2008 marks deadliest year for U.S. troops in Afghanistan.

Insurgents killed two U.S. soldiers in Afghanistan today, on the seventh anniversary of the 9/11 attacks. Today’s attack brings the total number of U.S. troops who have died in Afghanistan this year to 113, making it the “deadliest year for American forces since U.S. troops invaded the country in 2001 for sheltering Osama bin Laden.”

Dont expect McCain to discuss any issues.

  2. Zooey says:

    My condolences to their families.

By the way, where is Osama bin Laden? I think our troops must be wondering why they are over there…

Bush is listening to Obama again…going into Pakistan and all now. I smell a “October surprise”…like most of us do already. But we know what happens when Elmer Fudd goes after Bugs Bunny. Unless Bush adds to the debt to payoff the Pakistani’s, he isn’t getting bin Laden.

The progressive answer to troop deaths in Iraq was withdrawal, not a surge.

Obama (and McCain) wants additional troops in Afghanistan

Do progressives here agree that more troops in Afghanistan is the answer?

    (I support the additional troops)

  6. Jim Wolf359 says:

Yes Backup, I do support additional troops for Afganistan. But if the dry alkie in the WH had actually been serious about getting the bastard, we wouldn’t need to do that now, would we?
McCain/Palin, Intellecually and Morally unfit for office.

  7. Jim Wolf359 says:

That would also mean not waging a crimminally inept and disastorous war in Iraq.

  8. Sven Ortmann says:

Additional troops is a primitive answer to the challenge if not accompanied by better ideas.
It’s worthless without a good strategy, and uniformed officials begin to say publicly that the strategy doesn’t work so far.

I believe that the Afghanistan war is based on too many questionable assumptions anyway, like

    - Taliban will regain power in Afghanistan without our opposition (Why? They’re not the only power there!)

    - Taliban would host AQ again (Why? We could repeat the 2001/02 invasion any time!)

    - Afghanistan as safe haven would benefit AQ (why? AQ seems to be fine in Pakistan since years and it has turned into a movement’s brand rather than an organization anyway!)

The Western troops in Afghanistan actually fuel the Taliban’s jihad recruitment rive. Jihad against the other Muslim factions in the Afghanistan civil war would draw much less recruits.

    >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

The progressive view was we shouldnt have troops dying in Iraq because we never had any morally justifyable reason for being there in the first place.

    >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

Only if it is part of a larger strategy that goes beyond just keep killing all the brown ones and God can sort them out. IF we couple attacking ON THE GROUND the Taliban strongholds WITH building roads, schools, and hospitals. Attempting to build REAL ground up democracy I would support more troops especially if that means less dropping of bombs from great heights and doing what is necessary to lessen indiscriminate deaths. Putting a WHOLE LOT of resources into REAL intelligence as part of that kind of larger strategy, trying to win over the reasonable and moderate Afghanis, making it clear it is a war on Al Queda and the Taliban and NOT on Islam a I would support more troops ONCE WE have them extricated from Iraq.

Yeah and frankly he is good at it. When will the left learn to avoid the tendency toward circular firing squads?

Yes… I’m gonna assume Gene didn’t mean that.

Sven is a troll, or sure acts like one a lot of the time, like on the Hannity thread above this one, from earlier in the day.

I simply have NO use for trolls, especially glib, snide twits like backdoor. Love the smoking jacket, BTW, but aren’t the epaulets and medals a bit much?
