Politico’s Mike Allen relates a CBN report that neither Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) nor Gov. Sarah Palin (R-AK) will appear at this weekend’s Values Voter Summit hosted by the Family Research Council, in Washington, DC. Palin was set to attend, but the campaign said “plans changed when they were alerted that she needed to go to Alaska Thursday to be with her son as he deployed to Iraq.” She offered to present a short video, but Summit president Tony Perkins rejected it, reportedly saying, “That’s not enough.” McCain will be in Washington with no scheduled events this weekend, but will not be attending the summit. During the Republican National Convention, the campaign abruptly pulled Palin out of an appearance at a pro-life gathering.
Playing it safe? Me thinks so my friends.
September 12th, 2008 at 11:24 amShorter McIIIrd campaign message:
Hey Chumps! We’ve already got your vote by nominating our fundie gal. Duck off and Fie, until November fourth when we need you!
September 12th, 2008 at 11:27 amOne of my favorite movies of all time is “Singin’ in the Rain”. Jean Hagen (who got an Oscar for her performance) beautifully played an exquisite silent movie star who was enormously popular — as long as she never opened her mouth to say anything. When she talked, she not only sounded like an ambulance siren, but she showed all the intelligence of bowling ball.
McCain’s campaign has discovered pretty much the same about Palin. Putting her on display has been a great boon to them, but they must now keep her from opening her mouth.
They could accomplish much the same with a two-dimensional cardboard cutout.
September 12th, 2008 at 11:31 am… oh, i bet they’ll get over it…
September 12th, 2008 at 11:31 amBrilliant, missmolly. Absolutely brilliant.
September 12th, 2008 at 11:35 amHang in there right to lifers and family values voters and American flag lapel pin patriots! We need you on Nov. 4! After that we promise to give you 4 more years to tell America what it’s problems are while we ignore you once again and attend to the neocon agenda. The real McCain/Palin plan.

September 12th, 2008 at 11:42 amFrom the Values Voters Website:
Guess Palin wasn’t ready for a pop quiz so she decided to play hookie. If only the things politicians get away with would worked for me….
September 12th, 2008 at 11:42 amNo surprise that the repug ticket won’t be at the annual Perkins love-fest. Miss Piggy has proven that she’s thick as a brick, and can’t string two coherent thoughts together unless they’re scripted and implanted in her little piggie brain. As for McDeathWarmedOver, he wouldn’t be caught dead (or still dead) at an anti-choice event — wouldn’t be a good message to the moderates who are flocking to this “mavrick” ya know…
Besides, the McUndead/Miss Piggy campaign has already checked off the “intolerant ultra right-wing fringe” box on their checklist, so no need to spend any more time with that group of committed voters who wouldn’t vote for Obama if he was the only name on the ballot…

That’s too damn funny!
September 12th, 2008 at 11:45 amSo the people of the Values Voters summit were upset that Palin would rather be with her son before he goes off to war, than attend their meetings? Typical. It just illustrates what a farce these people are.
It seems the leadership of the far right are just charlatans and frauds, and stories like this confirm it. These people eat their own when they fall out of lockstep.
September 12th, 2008 at 11:49 amBut, but, but . . . McNumbNuts and Cindy McBimbo have the time to show up on “The View” this morning. What a crock. I am getting so tired of their Mutt and Jeff act — a senile old coot and his trophy wife anorexic drug addict.
September 12th, 2008 at 11:50 amThis is the second time I’ve noted this being used as an excuse by McPalin. No one dares question the need for her to run to care for her family duties.
Sorry, no sale. Say bye-bye at the airport, and then pray to sky-fairy for his safety. What- she’s going to fly to Iraq/Afghanistan- where-ever to take care of him? She’s running for VP of the US, not Mother of the Year (I’m betting she’s lost that one anyway!)
September 12th, 2008 at 11:53 amI have no desire to get into McStain’s head, but here’s my take, for what it’s worth:
McStain still hates the Fundies. But he needs them to show up November 4th.
McStain still hates Bush. But he needs his 29%ers to show up November 4th.
McStains hates that only Palin draws the crowds and gets the cheers. But he needs her bubbleheads to show up November 4th.
McStain has never had any respect for women, and continues to use them to advance himself. But he needs them to show up November 4th.
McStain hates Rove. But he needs him if he has a chance of winning his final election.
McStain hates, hates, hates
So he lies, lies, lies
To get votes, votes, votes
I don’t care how much Chris Matthews et al try to cloak him as a man of “honor and integrity”, McStain is a political whore who will say anything to get ahead (I said ahead, not head).

