As “Greater Houston faces the real possibility of a direct hit” from Hurricane Ike, “the National Weather Service issued a stern warning to people living in small houses on Galveston Island that they faced ‘certain death’ from flooding if they remained in their homes.”
The House will vote on a bill to allow expanded offshore drilling as early as next week, as part of an energy package that would also repeal tax breaks for oil companies and invest in renewable energy sources. “So we’re saying: OK, you want to drill, this is how it will be. No more subsidies,” House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said.
The next president “will be confronted with slow growth, high unemployment and an economy teetering toward recession, say 51 private economists surveyed by The Wall Street Journal,” making “pumping up the economy will the first challenge facing either Democrat Barack Obama or Republican John McCain.”
McCain has tapped a prominent Washington lobbyist “to conduct a study in preparation for the presidential transition.” In 2008, The lobbyist, Walter E. Timmons of Timmons and Company, lobbied “for a wide range of companies and trade groups, including the American Petroleum Institute, the American Medical Association, Chrysler, Freddie Mac, Visa USA, and Anheuser-Busch.”
On the trail today: John McCain appears on “The View” and “The Rachel Ray Show.” Barack Obama will stop in Dover, NH to discuss tax relief for the middle class and then will appear later at a “Change We Need” rally at the New Hampshire Technical Institute in Concord.
Foreclosure filings last month “increased 27 percent compared to the same month a year ago.” Senate Democrats are urging Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac to immediately implement 90-day foreclosure freeze on mortgages they hold.
“The U.S. trade deficit soared in July, the Commerce Department said, as oil imports hit an all-time high. … The Labor Department also reported that new applications for unemployment benefits fell less than expected last week as the struggling economy continues to take a toll on workers.”
“The Justice Department will unveil changes to FBI ground rules today that would put much more power into the hands of line agents pursuing leads on national security, foreign intelligence and even ordinary criminal cases.” The changes give agents “the ability at a much earlier stage” to conduct physical surveillance and solicit information through friends and informants without the approval of a supervisor.
An unusually-detailed study of people newly infected with H.I.V. in the U.S. “has confirmed that the majority of new cases occur among gay and bisexual men and that blacks are most at risk.” The study — reported yesterday by the CDC — also found that whites and blacks tend to be infected with the H.I.V. virus at different times in their lives.
And finally: Speaking to Working Mother Media on Wednesday, Sen. Elizabeth Dole (R-NC) told a story about a sexist former classmate from her days at Harvard Law School. The guy asked her why she was there, insinuating that she just wanted to land a rich husband. “Don’t you know that there are men who…will actually use their legal education?” he asked her. Dole said that this man is now a powerful DC attorney and that she now “loves to tell the story in front of him” — “just to make him squirm.”

Women Say “No Sarah Palin” Speak Out
These women are from all walks of life that have responded to the blog. Some are Republicans voters that abhor Palin’s views on abortion and her unusual religious beliefs has demonstrated Palin’s “intolerance for differing beliefs” have raised serious concerns for them. All of the life-long GOP voters that have responded will not be voting for John McCain.
With recent polls suggesting that women are flocking to the McCain/Palin ticket, there is a growing chorus of female voices who want to put a stop to this trend, and fast. Two women in New York felt so strongly that Palin was the wrong choice they created a blog called “Women Against Sarah Palin” and are using the site to post emails from women who write in from all over the country about why they think Palin is the wrong choice as for Vice President and the wrong choice for American women.
Shortly after Palin’s selection, Kilston and her co-worker Quinn Latimer, citing what they saw as ‘mounting disbelief, fury and dread’ among their female friends over the selection of Sarah Palin, sent out an email to forty of their friends soliciting reaction the Alaska Governor’s nomination for their blog.
Within a week they received up to 80,000 responses from women from Alaska to Florida, and now estimate they are receiving response emails at a rate of three per second.
Some of the best arguments against Sarah Palin, being the wrong choice, come from the GOP–including Sarah, herself. Kudos to Jon Stewart for a great collection of clips; why not to vote for a McCain/Palin ticket. Link to Great Video
Here is a link to their website. They are on target to hit the 100,000 responses today. It is incredible what they have accomplished in such a short time. I want to help them spread the word. (What I find truly surprising is that ABC blog is the one that posted the article.)

