almost never do: Speak out.

He tells correspondent Ed Bradley the real failure was not in the intelligence community but in the White House. He says he saw how the Bush administration, time and again, welcomed intelligence that fit the president’s determination to go to war and turned a blind eye to intelligence that did not.

“It just sticks in my craw every time I hear them say it’s an intelligence failure. It’s an intelligence failure. This was a policy failure,” Drumheller tells Bradley.

Drumheller was the CIA’s top man in Europe, the head of covert operations there, until he retired a year ago. He says he saw firsthand how the White House promoted intelligence it liked and ignored intelligence it didn’t:

“The idea of going after Iraq was U.S. policy. It was going to happen one way or the other,” says Drumheller. ”

  4. Erroll says:

The millions who marched against the war around the world in late 2002 and 2003 certainly were aware that the invasion of Iraq was illegal and immoral. If only Barack Obaama would realize that sending more American troops into Afghanistan, where they can contribute to the continued slaughter of innocent Afghans, is also illegal and immoral.

They’re still hoping if they repeat the lie often enough people will believe them.

Right. It was his committee that stonewalled everything that even hinted at making information public. Glad to see people are finally laughing at his bullshit.

How about this bit of info I’m releasing , Pat Buttplug …….?

There are currently 193 countries on the planet ; on the eve of the invasion, the White House count of those countries numbered 49, though a review of public statements made by their governments themselves finds only 39 members in this group.

So , anywhere between 140 to 150 or so countries in the “world” , were not part of this so-called “mistake” ; how do you explain that away , Patty cake ?

Am I wrong, or is the same Pat Roberts that promised a continuation of some sort of investigation — a phase 2 investigation, so to speak, of the faults of 9/11? Or was that the lead up to the Invasion of Iraq?

And then delayed, and delayed, and delayed past the 2004 election.

    Is this the guy?

  19. Bilbo Hussein Baggins says:

Here’s how timely Roberts released the data. I guess it took him two years to “realize” they got the intelligence wrong.

The truth is, Roberts stonewalled requests to release Phase II.

Almost two years after finishing of Phase I investigation, on April 5, 2006, Senator Roberts released the Committee’s schedule for completion of Phase II [4]. Senator Roberts said, “Today members of the Committee were provided three draft reports of the Phase II inquiry including: postwar findings about Iraq’s weapons of mass destruction programs and links to terrorism and how they compare with prewar assessments, the use by the Intelligence Community of information provided by the Iraqi National Congress (INC), and prewar intelligence assessments about postwar Iraq.

The truth? In Feb. 2003, British intelligence said Saddam had no ties to al-Qaeda. The BBC reported: “There are no current links between the Iraqi regime and the al-Qaeda network, according to an official British intelligence report seen by BBC News.”

“In the past our politicians offered us dreams of a better world. Now they promise to protect us from nightmares. The most frightening of these is the threat of an international terror network. But just as the dreams were not true, neither are these nightmares… At the heart of the story are two groups: the American neo-conservatives and the radical Islamists…”

    ####

    Mr. Speaker:

For the last two years I’ve struggled with the issue of whether the House should impeach a sitting President. Next to declaring war, impeachment is the gravest matter the House of Representatives must consider. I fully understand the gut-wrenching consequences such a national debate could precipitate. Yet, there is one fact we cannot overlook or escape: American cannot regain its moral leadership in the world if America cannot hold its leaders accountable for their actions at home.

The allegations that would warrant impeachment keep growing. They have been illuminated in recent books including The Way of the World by Ron Suskind, the book by Vincent Bugliosi, and the new book by Bob Woodward, The War Within.

Over five years ago, I tried to place asterisks in the Congressional Record next to the statements about Iraq the President made to Congress. I was attacked for saying the President would mislead us into the war, but the American people ultimately learned the truth.

There seems to be no end to the allegations and we have a responsibility to investigate their authenticity. That’s why I’m signing onto a resolution to consider impeachment of the President. Without accountability, a democracy will fail. I yield back.

    ####
    (emphasis mine)

Why won’t TP press the issue of impeachment?

As flex points out nicely in #3,
Using Intelligence is akin to performing science. Use the facs that fit your theory, and if the most facts fit then the theory is most likely true.
And, THAT is why the whole IRAQ thing failed. They pieced together convenient facts to fit this most heinous theory, and expected the rest of the FACTS to continue to fit into this meme. And of course the facts did not.
It all goes with the administration having no clue about science. They cannot even fathom how science is supposed to work, that is why they continue to piece together the few “facts” about global warming that persist, against the overwhelming tidal wave of other facts. They WANT, with all their little mite, to have the information go their way.
    Facts will always bury you.
