No Energy Expert At Senate Hearing Willing To Say That Oil Drilling Is America’s Most Important Issue

Yesterday, the Senate Committee on Energy and Natural Resources held a Bipartisan Energy Summit featuring experts from MIT, Google, Shell, and others. At one point in the hearing, Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse (D-RI) tore into the energy protest House Republicans have been holding for the past several weeks. This political stunt was meant to demand a vote on oil drilling and “attack Democrats for leaving town” in August “without doing something to lower gas prices.”

After listening all the problems currently facing the country, Whitehouse asked the experts whether anyone thought drilling was the “number one issue” right now. Almost nine seconds went by with complete silence:

WHITEHOUSE: Gentlemen, we’re in the middle of a near total mortgage system meltdown in this country. We have a health care system that burns 16 percent of our GDP, in which the Medicare liability alone has been estimated at $34 trillion. We’re burning $10 billion a month in Iraq.

This administration has run up $7.7 trillion in national debt, by our calculation. And there is worsening evidence every day of global warming, with worsening environmental and national security ramifications. In light of those conditions, do any of you seriously contend that drilling for more oil is the number one issue facing the American people today?

[NINE-SECOND SILENCE]

WHITEHOUSE: No, it doesn’t seem so.

Watch it:

House Republicans have spent the past month claiming that their political stunt was “America’s greatest hour” and the “2008 version of the Boston Tea Party.” Not only are they out of step with energy experts, but according to recent polls, the majority of the American public believes that the economy — not drilling — is the most important issue facing the nation. More here and here on why drilling isn’t the answer to lowering gas prices. (HT: Get Energy Smart)

Republicans and their followers can't seem to understand basic math.

We use 25% of the world's oil supply, but only have 3%. As long as we are oil-dependent, drilling here cannot get us the remaining 21% without importing it from other countries.

    25% - 3% = 21%.

I've been saying for months that McCain is WORSE than Bush.

Bush could have overturned Roe v. Wade, but didn't. McCain-Palin would.

Bush could have attacked Iran, but so far hasn't. McCain-Palin would attack Iran AND Russia.

Bush could have pushed for more offshore drilling, but hasn't. McCain-Palin will.

I never thought we could do worse than Bush Cheney, but with McCain-Palin (or is it Palin-McCain?), we will.

They also don't understand basic economics. The typical Republican believes that prices can only be moved by increasing supply, not by reducing demand. This belief runs counter to the fundamental law of economics. Rejecting this belief is on par with rejecting Newton's laws of motion, or believing that the earth is 6,000 years old. In light of the fact that the off-shore wells and the on-shore refineries supplied, in part, by those wells have been shut down for some time due to a series of storms directly related to Global Warming, by what convoluted logic can any reasonable person argue that more wells off-shore can solve the energy problem. The only thing that will be accomplished is that the oil produced by those wells will indirectly add to the Global Warming problem which will produce more and more severe storms which will shut down more wells for a longer period. The only increased drilling that needs to be done is drilling holes in which the deposit the Corporate thieves and their syncophant Repukelian lackeys.

Some enterprising reporter (assuming there are any left) should ask Sarah Palin "Do you support a windfall profit tax on US oil companies to help the citizens with the price of gasoline". That is truly a "gotcha" question. If she answers "no", then the reporter should ask "then why did you do that in Alaska to get every person an extra $1,200 in their yearly check?" If she says "yes" she is going against the agenda of the Republican party.

I won't hold my breath for that to happen. But, just remember every time you fill up your tank, some of what you are paying at the pump is so that every man, woman and child in Alaska can get an extra $1,200. What a sweet deal that is.

  34. Bilbo Hussein Baggins Says:

I read this article over at TPM. It puts words to something that has been bothering me lately. And that is that the money WE THE PEOPLE gave to try to have an honest election is being used to fund the dirtiest and sleaziest lie fest ever. There should be a rule in public financing and that would be if you are caught telling a lie in a commercial paid for by public fnancing money, then you lose the money, period.

