McCain: Palin Has National Security Experience Because She Knows About ‘Energy’»

Yesterday in an interview with an NBC affiliate in Portland, ME, Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) was questioned about Gov. Sarah Palin’s (R-AK) national security experience. First, he tried changing the subject to the economy. When the reporter refused to let him slide away, McCain then offered platitudes about how Palin is “right” on every single issue while Sen. Barack Obama (D-IL) is “wrong.” Frustrated, the reporter again pressed him for a specific example. McCain simply replied, “Energy”:

Q: Well, you say you’re sure that she has the experience, but again, I’m just asking for an example. What experience does she have in the field of national security?

McCAIN: Energy. She knows more about energy than probably anyone else in the United States of America. …. And we all know that energy is a critical and vital national security issue.

Watch it:

As the reporter pointed out, McCain has called “radical Islamic extremism” the “absolute gravest threat” facing Americans. This claim that Palin is a national security expert because she knows about energy seems to be the latest attempt by the McCain campaign to make up qualifications where there aren’t any. (Palin herself tried out this argument yesterday as well.) A look at past attempts by the McCain and its supporters to create national security experience for Palin:

ALASKA IS NEAR RUSSIA

“Alaska is right next to Russia. She understands that. Look, Sen. Obama’s never visited south of our border. I mean, please.” [McCain, 9/3/08]

“You know, the experience that she comes from is what she’s done in government, and remember, Alaska is the closest part of our continent to Russia. It’s not as if she doesn’t understand what’s at stake here.” [Cindy McCain, 8/31/08]

“But the other thing about her, she does know about international relations because she is right up there in Alaska right next door to Russia.” [Fox News host Steve Doocy, 8/29/08]

FISHING ISSUES

“She worked with permitting issues and with fishing issues dealing with the sea fishing industry there in Alaska.” [GOP strategist Tyler Harber, 9/5/08]

OSMOSIS

“As that state’s governor, Sarah Palin would know more by osmosis –- if nothing else –- about the necessity for U.S. anti-missile systems than either Messrs. Obama or Biden.” [Neocon activist Frank Gaffney, 9/2/08]

It used to be that when asked about the economy, McCain would try to switch to talking about national security. Now when he’s asked about national security…he switches to the economy. (HT: Joe Sudbay)

Transcript:

Q: Let’s move on to what you say is the number one issue facing the United States in our time, and that is the challenge of addressing Islamist extremism. What credentials does Gov. Palin have in national security, diplomacy, foreign policy, that qualify her to be your partner on that issue — the fight against Islamist extremism.

McCAIN: Well, obviously, the economy is a major challenge facing America —

Q: No, I’m using your words, Sen. McCain. You have said, this summer, that the number one challenge of our time is Islamist extremism.

McCAIN: No. I said the greatest challenge of our time as national security threats. And I’ve also said that jobs and the economy are the number one issue facing America.

But the point is that Gov. Palin was right on the issues. She understands energy, which is one of the fundamental issues of our nation’s security. She was responsible for a $40-billion pipeline that’s going to bring natural gas to the lower 48.

She was right on Iraq, Sen. Obama was wrong. She has more experience than Sen. Obama does. She was right on Russia, he was wrong, as he made moral equivalency between Russia and Georgia at the time that Russia attacked. She was right on Iran, when he was wrong on Iran. She doesn’t want to sit down in face-to-face negotiations with Ahmadinejad or the other leaders. She’s right on foreign policy, Sen. Obama’s wrong. I’m sure she has the experience and judgment necessary to lead this country and I’m confident the American people will agree with her as well.

Q: Well, you say you’re sure that she has the experience, but again, I’m just asking for an example. What experience does she have in the field of national security?

McCAIN: Energy. She knows more about energy than probably anyone else in the United States of America. …. And we all know that energy is a critical and vital national security issue.

