‘Obama Waffles’ featuring racist, stereotyped images sold at Values Voter Summit.

waffles_phixr.jpgAt the Values Voter Summit this weekend, vendors sold an item called “Obama Waffles” featuring a racist cartoon of Sen. Barack Obama (D-IL) on the box front — with “popping eyes and big, thick lips” — and another image of him wearing an Arab-like headdress on its top flap. Its creators, Mark Whitlock and Bob DeMoss, said it was meant as “political satire,” and sold the box for $10 from a booth at the Family Research Council event. CNN’s Lou Dobbs stopped by the booth and exclaimed, “My wife will love this!” A photo shows Dobbs with a box of the mix in his hand.

UPDATE: American News Project interviewed the creators, who said they were just “having a little fun during the election season,” and denied that the box was racist or offensive. Watch it:

    WE. ARE. APPALLED.

  4. Wayne A. Schneider Says:

And the people running this event (Tony Perkins and the Family Research Council) picked Sarah Palin to be McCain's running mate.

  5. Zooey Says:

Even the slightest mention of Palin being female is "sexist," but this is OK?

    Scum-sucking, bottom-feeding, sister/mother f ucking, dumber than snot, RACISTS!!

  6. tom Says:

This appalls but does not surprise me. I have sussed around on some right wing sites and it is not at all uncommon to see the "N-word" used.

Less appalling and even somewhat amusing is the McCain/Failin' Palin web site. Their racism is more subtle and subdued but it is still there. I finally got myself registered and so have been able to see the blog area and read and write comments there. Interestingly enough, there are a number of us serving as "truth police" there (although they call us "trolls"). The level of vitriol, smugness and ignorance is very encouraging. If the posters on the McCain/Failin' Palin are any indication, there are very few of them and they are all as dumb as a box of rocks.

What is particularly amusing about them is that they think the republicans have the election won already. I made a couple posts to set the record straight on some matters of fact but they are immune to the truth. It must really suck to be them. And it will only be worse after November 4 when they realize that McCain screwed the pooch.

  7. stateofthedivision Says:

How Christian of those Values Voters!

I guess they need the revenue to pay the IRS taxes after their "Free Pulpits" endorse McCon-Pullin'.

Shi'ite, Z... even asking QUESTIONS about McCalin's qualifications is considered "sexist" by the uptighty righies. I do find it... curious... that those clowns are getting so BLATANT w/ their racism.

We just had Westmoreland w/ his "uppity" comment, then Goddard... and now this.

How long until McCalin/Pain openly seek the endorsement of the KKK?

  10. upside99 Says:

Unfortunately, these scumbags in the FRC and their AssKlown leader, the ambiguously gendered Tony Perkins think this racism is just what they need to get a 'man of color' not elected.

Can we all say Racist Prix!!!

  11. stateofthedivision Says:

If they get their lying pair elected, Mark Whitlock and Bob DeMoss can market McCon-Pullin' Crackers. Directions:

Racism and hatred must be the values these "values voters" hold dear...

Way to go! Way to show your true face! Now if we can get our "LIBERAL media" to show this...

  16. Roket Says:

Obama Waffles, made with 100% pure racism. Every other box contains a $10 rock of crack cocaine to share with your male prostitute after the summit. But shhhh. Don’t tell anybody. We’ll show those God forsaken libs.

  17. cowboyneok Says:

Someone needs to remind all the "good" Republican KKKristians that Jesus Christ was a COMMUNITY ORGANIZER. Pontius Pilate was a governor like Sarah Palin. In fact, Pontius Pilate had some of the same executive experience as Sarah Palin!

I think I'll ask myself what would Jesus do and vote for the community organizer.

    ____________

The GOOPers have no accomplishments to run on - notice how much Botch is ALREADY a forgotten man? They have no issues to run on - flag burning and gay marriage?

John is coming across as a cranky, incoherent old man whose totally ignored when he's out on his own, and "the lovely Sarah" is rapidly being exposed for the fraud she is.

