McCaskill: ‘Sarah Palin Has Been An Earmark Queen In Alaska. That’s The Facts.’

This week on “The View,” Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) claimed that Sarah Palin had never requested earmarks as governor. Today on ABC’s “This Week,” campaign spokeswoman Carly Fiorina repeated the lie, claiming Palin did not request earmarks for Alaska:

FIORINA: Sarah Palin as governor stood up and said, I know earmarks are corrupting. We must ask for less of them–

STEPHANOPOLOUS: But she still requested them.

FIORINA: As governor she did not. [...]

MCCASKILL: Sarah Palin has been an earmark queen in Alaska. That’s the facts.

Stephanopolous corrected Fiorina when she falsely claimed that Palin had “rejected the money for the Bridge to Nowhere.” Watch it:

As ThinkProgress has documented, Palin has aggressively pursued earmark funding for her state as governor, requesting nearly $750 million in federal funds, “by far the largest per-capita request in the nation.” Just last March, Palin wrote an op-ed in the Fairbanks Daily News-Miner, explaining that her “role at the federal level is simply to submit the most well-conceived earmark requests we can.”

Fiorina’s assertion that it is a “fact” that Palin “rejected the money for the Bridge to Nowhere” is wrong. Once Congress removed the designation for the bridge from the earmark, Palin took the money and redirected it to other projects.

As Keith Ashdown, chief investigator for the watchdog group Taxpayers for Common Sense, pointed out, Palin’s constant claim to have said “thanks but no thanks” to the bridge earmark is simply a lie: “To say ‘thanks but no thanks’ would imply that they didn’t take the money. And they got every dime of it.”

I don’t understand why the Obama surrogates are having such a tough time enunciating “just the facts, ma’am”

Palin campaigned on the bridge to nowhere (2006) after congress pulled the funding (2005)

Palin has requested, and received, more earmarks per capita than any town or state in history of the nation

Palin hired lobbyists as mayor and as governor to get as many earmark dollars as possible

Palin kept the phu*cking bridge money anyway, wasted approx. $20 million building a gravel road to the bridge that never was

Both McStain and Palin are LIARS

    KISS, Dems!

Is there any truth to Fiorina’s statement that Obama sought more earmark money that Palin? She was acting as if Palin’s requests for earmarks were but a drop in the bucket compared to the amount Obama has procured.

I’m waiting for somebody in the McCain/Palin camp to claim that the federal money Palin begged for and got isn’t “earmarks” — and then dream up some other cute name for it. Like “infrastructure subsidies” or “progress stimulus payments” or something.

My head is still reeling from Palin’s “explanation” that the difference between HER earmarks and everybody else’s is that SHE was above-board in her requests whereas everybody else got theirs under the table. Is anybody actually idiotic enough to believe this crapola?

  9. tom says:

The McNumbNuts/Failin’ Palin ticket is running around screaming “pick us — we can do things right” (Management 101). There are two things wrong with their claim.

First of all, their records contradict their claim.

Second, the presidential election is about “finding the right things to do” (Leadership 101). In other words, it’s about leadership, not management. They are clueless about this — they have no acceptable priorities, vision or direction to offer this country other than those which have failed us for the past eight years.

Obama/Biden can own the leadership debate and they need to elevate the conversation to this level.

  10. Tahut says:

I’m waiting for the MSM to hammer home the fact that Queen Palin of Earmarks was for the bridge as long as the Feds footed the entire bill. Once they pulled out and said, here’s all the money you’re gonna get, you have to cough up the rest outta your own funds, that’s when she was against it. Lucky for her, it happened at the same time Ted Stevens hung himself out to dry.

  11. dbadass says:

It’s the amount per capita that matters.

There are approx. 660,000 people in the entire state of Alaska
There are approx. 12,800,000 people in Illinois

In other words, the state of Illinois has 20 times more people than the state of Alaska.

Great point, MissM! Especially since a governor cannot insert an earmark into a congressional bill, it must be done by that state’s congressperson or senator.

Let’s see… Alaska… Ted Stevens? Don Young? Yes, those are some above-board congress folks!