  1. margerine Says:

I’m still not understanding how she knows so much about energy, what it is she knows about energy or anything else. He keeps bringing this up and I’m not even sure what backs that up… Nevermind the national security nonsense about it, even just the initial statement makes little sense.

She’s governor of a state with oil. That makes her the foremost expert on energy?

According to the McBush/Falin’08 Campaign, I’m qualified to address the concerns of the Nation in respect to natural gas because I fart!

Because the national polls are biased and skewed, and the MSM isn’t doing its job.

I hate to repeat myself but absolutely no one who knows anything about commercial fishing would use the phrase “sea fishing industry”

She knows more about energy than probably anyone else in the United States of America. ….

Good Lord, this is over the top. Are you kidding me?

  8. larkohio Says:

I have been to Canada and Mexico. Does that give me national security experience? Just wondering if I can beef up the resume… I was wondering how McSame was going to do without his politic wife attached to him. Is she ever going to go out on the campaign trail alone? Enquiring minds want to know.

  9. unbelievable Says:

McCAIN: Energy. She knows more about energy than probably anyone else in the United States of America. …. And we all know that energy is a critical and vital national security issue.

They should sequester him from the press also. What an idiot!

  10. Bob Says:

There are plenty of people who have been in ‘energy’ longer than Palin has been alive. She knows just enough about energy to be a danger to National Security.

  11. Max-1 Says:

    .

    Most qualified on energy because:
    ~ Sarah lives in Alaska
~ Her husband works for BP
~ Alaska is close to Russia
~ Her State is a welfare State

She’s qualified to address National (in)Security because:
    ~ See above

She’s qualified to address jobs and the economy because:
    ~ See above

Sarah’s approach to the Middle East leaves her qualified because:

He’s against any farm produced cellulostic sources.

  14. BearCountry Says:

margerine is correct. What does she know about energy (whate is meant by that word in that context?), and what makes her know more than anyone else in America? I have no idea what the answer is supposed to mean. Does she know more in a scientific sense, or a producer sense, or a user sense.

When you have nothing to say change the subject or say something that is so dumb that the only challenge is to say that it is a dumb statement. We know that the MSM doesn’t do that to repugs, so the subject will change. At least there is a little movement by the MSM toward forcing a real answer by st. john. We’ll see how that works with palin.

Talk about desperate! Palin’s ‘experience’? What experience? Experience bankrupting a town of 6,000 people? Experience milking the Federal government? Experience abusing her authority for personal vendettas?

It’s not about experience. It’s about judgment. And like yours, hers sucks!

    ____________________________________________________________

Is the tendency to speak like this part of the McCain gene pool? We have his daughter proclaiming that nobody understands war other than her family, and how we have Daddy proclaiming that nobody understands energy as well as this former Miss Alaska runner-up.

I work with engineers, almost all of whom understand energy better than Saraccuda. They also laughed when asked to explain how energy was related to national security. The only form of energy that could possibly be related to national security is petroleum, and only for the reason that we are willing to jeopardize our national security to get it.

If McCain is going to make such an outrageous claim about what Palin brings to the table, the least he could do is give us some specifics about how a woman who participated in beauty pageants, majored in journalism, and was mayor of a small town knows more about energy than anyone in the country merely because as governor she found herself in negotiations for a natural gas pipeline and because her husband has worked for BP.

  22. tom Says:

McNumbNuts is obviously already dead from the neck up. Therefore, Failin’ Palin’s lack of readiness to be president is a clear and present danger.

  23. A Patriot Acting Says:

Palin instituted what amounts to a windfall profits tax in the state of Alaska. Each Alaskan resident now receives an additional 1,200 dollars each year which amounts to a total of about 3,200 dollars per citizen from taxes charged for each barrel of oil that leaves Alaska. McCain is AGAINST any windfall taxes so if this is his idea of being an energy expert I would like to ask him why a windfall tax is a genius move for Alaska but not the right thing to do to ease American’s fuel costs.

