Maddow: McCain’s economic gaffe capped ‘a terrible, horrible, no good, very bad day on the campaign trail.’

Yesterday, TP’s Wonk Room reported that John McCain committed an economic gaffe when he referred to the Securities Investor Protection Corporation (SIPC) as the S-P-I-C. Moreover, McCain called the “SPIC” a regulatory agency, which the non-profit corporation’s own website explicitly says it is not. Last night, MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow reported on the gaffe, citing it as just one example of McCain’s “terrible, horrible, no good, very bad day on the campaign trail.” Watch it:

The McCain campaign has since scrubbed the transcript of McCain’s gaffe. But McCain campaign spokesman, Tucker Bounds, confirmed the typo to the New York Sun. Bounds made clear that McCain’s use of “SPIC” was not meant as a derogatory insult to Hispanics. “No one, and I mean no one, should read anymore into it,” he said. “It would be absurd to suggest otherwise.” It did, however, confirm McCain doesn’t know much about the economy.

Yes, hide the truth, yet again, and again, and again. Only problem for your attempts to decieve us is that we have this really cool thing called video that keeps us informed when we replay it.

  2. unbelievable says:

Bounds made clear that McCain’s use of “SPIC” was not meant as a derogatory insult to Hispanics.

Only a Conservative with racist tendancies would see it that way…

  3. Blade says:

Wonder why Bounds brought up the insult to Hispanics. I honestly don’t think anyone in the world thought that McCain meant anything like that. He just screwed up the letters, which in itself, shows how clueless he is. Bounds is just an absolute idiot. I suppose he is going to run around now and say that the Obama campaign has been calling McShame a racist.

Per usual, when Johnny Boy messes his Depends, his handlers are quick to wipe up the stain, unfortunately for them, the smell still lingers.

  5. Tawdry says:

And yet in spite of all the gaffes, lies, nasty remarks to reporters and others, his numbers don’t go down. John McCain is way too old and doesn’t seem to understand or remember what’s going and yet he’s still running even with Obama. What the hell?!!!

  6. Doc Rock says:

My wife, a children’s literature specialist, will love Maddow’s allusion! The whole thing would be hilarious if it weren’t so scary that McLobby might be elected!!!!

  7. misshusseinmolly says:

I agree that McCain most likely did not mean any disrespect to Hispanics by getting that acronym wrong. I doubt he has the cleverness to think of something like that.

No, this is just a case of McCain not doing his homework, and therefore being rather clueless about what he says — sort of like a foreign-born actor trying to learn an English language part phonetically. I doubt McCain really knows an SIPC from an SPIC from an SPCA. It’s all just letters to him. I suspect that SIPC was something one of his handlers coached him on to make him appear knowledgeable about the economy, but acronyms tend to make learning one’s lines difficult.

Excellent point. I know a couple of TPers made snide comments to that effect, but no one seriously suggested any such intent. Still, Bounds felt compelled to deny it.

Nope, it was simply a doddering old man getting confused, that’s all…

  10. The Dogfather says:

I said it two days ago here, and I’ll say it again — McDumbA$$ has absolutely no idea what he’s talking about. Apart from getting the acronym for the SIPC wrong, to lump the SIPC and FDIC in with the other entities in his “alphabet soup”, and then claim that these are all examples of “government regulatory agencies”, shows that McIdiot is even more clueless on the workings of our economic system than even he previously admitted.

In that whole rant, he mentioned only one entity that’s an actual government agency responsible for regulating the securities industry — the SEC. The SIPC and FDIC are private corporations that insure investments in the securities industry and deposits in commercial banks, respectively. They do not regulate the banks or securities industry whatsoever. Even the NASD and NYSE (which have joined their regulatory arms into a single entity, FINRA) are member organizations and not governmental agencies.

