Palin has no clue how entitlements work.

Tonight in an ABC interview, host Charlie Gibson asked Gov. Sarah Palin (R-AK) if she would cut entitlements — such as Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid. Palin, however, began talking about spending by government agencies, demonstrating a fundamental ignorance on economics:

GIBSON: Do you talk about entitlement reform? Is there money you can save in Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid?

PALIN: I am sure that there are efficiencies that are going to be found in all of these agencies. I’m confident in that.

GIBSON: The agencies are not involved in entitlements. Basically, discretionary spending is 18 percent of the budget.

Watch it:

Last weekend, Palin also tried to explain the recent federal bailout of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac by saying that they had “gotten too big and too expensive to the taxpayers.” The companies, however, aren’t taxpayer funded but rather operate as private companies.

Transcript:

GIBSON: So let me break some of those down. You talk about spending. How much smaller would a McCain budget be? Where would you cut?

PALIN: We’re going to find efficiencies in every department. We have got to. There are some things that I think should be off the table. Veterans’ programs, off the table. You know, we owe it to our veterans and that’s the greatest manifestation that we can show in terms of support for our military, those who are in public service fighting for America. It’s to make sure that our veterans are taken care of and the promises that we’ve made to them are fulfilled.

GIBSON: So you’d take military off the table, the veterans’ benefits. That’s 20 percent of the budget. Do you talk about entitlement reform? Is there money you can save in Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid?

PALIN: I am sure that there are efficiencies that are going to be found in all of these agencies. I’m confident in that.

GIBSON: The agencies are not involved in entitlements. Basically, discretionary spending is 18 percent of the budget.

PALIN: We have certainly seen excess in agencies, though, and in — when bureaucrats, when bureaucracy just gets kind of comfortable, going with the status-quo and not being challenged to find efficiencies and spend other people’s money wisely, then that’s where we get into the situation that we are into today, and that is a tremendous growth of government, a huge debt, trillions of dollars of debt that we’re passing on to my kids and your kids and your grandkids … It’s unacceptable.

Update Yglesias has more.
Update Palin used the word "efficiencies" four different times during the interview to refer to money that can be saved in government agencies. She presumably meant "inefficiencies."

  2. spencers mom says:

Medicare is the most efficient health plan in our country. They spend approx. 2% of their total budget on administration, and there is no profit margin. They do not have plush offices, catered meetings or board rooms.

For profit healthcare typically has administrative expenses in the 12 – 15% range, and often exceeds that. In addition, profits are a key motive, so necessity of care is under a microscope because less spent means more profit (I know, no brainer).

There is no economy of scale in for profit healthcare. Each plan has its own CEO, COO, CFO, IT system, etc. Each has numerous subcontracts and business process outsourcing. Most for profits have exported data entry, systems programming, customer service centers, etc. overseas, thus eliminating millions of U.S. jobs. Medicare does none of that.

I’d love to see how the people who work within Medicare, Medicaid and Social Security view Palin’s opinions that there is plenty of “pork” in their budgets.

    Clueless.

I have to agree with her. DHS comes to mind when we talk about “tremendous growth of government”.

However, it is Palin’s party who is responsible for every one of these things, not the Democrats.

Question: Does Palin understand the difference between the debt and the deficit? So far, absolutely no economic policies have been defined by either person on that ticket.

Well, I think everyone knows that we can save money in Medicare by repealing that disastrous bill that Billy Tauzin rammed through, just before retiring to take a job with Big Pharma, that prohibited the government from negotiating for lower drug prices.

What do you think of that proposal, Lady McPalin?

The election 08 was stolen over one year ago. The GOP, through caging schemes, voter challenges, ID laws and voter suppression has already eliminated about 5 million Democratic voters. All the media needs do now is report a couple of rigged poll results claiming McCain is either tied or slightly ahead of Obama and when the actual theft goes down, no one will think it unusual. See Greg Palast’s reports on the stolen elections 2000, 2004 and 2008 he did for BBC.

Now I am convinced… we need a test to check the knowledge of a person before they are able to run for president/VP. Especially if we are going to see questionable ones such as palin and McCain run for office. I have heard this woman has a degree of some sort in broadcasting after attending 5 colleges. One can easily obtain a degree without taking History, Government of Political science. Also, not much gov or his is taught in our public school system K – 12 these days.

I also want to know the details of her questionable pregnancy…until that is cleared up, I can only view her as a nut bag Lifetime Movies are scripted over.

