In his interview with Sarah Palin that aired this morning on Good Morning America, ABC’s Charlie Gibson challenged the governor on whether she has any national security experience. Some highlights from the interview:
On National Security Credentials:
GIBSON: When I asked John McCain about your national security credentials, he cited the fact that you have commanded the Alaskan National Guard and that Alaska is close to Russia. Are those sufficient credentials?
PALIN: Let me speak specifically about a credential that I do bring to this table, Charlie, and that’s with the energy independence…
On Alaska National Guard:
GIBSON: Have you ever given any kind of command decision to the Alaska National Guard?
PALIN: We have called up National Guardsmen to help in other states who have gone in emergency status. We have assisted there.
On Traveling Outside The Country:
GIBSON: Had you ever traveled outside the country prior to your trip to Kuwait and Germany last year?
PALIN: Canada, Mexico, and then yeah — that trip was the trip of a lifetime to visit our troops in Kuwait and stop and visit our injured soldiers in Germany.
On Visiting With Foreign Head Of State:
GIBSON: Have you ever met a foreign head of state?
PALIN: I have not and I think if you go back in history and you ask that question of many vice presidents, they may have the same answer.
On Russia:
PALIN: We’ve gotta keep an eye on Russia. … You can actually see Russia from land here in Alaska.
GIBSON: What insight does that give you into what they’re doing inside Georgia?
PALIN: Well, I’m giving you that perspective of how small our world is and how important it is that we work with our allies to keep good relations with all of these countries, especially Russia.
On Iraq:
PALIN: Of course I’ve been focused on the war. Of course I’ve been, as every American has been.
GIBSON: Why’d you say this though? “I’ve been so focused on state government, I haven’t really focused much on the war in Iraq.”
PALIN: It was an honest answer for the question that day by a reporter asking me about Alaska Business Monthly issues, was my focus being on energy independence and security — those things that Alaska could supply to help make this country better and safer.
Watch a compilation:
A number of the claims that Palin made were false. She has never issued an order to the Alaska National Guard and every vice president “over the last 30 years had met a foreign head of state before being elected.” In addition to saying that she hasn’t “really focused much on the war in Iraq” in March 2007, Palin also called for “an exit plan” from Iraq. Although she can see Russia from some parts of Alaska, Palin has never actually traveled there.
More on Palin’s actual record in The Sarah Palin Digest.
What a f ucking ass clown.
September 12th, 2008 at 10:28 amMr. Gibson: “Have you ever met a foreign head-of-state?”
Lady McPalin: “I have not.”
…then, in answer to a question about Russia and Georgia……
Lady McPalin: …I met with Saakashvili the other day… [NOTE: Mikheil Saakashvili is Georgia's President, and he would qualify as a "head-of-state"].
She must have forgotten about that when Mr. Gibson asked her earlier if she ever met any heads-of-state. Also, three out of the four previous vice presidents (and her Democratic counterpart in the election) had way more foreign policy credentials.
September 12th, 2008 at 10:31 amDick Cheney in a dress. Maybe worse.
September 12th, 2008 at 10:31 amPalin even bailed on her faith in Gibson’s interview.
When asked what she meant about saying our leaders were sending our troops to Iraq on a task “that is from God,” Palin replied that she was thinking about Lincoln at the time.
The idea that she was thinking about Abraham Lincoln at the time she was giving those remarks doesn’t pass the laugh test. It’s the kind of spin that comes from secular political consultants desperately trying to make Palin sound “not too religious.”