And she told Gibson that her requests for research dollars came from “institutes”, implying that these are non-profit educational entities, when, in fact, they are coming from commercial fishing “research” facilities. An industry that her husband works in. Hmmmm…

    @Tom

    Just a friendly critique:

    1) First of all, their records contradict their claim.

Queen Palin of earmarks said in her interview with Cahrlie Gibson that the American people don’t want politicians with big, fat resumes of accomplishments.

    2) Second, the presidential election is about “finding the right things to do”

Queen Palin of Earmarks firmly believes that politicians should be unblinkingly focuses at all times on doing the right thing. Having to search for solutions subtracts from the focus thingy.

It seems the repug$ have their eyes focused on a particular section of the voting public that don’t believe reasoning and thinking are prerequisites for the job.

    ______________________________________________________________

Palin is comparing apples to oranges and hoping nobody will notice.

First, she is comparing the amount of earmarks she has “accepted” to the amount of earmarks Obama has “requested”, which is about three times what Obama actually got approved.

Second, not all earmarks Obama requests are for his home state. He has requested earmarks for projects he considers worthwhile at the national level, or wherever they may be. This is one of the things that Senators do (but not Governors).

And then, of course, there’s the “per-capita” difference between Illinois and Alaska, which Palin never seems to figure in.

Oh, and let’s not forget that Obama’s “nearly a billion in earmarks” (which was actually about three quarters of a billion) was over the space of three years. Palin hasn’t even been Governor that long.

So yeah — there’s some “truth” to the statement that “Obama sought more earmark money than Palin”. But the statement has about as much validity as pointing out that a long-haul trucker consumes more fuel annually than the person who purchases the goods he hauls.

  21. ralph the wonder llama says:

In Sarah Palin’s own words, from an op-ed she publisher in March of this year:

This year, we have requested 31 earmarks, down from 54 in 2007. Of these, 27 involve continuing or previous appropriations and four are new requests. The total dollar amount of these requests has been reduced from approximately $550 million in the previous year to just less than $200 million.

By my calculations, Sarah Palin admits to seeking “almost” $750 million. In earmarks. In TWO YEARS,

    Yeah, some “reformer”.

  27. ralph the wonder llama says:

There are two issues here. Or rather, one issue and one non-issue.

The issue is the McCain campaign’s willingness to lie to create a narrative that isn’t supported by reality. In that sense, the earmark crap is important and shows that Sarah Palin is hardly the “breath of fresh air” that they’re trying to sell her as.

The non-issue is earmarks themselves. It’s a McCain non-issue, something he has cooked up to sell himself as a “reformer”. How big an issue is it for government spending? Let’s see…

In FY 2008, earmarks accounted for $15 billion in spending. In other words, a little more than half of one percent of teh total budget.

or, put another way, about what we spend EVERY FIVE WEEKS in Iraq.

Yeah, Big John’s sure gonna be able to pay for his tax cuts for the wealthy with that savings. Good luck with that.

  30. tom says:

    Copano_Texian Says:

For every dollar of tax that Alaska sends to Washington, D.C., about $1.83 flows back. That is the comparison. What don’t you understand about that?

  31. John Henry says:

“Is there any truth to Fiorina’s statement that Obama sought more earmark money that Palin?”

    Here’s what bugs me:

Alaska just disbursed $1.2 billion in what they call a Permanent Fund Dividend for their oil revenues. Each citizen got roughly $3200 on 9/11 – I know she most likely picked it for its effect. If you are a family a four you get roughly $13,000. Its not difficult to figure out why she’s so popular. Alot of Alaskans will use the money to pay for bills. But, the retail stores are also racking up big screen TV sales this weekend.

So, we pay for their investment while they spend their oil income on pure consumption goods. That makes no sense to me. Michael Kinsley pointed out that net net Alaska in 2005 – the latest numbers – received more tax dollars than it sent to Washington.

  32. unbelievable says:

Tahut Says: Thanks for the update! I wknew that Alaska was the leading sow in the pork barrel, but wasn’t sure about Obama.

I think Conservatives have given earmarks a bad name because the find ALL federal funding to be unacceptable. They really don’t understand that some of these earmarks are valid and benefit the American people when they fund intrastructure, new national parks, etc.