So not only does McNumnuts get the acronyms wrong, he lumps all of these organizations together in his “alphabet soup of agencies” without understanding — AGAIN — that he has absolutely no idea what in the world he’s talking about. And this is the moron that 45% of the sheeple currently want running our economy? Sheesh…

  11. MrSquirrel says:

Cut him some slack. He was just having a long horrible terrible no good very bad day.

    ———————————————————

I also suspect, Miss Molly, that he had “SPIC” roll off his tongue because it sounded phonetically like “FDIC” which he lumped together with all the other acronyms in that rant that he didn’t understand (and judging from the reaction of his handlers on the stage with him and the sheeple in the audience, they didn’t understand either…). It’s also rather telling that he made the same mistake four times during speeches yesterday — meaning that his programmers didn’t catch it in time to correct the bug in his microchip in real time yesterday.

See, that’s the problem with repuglicans — they don’t know enough to keep their damn pieholes shut when they don’t know what in the fu(k they’r talking about…

  15. stateofthedivision says:

The McCain camp committed much greater gaffes than this in the last 48 hours.

Carly’s assessment that neither member of the McCon-Pullin’ ticket could run a major company was double shoe in mouth.

McCon’s attempt to shift a fundamentally sound economy to the American worker was pathetic to watch on tape.

Pullin’s noncooperation in an ethics investigation took several inches off her reformer bun.

There’s a net full of fish to fry. The SPIC faux pas should be thrown back.

However, it is time to press the McCon camp on their economic solutions for country in crisis. His dance on the edge of the regulatory razor has only bloodied his feet.

Using the wrong acronym can happen to anyone.
Anyone who really doesn’t know what they are talking about or isn’t sure about what they are talking about.

But not knowing what the SIPC does, is the real problem and shouldn’t be ignored.

McCain, the deregulation guru, wants to clean up Wall Street now? How exactly? More Deregulation? Yeah, that’s gonna work. Lack of regulation is what got these banks into the trouble they are in now. AND Phil Gramm is still advising McCain.
You think things are gonna change much if McCain appoints Gramm as Sec. of the Treasury? If you do, then, I’ve got an invisible horse with a single horn on it’s head that I’d like to sell you.

It is also forgivable to use racial slurs accidentally when refering to committies, commissions ect….you know if the racism accidentally slips out…that is forgivable.

  29. onamonapeia says:

In this world of alphabet soup acronyms, who among us has not occasionally said letters in the wrong order. It is ridiculous to suggest that mixing up the I and P proves racism. Moreover, it suggests that if this is the level to which people must sink to argue against John McCain, they don’t have very strong ground arguing against his policies or, on the flip side, defending Obama’s views and policies.

If you disagree with his policies and views, don’t vote for him. State why you disagree with his policies and views and why you believe they are bad for the country, but this game of ‘gotcha’ demeans the liberal position.

Moreover, is it really reasonable to assume that anyone who disagrees with you is stupid? Is that tolerant and open-minded? As you go through life, you will find many people who disagree with you on many subjects. Are you going to dismiss them all as ’stupid?’ That is sad.

You seem to have been asleep. It’s become a pattern. They have relaxed and now thier inherent racism is eeking out.

As far as the rest of your post…..I totally disagree with you. You are talking to the wrong people. The republicans are totally responible for the civil discourse that is what politics has become.

Oh, it’s not an assumption. It’s pretty solid fact based on evidence gleaned from the dozens of trolls who’ve come through this forum.

  34. the Lone Voice of Reason says:

    onamonapeia?
I don’t think that it was a racist comment. I do think that is a sign of age and that disturbs me a great deal more because, HONESTLY, do you think that Palin could lead the country in the very near future? Ask her to describe the Securities Investor Protection Corporation.
And speaking of honest, what about the broken teleprompter comment? Why did they lie about something that could be so easily proven to be a lie? Because they boldly lie to America about little things you can reason they will lie about bigger issues. Wars start over things like that.
They have a lot of reality problems within the GOP campaign.