September 12th, 2008 at 10:33 amDoes any of it matter? Is it just me or are all these stories doing seemingly nothing to stop this potential disaster from becoming VP?
September 12th, 2008 at 10:35 amSo, she’s never actually ’seen’ Russia, although you can, if you stand in the right spot on a clear day. In June. On Tuesday. At 4PM.
September 12th, 2008 at 10:36 amSo by using Sarah Palin’s reasoning, I have the right to tell my teacher that I’m fluent in Spanish because I stood at the end of Florida and saw Cuba.
If this logic is acceptable then let me be the first to say, thank you Sarah…I now have an example to prove why that 66 on my last test was unfair.
September 12th, 2008 at 10:36 amYea, but how bout those tits!!!
September 12th, 2008 at 10:37 amLady McPalin: …I met with Saakashvili the other day… [NOTE: Mikheil Saakashvili is Georgia’s President, and he would qualify as a “head-of-state”].
– - I believe she said she spoke to him on the phone. That’s not “a meeting.”
But she bristled when Gibson asked if she had ever met any foreign heads-of-state. Palin opined that many other VPs were in the same position as her. Turns out, not so much. All of our VPs before they were VPs.
September 12th, 2008 at 10:38 amPALIN: Of course I’ve been focused on the war. Of course I’ve been, as every American has been.
GIBSON: Why’d you say this though? “I’ve been so focused on state government, I haven’t really focused much on the war in Iraq.”
That’s funny, almost as good as “We’ll win in Iraq by winning” from JM.
September 12th, 2008 at 10:38 amCan someone Please tell me how being a collaberator with the oil companies makes her an energy expert? Here’s more RoveStink, already happening in Ohio.
Ballot snafu endangers votes
This isn’t a snafu, this is typical Rovian Dirty tricks.
From the article..
About one-third of the absentee ballot applications received at the Hamilton
County Board of Elections have been ruled invalid because Republican Sen. John McCain’s presidential campaign printed a version of the form with an extra, unneeded box on it.
In a narrow interpretation of Ohio law, Democratic Secretary of State Jennifer Brunner says many of the McCain forms have not been completed properly. If the box stating the person is an eligible elector — or qualified voter – is not checked, Brunner said, the application is no good.
Even though the box is unneeded, by not checking it voters are essentially admitting they’re not eligible, Brunner said.
“I have not seen a ruling that indirectly impacts voters to the enormity of this since I’ve been here,’’ Hamilton County Board of Elections Deputy Director John Williams said of his nearly five-year tenure at the board.
More than 750 absentee ballot requests in Hamilton County have been invalidated because of Brunner’s ruling, Williams said.
Absentee voting begins in 19 days, or on Sept. 30.
and the McIIIrd campaign mailed out a million of these.
Why would the Republicans perpetrate this fraud on the citizens of Ohio?
September 12th, 2008 at 10:43 amThere is no question at all that she is ill prepared. Her answers were—at best—inconsistent, incongruent, illogical, inapplicable and incorrect.
Oh, yeah: and then there were the not-so-clever misrepresentations, the poorly framed denials and the outright lies!
The right end of the political spectrum can spin this interview any way they want, but only a fool would buy the frankly silly explanations and amplifications they offer. Ready on day one? Come on: who’s kidding who here?

September 12th, 2008 at 10:57 amFor what it’s worth, I’m a Dem committee person in a small Philly ‘burb town, responsible for getting approx. 850 voters to the polls, and convincing them that Obama is the best choice this year.
I’ve found that KISS works best. I point out (using a graph found here: http://www.crooksandliars.com/2008/08/27/despite-cnn-distortion-americans-prefer-obama-tax-plan/ ) where the tax cuts really go. I point out that Palin kept the bridge money ($233 million) for her own pet projects.
And the best argument that gains traction with so many is that, while the “prolife” people held the White House, both houses of congress and a 5-4 majority Supreme Court during a time when they could have overturned Roe v. Wade, they did nothing because they need to keep that wedge issue in place to stir up the base. Add in some quotes from David Kuo about the lack of promised funding for the Office of Faith Based Initiatives, and some very GOP eyes open for the first time.

