Palin Backs Off Bridge To Nowhere Lie, Admits She Supported ‘Infrastructure Being Built In The State’

During her interview with ABC’s Charlie Gibson tonight, Gov. Sarah Palin (R-AK) seemed to admit that she has repeatedly lied to the American public. Palin has repeatedly claimed that she had said, “Thanks, but no thanks” to Congress for money to build the infamous Bridge to Nowhere.

Tonight, Palin did not object as Gibson explained that “it’s now pretty clearly documented that you supported that bridge before you opposed it.” She defended the earmarking process saying, “It’s not inappropriate for a mayor or for a governor to…plug into the federal budget”:

GIBSON: But it’s now pretty clearly documented. You supported that bridge before you opposed it. You were wearing a t-shirt in the 2006 campaign, showed your support for the bridge to nowhere.

But you turned against it after Congress had basically pulled the plug on it. [...]

PALIN: I was for infrastructure being built in the state. And it’s not inappropriate for a mayor or for a governor to request and to work with their Congress — their congressmen, their congresswomen, to plug into the federal budget along with every other state a share of the federal budget for infrastructure.

What I supported was the link between a community and its airport. And we have found that link now.

Watch it:

As ThinkProgress has documented, Palin was a strong backer of the project and expressed her desire to renew federal funding for the project on several occasions.

According a ThinkProgress count, Palin and the McCain campaign have repeated the Bridge to Nowhere lie 31 times since August 31, when McCain first announced his pick. Palin repeated the lie herself 8 times to both national audiences and at smaller campaign stops.

Will Palin apologize for having misled the public?

Yes, a community of 50 people and its $300 million airport!

I have my fingers crossed that Charlie asks her what she did with the earmark money.

Let the American people know, dear Sarah, that you kept it anyway, to spend on your own pet projects, like the road to nowhere that was built despite the bridge to nowhere being nixed.

I can’t say it often enough: Palin kept the ph*ucking $233 million dollars anyway!

McCain blasts Obama for money requested for Illinois, but per resident—Palin requested 25 times as much for residents of Alaska. Under her, Alaska leads nation in earmarks per resident. It received $1.84 from federal government for every dollar paid. California receives $0.78 for every dollar paid.

2005 Alaska paid $5,434 fed taxes per resident and received $13,950 per resident from federal government.

  7. Nat says:

No. Her state wants more than its share. Alaska gets almost two dollars in federal funding for every dollar it sends to the federal government. She also pilfered 27 million dollars in earmarks from the federal government for a town in which 1100 people vote. There is no way in hell Wasilla sent anywhere near that to the federal government.

  9. tom says:

I loved her line about “since I am being an open book about myself”. What a crock! Virtually all she has to talk about is herself and her little life in her little bubble in Alaska. She sure can’t talk about foreign policy, education policy, social policy, economic policy or military policy.

She is still the self-absorbed Pentacostal Pork-barrel Princess of Wasilla as far as I am concerned. And it is good that she is being exposed to the American public. The hard right will fall out of love with her and she will quickly wear thin for the rest of us.

She is a mealy-mouthed political opportunist who will be one of several millstones hanging around McNumbNuts’ neck by the time election day rolls around.

I still believe that Obama is going to play this election like a basketball game. He has an excellent team on the court. He has more fans in the stands and home-court advantage. He knows when to bring it and he knows how to bring it. The ancient shooting guard who can’t raise his arms above his shoulders and his smarmy little cheerleader are no match for him.

You are, politely put, a loser, and it is very sad that many clueless Repubs are willing to vote you into office, even though they dislike you & know you are completely unprepared for this job. That says so much for Repubs- willing to sacrifice country for greed & false politics. It’s truly time for Repubs, their lies, their mindless attacks, their worship of anti-Americans, to stop right now. The whole world is sick of the Republican bullying, lies, & false attacks. Repubs need to stop being childish tantrum-throwers & grow up– maybe they could actually talk about their issues & policies? Don’t hold your breath!!

This is all so confusing , maybe we can all call into to Fuch snoose and ask Bill O really to clarify this for us.

