Dennis Baxley, the executive director of the Christian Coalition of Florida, told the Miami Herald yesterday that he was “suspect” of Sen. Barack Obama’s (D-IL) “Muslim roots and training,” calling them “scary”:
“He’s pretty scary to us,” he said. “I think his Muslim roots and training — while they try to minimize it — it’s there.” [...] ”
“I can’t speak for anyone else but I’m probably typical of all of the people who are suspect of those Muslim roots. We all know what early intervention with children is all about, and I am really wondering what the influence was on him from his father’s background and being in a Muslim country.”
Baxley said he was “particularly” concerned about Obama’s heritage given the “active movement by radical Muslims to occupy us.” Note to Baxley: Obama “has never been a Muslim, was not raised as a Muslim, and is a committed Christian.” (HT: Ben Smith)
.
When wil Christians stop lying?
.
September 11th, 2008 at 1:10 pmBaxley may or may not believe that Obama is a “scary Muslim.” That is not the point. The point is getting as many people as possible to believe what he says he believes about Baxley. Baxley is one of those people that will never see the truth because winning the election depends on him believing what he is saying.
September 11th, 2008 at 1:12 pmAnd the fanatical Christian zealots scare the bejeebers out of me.
September 11th, 2008 at 1:12 pmWell, the FL Christian Coalition scares me. Especially since they don’t even follow the tenants of who they claim to worship.
September 11th, 2008 at 1:13 pmWould Baxley mind giving any source (other than his p!ss-soaked imagination) that backs up his claim that there’s an “active movement by radical Muslims to occupy us”? I seem to have missed this.
Baxley should also know that Islam is neither genetic, nor is it passed like a communicable disease.
September 11th, 2008 at 1:14 pm“I am really wondering what the influence was on him from his father’s background and being in a Muslim country. I’m not cooking up some plot about Muslims trying to inject a leader into our country but I am wondering how it influences his thinking.”
______________
Good point, Baxley. How WOULD being exposed to Muslims at an early age affect a person?
I’m going to go out on a limb and say that it may just have influenced Senator Obama to view Muslims as fellow human beings entitled to freedom of worship, rather than believing in your Christian Fascist stereotype of Islam.
September 11th, 2008 at 1:15 pmMy question is this…
Why would a man who is allegedly an indoctrinated Muslim attend a Baptist Church for multiple years to listen to someone like the Rev. Jeremiah Wright? These people are letting their bigotry show and it has NOTHING to do with Sen. Obama’s religious background or “training”, etc. The only thing that makes me somewhat less worried about whack jobs like this moron affecting the election is something Arianna Huffington said regarding race in this election. She said, “Anyone who wouldn’t vote for Barack Obama because he’s black wasn’t, probably, going to vote for a Democrat anyways.”
These people are the fringe in this country and we need to start painting them as such and painting their supporters (ie Gov. Sarah Palin) as the fringe whackos that they are.
September 11th, 2008 at 1:17 pmThere is never any real accounting for the crazy of true wingnuts – but here’s a suggestion, why don’t they try GROWING SOME BALLS!

Stop crying like little girls and MAN UP! Pussy.

September 11th, 2008 at 1:17 pmWe do have freedom of religion in this country, don’t we? What is wrong with being a Muslim? Nothing! Does this guy realize that the world is filled with hard working, good people who practice that faith? To paint them all with a broad brush that says “terrorist” is just so wrong. I am tired of them trying scare us by insulting a major religion.
Obama is a Christian. I am a Christian. I also believe in the Bill of Rights, as does Obama. I am tired of Muslim bigotry just to scare people.

September 11th, 2008 at 1:19 pm“…active movement by radical Muslims to occupy us.”
The last time I looked there was no Iraqi “Green Zone” in Washington, D.C.
The only way the Muslims want to occupy us in in some meaningful dialog to get us to leave their Country.
September 11th, 2008 at 1:20 pmThe synchronization of the whole project is amazing. All of the little pieces fit together so nicely.
A sexist racist, tax raising, government socializing, pork barreling, conspiring terrorist, child molesting, uppity indoctrinated Muslim negro.
That is just this week!
At least we have a couple of True Red Blooded Honorable Mavericks in this election.