  39. bertski Says:

I saw Michel Martin a week or so ago on Bill Maher, she said “disregard Sarah Palin at your peril”. I believe she is right. Look at how the news cycle is dominated, look at the giddy enthusiasm of the fundamentalist right. McCain has made a reckless, short term gamble in order to get elected. What we may in reality face if this ticket is elected is a President Palin. If you can believe it, this scares me much more than the thought of GWB in the WH for another term. She is obviously extreme in her views, reckless in her actions and willing to bend (if not break) the rule of law.

The “mavericks” may indeed fit the dictionary definition, but with the blatant lies, cronyism, links to corruption and dark-ages policies, they are simply more reckless versions of what we have had for the past eight years.

  40. samsuncle Says:

Excellent interview by Rob Caldwell. How can anyone with enought since to come out of the rain vote for McCain. Every answer was total bullshit. I can’t wait for the debates.

  41. Saint Augustine Says:

I sure, absolutely sure that an examination of Sarah’s college transcripts will show all the courses in energy and government that qualifies her as Alaska’s very own Mary Poppins who, as we know, is practically perfect in every way. And wasn’t she a POWER forward on that basketball team?

Now as far as John McSame’s lying, please remember that he was a POW who was broken and didn’t have the opportunity to lie to us for 5 1/2 years.

  42. Max-1 Says:

Oops, That should be #35, not 5

Or maybe Senator Ethics Problems Stevens(R-Ak)

It seems now-a-days, you’re a nobody from Alaska if you don’t have an Ethics Investigation going on you… NO?

OMG! What a bunch of crap this guy spews! Grandpa needs to go take a nap. That stupid pipeline hasn’t had a shovel of dirt dug yet, may never in the future, at minimum won’t produce for years, and she’s proposed that the state of Alaska will match millions of dollars in funds for a deal that is not even certain? Planet McMoron is calling, please beam up!

  45. osage Says:

Should Ms. Palin become VP, who is going to be with her special needs infant from 6AM until at least 6PM? Will her baby be awake when she gets home? How many hours a day will she be available to nurture her child? Will Mr. Palin be traveling with his wife or is he going to become a full-time stay-at-home parent? Will nannies raise her child? Which role will be her priority, VP or mother? Will she take her baby with her everywhere she goes? How is her special needs child going to get the special attention she’ll need? Perhaps my idea of what the emotional needs of children are is an old-fashioned one, but it is my belief, based on loving and raising three children, that there will be many, many instances when her “job” as VP will have to take precedence over being a mother. In this day and age, it may not seem fair to imply that a woman can’t have a job and still be a good mother, but the reality is that any man or woman who has a newborn special needs child will confront the unfair but real choice of being at work or being there for their child. And anyone who believes in that “quality time” rationalization is full of it! I don’t care what anyone believes, the time you don’t spend with your child is time that you and your child can never get back. You lose it and your child loses it forever. And that is undeniably the choice a working parent makes no matter how unfair it might seem. Parents and children only have one life, and the most valuable gift parents can give their children is their time, which is life’s most precious and most fleeting finite commodity.

  46. Bob Says:

Anyone who has spent any time in ‘energy’, petroleum engineering, chemical engineering, oil&gas, environmental engineering, etc., should be very offended at the very least. Of all the bs, this gets me the most because it is so demeaning to those that have actually studied it. What, not even an engineering degree or experience in the field? About the time this barbie doll was losing a beauty contest, I was doing feasibility studies on Enhanced Oil Recovery Methods and Heavy Oil Production and Refining in California and Alaska. There is no doubt that I have more expertise than this phony ticket, and it’s really piiissing me off.

  49. The Shadow Says:

Oh yeah, that’s right, enery is the new foreign policy qualifier. What’s sad about this crap is the media eating it up. Apparently that aren’t any smarter than McCain is. Who moron would except that as a qualification for any job. I guess I could say I know about animals so I should be the head of Microsoft. Or I know about boats, so I can run Toyota. Come on tell me the media isn’t that stupid?