How about adding a “use it or lose it” section that addresses the millions of acres of leases the oil companies already have in place?
And windfall profits tax? If it was good enough for Palin in Alaska, how about the rest of us? I would love my governor, too, if he sent me a $1200 check from an oil windfall tax.

September 12th, 2008 at 9:15 amPalin’s response to Gibson on her “soldiers on a task from God”:
Hat’s off to McCain staffers that went into high gear to find a quote from a great American leader so as to mitigate her remarks from the convention. But, it still doesn’t wash. And man did she sound coached on this line or what? It was truly memorized for this interview.
“I would never presume to know God’s will or to speak God’s words,” Palin said. “But what Abraham Lincoln had said, and that’s a repeat in my comments, was, ‘Let us not pray that God is on our side in a war or any other time, but let us pray that we are on God’s side.’ ”
Harold Holzer, a prominent Lincoln scholar and author of multiple Lincoln biographies, said last night that Palin’s original comment that US troops are on a task from God does not follow Lincoln’s quote.
“I think there is no computing the precise Lincoln quote with her own quote,” Holzer said. “Lincoln sought guidance from God, he didn’t tell people that God was guiding him. It is just different.”

For every $1.00 Alaska pays in federal taxes it receives in federal spending $1.84. It ranks 3rd among the highest recipients.

September 12th, 2008 at 9:21 amGreenspan: Recession Still ‘50 Percent or More’ Likely
Former Fed chair tells CNBC’s ‘Closing Bell’ recession more likely than not, predicts inflation after economic ‘crisis.’
The economy isn’t out of the woods yet in spite of 3.3 percent gross domestic product (GDP) growth in the second quarter of 2008, according to former Federal Reserve Chairman Alan Greenspan.
Greenspan appeared on CNBC’s September 9 “Closing Bell” and was asked by host Maria Bartiromo if he would stick with a prediction he made earlier this year that the United States would go into a recession.
“Well, I said 50 percent or more and I still stand by that statement,” Greenspan said. “I think the real interesting question at the moment, with all of this financial problem – why is the economy in the world still in positive territory?”
Greenspan was referring to the fact the United States has had only one quarter of economic contraction – in the fourth quarter of 2007 – followed by two quarters of growth – something he didn’t expect.
“The United States is weakening, obviously, and it’s stagnant,” Greenspan said. “But we’re holding up and the developing world, while coming down from its dramatically rapid rates of increase, has slowed as well. And so, I think the real interesting question is why are we doing as well as we are?”

**This has been my question for some time now. The market closed uo again. I have posted this before–somehow these numbers are being artificially propped up. If Obama wins, watch out! I have a picture in my mind of Darth Cheney on the phone with all his buddies “encouraging” them to sink a tiny percentage of their ill-gotten gain back in the market until bush leaves (?) office. I was listening yo a cable news program yesterday that mentioned that some economists were talking about how some speculators drove up the price of oil (surprise?!?) and now prices are coming down. After living in California during the Enron-created energy crisis and the current financial situation stinks the same. Well, it’s financial failure Friday–going to have to wait until this evening or tomorrow to find out which banks failed/closed.

As we’ve seen the use of homeland security apparatus to chase ordinary crooks, this is one overreach that Obama must address early in his presidency. This is a huge potential problem; any agent can pursue an agenda of harassment and intimidation, and if the target complains, the FBI supervisor has no information to base a decision on.
Badges? We don’t need no stinking Constitution!
September 12th, 2008 at 9:27 amleftzone, notice how quickly Palin doled out the Lincoln quote in response to that one question, while she stumbled with the rest. That means the campaign didn’t do so well at anticipating the types of questions asked while they were programming Gov. Palin.

September 12th, 2008 at 9:32 amToday should be a day we don’t forgot those who survived. The ones with severe burns, the ones who are physically no longer the same due to that horrific day, and the ones who now suffer from lung disease.
And let’s not forget those 70,000 individuals who suffer from stress disorders, who CANNOT forget that day!
Let’s also honor those who were at ground zero, and who survived any way the could. Those who helped others that had fallen. Those that helped slower individuals. Those that gave water to the dehydrated. Those that did whatever they could to help. Those that worked day in and day out to search for survivors, and then, unfortunately, for bodies.