  24. spencers mom says:

    Here’s my beef:

Alaska has no income tax, and no state sales tax (there is some local sales tax, such as the one in Wasilla that Palin raised a half percent to 2.5% to pay for her legacy ice sports center).

BUT, they get nearly twice as much money from the Feds as they pay.

AND, they get huge checks each year for every man, woman and child from the state oil revenues, and those checks went up by $1200 per head this year because of Palin’s windfall profits tax on her state’s Big Oil, which had windfalls because they price gouged the rest of us!

Alaska is beyond a welfare state. It is organized crime.

To be fair, I’m blaming it all on Palin, but she can’t run as the maverick reformer when she porked up the pork, not the other way around.

  30. tom says:

Agreed, spencers mom. There is an American value at stake here that republicans never talk about — fairness and equity. Alaska is at least two standard deviations outside the normal range of distribution by any measure of fairness and equity.

This is what makes all of Failin’ Palin’s pronouncements so utterly ridiculous. She hasn’t “reformed” her welfare state. She has just rearranged the deck chairs and elbowed a couple of fellow public officials away from the trough that she still feeds at.

  31. spencers mom says:

McStain and Palin remind me of a late night infomercial.

They’re selling some new gizmo or diet plan, promising something never seen before, with all kinds of “testimonials” and rave reviews. Most know is a scam, but threre is still a huge segment of the population who will buy into the scam and fork over money that they can’t afford for a product that will certainly fail to deliver as promised.

Unfortunately, our election system doesn’t come with “money back guarantee” and we’ve clearly seen that the current congress won’t investigate the fraud and criminal activity and bring the liars to justice.

  34. tom says:

Here’s another point to be made on the welfare state thing:

Toddy and Princess Sarah have five kids — 7 x $3,200 = $22,400. Princess Sarah’s salary is $125,000 per year and let’s assume that the average state sales tax is 3 percent . . . that’s $3,750. Between the per diems she has charged for staying in her own home and for questionable travel and expenses of her husband and children, she has skimmed another $60,000 or so.

In other words, she is a “welfare queen” who gets more than $86,000 per year just by virtue of the number of kids she has and where she lives. I doubt that her situation is very “relatable” by the standards of most lower or middle class Americans.

    From buzzflash.com by Meg White:

She offered a $150 incentive in taxpayer money to hunters who, after they’d killed a wolf, hacked off the front left leg of the animal as proof. The aerial shooters land their planes and helicopters, walk up to the wolves and hack off the front left paw to receive $150 in taxpayer money for each one turned in!

She ignored the 172 scientists who told her point blank that the numbers the state came up with for optimal moose population were unsustainably high, and dismissed their request for an even-handed conservation policy. She refused to provide evidence that the program even worked to raise the moose population. Instead, she approved a $400,000 state-funded advertising campaign that praised the success of the wolf culling program just three weeks before a public referendum vote on the matter.

These people lie through their teeth with impunity. You can confront them with blatant contradictions in what they do and say and they just shrug it off and continue spinning like a top.

  81. tom says:

    Snark-Fest

“It’s autumn in New York. The leaves are falling. Earlier today, John McCain admitted he doesn’t know how many rakes he owns.”
    —David Letterman

“There are only 56 days until the election. I saw that they’re selling Sarah Palin action figures. Sad incident at Toys R Us today—a Sarah Palin doll shot My Little Pony.”
    —Jimmy Kimmel

“Well, it’s a very strange political campaign. I mean, out on the campaign trail, John McCain and Sarah Palin are talking about how they stood up to the Republican party, they fought the Republican establishment, and they battled Republicans. Their message: vote Republican.”
    —Jay Leno

“Sarah Palin has been getting briefed on what she needs to know to be John McCain’s vice president. The first thing they taught her was CPR.”
    —Conan O’Brien

“New Rule: Republicans must stop saying Obama is an elitist and just admit you don’t like him because of something he can’t help, something that’s a result of the way he was born. Admit it—you’re not voting for him because he’s smarter than you.”
    —Bill Maher

And the funniest line of the week:

“[Sarah Palin] knows more about energy than probably anyone else in the United States of America. … And, uh, she also happens to represent, be governor of a state that’s right next to Russia.”
—John McCain on Palin’s foreign policy experience

  82. Marie says:

Hot off the wire from the Cincinnati Enquirer:

About one-third of the absentee ballot applications received at the Hamilton County Board of Elections have been ruled invalid because Republican Sen. John McCain’s presidential campaign printed a version of the form with an extra, unneeded box on it.

