On 7th Anniversary Of Attacks, White House Claims Bin Laden Was Not The ‘Mastermind’ of Sept. 11

Tomorrow marks the seventh anniversary of the 9/11 attacks. In a press conference today, a reporter asked White House Press Secretary Dana Perino about the administration’s ongoing efforts to find Osama bin Laden, calling him the “mastermind” of 9/11. Perino interrupted the reporter, claiming bin Laden was not the true “mastermind” of the attacks:

Q But Osama bin Laden is the one that — you keep talking about his lieutenants, and, yes, they are very important, but Osama bin Laden was the mastermind of 9/11

PERINO: No, Khalid Sheikh Mohammed was the mastermind of 9/11, and he’s sitting in jail right now.

Watch it:

Perino seems to be attempting to justify the White House’s failure to catch bin Laden by suggesting he was not the “mastermind.” But in September 2006, former press secretary Tony Snow stated:

Osama bin Laden, mastermind of September 11th, the person that many people talk about and still have concerns about, calls this fight, the fight in Iraq, “the third world war.”

While Khalid Sheikh Mohammed has admitted to being the “architect” of 9/11, bin Laden was not inconsequential; he approved and executed the attacks. KSM in fact, brought the idea to bin Laden, who according to the 9/11 Commission, “wanted to hit the White House, Pentagon and U.S. Capitol,” not just the World Trade Center.

Perino suggested that it would take “superpowers” to catch bin Laden. “So there are human limitations to any — this is not the movies, we don’t have superpowers,” she said. It didn’t, however, take “superpowers” to capture bin Laden at Tora Bora in late 2001, where he escaped in part because of a lack of troops.

Remember, bin Laden is no longer the bogeyman for the Republicans to use to try and scare us… He’s outlived his usefulness….

  2. pete says:

Are they effing kidding? Are they saying that we didn’t invade two separate sovereign nations with the expressed intent of getting Bin Laden, his associates, and any who supported him, “dead or alive”?

    Hey trolls

Want to keep blaming Clinton for Osama still being free ?

Oh, Dana, we only thought you failed near-modern history (Bay of Pigs).

Look out, your blatant lying is showing.

Cue the cut-away shot of McDepends claiming he’s Jack Bauer on FAUX Noise …………

  10. Picklee says:

At then end, Perino says we’re going “after him as well.” (?!@#$$%)

Like he wasn’t the initial target in the first place? Isn’t that the story that the Bush Admin. sold us on?

Not to mention our pursuit and eventual capture of Saddam Hussein when in reality he had nothing to do with anything.

  11. Picklee says:

When are we going to get reporters that will ask the right questions for the public?

  12. DieNowForPeace says:

October surprise is rumored to be the arrest of Bin Laden.

As if, but IF so, another in a long line of using terrorists for political gain by the Repukes.

What else would you expect from Shrub’s family friends in Saudi Arabia?

  14. LiberalVoter says:

And in conclusion we are now questioning Daffy Duck, aka superhero Duck Dodgers, for what he knows about OBL. So far we have only gotten leads for a Porky ‘lipstick’ Pig. Eba da dee, that’s all folks.

  15. pbg says:

So Osama Bin Laden is Scooter Libby?
    Guilty, but he walks?

  16. Chuck Feney says:

And, what super powers did we need to catch the one-eyed Mullah Omar, who escaped capture by the US by riding off on a bicycle?

  17. spencers mom says:

Well, if that’s true, McStain will be going to hell for no reason!

Then again, given his age, he’s probably not going to be jumping the gun by much.

    (These superpowers?)

“We’ll smoke him out of his cave, and we’ll get him eventually,” Bush said.

The president also portrayed himself as someone with little patience for diplomatic niceties and mere words.

“I’m more interested in action and results. And if you want to join the campaign against terror,” he said to other countries, “all I ask is results.”

Bush said he was “confident that the al-Qaida organization is moving around Afghanistan. They think they might find safe haven. Not if we think they’re there. And we’ve got them on the run.”