September 12th, 2008 at 9:42 amYesterday, after work, I drove by a tribute to the Spirit of 9/11.
Though I didn’t stop and join, it was very touching to see the fire trucks displaying the huge American flag, swaying over the throngs of people who had gathered.
What I found interesting, was an individual on a street corner 2 blocks away, holding up signs. One read, “9/11 WAS AN INSIDE JOB” (Not going there).
The other read “IMPEACH BUSH AND CHENEY”.
There were many cars honking in agreement.
We, as a nation, will never forget that fateful day.

From the article:
The revisions are the latest in a series of efforts to tear down a wall that, prior to the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks, prevented intelligence investigators from sharing some information with their counterparts working on criminal cases.
The Washington Post is perpetuating a right-wing lie. Just because it’s aprt of the official explanation for why they are re-writing rules to get around the Fourth Amendment is no excuse to print a lie unchallenged. Remember, this was also one of their excuses for why they didn’t stop the attacks beforehand. It is not true. They could have shared information if they had sufficient reason to believe a crime was about to be committed.
September 12th, 2008 at 9:44 amWith recent polls suggesting that women are flocking to the McCain/Palin..
I don’t believe those polls any more than I believe the polls showing Bush ahead of Obama. The polling companies are cooking the books on the polls. Hopefully when Obama wins by a landslide the polls will become marginalized and ignored in future races.

September 12th, 2008 at 9:46 amGood morning, Atbgo! You would think gas prices would be SKYROCKETING because of the increased hurricane activity, right? Two months before election, speculators are apparently operating in Safe Mode, relinquishing some of their grip now, in hopes that they can re-tighten their hold after the election and retain their control of this national staple — without any regulation and without any increase in capital gains tax rates.
But that’s the strategy of the naysayers: everyone raising suspicion should be called “loony”, and when the those suspicions are confirmed along with the results, hear the crickets chirping and blame those who raised the suspicion in the first place for the disastrous results.

**Good morning FR!! ;-] Last night, during one of my sleepless moments, I pondered this Caribou Barbie surge. For the life of me I can’t figure it out. Setting aside her radical-right neo positions, this ‘cudda is dangerous. I wanted to know more about her “loyalty test” and found out that her mayoral management style was to the right of Atilla the Hun. This mayoral election drew just over 1,000 voters and THAT was one of their largest turnouts. Then, in this gigantic town that gave her better executive experience than Obama AND Biden, she hands out letters of resignation to all the managers and told them to sign it if thet didn’t support her. Those who refused to sign were fired!
I haven’t researched the size of this “government” but I would be surprised if employees numbered more than 300. Why in the hell did she do this? This issue alone set off warning bell in my mind. I have never heard of any small town mayors doing this. This was right out of the Rove-Cheney playbook even though it was before they “invaded” the White House.
She has continued her “Atilla the Hun” management style since becoming governor. My point is this–we didn’t know much of the things we now know now about the shrub and dark lord until after they took office. How can ANY voter in 2008 vote for these two repukes? The don’t represent more of the same. These two will take us to all new lows.