People who checked that box did so because they thought they were helping reform elections. They did not intend to finance blatant, outright lies by one candidate against another. They did not intend to participate in the dirtiest, sleaziest campaign in recent history. They did not intend to buy lying attack ads, and facilitate a candidate lying, his running mate lying, his campaign lying.

They thought they were buying a quality product. A campaign that would focus on the issues -- because candidates wouldn't be in the pockets of special interests who would encourage them to, well, lie, cheat and steal their way to an election. Campaign finance reform was supposed to stop that.

Barack Obama's money comes from people who support his ideas and what he stands for. People give to him wholly voluntarily. When I contribute to Obama I do so because he represents my ideals and I support his vision.

John McCain's money doesn't. It comes from average Americans who thought they were doing the right thing. Earlier this year, McCain made a big deal about public financing of this election.

I say John McCain has made a mockery of it. He has taken the hard earned money of Americans of all stripes to run the most un-American campaign.
John McCain, I want my money back. If this is the kind of campaign you are going to run, pay for it your damn self.

  35. unbelievable Says:

It's a fossil fuel, so therefore it is limited in supply, like oil, but because it's more abundant than oil, it's cheaper. However, it requires extraction and refining, so it's definitely NOT clean energy like solar, thoug it is cleaner to burn than crude.

It sounds a lot like oil in terms of how it is handled. But I do think most people see nartural gas as a temporary, intermediate solution while other forms are developed.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Natural_gas

Natural gas is a gaseous fossil fuel consisting primarily of methane but including significant quantities of ethane, propane, butane, and pentane—heavier hydrocarbons removed prior to use as a consumer fuel —as well as carbon dioxide, nitrogen, helium and hydrogen sulfide.[1] It is found in oil fields (associated) either dissolved or isolated in natural gas fields (non-associated), and in coal beds (as coalbed methane). When methane-rich gases are produced by the anaerobic decay of non-fossil organic material, these are referred to as biogas. Sources of biogas include swamps, marshes, and landfills (see landfill gas), as well as sewage sludge and manure by way of anaerobic digesters, in addition to enteric fermentation particularly in cattle.

Natural gas is often informally referred to as simply gas, especially when compared to other energy sources such as electricity. Before natural gas can be used as a fuel, it must undergo extensive processing to remove almost all materials other than methane. The by-products of that processing include ethane, propane, butanes, pentanes and higher molecular weight hydrocarbons, elemental sulfur, and sometimes helium and nitrogen.

The major difficulty in the use of natural gas is transportation and storage because of its low density. Natural gas pipelines are economical, but are impractical across oceans. Many existing pipelines in North America are close to reaching their capacity, prompting some politicians representing colder areas to speak publicly of potential shortages.

  37. Bob Says:

If somehow they could set up a competition and give up say 1000 acres for offshore drilling and the same area for renewable, alternative energy and measure the direct impact of fueling, say, a comparable amount of homes, and the timeframe that happens, it would be a great demonstration.

Natural Gas is between 85 and 95% methane, but in the context of exploration and production it is not renewable. Methane itself could be considered 'renewable' since it is the basic by-product of carbon-based reactions.

  38. unbelievable Says:

There is something called "biogas" that is renewable, but still not clean like solar:

Methanogenic archaea are responsible for all biological sources of methane, some in symbiotic relationships with other life forms, including termites, ruminants, and cultivated crops.

Landfill gas is created from the decomposition of waste in landfills. If the gas is not removed, the pressure may get so high that it works its way to the surface, causing damage to the landfill structure, unpleasant odor, vegetation die-off and an explosion hazard. The gas can be vented to the atmosphere, flared or burned to produce electricity or heat. Experimental systems were being proposed for use in parts Hertfordshire, UK and Lyon in France.

The U.S. buys a lot more from China than China's consumers buy from America each year. Because of that gap in trade, China ends up with about a billion new U.S. dollars every day.

What do the Chinese do with all that money? They lend it back to the U.S. so Americans can buy more from them. China doesn't just give Americans credit cards or a bank loan. Instead, one of the main ways China lends that money to the U.S. is by buying bonds issued by Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. The agencies were set up solely to help Americans get cheaper mortgages, but they've become key parts of the global economic system.

