Woodward: Bin Laden capture could be ‘the September or the October surprise.’

In his new book “The War Within,” Washington Post reporter Bob Woodward disclosed “the existence of secret operational capabilities developed by the military to locate, target and kill leaders of al Qaeda in Iraq and other insurgent leaders.” Asked by a caller on Larry King Live last night if the capabilities could be used “to catch bin Laden,” Woodward replied that “maybe they can use it on bin Laden.” He then mused that it’s possible that “the September or the October surprise is going to be the apprehension or the death of bin Laden.” Watch it:

And John McSame will, no doubt, try to take credit for it.

  2. WaltB says:

Wouldn’t be surprised, but that’s giving the overworked folks in Afghanistan a lot more capability than they have on the ground or in the air. Georgie would have had to send over a lot of special ops folks last month to make this happen.

  3. upside99 says:

I wonder if his body has been in some refrigerated morgue for the past year or so and now will be brought out to try and impact the elections?

NAWWWWW, the Repugs would never do such a thing, would they?

    Would they?

  4. Wayne A. Schneider says:

They’re going to announce that they’ve captured his dead body?

  5. RUCerious says:

Perhaps a weekend at Binnie’s episode is in the works?

Actually, I captured Bin Laden in my back yard a week ago, munching my blackberries.
Although it was just a hungry mole, we nicknamed him Bin Laden because he was so elusive…

  8. tokin librul says:

    Capture bin Laden? Kewl…

Except for the fact that, just before she was assassinated, Benazir Bhutto claimed she had met the man who had assassinated Osama, in ToraBora, in 2002…

I’ve been saying that for years, but when Woodward says it’s a pearl of wisdom.

    – - Could. That’s some sturdy limb you’re out on there, Bob.

On her way out of the White House, Fran Townsend noted capturing Bin Laden was high on George W.’s to do list as he wraps up his failed Presidency.

That and addressing Iran’s nuclear program. It should be a wild few months as George works to stack the election in McCon’s favor and spreads violence throughout the Middle East.

  12. progressive homeschooler says:

Didn’t we hear of this same possibility back in 2004? Not sure who said it then, but I do remember hearing it.

  13. beltman713 says:

Seems like every time there is an election around the corner, someone always brings out the, capture Bin Laden-october suprise bit. Ain’t gonna happen.

  14. margerine says:

I’m tired of them dangling this around like a carrot.

  15. stormkrow says:

Funny since he’s been dead for 2 maybe 3 years now.

I do know that the barrel cost of gasoline, the timing of, is becoming suspicious. One would think that with speculation occurring at the drop of a pin, prices would be heading higher due to increasing hurricane activity.

  17. dbadass says:

“I truly am not that concerned about him.”

  18. Mr. Evil says:

OK, lets say, just for shits and giggles, that they “capture” bin Laden this month or next. Doesn’t it strike anyone that that would be the coincidence of the century? To conveniently apprehend him right before this election would that they knew where he was and had him cornered or that he’s already been captured and is being held until the right moment to trot him out. The spin will run rampant and the gullible, scared to death American citizens will swallow it hook, line, and sinker.

  19. katy says:

does that mean that mcWAR will divulge his secret?
he’s said that he knows how to get binladen… good that he decided he shouldn’t wait until january…

  20. zuch says:

I guess it got kind of stale with the killing of the 52nd “Number 2″ or “Number 3″ man in al Qaeda. But just to be sure, shouldn’t they kill the “Number 1″, bin Laden a couple times just to be sure? Oh…. right…. They have already killed him a couple times…

    Cheers,

tell you what, here’s a real goddurn headline-making october surprise:

“george bush captured by osama bin laden; no one demands his release”

  22. trollsbwild says:

Haven’t we been held hostage long enough? Why hasn’t OBL been killed or captured long ago?

Nice to know the Bush Administration would try to capture him as an election tactic.

Osama bin Laden passed away of natural causes in December, 2001, about six and a half years ago. See http://www.whatreallyhappened.com for details. Most of the videos and audio tapes released since then were Made in USA…

  24. Doc Rock says:

The question must be asked every day why Bin Laden wasn’t caught years ago? Was Al Qaeda too good a lever to use to pry up our civil liberties one by one to catch him early?

  25. samsuncle says:

The US military is sharing secret operational capabilities with a newspaper reporter? WTF!! If this is true isn’t it a breach of security?

If Bin Laden is killed or captured Obama should assert that he would have done it YEARS AGO!!!

  28. Chocolate Jesus says:

I call bullsh#te all this whole “magic killing technology thing” the pentagon is touting. it see it as a cover for a massive, multimillion dollar terrorist bribery campaign, and most likely some good, old fashioned, reagan era “central america” style human rights violating death squads.

im sure the pentagon has plenty of new toys thier playing around with, but to somehow chalk the relative (VERY relative)current stability in iraq up to anythign more than genuine old fashioned bribery and brutality is a mistake..

So, just like poachers the Bush administration would tie Bin Laden to a tree waiting for the right time to shoot him.

Poachers and Bush are equally hideous.

  31. Paul W says:

Bin Laden capture could be ‘the September or the October surprise.

That might have been effective a few years ago but today everyone’s more worried about making their paychecks meet, or even getting a paycheck, to care about bin-Laden.

  33. Sven Ortmann says:

One possible reason why Bin Ladin wasn’t snatched long ago is probably that nobody wants to make him a martyr.
And besides that, he’s rather irrelevant today, rather a symbolic figure than someone who’s really in charge of an organization.
AQ is no organization any more, it’s the brand of a movement.

  34. dbadass says:

sort of like Hitler, Jesus, and/or George Washington? Irrelevant and symbolic?

  35. Buckie Boy says:

Guys, this Mafia Government we have now, will just kill off any person who looks like him and say they got him.

It’s not like they have a proven record of being honest or anything.

    Duh!

  36. Cal Malenky says:

Then Johnnie the hero won’t be able to chase him to the gates of hell. Awww.

  37. Buckie Boy says:

Ok, small bit of personal info, I do special effects for movies and commercials for a living for 24 years, you can easily mock up a fake video of old OBL, too easy, little makeup here, little makeup there, some room some where and preso, you have OBL…no biggy, any amature with half a brain could do it.

  38. AmandaBlow says:

Yeah! Well by the time this capture of Bin Laden is done, I have lost my house and my job. Throw in outrageous gas prices and real $hitty economy getting worse and worse by the minute.

A delayed capture of Bin Laden taking place sometime before Nov. elections would be so obvious. It could also be staged.

It’ll take more than that to lure people to vote republican. GW has screwed up so royally these last 8yrs it’ll take way much more to clean up his mess.

  39. toshiaki says:

The Obama campaign needs to get ahead of this story *now*. For example, get the buzz out in the media on why the Bush Admin has waited until Sep/Oct 2008 to do this? Why have we wasted the last six years not chasing OBL like this? Also point back to Obama’s own, ridiculed position last year where he said he would chase OBL and AQ into Pakistan if that’s where they were.

Reacting to this after the fast will be impossible. Getting ahead of it is the only way to keep this from being a nightmare.

Every war when it comes, or before it comes, is represented not as a war but as an act of self-defense against a homicidal maniac.

War against a foreign country only happens when the moneyed classes think they are going to profit from it.

War is a way of shattering to pieces, or pouring into the stratosphere, or sinking in the depths of the sea, materials which might otherwise be used to make the masses too comfortable, and hence, in the long run, too intelligent.

    -GEORGE ORWELL

The whole aim of practical politics is to keep the populace alarmed (and hence clamorous to be led to safety) by menacing it with an endless series of hobgoblins, all of them imaginary.