What the hell is wrong with this woman? And she is the governor of Alaska??? Gramps McSame needs to halt her back on the campaign trail with him because she is making him and his campaign more of a bigger buffoon than what he is now. Does she know the defintion of entitlement. Palin has been wearing her tiara too long. Can’t wait for the debates with Saraccuda and Biden. By now, Gibson is probably taking a box of aspirin after interviewing the lnatic fringe of Alaska. I heard that the bombastic lad Hannity will be interviewing Ms. Congeniality on his show. Look for distorted, crapola, and a blowhard interview with Palin.

  25. DidHeJustSayThat says:

Well I am sure that every American can agree that we want it to be good.

Obama’s positions are on the side that most Americans aren’t on.

By the first or second day after Palin’s convention speech I actually thought McCain might be smart enough to realize his mistake, throw her under the bus, and make a different veep choice. It pays to vet your running mate.

Just the sound of her nasal sounding voice makes me think of a child (immature). And the more she lies, the more I can’t stand the sound of it.

Can voters really be that uninformed or blind enough to vote for this lying dim bulb? It scares me to think they don’t know the difference.

  36. Bob says:

The ultimate point is that McCain has shown incredibly poor judgement in his pick for VP. This is a wonderful sideshow, but now every discussion about Sarah Palin should start and end with the reiteration:
John McCain has shown a lack of consideration for the safety and well-being of the country.

  37. Left Coast Mike says:

You know, I spend a couple hours daily reading with the occasional comment here on TP. I am really getting sick of Sarah Palin stories. We should not be focusing on this POS. John McCain is the one we need to bring down and expose for the lying sack of shit he is. The last time the focus was on a vice presidential candidate it was Dan Quayle and Bush 1 ended up winning because we lost our focus. 47. DeanOR says:

I think she bullshits well enough to fool a lot of voters. And Gibson is a terrible interviewer, which is why the campaign chose him. He asks canned questions and moves on without going into any depth. So she slips her way through the interview without crashing to the degree that many expected. Sure, she’s faking it, but I don’t think most Americans are informed enough to realize that or to care. And to the extent that they do pick up the bs factor, it’s the same way they would get through an exam or a job interview, so they can identify with her. The assumption is that any well-intentioned person with the right “values” and a little experience can be President, especially if they’re from a small town. I hope I’m wrong about all that.

“[McCain's] plan gives absolutely nothing to about 100 million American households. I can make a firm pledge. Under my plan, no family making less than $250,000 a year will see any form of tax increase. Not your income tax, not your payroll tax, not your capital gains taxes, not any of your taxes.

“And my opponent can’t make that pledge, and here’s why. For the first time in American history, John McCain wants to tax your health-care benefits. Apparently, Senator McCain doesn’t think it’s enough that health care premiums have doubled, he thinks that you should have to pay taxes on them, too. That’s a $3.6 trillion tax increase potentially on middle-class families. And that would eventually leave tens of millions of you paying higher taxes or losing your benefits. That’s his idea of change.”

  52. wizard2000 says:

Two words come to mind whenever I hear the name Sarah Palin mentioned: Monica Goodling.

Would anyone in their right mind vote for Monica Goodling to be vice-president, someone a heartbeat away from being president?

Well, Sarah Palin IS Monica Goodling.

Just like Goodling, Palin abused her position of public trust, using her public office for personal/religious vendettas.

Just like Goodling, Palin lied, lied, lied, while claiming to be a follower of Jesus Christ, who I really doubt is the Prince of Lies.

Just like Goodling, Palin is unqualified to hold any government position, especially not vice-president or (God help us) president.

Palin equals Goodling, with the same disdain for the rule of law, our Constitution, the will of our founding fathers to keep church and state separate.

Palin equals Goodling, with all the horror this entails for the freedom-loving women of our nation.

McCain leads the Republitroid party, and ergo, they have always stated they hate the government. TP implied that Palin was asked if she would cut entitlements:

“Tonight in an ABC interview, host Charlie Gibson asked Gov. Sarah Palin (R-AK) if she would cut entitlements — such as Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid. Palin, however, began talking about spending by government agencies, demonstrating a fundamental ignorance on economics:”

Gibson actually asked if the there is money to be saved in the programs.

GIBSON: Do you talk about entitlement reform? Is there money you can save in Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid?

PALIN: “I am sure that there are efficiencies that are going to be found in all of these agencies. I’m confident in that.”

“Cutting entitlements” implies cutting the benefits individuals receive.

So you see, I didn’t change the subject at all. I support Obama. I believe Palin is unqualified to be VP. Just because you oppose someone doesn’t make it right to misconstrue what they say. Thank you – that’s great! The portions that were edited out actually make her look even stupider. I didn’t think that was possible!

  71. Alejandro says:

We’re going to find efficiencies in every department. We have got to. There are some things that I think should be off the table. Veterans’ programs, off the table.

So I guess it’s ok for the VA to be inefficient?

