McCain Adviser Tells CNN: McCain Refuses To Talk About Bush’s Iraq Policy Because It’s ‘A Political Death Knell’

In recent weeks, the McCain campaign used its vice presidential pick of Sarah Palin to try to “seize the change mantle.” The Washington Post notes that McCain offers new rhetoric of change “with little explanation of what that change would be or how that change would take effect.”

CNN’s Dana Bash reported last night that for John McCain, “talking about change means not talking about George Bush.” She noted McCain neglected to make any mention yesterday of Bush’s major announcement to withdraw 8,000 troops from Iraq:

The most interesting thing, I think, on the campaign trail with McCain today is what we didn’t hear.

You know what happened at the White House? The president announced 8,000 troops are coming home from Iraq. That is something you’d think John McCain would be trumpeting from the rooftops as evidence that Iraq is actually succeeding, but he didn’t mention it at all.

Why? A McCain adviser I talked to tonight admitted that talking about anything related to Bush especially policy, especially Iraq policy, is basically a political death knell especially for John McCain right now. So he didn’t mention it at all.

Watch it:

Editorializing on Bush’s failure to offer an exit plan from Iraq, the New York Times notes that “Bush and his party’s nominee, John McCain, both want to stay the course until some undefined ‘victory’ is achieved.”

As the American public, the Iraqi public, and Iraqi political leaders have all consolidated behind the need for a fixed timetable for the drawdown of American troops in Iraq, the Bush administration appears to be grudgingly going along. “That leaves Mr. McCain as the stubborn man out,” writes the Times. In July, McCain rejected Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki’s desire for a timetable, claiming, “I know what they want.”

Digg It!

Wear the Mantle, McIIIrd. You’re 90% voting with BushitCo should get rammed right square up your gazoo…

  2. larkohio says:

I would not like to be associated with Bush either, but the truth is the truth, McSame has consistently voted with Bush.
I used to think he had some sort of integrity, his campaign of smears and lies has destroyed that.

  3. RUCerious says:

    Obama says:

John McCain says he’s about change too, and so I guess his whole angle is, ‘Watch out George Bush — except for economic policy, health care policy, tax policy, education policy, foreign policy and Karl Rove-style politics — we’re really going to shake things up in Washington,’” he said.

“That’s not change. That’s just calling something the same thing something different. You know you can put lipstick on a pig, but it’s still a pig. You know you can wrap an old fish in a piece of paper called change, it’s still going to stink after eight years. We’ve had enough of the same old thing.”

Subject = John McCain says he’s about change too

How in the hell do you get a personal reference to McPiggy, er McPalin out of this context?

You lie your republican ass off.

Karl Rove has plenty of experience with pigs wearing lipstick, just ask Dick.

  5. tom says:

Speaking of “death knells”, I have been wondering about something. Let’s say that McNumbNuts were to die before the general election. Do you think that the republicans would (1) select a replacement for the presidential nominee or (2)move Failin’ Palin to the top of the ticket and select a VP nominee?

    Forget the “political death knell”.

Bush’s Iraq policy meant actual death to thousands of soldiers and hundreds of thousands Iraqis.

    PEACE

  7. Rich says:

All the more reason to get away from the Palin sideshow and turn the focus back to McCain=Bush. Then throw Palin’s words right back at them. Four more years? “Thanks but no thanks”.

  8. tom says:

Failin’ Palin –> the “pigger” they are, the harder they fall

It is way past time to fact-check this pathological liar and then proceed to just plain ignore her. She is a flash-in-the-pan.

Amazing that this guy SAYS he knows how to win wars, how to capture Bin Laden, how to fix the economy but doesnt know what kind of car he drives or how many homes he has.

And NOW he wants people to think he doesnt KNOW the guy i the White House he is emulating.

I’ve seen live fish on hot concrete flip-flop less.

I guess that makes Obama the Professor.

But then Gilligan is married to Mrs. Howell. Creepy.

You lie your republican ass off.