  50. shoeless Says:

Here’s an interesting tidbit from the NY Times article linked in post #48.

Indeed, last month the state sought to pull 44 of Exxon’s leases at Point Thomson, arguing that the company had not moved on any of its nearly two dozen plans submitted over the years to develop the area, and that the last well Exxon drilled there was in the early 1980s, Mr. Irwin said.

Why do they want to drill in ANWR if they won’t drill on their own leases?

  51. The Shadow Says:

What am I talking about, I meant to say: Tell me the American people aren’t that stupid. But I know the answer to that, who do you think elected Bush twice and are about to election a 72 old fart who has had cancer four times and pick a complete idiot as his running mate.

  52. Paul W Says:

McCain: Palin Has National Security Experience Because She Knows About ‘Energy’.

If her so called energy experience translates to national security, why then does Palin advocate for more drilling, the least likely way to reduce dependence on foreign oil?

  53. Wayne Says:

    The Shadow Says:
Come on tell me the media isn’t that stupid?

It isn’t. But the Corporate Owned media thinks you/we are that stupid.

  56. MapleStreet Says:

Correction - she knows about selling Energy drilled from Alaska. Living in Alaska doesn’t make her know more of the big picture.

[Dare I then connect her beauty queen status, drilling in Alaska, and the scandal in the Dept of Interior ?]

  57. Bullsmith Says:

So obviously he needs a sci fi writer from Denver to head up NASA. After all Denvwer is the closest American city to space, and knowing all about possible alien life forms is an essential part of space exploration.

Joking aside, these are the same people who claimed to be so very serious about national security that John Kerry, for instance, couldn’t be trusted to keep America safe. Now if you’ve ever had anything to do with the oil business, that’s good enough.

    Country first, my ass.

  58. Shayne Says:

Well since the Russians are hanging out somewhere down in South or Central America she must know less about them than we do.

  59. Innocent Bystander Says:

“She knows more about energy than probably anyone else in the United States of America”

This statement should be easy to test. The media, whenever they someday get the opportunity to actually ask her questions, ought to ask some basic technical questions about energy policy. When she proves that she is ignorant, Obama should use McCain’s statement and her response in a video ad.

  60. Shayne Says:

She has an 80% approval rating. Of course she bought and paid for it but where did that come from. The cost of a barrel of oil or the PORK BARREL she gets which is higher per capita than the rest of the country. In Illinois it’s around $30 per person. I can’t remember what Alaska received but I think it’s about $250.

Yup and John McCain knows how to win wars. John McCain knows how to catch Osama Bin Laden. John McCain knows how to fix our economy. John McCain knows how to fix our healthcare system.

John McCain and Vampyra of the North know a lot about nothing!

  63. DieNowForPeace Says:

“I’m John McCain and I approve this message”.

    Send this to EVERYONE.

    NOW.

  64. Uncle Fester Lurks Says:

Okay what is wrong with this statement?

John McCain: Palin Has National Security Experience Because She Knows About Energy.

Was it foreign oil terrorists or energy terrorists who attacked us on 9/11? Is Alaska a hot bed of terrorist groups who want to kill us? Damn those brown skinned Eskimoes!

She has national security experience because she knows about energy? Has anyone ever heard such an empty, foolish endorsement of someone elses credentials before?

Hell Sarah Palin doesn’t even know what her children are doing but she knows about energy so that makes her an expert.

Why sure Sarah knows about energy. She knows if you turn the light switch on the bulb will light up. She knows if she plugs her boom box into the wall outlet, she will hear christian rap music pounding from the speakers.

  65. daveincolorado Says:

but this is typical republican playbook stuff - repeat something -anything!! - enough times and first the media, then the low information voters begin to believe it. Doesn’t matter that it makes no sense what so ever, just keep repeating it and repeating it. Dumb, dumb, dumb. ENOUGH!!!!