It turns out the problem is that the McCain campaign added a box on these forms that required you to check it to confirm you were an eligible voter. Yep, that’s right- check here if you are eligible to vote. I guess the act of actually requesting an absentee ballot doesn’t qualify that. And if you don’t check it…

… bingo. You get the picture. And the McCain campaign has sent out over a MILLION of these forms. The State of Ohio and the local election boards, understandably, don’t want to pay to fix the mistake on this.

Over seven-hundred and fifty absentee applications have been rejected so far. If we’re counting on absentee and early voting to help us mobilize our GOTV effort, then this is a clear and present danger to it.

  83. tom says:

Here’s the biggest “break” that McNumbNuts has made with the party of GDumbya.

Confronted with the fact that GDumbya is an inarticulate, drunken boob, the republicans have asked that we all overlook his “form” because of the “substance” of the man (I guess they’re referring to his resolve and compassion — bleck!).

Now, the Pentacostal Pork-barrel Princess of Wasilla springs onto the scene. McNumbNuts’ cynical, desperate, poorly-vetted VP selection is a know-nothing novice political opportunist but she’s got boobs. So McNumbNuts asks us to overlook her lack of “substance” because of her “form”.

  84. MapleStreet says:

To summarize the Straight Talk Express. McCain is against lobbyists – so his campaign staff is mainly lobbyists. He’s anti-K street but his congressional aides has all done so much good for lobbyists that they are running to K street in the droves.

Palin is anti-earmark but her state gets $2 back for every 1 they send to the feds.

Why do you lib-rals not bless the ground that these saints walk on. So Selfishly acting against their interests !

  85. MapleStreet says:

87 Marie: Since when do the States abrogate their responsibilty and let the very biased candidates print their forms ?

Is the next step a ballot where you can only check McCain and nothing else ?

  86. hanshiro says:

Remember: You can’t have “appalling” without “palin.”

  87. hanshiro says:

I must admit, the McCain-Palin Comedy Tour is an entertaining diversion during the Daily Show’s rerun week…

So looking forward to Stewart and Colbert’s recap!

  94. ForTruth says:

The good part in all this is America is learning about the Alaskan gravy train regarding Federal funding. We are seeing how much tax dollars go to Alaska in proportion to the number of people who live there.

  95. MrSquirrel says:

Just once, I would like to see it go like this:

GIBSON: But it’s now pretty clearly documented. You supported that bridge before you opposed it. You were wearing a t-shirt in the 2006 campaign, showed your support for the bridge to nowhere.

But you turned against it after Congress had basically pulled the plug on it. […]

GIBSON: Yes, okay… but that doesn’t explain why you lied openly and repeatedly about, until it was shown otherwise. Was it inappropriate to lie shamelessly to the American voters that way? Were you hoping to play on their ignorance, or what exactly?

  96. doktorgizemli says:

This is another example that the “old world jounalism of Murrow, Cronkite and Rather is dead and buried. In the case of the Time Magazine reporter Ms Tumulty, she seems to think the finding out the who, what, where, when and how have been replaced with a steno pad, which she records what ABC said in rebuttle to the complaint of Congressman Kucinich. There is a great disconnect with what happened and the points made by ABC. She asks little of no questions to ABC. She takes what is handed to her and repeats it vebatim and then calls that reporting. I call is stenography. Lida Sohbet sohbet sesli chat Gelinlik Modelleri

If you’re referring to Karl Schwarz’ articles, if they are true, how will we ever know unless the news media gets involved without bias? The military under orders not to speak out may never convey Karl Scharz’ expose’. Sesli Sohbet If Cheney was truly involved in 9/11 and protected in some way, then he’s being protected by what may be going on in the Caspian Sea area as well. That pre-9/11 August 10, 2000 article drives the point home to me that Cheney had a vested interest in the oil at the Caspian Sea area (before 9/11).