  21. spencers mom says:

I suspect the bin Laden family member stakeholders in the Carlisle Group told Pappy Bush to back off.

  24. IBTunion4obama says:

She just contradicted herself. Perino seems very defensive and nervous after this question. Spencers mom is right, the Bush family and the Bin Laden family have too much partnership to allow their buddy Osama be captured.

  25. alpuz3 says:

Oh jeeb’s… It’s come to this? Blondie’s going to work this angle?

  26. pete says:

I had a scary thought. Before a World Court, Chimpy will argue that he “didn’t mastermind the invasions of Iraq and Afghanistan”, he just, “enlisted his lieutenants” to do it for him.

  27. alpuz3 says:

obviously, Dana? Hmmmmm… where have I heard that smug, condescending tone before? Oh yeah! The new hockey mom, almost Miss Alaska, sportscaster/spokesperson/whatever Vice Presidential wannabe! Lady Palin!

    Perino’s certainly no superintellect

  30. Ms_Joanne says:

Damn, I just got whiplash on that reversal.

How long before it’s Iran who did it? The 9/11 “tribute” shown at the RNC was the groundwork to shift blame to Iran and start yet another war.

McCain: There will be more wars.

    Swell.

    How ?

With a walker and the same protection he had when he ridiculously strolled through Baghdad ?

  33. ricchase says:

Bin Laden is dead and has been for several years. When Bush lies about something significant it shows in his face, his manner. When he has been asked about Bin Laden since at least 2003 he “hims and haws” and then says something really stupid like, “I really don’t think about him that much.” He and the Bin Laden family have been CLOSE personal and business associates since at least the late seventies. Furthermore, there is overwhelming, credible and indisputable evidence that Bin Laden heard about 9/11 about the same time the rest of America did. It is a truth America does not want to hear or believe, it’s simply too horrible to fathom. But that does not keep it from being the truth.

  34. DidHeJustSayThat says:

Does Everyone (anyone) remember those tapes that were leaked to Al Jazeera? The ones from Khalil Sheikh Mohammed? You know, the guy Bush’s White House, GOP politicians and the media have constantly referred to when discussing the War on Terror. The guy that Bush has said will be brought to just? The same guy McCain swears he will bring to justice? Yeah, that Osama bin Khalil Sheikh Mohammed Laden!

The sad part, is that many of us knew this wasn’t about any brown skinned terrorist type. It was all just an excuse to invade a middle east country and pillage that nations resources under the guise of some honorable cause.

  35. fletc3her says:

So the official White House story is that we need Iron Man to capture Bin Laden. Fantastic.

  36. LibertyLover says:

Straight out of 1984 and into the memory hole.

The public does have short memories in some cases, but I’m sure as heck tired of being jerked around by the lies that this administration tells.

  37. LibertyLover says:

How is McCain gonna follow bin laden to the gates of hell, if he wasn’t responsible.

Then again, why do they trot out a video of bin laden about a month before every election thus far to scare the electorate?

  40. dasm says:

The dishonesty of the Bush admin & other Repubs is mind-boggling. They must live in the Twilight Zone. How they can even say these things without fainting away mid-sentence is astonishing. The disrespect, disdain, & insults they keep heaping on the American voters is without equal in history. Anyone who repeats these Repub lies, and those lies spewed by McCain & Palin, should not only be ashamed, but should remember they will be damned to hell, according the the Bible & commandments– remember the “bearing false witness” part?

  41. Above the Clouds says:

It was Osama bin Laden and not Saddam Hussein who killed Americans on US soil–the fact that will be written in history books forever. Bush’s failure with bin Laden and Iraq will be his legacy.

  42. nobillary says:

What? No one ever told Dana that John McCain knows how to catch bin Laden? He says it all the time, and if we elect him, he’ll catch bin Laden, and end the war in Iraq (cause he knows how to win wars too!). She should call him!