All of man’s made up Gods are false, they have never existed and never will.
September 11th, 2008 at 1:21 pmThese Reich Wing Christians are scarier than any extremist Muslims, these people don`t want sex ed in schools they only want abstinence which doesn`t work, statistics show that teen STD`s and teen pregnency are up.I say ask any of these Christian Zealots if they like Muhammod Ali if they say yes then remind them he is Muslim, and the same goes for Ahmahd Rashad and others like them. These people will say and do anything to get and keep the REICH WING in the W.H.And also tell them Obama did not take his oath for the Senate on the Koran. They are like McPalin in looking quite rediculus on these issues because they know they will not win on the occupation of Iraq, health care, our infrastructure and the economy. These people only care about their party and not America……….
September 11th, 2008 at 1:21 pmPalin is a creationist. She thinks the Earth is around 5000 years old.
And here’s another “talking-shit” point for refutation:
Madrasah (Arabic: ?????, madrasa pl. mad?ris ?????) is the Arabic word for any type of school, college or university, whether secular or religious (of any religion).
Therefore, Jerry Falwell et. al. have ALL attended a Madrasah.
And I could care less if Barack was three-toed Wiccan practicing sloth, we’ve been bludgeoned to senselessness by faux Christian politicians long enough.
PRESIDENT OBAMA!!!!!
September 11th, 2008 at 1:22 pmHey Mr. Baxley… BOO!
September 11th, 2008 at 1:24 pmThis man is a racist who can’t except a black man running for President so he uses another term to scare people. They can’t come at Obama with a real reason to oppose Obama so anything and everything will do. I wonder if this idiot feels the same way about Jews? He can use the word “christian” or call himself a christian all he wants, but and all who follow him will burn in HELL!
September 11th, 2008 at 1:24 pmMy guess is that he’s scary because he’s black. It’s just not acceptable to say that, but for some reason it is acceptable to say he’s scary because of a religion that he doesn’t even belong to.
September 11th, 2008 at 1:24 pmWe all know what early intervention with children is all about,
You should know anyway, most likely you were a victim of it, indoctrinated into a belief system of hate, bigotry and intolerance.

September 11th, 2008 at 1:27 pmThe responding statement from Barack Obama’s campaign director in Florida, Steve Schale:
‘Schale says: “Senator Obama is a committed Christian. He has never been a Muslim and was not raised as a Muslim. It is disturbing that former State Rep. Baxley is using the Christian Coalition to spread these lies for political gain.
“John McCain and his Republican Party are launching the same, old, false attacks against Senator Obama because they do not want the American people to hear a debate about issues that matter. Enough is enough. In the last eight weeks of this campaign, were going to stay focused on Barack Obama and Joe Biden’s plans to deliver the change we need.”‘
September 11th, 2008 at 1:27 pmDennis Baxley said:
Insert Jew in place of Muslim and what do you get but a fire breathing Nazi! But because he hides behind Christ’s robe he claims to be authoritative on the matter. So were the Nazi’s.
What this Faux-Christian, aka EVILgelical, forgot was that Christ’s robe was gabled away…

September 11th, 2008 at 1:27 pmThe Christian Coalition scares me. They are a bunch of dominionist theocrats who want to establish their version of God’s law on this country. Each and every time that socially progressive legislation is proposed, such as recognizing the right of same-sex couples to marry or adopt children, this bunch is up in arms and screaming about how it is the end of the world.
No one believes that Obama is a Muslim except those on the extreme Right. And they believe this because they want to, not because there is any evidence for it.
Bearing false witness… America, this is your new “Christianity” brought to you by the same folks who helped put Bush/Cheney in the White House.
September 11th, 2008 at 1:27 pmIf Jesus were alive today, he’d make an exception to his policy of non-violence and slap the living jeepers out of his so-called followers like this asswipe. PUKE.

September 11th, 2008 at 1:28 pmThis is all the more hilarious after seeing movies like Jesus Camp. Indoctrination? You mean what I went through for 15 years in Catholic schools? lol
I’m convinced that certain politicians want to continue to stick “Islam” in front of the word terrorists so they can just belittle the religion and thus ALL Muslims.
There’s nothing inherently evil about the religion than any other one, when you get down to it… but they’ve been able to associate the two with one another to discriminate.

_______
I don’t know how much of a fringe they actually are. According to a Pew survey from 2006:
32% of Americans think the Bible should have more influence on U.S. laws than the will of the people.
60% of white Evangelicals have this belief.
20% of Christians in the U.S. expect Jesus to return in their lifetimes.
69% of the population believes liberals have “gone too far in keeping religion out of government.”
42% believe the Earth and humans have existed in their present form since the beginning of time.
21% believe evolution was guided by a supreme being.
42% believe Israel was given by God to the Jews.
35% believe Israel fulfills a biblical prophecy about the second coming of Jesus.
That’s not fringe. That’s a large chunk of whackos.