September 12th, 2008 at 11:56 amWait, wait, wait, her son is deploying on Thursday?! I thought for sure she said her son was deploying on 9/11? Was the whole thing yesterday was just a P.R. stunt?
McCain and Palin will take the Family Research Council people’s votes for granted. McCain talks like a bigot, but I’m not convinced he really feels it in his heart. He votes against equal rights for gay people, but does he truly hate them? He supports overturning Roe vs Wade, but is he willing to chain himself to an abortion clinic? I hear Palin supported teaching kids about contraception!
September 12th, 2008 at 11:56 amI’m pretty certain they’ll get over it by Monday. Their grumbling gets them press and makes them seem more important but McCain knows he already has their votes. They know it too.
September 12th, 2008 at 11:56 amTony, your people aren’t singing loudly enough about Sarah, AND the babbling is costing Johnny the Paleos AND the Moderates.
NO DANCE FER YOU TONY!!
September 12th, 2008 at 11:57 amOh, last Thursday. I thought you meant next Thursday. How does being in Alaska yesterday affect your ability to be anywhere through the weekend? Can’t the McCain’s lend Palin an extra plane or something?

Will she wear her pig nose?
September 12th, 2008 at 12:05 pmA little OT, but needs to be addressed. Why aren’t there laws that say that political campaigns can’t send absentee ballots to voters? This is the new way the Republicans are trying to disenfranchise voters. They just did it in Ohio.
Hundreds of Ohio absentee ballot requests using forms distributed by the McCain campaign have been found invalid, elections officials said.
More than 750 applications — about one-third of the number received so far at the Hamilton County Board of Elections — have been invalidated because the forms sent to voters by the presidential campaign of John McCain contained a check-off box that was unnecessary, the Cincinnati Enquirer said Thursday.
What I don’t understand about this is why, if a voter requested an absentee ballot, it came from the McCain campaign. We need to pass a law that says that political campaigns CANNOT send a voter anything that even looks like a ballot.
Everyone out there needs to call their registrar of voters and make sure they are registered to vote. Then request an absentee ballot directly from the registrar. We can’t let them steal this election.
The other “absentee” trick the McCain camp is doing is to send voters in Minnesota and Florida absentee ballots that, if the voter uses the return address on the ballot, will not go where it is supposed to go. They either have PO box on them (not the PO box for the registrar’s office) or they have a return address to a different precinct from where the voter lives.

She already has her very own plane the Republicans leased from Jet Blue. You know it’s her plane because it has her name on it!
September 12th, 2008 at 12:08 pmMaybe that’s why McNeoconwannabe chose her. She does seem to have inflatable qualities.
September 12th, 2008 at 12:08 pmI’m sorry, but I think there is too much attention being payed to the vice presidential candidate, and what she does or doesn’t do.
Let’s concentrate on the one that wants to be in charge.
The question here should be “Why is McSame not going to this Summit?”
I don’t vote for vice-president. I don’t think many people do. However, I do feel that whoever the presidential candidate chooses does reflect on his judgement and the way he intends to staff and run the White House.
September 12th, 2008 at 12:12 pmWe already went through eight years of choosing people for ideology only, rather than for ability. I don’t think it went very well.
Bilbo, having volunteered at our local Dem office, I do know that the Board of Elections provides mailing labels to both Reps and Dems for all absentee ballot applications.
These mailing labels are used to send out campaign materials that might normally be handed out at the polling place, and may also include a “sample ballot”.
But the official absentee ballot comes from the Board of Elections. If Camp McStain is sending out their own, we can only assume that at least some folks will return it instead of the official one, thus invalidating their vote.
Not a good strategy, but you’ll hear no complaints from me!

There is not reason why Palin couldn’t have made it to this event. She now has her own jet. She saw her son off yesterday. She could fly to the event today. Neither of them want to show up at an event like this because it would piss off the moderates they are trying to court.
For the life of me I don’t understand how this can be at all close. Has half this country gone mad?
September 12th, 2008 at 12:15 pmBilbo, please ignore my last post… I just realized that you’re saying McStain’s people are sending these fake ballots to democrats.
Disgusting, but certainly not surprising.

September 12th, 2008 at 12:55 pmA little trouble in Paradise?
September 12th, 2008 at 1:42 pmSo the Family Values people are upset at her because she wants to go see her son off to Iraq. She put her Family before them, so they are furious. The hypocrisy of these people is boundless.
September 12th, 2008 at 1:59 pmAnd what would be the point of a McCain/Palin appearance at a conference discussing values? That’s like saying they’ll attend a honor, dignity and morals convention.
September 12th, 2008 at 2:08 pmGive them a break. Palin had to go home so she could attend the “pray away the gay” conference at her church this weekend. You guys just don’t understand. ?/snark off