September 12th, 2008 at 11:01 amPalin Explains Her National Security Credentials: ‘Energy’ And The Fact That ‘You Can See Russia From Alaska’
Comapred to Bush Palin is over qualified. Besides, what do you need to know anyway when all you do is take your marching orders from corporate America and neocon think tanks?
http://progressiveworldreview.com
September 12th, 2008 at 11:03 amEnergy is different than national security. At least it was before George W. Bush invaded Iraq for oil.
September 12th, 2008 at 11:05 amI can see a veterinary hospital from my house so I am an expert in veterinary medicine. If I get up on my roof, I can see an Eli Lilly plant in the distance so that makes me an expert in manufacturing pharmaceuticals too!
Wow, maybe I should break out some binoculars so I can obtain expertise in any number of endeavors, examples of which I can see from my home.
Why go to college when all you need is proximity or line of sight? It sure is cheaper to get your expertise by magical osmosis than by actual study and experience.
September 12th, 2008 at 11:05 amI’ve been working on for these years as the governor of this state that produces nearly 20 percent of the U.S. domestic supply of energy.
These years? She has only been in office 18 months. And drilling in Alaska has little to do with our energy independence. If we drilled every inch of Alaska tomorrow, we would still have an energy problem.
I don’t understand what is going on here. It’s like half the country has gone bat-shit crazy.
September 12th, 2008 at 11:08 amOnly someone like Darth Cheney and Sarah Palin are crazy enough to enjoy the thought of a war with Russia, all while watching the holocaust safely from the VP bunker.
Is diplomacy dead? Diplomacy is what kept the Cold War from becoming a Hot War. Russia is every bit as powerful as the United States. They have thousands of nuclear weapons at their disposal, and some of the most advanced rockets in the world to deliver them. The Russian people defeated Hitler’s Operation Barbarossa, the largest single invasion in the history of mankind. If we were insane enough to start a war with the Russians, what kind of war would it be? Nuclear? If conventional, then it’s assumed we’ll be fighting in and around Georgia and the Black Sea. This would be on Russia’s “home turf”, where historically they have always been at their best in battle. The U.S. military is already overstretched and war-fatigued as it is, due to Chimpy’s mess in Iraq & Afganistan.
Just the mere thought of war with Russia is bad, bad, very bad. Too bad Sarah Palin’s brain doesn’t match her looks.

There will undoubtedly be efforts at voter suppression but the Ohio issue is nothing more than a Republican fubar. The absentee applications were printed by McCain’s campaign as part of the GOTV effort in (Republican) southwest Ohio. They screwed up the form and now have to do it again. John Williams is a Republican stooge who went to the Board of Elections after a long stint at the Chamber of Commerce. Unlike the wingnuts I want every vote to count but watching the local Republicans trip over their own dongs is priceless.

Because sometimes you can get your line-of-sight osmosis by going to college. http://jamesfallows.theatlantic.com/archives/2008/09/the_palin_interview.php
Palin has admitted to being incurious about Iraq in the past. Why should we expect that her change in status will change her nature. She is who she is.
September 12th, 2008 at 11:15 amIt is also not true that Alaska produces 20% of our domestic energy. It produces 20% of our domestic oil supply.
Then again, oil is just about the only thing Palin ever thinks about.
ANyone with half a brain knows that when we talk about energy independence, it is mainly about moving away from dependence on oil.
September 12th, 2008 at 11:15 amAfter her “attack Russia” comment, it’s time for the Democrats to dust off the girl/daisy/mushroom cloud commercial. Play Palin’s comment about Russia and then show the girl plucking the daisy. Then pan in to Palin’s left eye and show a mushroom cloud reflected there. It would be a very effective ad and it would be a true statement of what might happen if this whack job were to ever sit in the oval office.
September 12th, 2008 at 11:16 amThis woman is in waaaaaaaaaay over her head. It would be laughable if it wasn’t so frightening.

September 12th, 2008 at 11:18 amPALIN: I have not and I think if you go back in history and you ask that question of Dan Quayle, he may have the same answer.
September 12th, 2008 at 11:20 amI agree with your post but would point out that even that 20% of oil produces is not used in America, it is sold elsewhere. Why is that? We really need it. It would be in our national interest to make sure it is used here.
September 12th, 2008 at 11:20 amPalin and McCain appear to be on the same page (or have been issued the exact same talking point from their handlers) when they attempt to conflate energy with national security. This is nothing more than an thinly disguised (VERY thinly disguised) attempt to cover up the fact that Palin doesn’t know the difference between detente and a debutante.
Palin has no special credentials in the field of national security, so she and McBush are attempting to make “energy” that credential. Palin sees “energy independence” as something she is “expert” in, but that won’t fly. Palin only knows about oil (and only that her state has it), and even if we exploit every single last drop of what we have within US borders, it won’t be enough to bring us “energy independence”.
What’s Palin’s cred on nuclear power? hydroelectric power? solar power? wind power? biofuels? biomass? landfill gas? conservation programs?
Thought so.

September 12th, 2008 at 11:32 amThe lies that Palin has been caught in as to experience and denial of statements goes right to her character and that of McCain’s. In fact, the McCain campaign under Steve Shmidt and Rick Davis is totally void of character as well. McCain is quickly looking worse than Bush on character. McCain and Palin are not like Bush, they’re worse. And Cheney is looking like a boyscout.