That’s the problem with an abaolutistic mindset…

  33. ralph the wonder llama says:

    “So freaking what”?

    I’ll tell ya “so freaking what”;

McSame is the one campaigning against earmarks. He’s the one who tried to sell Sarah Palin as some “anti-earmark reformer”, in the face of massive evidence to the contrary.

  36. Tahut says:

The thing that really bugs me about this is Ted Stevens was NEVER ashamed of his earmarks.

Guido the Loving OBGYN, most Congress-critters I know go out of their way to get them for projects in their states so the State doesn’t have to raise taxes on the citizens. Except for McCain.

  37. pete says:

Sorry stupid troll but, Ms. Palin didn’t “kill the bridge”. What actually happened is that the bridge was “killed” by the legislature and Ms. Palin is trying to take credit. That’s what honest people call a “lie”. Look it up.

The US government takes tons of tax money out of Alaska for oil and gas, and Alaskans would like to see some of that money back in their state, so freaking what.

First you need to PROVE your claim, which is incorrect. It’s the opposite. Alaska taxes the oil they send to the lower 48 so that we generate 89% of their tax revenues. Not the other way around as you falsely claim.

Secondly, Alaskans only pay $5K per person n Federal taxes, but take $15k per person in Federal funds. They TAKE 3 times more than they pay, on top of the earmarks.

Thirdly, the biggest problem is the hypocrisy. McCain claims to be against earmarks, but Palin took them. Far more than her state puts into the pot.

You might wanna learn something rather than lie. It’s making you conservatives disliked more than you already are.

She took Alaska’s money for Alaskans, like I said, so what? As for Alska getting $1.83 back for every dollar, I would bet that is not money paid by corporations or taxes on oil and gas, just federal taxes on private income. How much tax from oil and gas does New Jersey pay, or Delaware? I bet nothing, they don’t help with energy, they just use what other states, REDSTATES produce then complain about the prices. Enjoy your $6 a gallon gas this week, you don’t want to help, so pay up suckers.

  47. Copano_Texian says:

The feds get money for every drop of oil and cubic foot of gas pumped out of the ground, that’s the money I’m talking about. If you don’t know about that, it’s your own fault for not knowing where or how the energy you use is produced. They take this money, from states like Alaska and Texas and send it to blue staes who don’t want to help produce energy, like California. If you don’t want to help produce energy, or refine oil and gas, then shut up and pay up. By the way Texas produces more wind power than any other state as well, so greenies, put up or shut up.

Clearly, the Newsweek/FOX/Gallup/USA TODAY/CNN polls attempting to lie about the closeness of this race don’t understand that We the People now have valid ways of getting the Revolution broadcast!

I attended the Welcome Home rally for Sarah Palin this morning. Hooo. It was an experience. About a thousand (maybe) hard-core Palin supporters showed up to hear her speak at the new Dena’ina Convention Center in downtown Anchorage.

After shaking it off with a good double shot of espresso, and a brisk walk back to my car, it was time to head to the Alaska Women Reject Palin rally. It was to be held outside on the lawn in front of the Loussac Library in midtown Anchorage. Home made signs were encouraged, and the idea was to make a statement that Sarah Palin does not speak for all Alaska women, or men. I had no idea what to expect.

Never, have I seen anything like it in my 17 and a half years living in Anchorage. The organizers had someone walk the rally with a counter, and they clicked off well over 1400 people (not including the 90 counter-demonstrators). This was the biggest political rally ever, in the history of the state. I was absolutely stunned. The second most amazing thing is how many people honked and gave the thumbs up as they drove by. And even those that didn’t honk looked wide-eyed and awe-struck at the huge crowd that was growing by the minute. This just doesn’t happen here.

So, if you’ve been doing the math… Yes. The Alaska Women Reject Palin rally was significantly bigger than Palin’s rally that got all the national media coverage! So take heart, sit back, and enjoy the photo gallery. Feel free to spread the pictures around (links are appreciated) to anyone who needs to know that Sarah Palin most definitely does not speak for all Alaskans. The citizens of Alaska, who know her best, have things to say.