September 11th, 2008 at 1:29 pmWhat else can you expect from republicans? They smeared john kerry as a coward and belittled his service because they had two cowards on their ticket, one a draft dodger and the other a deserter. I guess this means that mccain is a terrorist?
Seriously, someone posted yesterday somewhere that since “mc” is a variation of “mac” which is “son of” in scottish, mccain is the son of cain, or the devil. Why aren’t the fundies afraid that mccain is the anti-christ? you know that if mccain was a dem this would be a main talking point.
September 11th, 2008 at 1:30 pmToday, of all days, you’d think people would stop to think about how bigotry and religious intolerance kill. We weren’t attacked by “Muslims” seven years ago today; we were attacked by extremist religious bigots. It really doesn’t matter what type of extremist religious bigots they were; their motivation was bigotry, not Islam.
Bigotry begets bigotry. And so it goes.

September 11th, 2008 at 1:33 pmWhat a maroon…
“”Charlie Dean is one the verge of becoming a Florida senator while Dennis Baxley will have to leave the Legislature altogether, after Dean won a paper-thin Republican primary yesterday headlined by the two outgoing House members.
…
Dean was considered the frontrunner in the race, as he is a well-known former sheriff of Citrus County (a key part of the sprawling Senate district) and had been endorsed by Argenziano. But Baxley made it close, thanks in part to lots of help from religious groups and the National Rifle Association.
With Baxley headed home, the Legislature loses one of its highest-profile members. The Ocala funeral director has long been among the most strident social conservatives in Tallahassee and has been at the center of a host of controversial battles, from Terri Schiavo to guns-at-work. (It’s also worth noting that Baxley’s son, Damon, who had been running for his father’s House seat, also lost yesterday in a Republican primary.)
Dean now moves on to face Democrat Susan Franks in the June 26th general election.”

Sorry I fear my government and the extremists in the radical right much more than I fear those scary muslims who we are told want to kill us and all of our children and want to destroy civilization. September 11th, 2008 at 1:52 pmChristians can be crazy at times. I know a former dealer of nose candy who has “been saved” and attends serviced times a week. When he became Sunday School teacher he began telling me of the outreach services his church had to attract minorities to their services, which includes a bus service on Sunday Mornings to pick up children of color.
I have learned that he “bribes” his class to learn Bible verses and pays off in play money that can be spent at the church “store” to buy Jesus Junk and candy. For Halloween, a Pagan celebration I believe, he bought pirate crap at Big Lots and gave his students swords and costumes and relished telling me how the black kids didn’t get any because they didn’t learn enough Bible verses.
The day he told me about the armed patrol the church has in the parking lot during Sunday School and church I asked why and he claimed that since they started their bus service, some parents of those bussed-in kids have been picking up their children instead of riding the bus home. Evidently the sight of “those people” waiting in the parking lot for their children after Sunday School was scary to people arriving to attend church.
Not that there has been any incident to warrant such measures, my friend was full of platitudes about an ounce of prevention. I ended that conversation when I asked if the church would be supplying their home guard with uniforms like Blackwater employees wear!

Actually their motivation was our one-sided relationship with Israel. Historically, nations and peoples were “taken over” by acts of war, not by decree. Palestine is still fighting for what was taken away from them by a “higher authority”, so technically, the score has yet to be settled in their eyes.
Please try to keep up.
September 11th, 2008 at 1:54 pmWelcome to America . . . land of the insane. What will actually be a good thing if McCain is elected is that the entire Western World is tired of us and realizes we are insane . . . and dangerous. They are waiting. McCain wins and we will be quickly, seriously and effectively marginalized. That will be the end of America and perhaps we can start over. If we don’t start over, at least the U.S. will no longer be a scourge on mankind . .. just a bunch of cave dwellers braying at the moon, running around camp fires, denying global warming and claiming the world is 6000 years old. Even multi-national corporations don’t want to do business here anymore because of the Dark Age mentality of a high proportion of our electorate. September 11th, 2008 at 1:57 pmBy the way did anyone catch Barack Obama on David Letterman last night? Anyone who wasn’t impressed by him last night is either mentally challenged or clinically brain dead.
He showed that he gets it. His answers to international issues such as Russia were very thoughtful and intelligent. His thoughts on the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan were right on the mark. His thoughts on our own country, on 9/11 were brilliant. He praised Bush and Ghouliani for the way they handled the days and weeks following 9/11. He wasn’t divisive or vile, he didn’t make any snide remarks when he could have. The man is a class act!
Barack looked and talked like a leader. He has the sound judgement and compassion needed to lead our country through the tough times ahead. Barack Obama will most definitely return class, morals, respect, character, dignity and sound judgement back to the Whitehouse!
September 11th, 2008 at 1:58 pm” We all know what early intervention with children is all about”
Yes, and Christians are as good as the best of them when it comes to brainwashing children. I know, I was one of those brainwashed children who had to pull himself out of the grips of the insanity known as Christianity.
Those of us who are gay know all too well how Christians damage children who happen to be gay because of it’s insane ideologies.

