Matthews Pushes Cantor On Bush’s Handling Of The Economy: ‘He’s Pulling One Of These Katrinas Again’

In a contentious segment on “Hardball” tonight, host Chris Matthews accused Rep. Eric Cantor (R-VA) and his conservative allies of “taking off your uniforms,” pretending they’re not Republicans, and running against President Bush. “I’m not going to let anyone get away with that kind of foolery,” Matthews said. He asked Cantor at least five times whether he supported the job Bush is doing — and all five times Cantor refused to answer.

Noting that a “normal president” would be more visible during such a crisis, Matthews compared Bush’s response to the current financial turmoil to his handling of Hurricane Katrina:

MATTHEWS: I’m just asking you where’s the President of the United States tonight? You got Paulson out there. Where’s the President? He’s pulling one of these Katrinas again. Where is he? The country’s worried like hell when you lose this amount of value in the wealth of this country in a matter of days. You’d think the President would come on television and explain the situation to the American people. I’m just asking where he is. That’s all I’m asking.

CANTOR: Chris, you’ll have to ask — I don’t know where he is. I assume he’s in the White House.

Watch it:

Matthews was visibly frustrated, telling Cantor, “You have to take responsibility, sir, for the policies of this Administration that have gotten us into this mess. You can’t walk away and say, Oh we had nothing to do with this, can you? Say it if you want to. It’s your right.”

Matthews noted Cantor’s refusal to even mention the President: “You haven’t used the word Republican tonight, your party didn’t use it in the acceptance speech,” he said. “John McCain never said the word Republican, he never said the word Bush. You’re trying to take off your uniforms and run from the field of political battle and claim you’re not Republicans.” The GOP steered clear from both Bush and Cheney at their convention last month, mentioning Bush only once and never mentioning Cheney.

Matthews has definitely turned. He also has recently expressed regret for hammering Gore so mercilessly in 2000. I'm sure it will come as a great relief to the 20,000 Americans who are now without limbs as a result of the Bush administration.

Thanks, Matthews, we reeeaaaaalllly appreciate it.

  26. stateofthedivision Says:

Rapture Ready did a double blow with his Judas sell out comment. Rep. Eric Cantor is Jewish. Daryll would know as they both live in Virginia.

I'm not sure if Eric joined the list of Repugnicants avoiding the RNC like the plague, but Daryll attended the thugfest. As Chief Deputy Whip, Cantor likely heard McCon-Pullin' acceptance speeches.

Cantor is a ginormous gaping dou(hbag. Remember his defending Rush after one of the many foot-in-mouth moments? Regardé via Americablog:

So much for all the claims that Limbaugh is just a lone loony who doesn't represent Republicans or their party. The congressional Republican group in charge of electing Repubs to Congress has embraced Limbaugh's latest attack on the troops, big time. Here is their email they just sent out.

From: Rep. Eric Cantor, Chief Deputy Republican Whip website@nrcc.org
    Date: Oct 4, 2007 2:19 PM
    Subject: Rush Needs Your Support

    Friends,

One failure after another, Washington Democrats have built a record of legislative failure; one disappointment after another, Washington Democrats have failed to deliver results to the people who got them there.
This must be why, just nine months into their tenure, the Democrat-led Congress hit an 11% approval rating – that is the lowest in recorded history. Facing their record of failure, Washington Democrats decided to try and distract – and so they took a man's words out of context, then they went on the attack.
That's why I'm encouraging you to click here to "Stand With Rush" and sign this petition.

It is at moments like these when we need to band together as conservatives and fight back.

This issue is bigger than you or me, it is bigger than Rush Limbaugh. With the recent liberal effort to resurrect the "fairness doctrine," we have to recognize that free speech -- conservative free speech is under direct attack. These are issues that speak directly to the core of the modern conservative movement – are we going to allow ourselves to be pushed around by liberal extremists, or are we going to fight back?

I want to send Washington Democrats a message that their attempts to distract aren't working – I stand with Rush Limbaugh against liberal attacks.

Rep. Eric Cantor (R - VA)
    Chief Deputy Republican Whip
    EricCantor.com

P.S. Please remember to Stand With Rush and sign the petition.

Or this twaddle 'ol Eric started (via ThinkProgress) after Pelosi went to Syria:

Rep. Eric Cantor (R-VA), the chief deputy minority whip in the House, has launched a partisan smear campaign against Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) for visiting Syria. He writes in the National Review:

The Speaker and many of her Democratic allies have become so drunk with grandiose visions of deposing Bush that they break bread with terrorists and enemies of the United States. The Speaker’s words and actions carry consequences for U.S. policy, and they certainly did our allies no favors last week. Instead of standing united with the president and Congress against the Syrian menace, Mrs. Pelosi chose to needlessly divide us.

Nowhere in his 700-word diatribe does Cantor mention the fact that five Republicans “broke bread” with Assad last week: Reps. Frank Wolf, Joseph Pitts, Robert Aderholt, David Hobson, and Darrell Issa.

Cantor is a typical republican pussy-coward; but that's being redundant...

She's Bush without Cheney's smarts to back her up. She admitted she doesn't even know what the VP does! Good Lord, people-- imagine going to a doctor who doesn't know what doctors do!! Women who adore Palin are setting women's rights back 50 years. They should be ashamed to support Palin who is totally against women's rights- she even forced rape victims to pay for their own help!

Personally, I think Mathews is one of the better commentators on TV. Of course, I like Maddow and Olberman better, but I think Mathews is pretty impartial and they are obvious lefties. He's been ripping these jerkoffs for a long time now. A few days ago he tore apart some GOP dimwit for the idiotic commercial McCain ran accusing Obama of calling Palin a pig. He was pretty critical in his comments about Fiorino the other day too. And also a few months ago he had one of his best moments when he ripped apart another right wing radio nut (Kevin James) who was trying to defend Bush after he implied that Obama was an appeaser like Chamberlain.

I think his biggest failing is he loves politics a little too much. It's just my opinion, but I think he does a pretty fair job on his show.

  64. twinkle Says:

This country is in trouble all around. The fact that a R-presidential candidate thinks that everything is ok in his world, is not ok for the American people. It's not ok to be forced to buy this high priced gas. It's not ok to be sitting in a government position and not know what the world is going on. It's not ok for people be forced into foreclosure. It's not ok to have a weak economy. It's not ok for people to be without Free Public Health care funded by the government. It's not ok to manipulate the voters by a quick gimmick to choose a woman as his running VP. What this decision has proved to me is that he should be manager of a discount store. The executive office, president needs to be run by someone who can manage a country. Hire their VP with the skills to manage our country, someone who is familiar with foreign affairs and their leaders. Hire the best individual who has previous abilities to run this country all around. To feed the country with manipulation to this degree will only result in something worse than what we are going through now... You build a country with prosperity, strength, leadership, knowledge and determination. Why fool the people with a clever gimmick...will that help us????