The "Bridge To Nowhere" BS lost its value. The faux outrage over "sexist" treatment poor Palin received died a quick death. Let's face, these clowns are running out of ammo, and fast. This sort of blatant, in-your-face racism is clearly an act of desperation.

"Values" voters- what a joke. From supporting a war (and all the family destruction that comes with it) started with lies for nothing but greed, all the way to this kind of nonsense. Nice "values".

  21. RUCerious Says:

Of course Lou Dobbs would love it, him being a racist bigot and all...

  22. Hemlock for Gadflies Says:

This Palin nomination has really set them free. They're so sure they're going to win, they can it's time to let their confederate freak flags fly.

  23. nwmuse Says:

I wonder how these religous zealots (you notice I did NOT say Christian) reconcile their love of Jesus and the supposed following of his teachings, (you would have to follow his teachings in order to "be saved"), when it is highly likely that Jesus had dark skin - given where he came from..

I realize they worship the 'light-skinned' Jesus from the paintings and photographs of recent history, I am VERY sure that makes them more comfortable, but it is far more likely that it doesn't represent who he was, what his heritage was, or how he actually looked (like that should matter..?). Jesus was thought to be born in Bethlehem, Judea (now Palestine). He would have looked Middle Eastern and had dark skin and dark hair.

    From the BBC:
    http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/magazine/3958241.stm

I wonder how they get around that when they are going after Obama, who IS a Christian (and not a Muslim), for having dark skin..

  24. Zooey Says:

    "Values Voters"

I'd like to see a list of these so-called values.

Lou Dobbs needs to lose his job -- yesterday.

  25. Hemlock for Gadflies Says:

#28 Hemlock for Gadflies was totally incoherent, and I apologize. That's how enraged I am. I meant to write, "They're so sure they're going to win, they think they can do anything, that it's time to let their confederate freak flags fly."

  26. The Republic of Stupidity Says:

And the US drops a few notches lower in the world esteem ratings.

What is w/ GOOPers? They claim they "love America" so, yet everything they do just causes more and more damage to this country's image.

    Over the NY Times...

    http://www.nytimes.com/2008/09/14/us/politics/14palin.html?_r=1&hp&oref

In Office, Palin Hired Friends and Hit Critics:

WASILLA, Alaska — Gov. Sarah Palin lives by the maxim that all politics is local, not to mention personal.

So when there was a vacancy at the top of the State Division of Agriculture, she appointed a high school classmate, Franci Havemeister, to the $95,000-a-year directorship. A former real estate agent, Ms. Havemeister cited her childhood love of cows as one of her qualifications for running the roughly $2 million agency.

Ms. Havemeister was one of at least five schoolmates Ms. Palin hired, often at salaries far exceeding their private sector wages.

When Ms. Palin had to cut her first state budget, she avoided the legion of frustrated legislators and mayors. Instead, she huddled with her budget director and her husband, Todd, an oil field worker who is not a state employee, and vetoed millions of dollars of legislative projects.

And four months ago, a Wasilla blogger, Sherry Whitstine, who chronicles the governor’s career with an astringent eye, answered her phone to hear an assistant to the governor on the line, she said.

“You should be ashamed!” Ivy Frye, the assistant, told her. “Stop blogging. Stop blogging right now!”

This is from the article Joe Cantwell lined to:

Forum sells 'Obama Waffles' with racial stereotype

    By JOAN LOWY

    Associated Press Writer

WASHINGTON — Activists at a conservative political forum snapped up boxes of waffle mix depicting Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama as a racial stereotype on its front and wearing Arab-like headdress on its top flap.

Values Voter Summit organizers cut off sales of Obama Waffles boxes on Saturday, saying they had not realized the boxes displayed "offensive material." The summit and the exhibit hall where the boxes were sold had been open since Thursday afternoon.
    ___________

Question: Did the organizers cut off sales because they "had not realized the boxes displayed offensive material"... or did it finally sink in, after TWO FULL DAYS of this ugliness, just how badly they were embarrassing themselves, and the country, in the eyes of the entire F-in' world???

I know which answer I'm putting my money on...

So the new Southern Strategy is to hint at racism and then feign ignorance...