  66. zuch Says:

[McInsane]: She knows more about energy than probably anyone else in the United States of America.”

Wow. We’ve got a frickin’ geenyus on our hands, ready to lead the free world. I’m sooooo reassured. With any luck (and the fervent prayers of the Rethuglican RW for a timely demise of the old coot, this geenyus (that knows her paleontology and civics too) will be running the whole shebang….

    Cheers,

  67. fletc3her Says:

I’m laughing out loud here. She knows more about energy than … ANYBODY! Oh lord, why do people take this clown seriously?

  68. Bilbo Hussein Baggins Says:

The only “energy” Palin knows anything about is oil. And all she knows about that is how to tax the oil companies in Alaska so that she can give an extra $1,200 to every citizen in Alaska. Of course we all know that the oil industry will pass on that tax amount to us, the consumers. So, every time I fill my tank in Corvallis, Oregon, I will think about how I am contributing to that extra $1,200 that will go to every person in Alaska. BTW, this is why Alaskans like Sarah Palin. She is basically bribing them. Every person in Alaska will receive, on Friday, a check for $3,400. Now, that’s every person, not every household. Wouldn’t you like to be able to receive that on a yearly basis?

  69. zuch Says:

    #2 Guido the Loving OBGYN:

    lol
Why isn’t McCain 20 points behind in polling?

On my blog, I’ve been asking why McInsane’s polling anything above 5%. Which is a very good question.

    Cheers,

  70. lurker Says:

So Sarha’s household gets $23,800 tax free?

  71. zuch Says:

Palin instituted what amounts to a windfall profits tax in the state of Alaska.

Oh. Palin raised taxes?!?!? Handy to know….

Do let us know when she makes a windfall profits tax a platform issue on the national level….

    Cheers,

  72. stateofthedivision Says:

Did you note the kindergarden like list of she’s right, Obama’s wrong lines? McCon looked like he wanted to come through the video feed and choke Rob. But John was shifty.

    #1. National Security, major weakness
    #2. Energy, not as weak

When asked about #1, offer up #2. The problem is Sarah isn’t an expert in Alaskan energy. Such a person could name the size of the Exxon Valdez oil spill off the top of their head.

Sarah told CSPAN’s Washington Journal the spill was 11,000 gallons of fuel, when it was 10.8 million gallons of crude. Mistake or oil company talking point? I hope Rob Caldwell gets the chance to ask her. Charlie Gibson surely won’t.

  73. DavidHart Says:

    Guido:

I don’t think that the polls are biased. I think that they are becoming increasingly flawed. A large chunk of Obama support comes from those who are 18 to 24 years of age. That group is more likely to be cell phone only. Furthermore, I suspect that group is more likely to pass unknown callers to voice mail.

That said, Palin’s “apparent” support is based on two things. 1. She is an Evangelical and; 2. She read a speech well that she did not write. People are free to make certain assumptions about Evangelical Christians. I seem to recall that a certain prominent Senator once said that they are “agents of intolerance.”

Anyone who believes the whisper campaign that Obama is a Muslim probably wasn’t going to vote for him anyway. What really scares me though is that the polls probably have a 5% to 7% bias in Obama’s favor - “the Bradley effect.”

  74. Rich H Says:

If this woman knows anything, and I mean anything, we should be able to ask her about it.

  75. southrnbelle Says:

Yea, John, I know about energy, too.

I pay $3.85 a gallon for gas and my monthly electricity bill is over $400 for my 10-year-old daughter and me living in a medium sized 3-bedroom apartment!!!!!!!!!!

    WHAT AN IDIOT!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  76. Proud American Liberal Says:

I was right! I made a prediction when it was revealed that the McCain campaign was keeping Palin away from the microphone. I said that if they did that, McCain would be out front, fully exposed, and it wouldn’t be long before he self-destructed. And it’s underway. Everytime he opens his mouth, he sticks his foot in deeper.