  72. Alejandro says:

Medicare is the most efficient health plan in our country. They spend approx. 2% of their total budget on administration, and there is no profit margin. They do not have plush offices, catered meetings or board rooms.

That doesn’t mean that doctors and hospitals haven’t been ripping off Medicare regularly.

I want my hope for America back.

This is a great mystery to me. I have yet to have a republican tell me why republicans are better for America than democrats and yet they continue to support them…..presumably because they are not liberals…..another amazing mystery. Why would thinking people be regressive…..may have answered my own question but it still doesn’t make sense.

I am not lying. I am claiming that EVERY program has corruption. The word for pummelting out the corruption is called law enforcement. Ineffecincies are handled by changes in policy and law.

Conflating the two are changing the subject.

    Keep up.

  78. margerine says:

Man, this is a bad start for her. More of a bad start than I anticipated. She’s not a stupid woman at all, but I think it’s clear that being thrust in the VP spotlight should not have happened to her this early on in her political career… If ever, considering she doesn’t seem to know (or care about) anything involving national or international affairs.

It makes me wonder how the VP debates are going to go. She’ll again be stuck going by her own words, trying to remember talking points… I imagine Biden will be able to take huge advantage of that.

    Shayne’s gonna be pissed

I loathe this woman with every fiber of my being RUC. She diminishes the advances women have made every time she opens her mouth. African Americans have Obama and we have Buckshot Barbie.

  82. Alecto says:

Oh and I forget the bad CHOICE she made on her unborn son’s health bu risking a trip to Texas at 7 months, and then boarding a plane for an 8+ hour plane ride home with the protective fluid surrounding her unborn son LEAKING from her crocth.
AND BTW, she lied to the airlines by not informing them of this situation. I’m just saying.

So for 3 of her 5 kids* (* if she actaully gave birth to 5 kids is still unproven) she has obviously made HUGELY bad choices and oversight, and risked the life of the child at some point.

Hmmm, doesn’t sound too appealing to me.

  83. Alecto says:

But she has taken advantage of all the CHOICES that the conservatives have been railing against the LEFT for fighting for women.

  84. MrSquirrel says:

I’m just glad to hear Ms. Palin reassure us how efficient these agencies and departments are. She will find efficiencies everywhere in government, she says. This is wonderful news, as it seemed to be so inefficient at times. But Ms. Palin claims otherwise, and she should know, what with her vast amount of experience in these matters.

  85. Krazny says:

I wonder as Palin is out there more and more if the shiny newness will wear off?

Weren’t the republicans complaining about Obama’s celebrity status no to long ago?

  86. GL2814 says:

The absolutely sick part is, no matter how clueless Palin is about the issues, people will still blindly vote for her, because she’s the republican VP candidate. These are the same sheep who voted Skippy McAWOL into office twice.

If McCain gets elected, this country will slide even further down the same shitter it’s been sliding down the past eight years.

  87. The Republic of Stupidity says:

    Krazny Says:

Weren’t the republicans complaining about Obama’s celebrity status no to long ago?
    _________

Actually, Krazny, what the GOOPers were complaining about was the fact that they simply couldn’t match Obama’s celebrity status at that time. Now that they’ve got their own shiny new toy, it’s ‘kay, no?

However, there is one BIG difference here. Obama, in his own way, has been publicly vetted. After a year and a half of making speeches and running in primary after primary AND competing against a full slate of candidates, the American people do have a pretty good idea of what they’re getting. There’s NO WAY anyone can claim Obama is still an unknown.

On the other hand, w/ McPalin, no one, including the GOOP, really knows how far this new found “celebrityhood” can go, or how long it will last. She is a total crap shoot for them.

Just another variation on “Shock and Awe” or “the Surge”… kind of a blinding blitzkreig/gimmick they hope will carry the day for them.

In their defense ***cough…***, they have been getting away w/ this sort of BS for a long time now, AND, they really have nothing else to run on… no real platform, no prior GOOP successes over the last 8 years (Botch is already long forgotten, huh?)… NOTHING, NADA, BUBKISS…

So… it should be verrry interesting to see how far they can push this nonsense onto the public, and how quickly the shine will wear off. I’d be expecting a whole series of carefully orchestrated, meticulously scripted “Shock and Awe” moments right up to 11/4/08, if I were you.

  88. Alecto says:

    TROS,

Exactly, and the POOREST of choices McCrazy could have made. Which just shows his callous disregard to the very safety and security of the country. A sad, and sorry state for the GOOPers to say the least. Totally devoid of substance and vision.

That is progress to the Republicans of today.

Perhaps you’ll point out where I conflated the two. The question was about saving money in the programs. Getting rid of, or reducing, inefficiency and corruption (by whatever means)saves money. The concept is really not that difficult.
