In her interview with ABC News’s Charlie Gibson last night, Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin denied that she had ever said climate change isn’t caused by human activity, challenging Gibson to show her where she had made such claims. In a fact-check segment on Good Morning America today, Jake Tapper demonstrated that Palin was making a false claim, pointing to a December 4, 2007 Fairbanks Daily News-Miner article in which she was quoted as saying, “I’m not an Al Gore, doom-and-gloom environmentalist blaming the changes in our climate on human activity.” Watch it:
On his blog, Tapper also points out that Palin told Newsmax in August that she is “not one though who would attribute it to being man-made.”
More on Palin’s positions in The Sarah Palin Digest.
Jake Tapper demonstrated that Palin was making a false claim
Geeze, when are they going to start calling a lie a lie? Where did this ban on saying the words “lie” or “liar” come from?
September 12th, 2008 at 10:06 amI think she was wearing a lovely shade of Mauve lipstick at that time.
September 12th, 2008 at 10:09 ambut, but, but if she winks, then it’s all ok.
September 12th, 2008 at 10:10 amWhen does she show us her tits?
September 12th, 2008 at 10:14 amNote the way she tiptoes around it – “I’m not going to disagree with the point that they make, that man’s activities can be attributed to changes.”
So she’s not saying she believes climate change is caused by human activity, or even that huamn activity is a contributing factor. She’s saying that climate scientists might kinda sorta have a point and they’re entitled to think what they like, and that there’s maybe a little bit of change that some human activity is affecting the climate somehow.
It’s no change from her position at all. She’s hemming and hawing and hedging and framing all of climate science in a giant sea of doubt. It’s the ExxonMobil/Petroleum Institute strategy.
September 12th, 2008 at 10:15 amThe image that comes to mind is the idioti at the RNC convention mindlessly cheering this raving, lying sack of bullsh*t..in lipstick.
And those $400.00 Palin glasses? They only let you see out of the right eye, skewing your view and trashing any hope of depth perception; Doubtless, the right-wing ’sucker-moms’ are lining up, waving their cash for their brush with glamour.
September 12th, 2008 at 10:16 amshe’s got the lying
part down.

September 12th, 2008 at 10:21 amNow she`s got the flipflopping down………
September 12th, 2008 at 10:24 amIf people watch Good Morning America for their daily news then we as a nation are screwed. Has this been shown on CNN, Fox News (I know the answer to that one) or MSNBC?
When will the media come out and call her a lair? For the love of all those things that are holy, call her on her lies Main Stream Media…do your freaking job…..please.
September 12th, 2008 at 10:25 amYou CAN put lipstick on a liar. She is.
September 12th, 2008 at 10:25 amOh, and as a side observation: Palin does that annoying “Management 101″ device of constantly repeating “Charlie” during her answers in the interview.
What a tool.
September 12th, 2008 at 10:26 amlol, I see that the trolls are at least now making their names more accurate.
the right wing is most definitely FOR the progress of idiots.
September 12th, 2008 at 10:26 am“I believe in science, and have such great respect for what they [the scientists] are telling us. I’m not going to disagree with the point that they make: that man’s activities can be attributed to – changes.”
Sarah Palin in an ABC interview with Charles Gibson
Read that again, out loud—or listen to her do so by replaying the clip—and pay close attention. She actually gets it exactly BACKWARD, essentially ‘agreeing’ that global warming is causing changes in man’s activities. What the hell?
She cannot even clear express her denial of her previous claims that there is no connection between human activity and global warming. She manages to reverse the denial, flipping the causal link. Seriously: how ignorant, woefully unprepared and inappropriately expressive could anyone possibly be?
September 12th, 2008 at 10:29 amThe rose-colored tint on the glasses her supporters are wearing is so dark that they won’t be bothered by the glaring inexperience and lack of knowledge.
September 12th, 2008 at 10:29 amSarah Palin isn’t Hillary Clinton.
When you contrast the two on the issues that matter most, you’ll discover how far apart they are on the ideological scale.
Sarah Palin is on the wrong side of the issues that matter most to women in this election.
Learn the difference, vote smart.

IdiotProgress Says:
You condemn others for idiotic comments with an idiotic comment of your own……got anything to say or just here to disparage others?
September 12th, 2008 at 10:35 amPalin has so much going for her, like tits.
Face it Regressive, it’s THE ONLY REASON the GOP picked her, to distract the idiotic, knuckle draggin, mouth-breathing Repuke men with weak hearts and even weaker minds.
Seriously, what man doesn’t want to see those knockers?
It’s all she has to offer me.
September 12th, 2008 at 10:40 am12. IdiotProgress Says: Another trashy blogger saying idiotic things.
Awww, IdiotPee is wrong again:
So, as P.T. Barnum eluded, there is no shortage of insecure dopes who gain their identity from the teevee; that apparently goes exponentially for RNC rubes. No Soup For You, IdiotPee, but I’m sure you’re consoled by that stylish pair of glasses you just purchased…
September 12th, 2008 at 10:44 amBoy, I sure hope that KO is getting paid a lot of money cuz he’s gonna need it.
September 12th, 2008 at 11:06 amI laughed when Colbert pointed out that the truth has a liberal bias. The wingers apparently took him so seriously that they have developed an allergy to reality.
September 12th, 2008 at 11:17 amIs there another word or phrase that captures the essence of
‘false claim’?
Perhaps a four letter word that rhymes with fire?
September 12th, 2008 at 11:21 amGiving her children lessons in lying.
September 12th, 2008 at 11:22 amAs I recall, Arnold as the Terminator made Gargoyle shades a big hit…
September 12th, 2008 at 11:22 amPerhaps Ms Palin’s termination of candidacy will be a real splash for those $400 a pop suckers…
Exactly, Bob.