You got it, RUC — and that’s clearly the strategy of the McSame campaign right now, to keep spinning out lie after lie and present it as “information”. And by the time the “info” is proven untrue, it doesn’t matter anymore; the brain-dead public have already accepted it as fact, and McSame and Miss Piggie have moved on to the next lie…

  15. raynman says:

The irony of McCain’s ‘expertise’ in running the country is that his experience in Viet Nam would be precisely the same. America will be going down in flames under his leadership.

  16. tom says:

The difference in how FoxSnooze and CNN are covering Obama today. FoxSnooze airs three minutes of his comments about the phony outrage over the “lipstick on a pig” baloney; then they cut to a bunch of their idiot talking heads about whether he put the issue to rest (of course, by doing so, they are keeping the matter alive so their fair-haired boy McNumbNuts doesn’t have to talk about issues).

CNN, on the other hand, is still airing Obama’s comments as he is presenting his policies and plans.

I am left to conclude that FoxSnooze is the primary culprit in the media that is aiding and abetting the whiny, dishonest, intellectually-bankrupt McNumbNuts campaign.

Virtually every American atheist blogger I know has been writing about Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, McSame’s VP selection. Heck, a Christian blogger even compiled many atheist reactions to Palin! Initially, it appeared that she was grossly unqualified for the job and that her selection was insulting to women. As more details emerged about Palin, it became clear that she was far worse than unqualified. If you are an atheist, agnostic, secular humanist, freethinker, or other member of the reality-based community eligible to vote in the U.S. election, you owe it to yourself and your country to vote against the McSame/Palin ticket. Even if you like McSame for some inexplicable reason, he age and health make Palin’s proximity to the presidency an unacceptable risk.

Other than voting against her, what else can you do? First, if Sarah Palin does not speak for you, join me in signing this letter from People for the American Way saying so. Next, keep blogging about her and what she would mean for America. Much has been made about how Palin will help rally the Christian extremist base around McSame. Well, Palin can do that for us too – she has already convinced me that this election is far more important than I previously realized.

    To Whom It May Concern:

During her speech in St. Paul on Wednesday night, Alaska Governor Sarah Palin purported to speak for women, small town residents, and everyone who isn’t a member of the “Washington elite.”

Sarah Palin is an intelligent, well spoken woman, but it must be made clear:

We don’t want a country in which women who are raped are refused the right to choose abortion.

We don’t want a country in which religious dogma is taught in public school science class.

We don’t want a country where gay and lesbian citizens are discriminated against.

We don’t want a country where books are banned from public libraries.

America is strongest when we are united, not divided. When our Constitutional liberties are respected. When our politicians rely on ideas and opinions instead of distortions and attacks. The challenges we face are too big to be reduced to name-calling.

Sarah Palin doesn’t speak for us.

    Sincerely,

Don’t worry, McCon is taking on Bush. He now has him in a rope-a-dope. Soon, he’ll have recoved his energy and come out swinging against your interests.

I don’t expect McCain to talk about Iraq policy — or ANY policy — any more than he absolutely has to. He knows that his only hope is to run as “notObama”, and he’s going to attack Obama for all it’s worth, lying as much as necessary, and hoping that Americans are dumb enough to get suckered in again.

    Thurston Howell?

  32. Marie says:

Senator Barack Obama accused his Republican rivals on Wednesday of stirring “phony outrage” over a colloquial comment he made one day earlier about putting “lipstick on a pig,” which he said was a clear reference to Senator John McCain’s policies not a derogatory slur against his running-mate.

“Enough!” Mr. Obama said, interrupting a speech on education to address the latest controversy in the heated presidential campaign. “I don’t care what they say about me, but I love this country too much to let them take over another election with lies and phony outrage and swift boat politics. Enough is enough.”

  33. MapleStreet says:

POLICY ? MCCAIN WOULD BE A FOOL TO TALK ABOUT POLICY !

A recent poll was taken where those who cared about issues were more likely to vote Obama and those who voted on personality would vote McCain.

So we went from a frat boy who barely made it through school to a guy who graduated almost last in his class in the military academy (even though his father was high up in the military and they supposedly always held scintillating conversations over the dinner table).

So may I nominate the sure winner for the next election is John Belushi for President ?
