Pakistan warns against another U.S. raid: We will open fire on troops.

Today, Pakistani Army Spokesman Maj. Gen. Athar Abbas said that “Pakistan’s military has ordered its forces to open fire if U.S. troops launch another air or ground raid across the Afghan border.” The order comes in response to “a highly unusual Sept. 3 ground attack by U.S. commandos.” “The orders are clear,” Abbas said. “In case it happens again in this form, that there is a very significant detection, which is very definite, no ambiguity, across the border, on ground or in the air: open fire.”

    Too late:

Pakistani border troops allegedly foiled a US raid on Pakistani territory Monday. Details of the incident remain unclear but according to an anonymous Pakistani intelligence official the troops fired warning shots at American helicopters near the border after US soldiers got out of them and tried to cross into Pakistan. The US military has denied the operation.

Earlier this month US commandos landed helicopter gunships in another Pakistani village and opened fire on a compound killing 20 people. The commando attack followed weeks of strikes by American Predator drone aircrafts and prompted an outcry inside Pakistan.

Monday’s incident comes days after revelations that President Bush had signed an order in July authorizing unilateral US strikes and ground operations inside Pakistan.

So, the Republicans condemn Obama for suggesting launching attacks into Pakistan even though he also indicated that this might be the very response if it wasn't handled properly....

And then Bush goes ahead and does it, and it wasn't handled properly, and look where we stand.....

Any guess as to who's to blame??
    Clinton, of course....

We didn't go into Cambodia. Pakistan is wrong. And we didn't go into Cambodia either.

Really, for $200 I can buy a GPS unit that will let me know where I am to within a couple of feet. While there may be room for argument of maritime borders (with fuzzy language about distance from shore vs continental shelf) and the possibility of confusion in some areas, Land-based borders are pretty well locked down.

  8. Bob Says:

You mean countries don't like our military crossing their borders for our protection? Who do they think they are? We're Americans, we can do anything.

  11. Michael Lafferty Says:

Oh, this gets complicated. It certainly cannot end well.

Pakistan asserts its sovereignty over the essentially lawless, unincorporated border area from which attacks against forces in Afghanistan are planned and launched. Seems reasonable, albeit historically without much support.

The NATO, US and Afghan forces assert the ability to engage their adversaries in hot pursuit back across the borders, and assert that these attacks allow for reasonable steps to be taken in defense of Afghan citizens and territory. So, cross border 'preventative' and proactive raids are justifiable.

Well, we cannot all have it both ways, and conflict is the inevitable result.

We don't hold the moral high ground here with our history of invading Iraq on the thinnest of pretexts, and the Pakistanis—our vaunted, 'best' friend in the battle against stateless terrorist forces—has utterly failed to address the issue to date, and—in fact—has been complicit in the creation, support, training and equipping of these same terrorists.

    Ummm, settle down, folks.

I just checked with the McCain campaign, & we only crossed into Pakistan via the Iraqi / Pakistan border.

Apparently, we were going to cross at the Czech / Pakistan border, but the Georgian troops from Bosnia are holding tight.

As it should. Pakistan is a complicated place. It gets worse when you realize that Pakistan is ruled by three different entities, with their own power structures, that don't necessarily get along with each other: rich elites, the federal bureaucracy, and the military. We might have BFF status with Zardari, but that doesn't mean we're allied with their military.

This is odd since Iraq and Pakistan do not share a border.

Is this the October surprise hinted at my McNumbnuts?

  17. Uncle Fester Lurks Says:

Didn't see this coming. Over two years ago the NY Times reported that the Bush administration was thinking about over throwing President Musharraf based on intelligence that claimed they didn't think such a move would create chaos within Pakistan. Well what did they think such a move would create?

Now we are looking at a new regime with anti-USA sentiment which I guess to the Bushites is better than a US puppet who no longer wants to be a puppet. Once again our government has armed, funded and created another enemy for the good old USA.

Of course this is all part of the plan to cause unrest in that region of the world and to keep US troops in that region until the end of time which may come sooner then we think.

In eight years under control of the neocons and christian extremists we have seen:

1-Perpetual war with the muslim world.
    2-Increased debt to communist China.
3-The rise of China and Russia.
    4-Chaos in the Middle East.
5-The restarting of the Cold war.

Something tells me the neocons and christian extremists are trying their hardest to start Armageddon so that they can cause hell on earth, only for them to be raptured up to heaven. Sorry dumbasses there will be no rapture and you will all suffer with the rest of us.

  18. dustbag44 Says:

Despite McCain's best efforts to hold on to the idea that Iraq is the central front of the war on terror, this development shows how wrong he is. This is the central front. By distracting ourselves in Iraq and jumping in bed with Musharraf we helped create this situation, which has let al-Qaeda find protection in the FATA and NWFP of Pakistan, an area that has not and, at this point, cannot be controlled by the central government in Islamabad. Furthermore, the ISI is aiding al-Qaeda and the Taliban in these areas and essentially helping them launch attacks against US forces in Afghanistan. I agree with Lafferty that unfortunately we do not have the moral high ground because of our Iraq escapades. Nevertheless, this has much higher stakes than Iraq because they have nuclear weapons and the government is hanging on by a thread. This is very serious.

I agree, just as the skirmish between Georgia and Russia which was provoked by Georgia was started to help get Johnny War hero elected here at home.

McCain boasts that he puts country first and yet thru Bush he is willing to restart the cold war and throw gasoline in the fire in the Middle East to help get himself elected.

John McCain puts John McCain first. That means creating more threats and enemies for the United States Of America.

When are we going to say ENOUGH

dareme, apparently what McCain is saying is that he believes in the American worker (and all citizens) being obedient little serfs, believing we will just continue to sit on our hands and knees and take it from behind by our facist government. Sadly I think he is right BUT if their is an uprising, have no fear the government has newer, draconian laws on the books to squash any dissent from we the people thanks to 9/11.

  28. DallasNE Says:

I think this is coming about because there were no high value targets killed by the raid. In fact, most killed were civilian women and children.

The statement looks like there is wiggle room for high value targets but the US better be damn sure of its target. Another possibility is that this was more of a PR stunt by the Bush administration to bolster John McCain's candidacy for President. With this bunch you never know.

Ding ding ding. Even though he wont be nearly as merciless in persuing prosecutions as he should be, if Obama gets elected, alot of people are going to go to jail. Right now, George Bush is political cat sh#t, no one wants to get near him, and if they can make the american people think BUsh did at least one thing right, they can lessen the damage that he does mccain by association..
