Flashback: Last year, McCain politicized 9/11 by launching pro-Iraq war tour.

Sens. John McCain (R-AZ) and Barack Obama (D-IL) have both suspended their campaigns today in honor of 9/11. Today “is not a day for politics,” a McCain spokesman said. Last year, however, McCain was unapologetic about using 9/11 to boost his presidential bid, using the day to launch his pro-Iraq war “No Surrender” tour. From his remarks at last year’s rally on 9/11:

I can’t think of a better way to remember and revere their memories and prevent further tragedies and attacks on the United States than to rally support for what Gen. Petraeus in his testimony today (said) was now the central battlefield in the war against terror, Iraq.

McCain still frequently makes references to the stunt during campaign events. Watch clips from McCain’s politicized 9/11 rally here.

I can’t think of a better way to remember and revere their memories and prevent further tragedies and attacks on the United States than to simply shut the f@ck up!

  5. DieNowForPeace says:

This “Iraq=9/11″ meme is reminiscent someone trying to shove a square peg in a round hole and too dumb to figure that it will NEVER fit.

  6. Uncle Ho says:

    The Rethuglic party politicized 9/11?

    I’m shocked. Absolutely shocked.

    snark

  7. cmac says:

I find it disgusting that the Republican Party has appropriated 9/11 for political gain, just as they did with their ‘values,’ ‘religion,’ and ‘patriotism’ heists. They are offensive in such deep and grating ways that they inspire loathing; and that’s a dangerous game to be playing at a time when recession, climate change, and world unrest loom.

  8. paleolib says:

So there is no better way to honor the victims of 9/11 than by promoting your agenda in the occupation of a country that had no role in the planning or execution of the attack? You don’t need to show me your membership card Mr. McCain. Your “logic” betrays you as a Republican.

  9. DidHeJustSayThat says:

The upsetting part is that Petraeus had never said Iraq was “the central battlefield in the war against terror, Iraq.”

He clearly said this was Osama bin Laden’s view on the war against the west, concluding this from actions and communications from Al Qaeda. McCain turned this statement into Petraeus’. It is ridiculous he was allowed to get away with it.

McCain and Palin are LIARS, HYPOCRITES and FRAUDS.

  11. Idyll says:

OT, but I just heard on my way home that registered Democrats in Wisconsin have been receiving absentee ballots, ostensibly from John McCain. But the address where they’re instructed to send them is to a city no one’s ever heard of. (Mayville)

  12. Leftside Annie says:

Today – more than ever – I hate these people. I hold the Republican Party responsible for everything that is wrong in America and for most of what is wrong in the world.

How dare they presume to speak for me??

  13. Leftside Annie says:

HEY, JOHN McCAIN —- WHERE IS OSAMA BIN LADEN?????

  14. Uncle Ho says:

    Idyll; can you say ‘caging’?

    Iraq NEVER attacked America…
    >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

Actually they DID. In 1987 Iraq attacked the USS Stark. They hit it with an exocet missile. Raygun fell all over himself making appologies for Saddam who was our GUY back then and excepted his half hearted appology immediatly.

Iraq NEVER posed an imminent threat to America…
    >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

    Absolutely 100% true

    EugeneDebs,
Using parsing points one can deduce that 9/11 WAS an inside job then… NO?

    Got Tim Osman?
