Blunt repeats false claim that Alaska supplies 20 percent of U.S. oil.

Defending Gov. Sarah Palin’s experience in an interview with MSNBC today, House Minority Whip Roy Blunt (R-MO) made the false claim that Alaska supplies 20 percent of the U.S. oil:

She does understand energy, not only as governor, but as someone who was on the commission that regulated that big industry in Alaska. Twenty percent of all our oil comes from Alaska.

Watch it:

In reality, Alaska produces 14.3 percent of the nation’s oil. Furthermore, Gov. Sarah Palin recently said Alaska produces 20 percent of the U.S. “energy,” when it actually produces 3.5 percent. Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) has used the same talking point. The Washington Post FactChecker gives the claim four pinnochios.

“Blunt” is what I’d say the guy is smoking by saying that.

  2. Cal Malenky says:

Doesn’t some of the crude oil pumped out of Alaska go to Japan on tankers? It’s a world market. It goes to the highest bidder. Since shipping is a big cost and Alaska is closer than many of Japan’s other oil suppliers, it would make sense.

Truth is meaningless to the GOP.

Facts are lost on the GOP.

Math is lost on the GOP.

Truth – Facts – Math = GOP talking points

Liar, liar, Republican panties on fire!

  8. barfly says:

Does Palin’s claim include natural gas? How much natural gas does Alaska produce?

  9. Krazny says:

I would be more supportive of drilling, if the oil and natural gas we took out of the ground stayed within our own borders and was not placed on the world market.

  10. barfly says:

Just found the answer to my question, and no, Alaska doesn’t produce a lot of natural gas, compared to the other states.

Kinda sounds like Obama saying being a community organizer is training to be president of the USA.

  15. dbadass says:

Oh geez… I trust ralph can handle this!

  16. SP Biloxi says:

To be Blunt, a whip for the Minority is in order. No integrity from this moron.

  17. Zooey says:

    Jeebus TP, get better trolls!!

  18. The Republic of Stupidity says:

The RNC is so broke these days, they’ve taken to outsourcing their trolling to the lowest bidder… looks like they’re getting EXACTLY what they paid for.

  19. Mr. Evil says:

Look at what the republicans trotted out to run for POTUS and VPOTUS. And what makes anyone think they are going to have well versed, intelligent trolls. The answer is easy, they don’t exist.

  20. lurker says:

Scarah knows all she needs to know about oil. God put it
there 6000 years ago so Scarah could pump it and make
money to finance her gee haud against America. Who eles
uses oil money to fund a gee haud against America?

    Imagine this off topic subject:

Former U.S.Secretary of State Henry Kissinger today told an audience in Washington, DC that the U.S. should negotiate with Iran “without conditions” and that the next President should begin such negotiations at a high level.

  22. Shayne says:

The RNC feeds their trolls a steady diet of lead paint chips with mercury washes.

  26. Oval12345678 aka James K. Sayre says:

    Ever so slightly O/T:

Palin rapidly rose in the sky like a proverbial skyrocket. In a few days she peaked, and then she rapidly fell back to earth where, upon impact, she was transformed into a black hole that sucked in McCain… And then there was nothing left at all…

  27. the Lone Voice of Reason says:

Hopefully the press will keep calling out on these lies enough that even the sheeple will finally realize what a piece of work they are. Grasping, greedy, liars. Yeah, Dems ain’t saints but these outrageous bs lines will hopefully sink the McCan’t campaign-it’s right up there with “the fundamentals of the economy are strong” bs line. Obama needs a tv moment where they are called what they are and list every single falsehood the GOP pumps out, except I’m sure it will take more than 30 seconds allows.

  28. ljm says:

I think that a portion of the public actually enjoys being lied to. It makes them feel better and reassured. They then have social talking points to support their ignorance and prejudice. Most of the time others won’t challenge their ignorance and therefore lies soon become truths.