We could easily be way down that road of energy independence and alternative fuel had those paths not been stifled. We certainly should not allow energy policy to be a secret conglomerate among oil companies. There seems to be something wrong with 'free market' controlling National Security interests. This country is at record debt and those same oil companies have seen record profits because our leaders are morally bankrupt.

I think they are too clouded by their virtual tax-exempt status under Fascist rule to care about their integrity. So, perhaps their declining viewership, might be the catalyst they need to be less partisan.
Though, Time Magazine (at least the online version) and AP have actually been honest about McCain-Palin recently, which has been quite surprising…

I am very disappointed in MSNBC and won't be watching any of the election coverage by David Gregory. I wonder what his ratings were the other night when they had the forum on where Obama and McBush spoke. I bet they were considerably lower than when Olbermann and Matthews moderated. All I watch on MSNBC now is Countdown and Rachel Maddow.

I think that AP is finally doing their job because they were very embarrassed by how it looked like they had taken a hard right turn. Hopefully they will keep it up. I've also noticed that ABC (surprising) has been calling McBush and Palin on their BS, mostly through Jake Trapper.

So now, Obama and the Democrats and maybe Move-On need to start hitting McCain/Palin with hard-hitting ads that will show the people in this country who they really are and put lie to their claim of being "mavericks"

Two Presidents named Bush have run up as much national debt as all of the other Presidents combined, which even includes the high Reagan budget deficits. Now that is some record.

If someone would plaster this on the front pages of MSM newspapers and websites, the whole inane (insane?) "Drill here, drill now!" issue would be dead in one stroke:

I have come to the conclusion that if all the people around the world would exhale at a 50% rate, instead of the going rate of 100% we could effectively eliminate half of the problems we have today in regards to the greenhouse gas effect. We would notice the results in only one day!
I know it's hard to teach old dogs new tricks, but we have to start somewhere.

  79. gus smith Says:

Satirev, I totally appreciate your point of view. Why subject two decent men, Obama and Biden, to the losing proposition of turning our Titanic away from the iceberg(not that there are any left). But putting McCain and Palin in charge would be even worse that giving Bush ANOTHER crack. They are like addicts, they know how to control the world...NOT. And they would fake it and continue a path of destruction while saying "I know how to ..." Fill in the blank: already used are "Find Bin Laden" and "win wars".

Four years are too little to have much impact on the disasterous state of affairs. Obama will take the brunt of the voter's ire because he will not be able to accomplish miracles in the short time before the next campaign cycle. But in reality, yes the repugs should clean up their mess.

This is another example that the "old world jounalism of Murrow, Cronkite and Rather is dead and buried. In the case of the Time Magazine reporter Ms Tumulty, she seems to think the finding out the who, what, where, when and how have been replaced with a steno pad, which she records what ABC said in rebuttle to the complaint of Congressman Kucinich. There is a great disconnect with what happened and the points made by ABC. She asks little of no questions to ABC. She takes what is handed to her and repeats it vebatim and then calls that reporting. I call is stenography. Lida Sohbet sohbet sesli chat Gelinlik Modelleri

If you’re referring to Karl Schwarz’ articles, if they are true, how will we ever know unless the news media gets involved without bias? The military under orders not to speak out may never convey Karl Scharz’ expose’. Sesli Sohbet If Cheney was truly involved in 9/11 and protected in some way, then he’s being protected by what may be going on in the Caspian Sea area as well. That pre-9/11 August 10, 2000 article drives the point home to me that Cheney had a vested interest in the oil at the Caspian Sea area (before 9/11). Fx15 From all I’ve read in Schwarz’ articles, he claims the Taliban was working on a deal with Argentina with that pipeline in the Caspian Sea area and UNOCOL wanted the deal instead. Orjinal Lida It’s too much to get into here and I’m not able to convey in here what Schwarz has presented in his articles. Sikis Dig into Schwarz’ articles to learn more about the unnamed soldier’s experiences related to so-called Black Ops missions in the Caspian Sea area in Schwarz’ article.