  43. Roket says:

Come on now, give poor Dana a break. When your entire existence is based on lies and deceit, you’re bound to get the lies tangled up every now and then. If she doesn’t come out with a clarification all she has to do is come up with a new and improved batch of lies to cover up the new and improved mess. It’s quite simple really. Drill, P.O.W., 9/11, Hockey Mom, repeat three times together or separately.

Here’s my email to the White House tonight…

    Dear Mr. President,

I guess this means that the following statements made by you are now inoperable?

    Thanks for the memories…

“The most important thing is for us to find Osama bin Laden. It is our number one priority and we will not rest until we find him.”
    - G.W. Bush, 9/13/01

“I want justice…There’s an old poster out West, as I recall, that said, ‘Wanted: Dead or Alive,’”
    - G.W. Bush, 9/17/01, UPI

Maybe if you didn’t spend so much time on T-Ball at the White House while the country is fighting two wars we may have found him.

Or…maybe…..you have him in a black site somewhere like KSM and you plan on trotting him out in October to get McCain elected. The fact that we can even imagine that scenario will be your legacy.

    Worst. President. Ever.

OBL should not be viewed as an afterthought by anyone let alone the WH. Besides my anger towards Bushco on utter failure, there is culpability of the MSM for NEVER pressing them for answers and holding them accountable.

  65. BaxterJ says:

  66. NoOneYouKnow says:

Yup, we had enough troops at Tora Bora to capture bin Laden. Rumsfeld and Cheney pulled back US troops and told Afghan tribesmen to take Tora Bora, knowing that their loyalty to the US and against bin Laden was very suspect, as was their combat effectiveness. I don’t know any clearer way to say this: Cheney and Rumsfeld allowed bin Laden to escape.
    Why?
Well, without a boogeyman, Bushco’s multinational friends wouldn’t continue to profit enormously from Bushco’s “Long War” on “terror;” Bushco couldn’t propagandize as effectively for its illegal invasion of Iraq; Bushco couldn’t continue to dismantle the Constitution and other fundamental legal protections of Americans and POWs; and, perhaps more than any other reason: If bin Laden was captured, he might talk about how he had a lot of help from non-Al Qaeda people to carry out the 9/11 attacks.

  67. johndoraemi says:

    1. The white house committed high treason on 9/11 whether “Al Qaeda” was involved or not. The attacks were allowed to happen in numerous ways. Numerous lies were told. An ongoing cover up protects the guilty.

    2. Some “foreign governments” were involved, and this has been blatantly covered up because these governments are “allies.” Protecting “foreign governments” who attack the nation is the Constitutional definition of “treason.”

    3. Democrats have protected republicans from treason investigations, and both parties are implicated in this post-constitutional destruction of the rule of law.

    4. It’s never actually been proven the men actually got on the planes, only that the FBI claims they did. Obvious evidence, such as video surveillance tapes at the airport gates has never been released to the public.

    5. The US continues to allow Pakistani intelligence “ISI” to protect Al Qaeda, as this is a strategically necessary “threat” to justify ongoing US war crimes in Asia.

Your media has failed you. You will have to investigate these matters for yourself if you want to know the truth.

  69. kathaksung says:

This thread itself is cover up for government. Al Qaida works for US intelligence.

Al Qaida exists where US intelligence dominates. Al Qaida in US when Bush need excuse to activate Mid-east war. That is 911 attack. Al Qaida is everywhere in Iraq now to bomb innocent civilians when US occupies Iraq. Strange to say, under the Saddam regime, there is no Al Qaida. Al Qaida seems only exist where the regime being controlled by US. So we see no Al qaida in Syria and Iran. But they appears to attack ordinary people when the government either is controlled by US intelligence or supported by US intelligence. That’s why you see Al Qaida attacks in US, in Afghanistan, in Pakistan, in Iraq (after it is occupied by US). Because where they are protected by the intelligence, worked as a whip to beat people. When government want money and power, they beat the people with this whip (Al Qaida terror attack) People feel hurt then give up their civil rights and money to the government.