Westmoreland (R-Georgia) does not know that uppity is a racially-charged term, yet he spends his time trying to derail Civil Rights progress made in the last 40 years...

The Obama sock monkey creators feign ignorance and then blame the liberal media for the uproar, making themselves out as the oppressed and victims...

    Now this...

  103. katy Says:

TP Please shut down the auto play on this clip

TP, IT'S STILL ON AUTO PLAY.

    MAKE IT STOP!

    superid Says:

Un-Fing-believable. If Obama doesn't use this in an ad he's crazy.

    Why?

  107. Chester Says:

The sad thing is, I guarantee these people don't see this as racist. They can't understand why someone would say this. That's how clueless they are.

  108. Game of Life Says:

There nothing wrong with a person with full lips or dark skin hue. Not a damn thing.

But Sen. Obama's lip aren't as big...the whole damn idea is wrong and should be sold on stormfront.kkk.

It's not remotely funny either. It's sad, ignorant and it's a repug brand they whole dearly.

Look what mcchimpy said on the view about reinstating the old constitution values. racist ahole always slip and then profess with their repug grin, I didn't know. fpcking liars.

  109. Wayne A. Schneider Says:

If it weren't so sickening, it would be funny to watch two racists trying to justify their racism.

  110. jaymark Says:

That these ignorant fools would let themselves be recorded as coming up with this idea tells you how foolish they are. Good grief, this is about as stupid as it could get. And I thought the purple heart band-aids were silly in '04.

  111. dickdata42 Says:

This is nothing compared to what is coming in October. This will be the nastiest, dirtiest, meanest political campaign in the last 100 years.

  112. EugeneDebs Says:

    USpace Says:

What’s wrong with Aunt Gemima? Anyone who doesn’t like her or her pancakes is racist. Obama should be honored, instead of everyone hating on Auntie G. and her tasty treats.

  114. katy Says:

DAMMIT, TP, TURN THAT F'N AUTO PILOT OFF.

scares the shite outta me every time!

  115. ohplease Says:

My Gawd, is there anything that isn't racist to you people? This is way past having that tired and faded look. If you must live in a society where free speech and free thought is taboo, *I* will be the judge to determine what's acceptable. For now, just stand by for instructions.

Blacks are the anchors that White people feel compelled to drag around.

  116. theRepubliKlans Says:

If making racist comments or feminist comments or anti-American comments is under the umbrella of the right to freedom of speech, then so to must be the comments questioning such speech. You can't have it both ways, such is the life we enjoy as proud and grateful Americans.

Of course, if you want to completely ignore the facts and throw false accusations and label anything said about it as "playing the race card" -- you'd probably be perfectly suited to work as a campaign surrogate for McKKKain and Stalin.

  117. EugeneDebs Says:

    ohplease Says:

Something racist and ignorant beyond belief that no one in their right mind wants any part of. Whats wrong ignoramus, bad day at the KKK meeting? Too much starch in your sheets? Tell us something you dumb piece of trash why would it be a free speech issue to run with this racist garbage but somehow NOT be free speech to criticise the racist garbage? Easy now, this will take some higher brain function and we dont want you to strain that substandard brain. Let me help you. NO POSSIBLE READING of the first amendment applies ONLY to what is said and not to criticism OF what is said, you braindead, brainwashed ignorant, racist piece of human debris

  118. ari Says:

Guys, please relax and save the energy for important things. I’m not seeing the racist element here. Rather, I see a caricature of Obama. Remember the Jimmy Carter caricatures? If we really want a colorblind society, we have to stop pulling out the race card every time something offends us. Plus, if we go nuts every time we get offended by something that may or may not be there, we’ll turn off the average voter...many of whom are Republicans. Do you really think you can win an election without those voters?

  119. Tracy__5 Says:

Well at least we know that CNN is racist...and all of those people who thought these photos were real.