September 12th, 2008 at 9:59 amThe Presidential race is on but the labels are different:
If you’re a minority and you’re selected for a job over more qualified candidates you’re a “token hire.”
If you’re a conservative and you’re selected for a job over more qualified candidates you’re a “game changer.”
Black teen pregnancies? A “crisis” in black America.
White teen pregnancies? A “blessed event.”
If you grow up in Hawaii you’re “exotic.”
Grow up in Alaska eating mooseburgers, you’re the quintessential “American story.”
Similarly, if you name your kid Barack you’re “unpatriotic.”
Name your kid Track, you’re “colorful.”
If you’re a Democrat and you make a VP pick without fully vetting the individual you’re “reckless.”
A Republican who doesn’t fully vet your VP pick you are a “maverick.”
If you spend 3 years as a community organizer growing your organization from a staff of 1 to 13 and your budget fr om
$70,000 to $400,000, then become the first black President of the Harvard Law Review, create a voter registration drive that registers 150,000 new voters, spend 12 years as a University of Chicago Constitutional Law professor, then spend nearly 8 more years as a State Senator representing a district with over 750,000 people, becoming chairman of the state Senate’s Health and Human Services committee, then spend nearly 4 years in the United States Senate representing a state of nearly 13 million people, sponsoring 131 bills and serving on the Foreign Affairs, Environment and Public Works and Veteran’s Affairs committees, you are woefully inexperienced.
If you spend 4 years on the city council and 6 years as the mayor of a town with less than 7,000 people, then spend 20
months as the governor of a state with 650,000 people, then you’ve got the most executive experience of anyone on
either ticket, are the Commander in Chief of the Alaska milita ry and are well qualified to lead the nation should you be called upon to do so because your state is closest to Russia.
If you are a Democratic male candidate who is popular with millions of people you are an “arrogant celebrity”.
If you are a popular Republican female candidate you are “energizing the base”.
If you are a younger male candidate who thinks for himself and makes his own decisions, you are “presumptuous”.
If you are an older male candidate who makes last minute decisions you refuse to explain, you are a “shoot from
the hip” maverick.
If you are a candidate with a Harvard Law degree you are “an elitist-out of touch” with the real America.
If you are a legacy (dad and granddad were admirals) graduate of Annapolis (graduated 894th in your class of 899), with multiple disciplinary infractions you are “self made”.
If you go to a south side Chicago church, your beliefs are “extremist”.
If you believe in creationism and that global warming has nothing to do with man’s behavior, you are “strongly
principled”.
If you cheated on your first wife with a rich heiress, and left your loyal wife and married the heiress the next
month, you’re a family man.
If you have been married for 19 years to the same woman and raised 2 beautiful daughters, you’re “risky”.
If you’re a black single mother of 4 who waits for 22 hours after her water breaks to seek medical attention, you’re an irresponsible parent, endangering the life of your unborn child.
But if you’re a white married mother who waits 22 hours, you’re spunky.
If you’re a 13-year-old Chelsea Clinton, a right-wing commentator calls you “First dog.”
If you’re a 17-year old pregnant unwed daughter of a Republican, the right-wing press calls you “beautiful” and “courageous.”
If you teach “abstinence only” in sex education, you get teen parents.
If you teach responsible age appropriate sex education, including the proper use of birth control, you are eroding
the fiber of society.
If you’re a Republican senator who solicits sex from a policeman in an airport bathroom, you get to return to your job in the Senate and are encouraged to run for re-election.
September 12th, 2008 at 10:00 amIf you’re a Democratic Senator who is out of public office and have an affair, your political career is over.
Once the government finally declares we are in a recession it will be after Obama takes office. Then the Republicans can blame Obama for the recession. This country has been in a recession for most of this year. We know it and they know it.
It’s going to be so refreshing to have a government in office, once again, who doesn’t lie to us constantly.

September 12th, 2008 at 10:13 am>For those of us in the middle income brackets

>in keeping more of what we earn,
maybe you should think about things like “cost of living”, which account for MUCH more than we pay in taxes! did it ever occur to you that even if its true that the top 1 percent pay more in taxes than the bottom 90 percent, its because they likely own either close to that much, or more, of the total wealth in this country?
have any stats on what percentage of this countries wealth is owned by the top 1 percent of the countries populace?
idiot..

Good Morning :) I agree with you completely. She has proven that if someone disagrees with her, she will hold a grudge to the point that it becomes a vendetta. Palin will crush anyone that stands in her way or disagrees with an issue she is supporting; ie Firing of the Librarian, those people that opposed her decision are still shuned by her.
Her book banning is also very scary. The views she has on Aerial hunting of wolves and bears is evil… There are too many things not quite right about her. I would be very afraid if she was elected what changes she would try to make . I believe that she would make it her mission in life to start on Roe v Wade, considering her extreme views.
Good to see you as always And the beat goes on :)

I don’t give a Cheney what charts or links you post, or what numbers you want to throw around, it’s a simple matter of fact that the upper 5% in this country reep the lion’s share of the benefits of this nation while the lower 95% are struggling more and more under the idiotic Repunk policies that go back to the original sharlatan and economic numbskull Ronnie Raygun. They tend to give more back to society than spoiled trustfunders who traipse through life with an inflated ego and sense that they are somehow DESERVING of the life they live because they happened to be born into it. I am guessing that the fellow who worked so hard and rose so high would happily share the fruits of his success with those less fortunate as in doing so he would feel the true rewards of success. If instead he just used his success to accumulate shit he didn’t need I would argue that he has in fact not been successful