“Bottom line, Palin killed the bridge”

Are we playing bullshit, good. Bullshit!

In the Governor’s full press release here on 9/21/2007 she said:

“Ketchikan desires a better way to reach the airport, but the $398 million bridge is not the answer,” said Governor Palin. “Despite the work of our congressional delegation, we are about $329 million short of full funding for the bridge project, and it’s clear that Congress has little interest in spending any more money on a bridge between Ketchikan and Gravina Island,” Governor Palin added. “Much of the public’s attitude toward Alaska bridges is based on inaccurate portrayals of the projects here. But we need to focus on what we can do, rather than fight over what has happened.” The Department of Transportation has approximately $36 million in federal funds that will become available for other projects with the shutdown of the Gravina Island bridge project. Governor Palin has directed Commissioner Leo von Scheben to review transportation projects statewide to prepare a list of possible uses for the funds, while the department also looks for a more affordable answer for Gravina Island access.

She is clearly saying the federal government will not finance the full cost of the bridge. So we have to look at other solutions. She then went on to imply that the value of the BtN had been mischaracterized as pork.

Shooting dead fish in a barrel is not killing it. She’s not saying thanks but no thanks. She saying damn we can’t afford it now that the Gubment is not paying for it. The welfare queen as Governor. Reagan would have loved her!

    California Quick Facts

California ranks third in the Nation in refining capacity and its refineries are among the most sophisticated in the world.

California’s per capita energy consumption is low, in part due to mild weather that reduces energy demand for heating and cooling.

California leads the Nation in electricity generation from non-hydroelectric renewable energy sources, including geothermal power, wind power, fuel wood, landfill gas, and solar power. California is also a leading generator of hydroelectric power.

California imports more electricity from other States than any other State.

In 2000 and 2001, California suffered an energy crisis characterized by electricity price instability and four major blackouts affecting millions of customers.

Maybe the media is starting, just starting, to take Amy Poehler as Hillary Clinton’s advice last night on SNL: “grow a pair, or borrow mine.”

Although they let a few things out to give themselves credibility, on the whole the media belongs to the right. They will do what they must do to get mccain elected. That is what they are getting paid for.

This is a huge battle against all odds for the democrats. The right has sucessfully taken over all forms of media used by most Americans to get their facts.

They achieved this well over 10 years ago and they have been prolific every since.

They have, I believe, sucessfully framed the progressives as weak and damaging to the US. This is our own fault. We allowed it to happen.

When did we rally behind one of our own in a crunch?
Jimmy Carter when the gop sucessfully framed the nixon recession around Carters neck?
Bill Clinton when newt was hacking him apart?
Hillary when she tried to get us decent health care?
Al Gore when he was belittled and slandered in 2000?
John Kerry when the swiftboaters were spreading thier lies?

The one thing the republicans have and it works is unity even when their man is wrong.

We can’t even unite behind one that is right, repeatedly.

If mccain wins this election then we have no one to blame but ourselves.

Most independants would swing our way if we did not let the republicans define us. The only way we can do that is to stand together, united against them.

I see more infighting among progressives now than ever and it is working to get us defeated. The ugly primary and it’s lasting effect are a prime example.

Why is Hillary not taking on palen? Because we are not united as a party and she doesn’t feel like a member of the team…..and is probably bitter and with some good reason.

How can we unite our country when we can’t even unite our party?

Forgive me, Fred, but your take on the situation is incorrect in one major respect: Hillary has built up enourmous capital within the party, and her performance at the convention was flawless – she is in the near-exact position that Dean was in, after losing in the primaries. She can in essence write her own ticket, legislatively speaking, and is now the Senate Bigfoot. If this were a football game, we would be using her formidable talents as a blocker: she would be the perfect foil to Leiberman, and Crackerbarrel Graham.

We should start a “Hillary for Senate leader” campaign; she’d be unstoppable in that position, and the republican senators would have to watch their rhetoric closely, or risk having their past Palin comments thrown back in their moralizin’ mugs.