  120. Alecto Says:

The last time I checked, Having babies, and traveling with amniotic fluid dripping from one's crotch is a UNIQUELY female experience. There is NO WAY to even speak the sentence "she has given birth to 5 children" without it being a FEMALE statement, ergo a sexist statement. They brought up the children and the lying during her traveling from Texas after making the PISSPOOR choice to put her babies life at risk to travel while leaking his protective fluid from her womb, and now WE are not allowed to discuss it, because it is "SEXIST."

    I DON'T THINK SO.

  121. Alecto Says:

Actually, pull that characture off the box, changing it slightly for copyright reasons, and put it in the oval office eating the McCon/Pullin crackers. That should settle that.

I mean it is not racists is it?

  122. Paul W Says:

Conservatives love to talk about "values" like it's automatically a good thing when in fact, their "values" are nothing more than a cover for hate, intolerance and herd mentality.

  123. charter1966 Says:

These "Value Voter" racists need to be called out! CustomerService@ObamaWaffles.com..Let them have it!!!!!I sure did...whether they actually read it is another story. These guys are probably too busy stuffing their fat faces with waffles between burning crosses

  124. backup Says:

I'll probably be called a racist, but I'll chime in anyway.

It is great that a black man is the Democratic nominee for President. It was great that Hillary was a very serious contender for the top spot. I think it's great that Republicans have a woman on the ticket. I think that it is something very objective that points out that women and minorities are getting a real seat at the table. That's progress.

But, it is causing us some growing pains. Since the founding, it's pretty much been white guys in political office. And it has been those white guys that have been the target of satire.

Let me try this clip to make the point:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qha3pZTflzY

It's McCain. He's old. He's white. He's wearing a cowboy hat (reckless warmongering). He's at a supermarket buying Depends (old). He's falling asleep at the wheel of the straight talk express (old). And putting on lip stick to kiss the behinds of Evangelicals. You should watch it. It's funny.

My point is this: Aren't those stereotypes of McCain? An old white guy. Wouldn't they, or shouldn't they be offensive? Haven't we had that kind of satire from the beginning?

Maybe some of the Palin attacks have been sexist. Maybe this and other attacks on Obama are racist.

But, is satire off limits when it comes to women and minorities? If you portray a black man as being black in a cartoon, and you give him black characteristics, at what point does it become racist? When you portray a woman in a cartoon and you depict the fact that she has breasts, at what point are they distorted to the point that it's sexist?

The two white guys in the thread clip really don't believe they are being racist. The characterizations all have some foundation (I may not buy them, but they're in the news). The charge that he flip-flops. His stand on illegal immigration. The charge that he has Muslim associations. His relationship with the rapper Ludacris.

Again, I'm just asking the question. Reconsider the McCain satire. Should it be off limits? It portrays him as a reckless cowboy. Religious sycophant. Senior that wets himself and falls asleep while driving.

I'm proud that we have gotten to a point where minorities and women enjoy more prevalence in leadership. It's progress.

But, with the new playing field, we have new questions about what is appropriate free speech or satire and what is bigotry.

Of course, I'll listen to those that disagree.

  125. EugeneDebs Says:

    ari Says:

Guys, please relax and save the energy for important things. I’m not seeing the racist element here. Rather, I see a caricature of Obama
    >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

Really? You see a charicature of OBAMA? A charicature makes exggerations of physical characteristics the person REALLY HAS, so you think Obama has those big puffy lips and bulging eyes? Why in fact no he doesnt, he has rather thin lips and fine features. That is a charicture of a RACISTS idea of what Obama SHOULD look like not of OBAMA

    Remember the Jimmy Carter caricatures?
    >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

And the racial stereotype of White people is what again, oh thats right there really ISNT one so its not the same thing but the charicitures of Jimmy exagerated physical charictaristics HE ACTUALLY HAD.

If we really want a colorblind society, we have to stop pulling out the race card every time something offends us.
    >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

If we want a just society in racial terms we cannot buy into the stupid rightwing meme that whenever WE point out racism we are doing something wrong that THEY want to call pulling out the race card. They would have us pretend racism doesnt exist and when we show ANY racist attitude or action then we are pulling out the race card because the problem is NEVER the racism its always pointing the racism out.