Great post osage! It needs to be repeated!
In October 2001, shaken by a nerve-gas false alarm at the White House, Vice President Dick Cheney, reports Mayer, went underground. He literally embunkered himself in “a secure, undisclosed location,” which she describes as “one of several Cold War-era nuclear-hardened subterranean bunkers built during the Truman and Eisenhower administrations, the nearest of which were located hundreds of feet below bedrock…” That bunker would be dubbed, perhaps only half-sardonically, “the Commander in Chief’s Suite.”
Oh, and in that period, if Cheney had to be in transit, “he was chauffeured in an armored motorcade that varied its route to foil possible attackers.” In the backseat of his car (just in case), adds Mayer, “rested a duffel bag stocked with a gas mask and a biochemical survival suit.” And lest danger rear its head, “rarely did he travel without a medical doctor in tow.”

September 11th, 2008 at 2:10 pmi had an exchange with someone on mccain’s blog the other day about this, and he was still spouting the meme about obama’s “my muslim faith” quote to stephanopolous. maybe it’s just me, but it seems that anyone with enough brain cells to be able to successfully operate a computer should be able to grasp that this is no longer an issue; the mccain campaign knows he’s not a muslim, and fox is now falling all over itself to claim (falsely) that they never called him a muslim. why would they do that if he really were a muslim?
anyway. i highly recommend going over to mccain’s blog and dropping some truth. they’re not used to it over there.
but be warned: the mccain blog is technologically deficient, and won’t necessarily behave in a predictable manner. it took me four days to figure out why it wouldn’t let me log in.

Zimzone, I ordered that book about a month ago but I haven’t had a chance to read it. Any good?
September 11th, 2008 at 2:14 pmI don’t believe it.
I don’t believe that fundamentalist Christians are as large a voting block as we are being told. I don’t believe that they came out in record numbers to support Bush in 2004. I don’t believe that they are as stupid and narrow-minded as they are made out to be.
These are all stereotypes that hugely politically expedient for the right wing, but when these claims are made, they are always presented with only anecdotal evidence. Were there REPORTS of huge rural turnout in Ohio in 2004? The cameras showed long lines and huge turnout in Democratic areas, yes. But I heard NOTHING about record turn out in other areas. All I know is their votes ’showed up’ on electronic voting machines, but I don’t trust electronic voting enough to consider this authoritative evidence.
Their message is amplified by the corporate media, but amplified from what? Daryll shows up prodigiously, but he’s fictional.
This demographic is surpassingly expedient for the lying theives who control our government. Fundamentalist Christian are portrayed as transcendentally irrational and so are completely immune to reasoned discussion. Their thinking is so appallingly disgusting that no one seeks them out. They live on the rural fringes, so they are expensive to survey and report on. They are fanatically devoted to their leaders, whom they believe implicitly with religious fervor. Who would approach such lunatics voluntarily? In short, they are the perfect justification for any implausible election result.
Our intuition rebells when we hear of them. No one could be ‘that’ stupid. No one could be ‘that’ narrow minded. No one with ‘that’ little brains could have such a powerful following. When normal Americans are faring so badly, how could such numbers of exceptionally stupid people be supported? What percentage of YOUR acquaintance fits their description? 40%??? 30%???
What if our intuition is right? What if they don’t exist. What if they really are a small fringe segment that has been ‘amplified’ by a political party who controls the media and the election systems? How would we know? Who among the current Republican leadership would you think above such a fraud?
It is all just WAY TOO CONVENIENT for them.

COMMANDMENT #9
‘You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor.’
Shame on you. SHAME.
Pray for forgiveness.