I’ve made this point before here; Sarah Palin’s chief value to the McSame campaign is that people don’t know her. Thus, the rabid right wing, so attuned to authoritarian hero-worship, will attribute all of their fondest desires in a candiddate to her.
It’s exactly like when you first meet someone to whom you’re attracted. You don’t know much about them, so you fill in the blanks with assumptions that you’d like to be true; she loves sports, for instance, or she likes the same foods as you do. Or she’s kind to animals. Whatever. Then, as you get to know her more, some of those illusions crumble into dust. Maybe she likes Greek food, not Chinese. Maybe she tries to run over squirrels in the road.
In any case, the McSame campaign is trying desperately to extend that “meet cute” phase as long as possible. Until the election, if they can manage it.
September 12th, 2008 at 11:28 amTP: You took the bait!
All Palin all the time and progressives lose this election. This is about McCain v. Obama not Palin v.Obama. Instead of the economy and the misadventure in Iraq, we are looking for Sarah-got-yas. She’s an easy target and maybe that’s the point.
As Rachel Maddow pointed out last night, On September 12, 2001 McCain was talking about going after Iraq on the Chris Matthews show!
September 12th, 2008 at 11:30 amIt’s important that the truth be known about this woman. the maim stream media will not do thier job and so it is up to us.
You seem to think this game is over…..I hate to tell you this but we are only in the first quarter….hang on, it’s going to get rough for mccain.
Obama is obviously not John Kerry. He is running an intelligent campaign and you will see changes when the debates and adds start to really fly.
mccain has already shown that he has nothing except to run down Obama’s ambitious plans for America. mccain offers nothing except more financial problems and war.
September 12th, 2008 at 11:37 amBy this statement I did not mean John was not a good man and far more qualified than bush who he ran against, I just think that John and Al Gore both took too much for granted that the American people would seek out the truth and make their decision based on those facts……Americans are gullible and I think this has been well demonstrated, something Obama is fully aware of and has taken into consideration for this election cycle.
September 12th, 2008 at 11:44 amI wonder when Republicans are going to learn we have recording devices. Really it’s shocking, this interview is not only a lot of fluff but these lies.
September 12th, 2008 at 12:05 pmWhoops! She got burnt by ABC. But, but, but, she changed her mind and she thinks science is real as well as creationism and god. I’m confused?
September 12th, 2008 at 12:13 pm.
Dear Sarah,
So that isn’t global warming I have coming out my @ss?
.
September 12th, 2008 at 1:03 pmI’m not sure whether I should be more upset about her lies and flip-flopping, or that her party thinks I’m dumb enough to not catch it.
September 12th, 2008 at 10:22 pmTranscript:
GIBSON: Do you still believe that global warming is not man made?
PALIN: I believe that man’s activities certainly can be contributing to the issue of global warming, climate change…regardless, though, of the reason for climate change, whether it’s entirely, WHOLLY caused by man’s activities, or is part of the cyclical nature of our planet, the warming and the cooling trends, regardless of that, John McCain and I agree that we’ve gotta do something about it, and we have to make sure that we’re doing all we can to cut down on pollution.”
GIBSON: But it’s a critical point, as to whether or not this is MAN-MADE. He’s said it is, you have said in the past it’s not.
PALIN: The debate on that even really has evolved into: “OK, here’s where we are now.” Scientists do show us that there are changes in climate. Things are getting warmer. Now, what do we do about it? And John McCain and I are going to be working on what we do about it.
GIBSON: Yes, but it’s…isn’t it critical as to whether or not it’s man made? Because what you do about it depends on whether it’s man made.
PALIN: That’s why I’m attributing some of man’s activities to potentially causing some of the changes in the climate right now.
GIBSON: But I…call me a cynic, but I hear a little bit of change in your policy there, when you say yes, now, you’re beginning to see it IS man made. Sounds to me like you’re adapting your position to Senator McCain’s.
PALIN: I think you are a cynic. Show me where I’ve ever said that there’s absolute proof that nothing that man has ever conducted or engaged in has had any effect, or no effect, on climate change.
Gov. Palin is absolutely right on this one. Gibson’s entire line of questioning, based on a false and simplistic “man made/not man made” dichotomy, betrays that he’s not at all familiar with the debate. Key points:
1. It is almost universally conceded that the earth’s climate changes from time to time. The earth’s average temperature has, in times past, been much colder (and also much warmer) than it is now.
2. It is almost universally conceded that the earth’s climate is affected, to at least some degree, by one or more human activities.
3. It is almost universally conceded that the earth’s climate is affected, to at least some degree, by one or more naturally-occurring phenomena.
The debate over global warming climate change is not over whether, on the one hand, man-made effects impact the climate or, on the other hand, natural phenomena impact the climate. As Palin tries, patiently but unsuccessfully, to explain to Gibson, there is some reason to believe that both factors have some effect.
To put it another way, the debate over global warming climate change rages over the relative weight, not the existence, of (2) and (3) above. The proponents of anthropogenic global warming climate change theory argue that human activity has a heavy impact on the earth’s climate (i.e., a more substantial effect than natural phenomena). Skeptics of the theory argue that the impact of anthropogenic effects is dwarfed by the effect of naturally-occuring phenomena (e.g., the level of incident radiation on the planet’s surface).
Despite Algore’s confident pronouncements, the debate is not even close to being over. In fact, the skeptics appear to have the objective science on their side, while the anthropogenic global warming climate change brownshirts resort to doctoring their numbers and bullying heretics.
With her clear statements above, Gov. Palin has identified herself as a skeptic of the anthropogenic theory, and backed it up with a solid explanation for her position. As you can see, Gibson’s attempt at another “gotcha” fell completely flat, as he was unprepared, unfamiliar with the background and way out of his league on the subject matter.