Palin vs. Gibson, Round 1
The ABC News anchor flummoxes the GOP amateur.
By Jack Shafer
first two paragraphs…
Without being smarmy about it or unfurling gotcha questions, ABC News anchor Charles Gibson demonstrated that he knows volumes more about national security and foreign policy than does Republican vice-presidential candidate Sarah Palin.
In an on-location-in-Alaska interview that consumed 11 or 12 minutes (video) of the Thursday edition of World News Tonight and continues later tonight on Nightline and again tomorrow on World News Tonight and 20/20, Palin recited her answers as if reading from a Teleprompter inside her head. The extensive coaching she has received could not save her from embarrassment in this exchange.
Good reading.

September 12th, 2008 at 11:37 am1) Of what I heard of the interview, she didn’t answer a single question but instead substituted her own question. That and she didn’t seem to comprehend that anyone could question her.
2) It would be nice if she learned how to say “nuclear”.
September 12th, 2008 at 11:54 amPalin makes an excellent point that “we’ve got to keep an eye on Russia” and that you can see Russia from Alaskan land. The problem is however, if elected, she’ll reside at 1600 PA Ave. This would naturally leave us vulnerable. Accordingly, the best way to keep the country safe is to return her to Alaska in November where she can continue to protect us.

She increased the taxes on oil companies – here is the money quote:
Palin Boosted Oil-Company Taxes While Alaska Had Budget Surplus
By Alison Fitzgerald (Bloomberg)
“…Under Palin’s plan, called “Alaska’s Clear and Equitable Share,” oil company profits are taxed at a 25 percent base rate, up from the previous 22.5 percent. When the price rises to $30 over cost, or about $52 a barrel, the tax rate rises 0.2 percent for each dollar.
Oil companies weren’t happy with the plan when it passed.
“This massive tax increase will weaken investment in Alaska’s oilfields at the very time that more investment is needed,” Doug Suttles, president of BP Exploration Alaska Inc., said in a Dec. 27 e-mailed statement. “We will now review all our planned activities.”

Article II, Section 1, Clause 5 (should now read): No Person except a natural born Citizen, or a Citizen of the United States, at the time of the Adoption of this Constitution, shall be eligible to the Office of President; neither shall any Person be eligible to that Office who shall not have attained to the Age of thirty five Years, and been fourteen Years a Resident within the United States, nor who consistently mispronounces the word “nuclear”.

September 14th, 2008 at 9:45 amThis is another example that the “old world jounalism of Murrow, Cronkite and Rather is dead and buried. In the case of the Time Magazine reporter Ms Tumulty, she seems to think the finding out the who, what, where, when and how have been replaced with a steno pad, which she records what ABC said in rebuttle to the complaint of Congressman Kucinich. There is a great disconnect with what happened and the points made by ABC. She asks little of no questions to ABC. She takes what is handed to her and repeats it vebatim and then calls that reporting. I call is stenography. Lida Sohbet sohbet sesli chat Gelinlik Modelleri
January 11th, 2009 at 11:27 amIf you’re referring to Karl Schwarz’ articles, if they are true, how will we ever know unless the news media gets involved without bias? The military under orders not to speak out may never convey Karl Scharz’ expose’. Sesli Sohbet If Cheney was truly involved in 9/11 and protected in some way, then he’s being protected by what may be going on in the Caspian Sea area as well. That pre-9/11 August 10, 2000 article drives the point home to me that Cheney had a vested interest in the oil at the Caspian Sea area (before 9/11). Fx15 From all I’ve read in Schwarz’ articles, he claims the Taliban was working on a deal with Argentina with that pipeline in the Caspian Sea area and UNOCOL wanted the deal instead. Orjinal Lida It’s too much to get into here and I’m not able to convey in here what Schwarz has presented in his articles. Sikis Dig into Schwarz’ articles to learn more about the unnamed soldier’s experiences related to so-called Black Ops missions in the Caspian Sea area in Schwarz’ article. What Schwarz had to present in this article is an eye opener: kurtlar vadisi pusu izle

It was an honest answer for the question that day by a reporter asking me about Alaska Business Monthly issues, was my focus being on energy independence and security — those things that Alaska could supply to help make this country better and safer.