Stephanopolous is really a lousy talking head. First he said “Sarah Palin stopped the bridge to nowhere but kept the money”. The first part of that statement is untrue. The second half of his statement was true, but he allowed Carly to run off in the mouth in a different direction and she never addressed the issue. I wonder if these McBush sycophants will ever tire of telling lies for the Republican party.

  97. Bilbo Hussein Baggins says:

The other thing that Stephanopolous should have done would have been to point out that sure, Obama has asked for more earmarks than Palin, considering the fact that Illinois has 10 times as many people as Alaska. When you divide the earmarks by the number of people, I believe Alaska comes to $320 per person and Illinois comes to $22 per person.

The effectiveness of the lies, in a year when comatose fleas should capably beat the shrewdest Republican, is telling — not about the candidates’ venality, but about the electorate’s want: This isn’t an election about change. It’s an election about extending the denial that made the last eight years possible. Many Americans, maybe most, want to convince themselves that America’s moral authority and example is undiminished despite the last eight years. (And who can blame them? Who doesn’t wish it weren’t so?) The last thing those brave Americans want is change. They want leadership that validates their delusion. Palin-McCain is their narcotic bridge to nowhere.”

  104. Nat says:

This talking point has been repeated may times (and it usually goes by without any retort from an Obama surrogate):

Obama has never bucked his party.

    The proper response should be:

Americans agree with Democrats on the Iraq War, abortion, immigration, the economy, taxes, health care, education, social security, the environment, etc. so Obama doesn’t have too much to buck his party on. On the other hand, McCain has had many chances to buck a party that’s on the wrong side of almost every issue and to move into the mainstream but he’s chosen to stick with Bush 90 percent of the time. In fact, he’s moved further out of the mainstream to appease the far right during this election season.

  105. Keith says:

I wish some reporter would point out that we must eliminate 407,000 million-dollar earmarks in order to balance our budget (FY ending this month). There are 2/3rds of corporations paying NO taxes. There are billionaires paying 7-10% federal tax. Etc., etc.

None of the colleges have entry requirements.”

They can’t count. It adds up to FOUR transfers. It’s unusual that noone can remember her at any college. No evidence that she was in a club or worked on a newspaper or radio.

Actually, it’s not the first time. They made the same argument for Bush. The thing they are missing is that if one has to have “executive experience” to be President, then McCain is not qualified. He has zero executive experience. He has never had a job that was not paid for by the government.

I wonder why a talking head doesn’t ask that question. What about McCain’s executive experience. And then there’s the inconvenient truth that Bush, the “executive” President was a spectacular failure.

There’s absolutely no reason for Hillary to besmerch her own character in attempting to take Sarah to the mat. Hillary’s intelligence and reputation speak for itself. And now, so does Palin’s.

How would it besmerch Hillary’s character to call palen out on her claims to represent the feminists movement in America?

Who could garner more media attention right now than Hillary if she were to speak out on the hypocricy exhibited by palen on every womens issue?

My comments go to the heard of divisions in the democratic party that get us defeated when we go against an opponant who’s constituants will support them whether they agree with them or they are right or not.

We agree on these issues and we still are divided. Most Americans want to be on the winning side.

See “The rich get respect and deserve it even if they came by their wealth through criminal activity”

We are fighting a machine that has the deck stacked against us. We must defeat the republican candidate and we don’t have equal access to the media that all Americans use to make their decisions.

We cannot do that if we are not united against them.

Wow, I come back to this thread and discover that a troll is trying to shift the topic to tax money on Alaskan oil and gas. No, that’s not the topic of this thread. Palin’s constant shuffle-quickstep about earmarks is the topic of this thread.

Earmarks aren’t illegal, and while they have a bad rep (probably justified) because of their use to feather the nests of fat cat lobbyists and their clients, much earmark money goes to worthwhile project. I have issues with the entire earmarking system, but that’s another thread.

I don’t have a problem with Sarah Palin playing the system to get earmark money. What I have a problem with is that she does it, denies it, and when forced to admit it she defends her earmarks while condemning everyone else’s. That, and she’s on a ticket that has made the abolition of earmarks a major issue.

