During her much anticipated interview with ABC’s Charles Gibson, Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin had a “deer-in-headlights moment” when Gibson asked her if she agreed with the Bush Doctrine. Surprised at the question, Palin asked Gibson what he meant. When Gibson asked, “Well, what do you interpret it to be?” Palin replied inquisitively, “His worldview?” Gibson then explained his understanding of the Bush Doctrine and asked if Palin agreed:
GIBSON: The Bush doctrine as I understand it is that we have the right of anticipatory self-defense and we have the right of preemptive strike against any country we think is going to attack us. Do you agree with that?
PALIN: Charlie, if there is legitimate and enough intelligence that tells us that a strike is imminent against American people, we have every right to defend our country.

While Gibson did not get the Bush Doctrine wholly correct, he was at least on the right track. In fact, the Bush Doctrine is predicated on “preventive war” not “preemptive war” — a sharp distinction in which the former justifies launching war in an attempt to “prevent” a threat from emerging (i.e. the Iraq war), while in the latter case, the threat has already materialized.
“Preemptive war” is, as Sen. Edward Kennedy (D-MA) once observed, something “the global community is generally tolerant of,” while “preventive attacks” — a policy that Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) has not rejected — “have generally been condemned.”
Indeed, as Matt Yglesias notes, Bush and McCain agree that the U.S. has “the right to use military force unilaterally even where there isn’t an imminent threat” and that “Palin’s view is sensible, so it would be interesting to learn her opinion of her running mate’s much less sensible view.”

It’s frustrating to have it framed as if anyone would deny that. Of coarse we have the right to self-defense, that isn’t the question. Iraq was never an imminent threat to the US, and we had no justification for war with Iraq no matter what adjective you put before it.

The US national security policy of preventive, in addition to preemptive, war has been posted on the White House website for years and has been hotly debated for years, at least among some of us. Whether Gibson is ignorant of this distinction or not doesn’t matter much, anyway, since he takes all her answers at face value and moves on. I guess that’s the “deference” that the campaign demands.

September 11th, 2008 at 10:47 pmI tried to be as objective as possible while watching that, and I am unimpressed. Her depth of knowledge on the topics was clearly lacking. She always tried to bring every comment into her comfort zone. Not that it is any fault of her own, but the setting was not exactly favorable. She looked tiny next to Gibson. Her slouch made her seem submissive, and I thought Gibson’s questioning was somewhat condescending. Not that he was condescending in his approach, but the fact that he felt compelled to ask her if she hesitated to agree to run is not insignificant. If I were ever asked if I was qualified for a job during an interview, I would not like my chances. Overall, she just seemed naive, while trying to put up a strong front. Which is about what I think she is.
On top of that, I wasn’t so concerned about the Georgia comment, because I think that was a bit of an “if they were in NATO” scenario which would be different than a repeat of the recent events in Russia/Georgia. I was much more disturbed by the refusal to second guess Israel. If you fail to second guess your friends or even yourself, you are destined to repeat mistakes. This mindless “loyalty” is really just stupidity. She is the type of person that does something stupid while they are drunk and expects their friends to get thrown in jail for defending them. Also, she is probably right about previous VPs meeting foreign leaders, but there is this little thing called the airplane that hasn’t exactly been around all that long. Didn’t FDR even travel by water to meet with Churchill?

Exactly! Only someone like Darth Cheney would enjoy the thought of a war with Russia, all while watching the holocaust safely from his bunker. Or, if the American people are stupid enough (yet again), soon to be Palin’s bunker.
Is diplomacy dead? Diplomacy is what kept the Cold War from becoming a Hot War. Russia is every bit as powerful as the United States. They have as many (if not more) nuclear weapons than the U.S. does. The Russian people defeated Hitler’s Operation Barbarossa, the largest single invasion in the history of mankind. If we were crazy enough to start a war with the Russians, what kind of war would it be? Nuclear? If conventional, then it’s assumed we’ll be fighting in and around Georgia and the Black Sea. This would be on Russia’s “home turf”, where historically they have always been at their best in battle. The U.S. military is already overstretched and war-fatigued as it is, due to Chimpy’s mess in Iraq & Afganistan.
Just the mere thought of war with Russia is bad, bad, very bad. Too bad Sarah Palin’s brain doesn’t match her looks.

It is scary how Bush-like Palin really is.
Indeed, this debate is good because the spin has been that the Bush Doctrine is about pre-emptive war when it actually about preventive war. “Preventive” is what maks this different from the previous Doctrine (which was pre-emptive). Gibson was sloppy on this point.