Hi Wayne: And the golden rule which is blatantly ignored by the faux christians of “do unto others as they would do unto you”…..or “we are all created equal in the eyes of God”.
Sadly most of the vocal “Christian” leaders changed the golden rule to “Do unto others before they do unto you.” and “I got mine, screw you.”
I just wish these Religions would quit shedding blood in the name of “God” and using “God” as a reason to discriminate against others different from themselves.
I like your Christ, I do not like your Christians. Your Christians are so unlike your Christ. — Mohandas Gandhi
September 11th, 2008 at 2:18 pmsatirev Says: Isn’t the Commandment “Thou shalt not lie or utter falsehoods” something which the religious right believes?????
If so, what’ with all of the McBush/Palin lies??
September 11th, 2008 at 2:02 pm
the Commandment I memorized (and scribbled many thousands of times, as punishment for my insolence) was: “Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbor.”
If you parse it carefully enough, it contains a dispensation for falsehoods and untruths which do NOT implicate one’s neighbors.
That is, unless you’re telling lies about your local folks, you can dissemble your ass off about anything else.

hey, no problem. Obama’s not his neighbor. they don’t even live in the same state, for chrissake…give the man a break…he’s a minister, after all…figger he’d have biblical hermeneutics down…
September 11th, 2008 at 2:22 pmNow instead of just worrying about terrorists, we have to also worry about Christian like this guy. These people are terrorists too. They hate people based on stupid bullzhit they make up. I guess they think that they will be greeted in 16 virgins in heavan if they attack innocent people and call them names. And I’m sure they think it’s approved by God for them to hate blacks, hispanic, and mexicans. I know mexicans are hispanic, but they don’t.
September 11th, 2008 at 2:38 pmThe bible scriptures that those on the right seem to forget:
“Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called the children of God” ~ Matthew 5:9
“The righteous is concerned for the rights of the poor, the wicked does not understand such concern” ~ Proverbs 29:7
“Put your sword back in its place,” Jesus said to him, “for all who draw the sword will die by the sword.” ~ Matthew 26:52

September 11th, 2008 at 3:45 pmOh, BTW …Boo! I’m a scary Buddhist.
Gee, sorry I forgot to blame Israel for 9/11.
I wasn’t talking about all of the factors that entered into the decision to attack the U.S. that day; I was talking about the one factor that could lead people to murder innocent civilians (and to kill themselves in the process). Political grievances don’t lead people to do indefensible things like killing innocent civilians by the thousands. Hatred does. Religious intolerance does. Bigotry does.
Do you seriously believe Osama bin Laden could have recruited people to conduct suicide missions without the religious angle? Bin Laden and his generals may have been motivated by “secular” political concerns (at least in part) … but you’ll notice they’re still alive. They’re not the ones strapping on the C4 or piloting planes into buildings. And they’re political objectives don’t provide sufficient motivation for people to sacrifice their own lives; but religion (and religious intolerance) does. So they preach hatred and intolerance in order to give their followers something to die for.
The point being, this jerk Baxley, who’s a religious bigot in his own right, is contributing to an atmosphere of bigotry which leads to the kinds of things that happened on 9/11. You can’t fight bigotry with bigotry. That’s the damn point.
But next time, I’ll be sure to blame Israel.
September 11th, 2008 at 3:58 pmKeith Maurice Ellison is a Muslin, United States Congressman from Minnesota as of 2006. World hasn’t ended so what is the big deal.
September 11th, 2008 at 4:18 pm111 – mean’t Muslim…sorry multi tasking
September 11th, 2008 at 4:42 pmTou know, Jesus said exactly what he would do when he came back. he would sit there, and everybody would come up to him, and he’d say,”What did you do for the poor? Did you give shelter to strangers, did you visit the afflicted?”
September 11th, 2008 at 4:53 pmAnd these believers will say “Why, uh, no, Lord, that’s socialism!”
And he’ll send them to hell.
It’s right there in Mattheww 21. And it’s not by Saint Paul, or some church father.
It’s the word of God, according to these people, and they insult it every day of their lives.
They slide right over the sermon on the mount to some brutal passage in the old testament, and say “The Bahhhble says…”
The Bible says if a man ask you for your shirt, give him your coat as well. Give up all that you have and follow me. The Bible says it is the people that have nothing are those who are the beloved of God. The bible says the man of the wrong religion who helps pick a man out of a ditch is doing God’s work.
What have you done for the poor, Mr. Baxley?
Those Christians are the ones to be afraid of. The Crusaders killed more people than the Muslims have and probably ever will. I’m scared of Sarah Palin and her thinking that “Iraq war was a task from God.” We should be fearing nutcases like those people that could launch us into another unjust, trillion dollar war.
September 11th, 2008 at 7:44 pmAlthough I’m a catholic by birth, I’d like to point out the fact that (radical) Christians crusades these same Muslim people centuries ago. We should never take current events out of context of history.
September 12th, 2008 at 5:02 amheh didn’t see the post before me. Good point with palin though. It’s one thing to have faith in a religion, but to say it’s gods plan and weave that into politics and then impose your belief on millions of other people that don’t share that same view is not fair, but I guess that’s describing politics in general.