Palin is now telling the audiences that Obama has asked for an “obscene” amount of earmarks for his state. But, if you compare his earmark requests with hers, his pales in comparison. She has asked for something like $398 per person while Obama’s is $22 per person. Too bad some talking head doesn’t call her on that.

The failed energy policy that has brought us $5/gal gas was done behind closed doors and we aren’t even allowed to know the details. Cheny and the oil companies penned it and put it into effect.

The only way to change this is to get the corporate politicians out of the whitehouse.

Notice that every republican that speaks support mccain even though they were disparaging him 4 years ago. The right has control of the media and is on every channel with no opposing views.

Every democrat that speaks should stop trying to be objective and benevolent to the right. They get no such recipocal treatment and the end result is that the democrats look weak.

With that money she is giving every man, woman and child in Alaska an extra $1,200 (making their total take this year $3,400). It’s no wonder she is so popular. Any governor who could send every citizen a check for $1,200 would be popular.

But, the bad news is that the oil companies are passing on the cost of this windfall profit tax to us at the pump.

They also need to do a commercial quoting that preacher who was dissing Jews in the sermon he gave at her church. Point out that she knew what the sermon was about (they sent out a notice), she attended, and she did not get up and walk out. The getting up and walking out is what they threw at Obama, so we need to throw it back at her. Then the DNC needs to play that ad heavily in Florida.

Really, the poll below was showing Obama ahead when the msm were showing mccain ahead, now even this poll is showing mccain ahead. You must not discount the palin effect of at the very least rallying the extreme right wingers and in doing so creating a wave of propaganda and good will that is pushing their poll numbers up. It certainly wasn’t mccains speech that caused this.

    poll

Hillary is showing her level of class here – there are plenty of other Congressional women out there (like Claire Haskill today who handed Fiorina her tits on a silver platter on the Stephenopoulis show) who can and will take Palin on. Hillary’s on another level of class and stature entirely.

Why is Hillary above this fray? If the battle for our very existance is going on, which I believe is the case, why would she sit on the sidelines.

This is not about class. We have had the better class of people for a long time…..forever actually. That will not get us where we want to be.

I would note that I did not single Hillary out, I merely used her as one example. I’m calling for every single democrat and progressive to unite for this monumental cause.

Democrats should not be talking about what a noble hero mccain is. Maybe not bring it up at all but certainly stop praising them. They show no inclination to recipocate on such good will, in fact, they capitalize on it.

Basically, Socialism is for the rights of the state, not the individual. It thrives on creating and maintaining Victim groups, it thrives on growing government in the name of creating a Utopia, a perfect society, which is unattainable. It lives on growing more government to ‘fix’ the problems they have already created. It leads to higher unemployment, and it keeps people down. It loves to demonize the rich, even though their are many rich socialists, who of course are never demonized. Many famous Communists have said that the purpose of Socialism is to prepare the people for Communism.

A rational, intelligent, person who views recent political trends in the U.S. would realize that saying “the Left always moves left” is an utterly absurd statement, over and above the historical fact that ALL societies are cyclical. Sometimes the ruling class dominates and sometimes the populists dominate. It has little to do with ideology.

First of all, there is no Left in this country. I haven’t seen an honest leftist in nearly 40 years.

Second. The moronic Right has moved so far right that they have destroyed the GOP and are well on the way to destroying anything once admirable in the American experiment.

How in the hell do you know??? You’ve travelled around the 100 billion suns in the Milky Way and around the 100 billion other galaxies, have you?!?! I hate religious people like you. There are good religious people, however.

Once you have called Obama communistic, what is there left to call the many millions of Americans or every other developed country in the world that are to the left of Obama?

  206. pete says:

Then there’s the blind partisanship of the Reichwing authoritarian. Since they hate any who oppose them they figure, in their ignorance, that all opposition must be “from the Left”. Since they don’t ever weigh an idea on it’s merits they can’t conceive that the vast majority of thinking people do just that.

I didn’t “turn” on Chimpy, and all things GOP, because of their ideals. I “turned” on them because of their contempt for the governed and disastrous results. I could even live with a certain amount of dirty dealing if they were effectively governing.

Alas, they are not governing effectively and haven’t even come close. Indeed, they have done more damage to our society than any generation of politicians since the Vietnam era, if not the generation who made the Civil War inevitable.