Plus, if we go nuts every time we get offended by something that may or may not be there, we’ll turn off the average voter…many of whom are Republicans. Do you really think you can win an election without those voters?<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<

Yes we can win an election without republicans there are far more Dems and independents than Republicans. We dont need to cater to the racists who are NEVER going to vote for Obama anyway.

  126. EugeneDebs Says:

    Tracy__5 Says:

Well at least we know that CNN is racist…and all of those people who thought these photos were real.
    >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

WOW, that was REALLY stupid even for you. So someone photoshopped Sarracuda into a bikini holding a gun and that would play into a negative stereotype of white people HOW? Look we know you are ignorant. Your place at the stupid table is secure you dont have to try so hard to keep rasing the ignorance bar post after post. Try something novel, I dont know a cogent argument a well thought out position hell any thinking at all would be a step in the right direction. This knee jerk idiocy that is your stock and trade is just sad and pathetic dont you ever get tired of humiliating yourself so completely?

  127. EugeneDebs Says:

    >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

Yes they are stereotypes of McCain, you could argue they are unfair, mean and satirical but they are stereotypes of HIM not of his entire race. The Obama charicature is NOT a stereotype of him but an offensive stereotype of his RACE using physical charictaristics HE DOES NOT HAVE.

Maybe some of the Palin attacks have been sexist. Maybe this and other attacks on Obama are racist.
    >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

I havent seen any sexist mysoginistic attacks on Palin, cough them up I will join you in condemning them.

But, is satire off limits when it comes to women and minorities? If you portray a black man as being black in a cartoon, and you give him black characteristics, at what point does it become racist? When you portray a woman in a cartoon and you depict the fact that she has breasts, at what point are they distorted to the point that it’s sexist?
    >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

I love satire and RACIST BS IS NOT SATIRE. Satire is defined as sacrcams and ridicule of vice or folly. Exactly what vice or folly is involved in being black? So it ISNT satire not even CLOSE. To answer your last question when the woman being lampooned has small or average breasts and they are depicted as huge THAT is where it becomes sexist.

The two white guys in the thread clip really don’t believe they are being racist. The characterizations all have some foundation (I may not buy them, but they’re in the news). The charge that he flip-flops. His stand on illegal immigration. The charge that he has Muslim associations. His relationship with the rapper Ludacris.
    >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

I dont believe that. I think they know full well they are being racist and that charicature is NOT based on any reasonable foundation. DOES Obama have big lips? Bulging eyes? Why no HE doesnt its an offensive stereotype based on his RACE not on him. Had they just put him on waffles it WOULD have been legitimate satire of course more fitting for McCain than Obama but legitimate none the less but the racist charicature is flat out racist.

Again, I’m just asking the question. Reconsider the McCain satire. Should it be off limits? It portrays him as a reckless cowboy. Religious sycophant. Senior that wets himself and falls asleep while driving.
    >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

All of which are about HIM not about his race.

I’m proud that we have gotten to a point where minorities and women enjoy more prevalence in leadership. It’s progress.

But, with the new playing field, we have new questions about what is appropriate free speech or satire and what is bigotry.
    >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

There is no free speech issue here at all. No one anywhwere has demaded these people be arrested for their offensive idiocy and that is pretty much all free speech allows. When we criticise them it is as much using OUR free speech as their racist BS is using theirs. As to what is appropriate THAT is the crux of the biscuit. I say racist and sexist BS has no place in the national dialogue and when it rears its ugly head it out to be loudly criticised

  128. backup Says:

EugeneDebs. Thanks for the response. You make some good points.

It could just be ignorance, but I'm honestly not seeing it. The picture on the front of the box doesn't look like stereotypical black guy Obama, it just looks like Obama.

And I questioned some of the other characterizations on the box (especially the rap), but, after looking at it, I honestly believe they are satire of him, Obama. If people think he waffles, his face is on a box of waffle mix. If people question his relationship with a controversial rapper, they pen an Obama rap. His stand on illegal immigration, they put him in a sombrero. His possible Muslim leanings, the Arab hat.