_____________________________________________________________
No doubt there are some people who get to first base on a walk (or they are born on third base), then when they score their run they act like they hit a homer. This can happen to an underprivileged kid who gets a scholarship, and it can happen to a privileged kid who gets his breaks by being a legacy. Anyone who gets to the top and then arrogantly stomps on those below him is evil, no matter how he got there.
However, many people who succeed because they have been given a helping hand, or because somebody removed obstacles in the way, don’t forget how they got where they did. These are the ones who “pay it forward” and work to ensure that others get the opportunities they did.
Success by itself doesn’t equate with evil. We still applaud people who work hard and have something to show for it. However, arrogance, selfishness, dishonesty, and corruption are evil traits — no matter whether you’re a Republican or a Democrat.

I often wonder what happens to the little guy who gets the benefit of socio-economic engineering, pulls himself up, works hard and makes it to the big time. Does he become one of the evil rich people? Does his success make him a target for the Democrat party?
No, we nominate him for president. You know, I hear a lot of conservatives talk about the guy who succeeds (despite the odds), and they like to call them “self-made”. I’ve got news for those folks who think that way – NO ONE is “self-made” in America. People who enjoy financial success often do so precisely because of the socio-economic climate fostered by our great nation’s liberal policies. Our nation’s conservative policies have often resulted in things like the largest per-capita prison population on the planet.
You succeed in America because it’s really a liberal nation at heart, and despite the conservatives’ social policies. (The conservatives’ fiscal policies are simply reckless.)
September 12th, 2008 at 11:03 amOnly if you believe that corporations are what America is. I happen to believe that people are what America is and that corporations have an obligation to serve the best interests of America……you on the other hand think the corps need slaves for America to prosper.
It’s all about the role of companies in our society. Are they here to serve us or are we here to serve them.
Only in America is this such an advicarial relationship. Most nations understand the mutual benifits derived from a more co-operative relationship…..better for all, people and companies.
The all for the companies attitude has brought us to the brink of financial disaster…..why would you defent it?
September 12th, 2008 at 11:04 amBy your reasoning the slaveholders of the old south were just providing jobs. If so why did a republican decide there was something evil about it?

______
Well, if it’s a good thing to keep Americans employed, then isn’t part of a corporation’s purpose to provide jobs? How can corporations continue to make money if the people they rely on to buy their products are constantly being downsized?
Our problem is not with captialism. Our problem is with a narrow-minded understanding of capitalism that puts its sole focus on profit and dividends. We believe that the value of corporations must be measured by more than just the bottom line – they should be measured by how well they protect workers’ rights, and how well they protect the environment, and how they give back to their communities, what measures they take to prevent exploitation of foreign labor, and others. There’s a human dimension to captialism that you conservative Yankee fans seem to forget.
September 12th, 2008 at 11:33 amYou run your mouth about job creation, jerker. Tax breaks to big companies are a gamble. Maybe they’ll create jobs. Maybe. Or they’ll use the extra money further beef up CEO pay.
I’ve said it before, the private sector doesn’t create wealth.
September 12th, 2008 at 11:34 amThat would be the duty of the U.S. Mint, and the Federal Reserve has distributive powers. And if a number of factors aren’t in sync, the House can draft legislation requiring excessive currency holdings be returned to the U.S. treasury.
This is why the tax burden should be on the wealthiest: even if they have the heaviest tax burden, at the end of the day they’re still richer than most Americans. A democracy CANNOT survive without taxes. PERIOD.