  207. Keith says:

    USpace,
Since 65% of Americans are in favor of universal/single-payer/government-run healthcare and Obama is not—–that puts 65% of Americans to the left of a communist!!!

  208. pete says:

That’s the thing, Keith. These idiotic trolls don’t even know what a communist is. It’s just the dirtiest name they can think of short of a particular racial epithet which would result in an immediate ban or, in the case of talking heads, professional suicide. Whenever you see a troll apply “communist”, “socialist”, or even “librul” to Sen. Obama one can assume it’s just a substitute for n___er.

  209. Keith says:

Pete, I’ve been “left-of-center” for 40 years and I don’t know any American communists. England, Germany, Turkey yes, but not Americans.

There’s mountains of evidence of the damage the right has done. The first 200 years of the USA (before Reagan) only gave us $0.9 trillion in debt, for instance. But if you are in denial, then I guess you are in denial.

  212. Game of Life says:

I’m glad Sen. Obama is fighting back with the truth.

    http://www.cnn.com/2008/POLITICS/09/13/campaign.wrap/index.html>Sen. Barack Obama’s spokesman

on Saturday accused Sen. John McCain of “cynically running the sleaziest and least honorable campaign in modern presidential campaign history.”

    repugs are sleazy as hell.

  213. pete says:

Ya got that right, GOL. And even the Reichwingers are finding it hard to deny. They are adopting the “ends justify the means” defense. What I can’t figure out is why so many continue to defend a platform built on lies. In the reality based community, if one needs to lie to make a point, it’s not worth making. In Reichworld? Not so much.

  214. pete says:

Very true, Keith. But I wasn’t talking about the intrinsic damage like the economy. I was refering to the polarization of the people. What’s strange though is that so many still think in terms of “Right vs. Left” when the real divide is between “radicals” and the vast moderate majority. It seems that anyone “Left” of Bill0 is being demonized.

Neoconservatives plan Project Sarah Palin to shape future American foreign policy

A former Republican White House official, who now works at the American Enterprise Institute, a bastion of Washington neoconservatism, admitted: “She’s bright and she’s a blank page. She’s going places and it’s worth going there with her.”

    I’d rather not.

  216. 1984 says:

“On board Mrs Palin’s campaign plane, journalists were told by stewards that she was watching in the VIP section of the charter’s satellite TV system. As reporters howled with laughter during the five-minute skit, there was reportedly silence from the front of the plane.”

  217. the Lone Voice of Reason says:

Troopergate” — began before Palin was chosen as Sen. John McCain’s running mate. Since then, Palin’s supporters have argued that the investigation is politically motivated, and urged lawmakers to turn the matter over to the three-member State Personnel Board, which is appointed by the governor and charged with handling ethics complaints.

    BEFORE She was chosen.
The investigation started BEFORE she was picked by McCain.

But it’s politically motivated the GOP yelps! Hells yeah it is! She holds an office that she’s allegedly abused. That makes it political, because-and I know it’s a lame hope-even the Republicans should want that type of ethics abuse complaint investigated. Unless you have no regard for the law?

And then they want the investigation turned over to a three-member panel that is APPOINTED BY THE GOVERNOR?

Excuse me? And how would that not be biased?

Did they say that they liked cows, too, and go to high school with her?

  218. USpace says:

    Keith Says:

    USpace,
Since 65% of Americans are in favor of universal/single-payer/government-run healthcare and Obama is not—–that puts 65% of Americans to the left of a communist!!!

Single-payer is fine; in fact there are lots of single-payer Health insurance plans available. The Gov’t should pay the premiums of those that can’t afford insurance.

The problem is with ‘Single-provider’, Government run Health care, like they have in Canada, Cuba, England and elsewhere.
    That becomes a real mess.

Also, since many people are restricted from buying better plans from other states, they are stuck with plans loaded with mandates most people don’t want which drive the cost of insurance up.

    Read up on it.

USMoron you are just flat stupid. Canada doesnt HAVE a single provider health plan. The government plan is a single payer INSURANCE. The GOV through taxes provides the INSURANCE.