In the McCain example. Falling asleep at the wheel or wearing Depends is not specific to McCain, but to seniors. It's suggesting old people aren't competent to be entrusted with responsibility (they wet themselves and fall asleep behind the wheel). And the cowboy hat? McCain doesn't wear one. It's a stereotypical suggestion that cowboys (typically white and male) act with hubris. They're reckless, unsophisticated, and unwise.

You're right about the free speech issue. If people think it's racist, they should point it out. I agree.

I do think there is jeopardy of finding racism or sexism when it isn't there (maybe this case, maybe not). And diminishing the credibility of the charge when it may be more warranted.

I don't want racism or sexism. But, I do want a free exchange of ideas. I feel undecided about this particular example. But, it does provide good fodder for a discussion on the balance between satire and bigotry in a world where political power is becoming more diverse.

  129. lu Will Says:

    To Back-up

I agree with most of what you say, however the size of his lips or eyes is besides the point, and I don't think most African Americans, (at least the ones who take pride in their physical features that white supermodels and celebrities are obtaining by cosmetic surgery), offensive.

Who should be offended are: Hispanic voters, where they show him wearing a Mexican sombrero erasing the border to "allow more illegal immigrants" and Muslims, where he is shown wearing a turban.

Actually the two hicks for Kentucky are really to ignorant to distinguish between islamic garb and African garb in the photograph they showed with his relatives. But for Hicks, I can see how the 2 would be one in the same.

African Americans may find the idiotic rap with the overuse of ebonics and the claim to be part of the Ludacris posse offensive, but I must say that AA have been aware of this kind of bigotry far longer than most of the young "libs" in the Barack camp.

All of this is more reason to get your butts out and vote, else find ourselves moving back 50 years as a country, if those righties have their way!!!

  130. backup Says:

lu Will. you're right, the sombrero is probably more offensive to Hispanics than Obama. good point about the difference between Islamic and African garb.

And your right about getting out to vote. Regardless of this particular example, conservatives are lacking in terms of being inclusive.

It really is (or should be) a place where all are created equal. At the least, conservatives have failed to convince minorities that they believe in equality and tolerance for diversity. At worst, they actively promote bigotry.

Either way, I believe conservatives are on the wrong side of the diversity issue. And pragmatically, in an ever increasingly diverse society, it is a losing position.

  131. ObamaIsOur44thpres Says:

It's going to be extremely difficult for the ignorant and racist individuals in America to successfully move forward and make progress. They are truly a hindrance in this world !

    How sad they truly are.

But I am so glad that they can't touch nor keep down an intelligent and educated man like Sen. Obama and so many others.

They ignorant people are weak and will fail every single time !

  132. Tracy__5 Says:

"So someone photoshopped Sarracuda into a bikini holding a gun and that would play into a negative stereotype of white people HOW?"

If you don't see the utter nonsense and inaccurate portrait this paints of white people you are no different than racists like David Duke or Luis Farrakan. Pathetic.

  133. Tracy__5 Says:

"I say racist and sexist BS has no place in the national dialogue and when it rears its ugly head it out to be loudly criticised"

Then why do you not see the folly and sexist tone in the Palin bikini photo?

  134. opus Says:

Ugh, when will they learn they just can't do satire... they have no talent for it. The thing is, if these people were honestly just having fun, and didn't realize how in-your-face offensive it is, then they truly are out-of-touch dumbshits, but frankly it is more believable that they knew exactly what they were doing. They just don't get it.

  135. free thinking american Says:

Even if you put lipstick on a racist pig. He's still just a racist pig.

This just adds fuel to my long-held suspicion that the real long-term goal of nominating conservative judges is not so much to overturn Roe v. Wade as it is to eventually overturn Brown v. the Board of Education.

  138. SICKOF IT ALL Says:

SO funny, racism, racism, racism, if you are black yell racism! Its the only card you have!! It will get you your way every time!!! Just watch tv a little closer and you'll see all the cracker honky jokes fly, that are all supposed to be ok!!! But we put a big lipped brother on a waffle box and RACISM!!! makes me SICK!