Mr. Evil Says:
Why is it that we sell our Alaskan oil to China and buy oil from the Saudis? Just wondering.
Because once the corporations pump it out of the ground it is not longer OUR oil, it is their oil, to make as much money for them as possible. If we nationalize it then it remains our oil. Or if we leave it in the ground, then we can truly lay claim to it being our oil…unless we have signed the rights to pump it to an oil company. THIS IS THE WORST SITUATION. There is no reason to offer more lease on PUBLIC owned oil. It is our true National Rserve.
THAT is the internal conundrum of capitalism, especially GLobal Capitalism. What country does the CORPORATION align themselves with. There is personhood attributed to the corporation, but not actual requirement of citzenship. Therefore, the coporation can set up shop offshore and not pay any taxes, because they are not a citizen.
All we have to do is change a few of the laws that CREATE the corporations to begin with.
First:
A federal mandate that all state corporate charters never superceed the state the corporation is doing business. Meaning, even if they are “housed” in Maryland, but doing business in California, then they MUST abide by California law for taxation and all other matters.
All corporations are Non-entities. They neither have the right to vote, nor have the right to free speech. They are allowed to advertise to seel their wares period.
Corporations are NOT allowed to hold stock or bonds or holdings in another corporation. (this was the way it used to be back in the 1800’s)
Corporations have a lifespan of 100 years, upon which time they end, and all assests of said corporation go to its shareholders.
Corporate practices of employee benefits MUST place said real monies in escrow with a separate non-profit organization setup specifically for those purposes with employess acting as its board members, and the host corporation havinge no ties to said non-profit.
And other rules and laws that will keep th wheels of corporations going to “make as much money as possible” which is all for profit corporations mandate, and funnel said profits to its shareholders.
Now the last law is:
September 12th, 2008 at 12:55 pmAll corporations elections are to be made with EACH shareholder having only 1 vote. Not 1 vote per share. This would totally democrtize corporations and put the power back into the chareholders hands and keep it out of the filthy disgusting ego-maniacs called upper management.

Just listening to the substitute host, Lee Rayburn, on the Thom Hartmann show:
“Misleading” absentee ballot applications are being mailed out by the McCain campaign to registered Democratic voters in purple states. The return addresses are inaccurate, as well as other information. “Misleading, lying” mailers are going out in Florida and other purple states. It’s a caging tactic.
Calls are coming in verifying that this is happening in small towns, as well as larger ones.
The host is trying to determine the scale of this subversion of our democracy.
Here we go again.
UPDATE: It’s happening in Pennsylvania, too. The ballots have included multiple ballots, sender address is a new address while return address is from old city clerk’s office… The I’m trying to type this as he says it, and it may not be clear, since I miss some. I apologize for that.
Fraud. Election fraud. Hopefully the local authorities can help, or the local Obama offices. Calling the media could help, too.
A caller: Robocalls asking if you’re interested in an absentee ballot. Or, notifying the voter that the ballot will be mailed back postage paid to the National Republican Committee.
Another caller from Detroit. Michigan, Wisconsin, Pennsylvania, Florida: That’s where the absentee ballots are being sent to Obama voters. Add Missouri to that, per one of our commenters.
You can be sure McCain isn’t doing this because he wants every vote counted.
UPDATE: A North Carolina caller got THREE of them. In the phone book there’s a street address, but on the form, it’s a P.O. Box, per the caller.
California caller from registrar’s office: McCain should take the application for absentee and submit within 3 days. But the applications will most likely be held for the 3 days and “die”. They’ll most likely submit the Republican ones, and throw away the Democratic ones.
The return address for the request card goes to the wrong city clerk office address, per Rayburn.
Michigan caller: Wrong home address, and then, wrong city clerk address on the one he got. He donated to Obama, but not a Democrat, so he wonders if that’s how they found him.
Hey media? There’s a real story here.
UPDATE: Add Oregon to the list.
And Virginia:
I am a mail carrier in Virgina & delived about 20 of those yesterday. They are sent out bulk mail, so if you refuse them, they just go in the trash.
UPDATE: Add Ohio to the list.
And from Shaun:
Two things:
1) If you get deceptive robo calls, please let me know. I run the National Political Do Not Contact Registry and are keeping a database of these. Audio is key.
See my blog for details: blog.StopPoliticalCalls.org

My grandfather used to tell me, “if something isn’t broke, than why fix it?” If referring to the short term financial assistance that payday lenders offer, things surely aren’t broken. In fact, customers highly appreciate payday lenders largely because, when used properly, they’re one of the fastest and safest ways out of a negative financial situation. Unfortunately, some people in high places don’t see it this way and are trying to fix something that isn’t broken. Several bipartisan efforts have outlawed the entire industry in certain states, to take aim at the whole industry. On November 4, don’t vote by party; vote for the one that respects our right to financial freedom.
