Palin Counters Fiorina: I View Myself As Alaska’s CEO

palingtew.jpg Yesterday, McCain adviser Carly Fiorina appeared on a St. Louis radio show and said that Gov. Sarah Palin (R-AK) was not qualified to run a major business:

QUESTION: Do you think [Sarah Palin] has the experience to run a major company, like Hewlett Packard?

FIORINA: No, I don’t. But you know what? That’s not what she’s running for. Running a corporation is a different set of things.

However, in the past, Palin has said that she considers herself to be “the state C.E.O.” for Alaska. Philip Gourevitch reports in the latest New Yorker:

In the past, she said, “Alaska was conceding too much, and chipping away at our sovereignty. And Alaska—we’re set up, unlike other states in the union, where it’s collectively Alaskans own the resources. So we share in the wealth when the development of these resources occurs.” And she said, “Our state constitution—it lays it out for me, how I’m to conduct business with resource development here as the state C.E.O. It’s to maximize benefits for Alaskans, not an individual company, not some multinational somewhere, but for Alaskans.”

Later yesterday, Fiorina appeared on MSNBC and attempted to clarify her remarks, saying that it’s “a fallacy to suggest that the country is like a company.”

The McCain campaign was so “furious” about Fiorina’s comments that staffers are making her “disappear” for a while by pulling her from all media interviews.

So is Fiorina conceding that running the state of Alaska isn’t as hard as running a business, such as Hewlett-Packard? Or does she think that Palin’s job has left her unqualified?

Digg It!

I see the Pallid nomination set up by a committee to get the Christian Right Voting Block.

    Pallid is one scary broad.

Cat Fight (sorry was that sexist?)

Seriously, Fiorina was a disgrace as CEO at HP, the more that comes out about Palin we see how bad a CEO/governor she has been in Alaska. Neither could or should run a 7-11

  3. The Republic of Stupidity says:

    Wonderful… now she’s tying herself to Botch…

    You go, girl… you go!

  4. Chuck Feney says:

Running a company isn’t the same as governance. Besides, what does does Carly know about running a biz, unless it is running HP into the ground?

  5. Blade says:

Don’t you just love the sound of a campaign swirling around the toilet bowl as it is being flushed by the American people.

  6. Zooey says:

So Fiorina and Palin have something in common — neither of them can run a major company.

  7. DallasNE says:

Considering how Gov. Palin is handling the Troopergate scandal I would concur that she is acting like a CEO, including her apparent ordering of the Attorney General to order State employees to ignore supoenas in the investigation.

By the way, the Attorney General in Alaska was appointed by Sarah Palin. Under those circumstances one would assume that he would recuse himself. But no. What gives? Also, what is the legal basis for his decision? There doesn’t appear to be one.

Lastly, why is the AG even making executive decisions. And doesn’t this really belong in the courts?

It looks to me like Alaska remains an extremely corrupt place. Their last election did little to clean up the mess and instead has created a new, worse mess.

  8. spencers mom says:

Don’t we have an MBA president? Who was CEO of a few failed business ventures? And was, by Palin’s logic, CEO of Texas, a far larger “business”?

And how did that go for America? BushCo has managed to do to America exactly what bin Laden was sought to do.

Yup, Sarah, keep tying yourself to Bush! We couldn’t have said it any better!

    PEACE

  9. hussein toasterhead says:

It’s interesting that you don’t see this kind of infighting coming from the Obama campaign. I wonder if that says something about his abilities as an executive leader.

  10. JMOHR says:

This tends to be a general trait for conservative business people. They believe that government service is for lesser beings who really do not have the intellect to be in business and make money. Public service and the public good are really just foreign concepts to them. This is why Fiorina made her statement. She believes that McCain and Palin really just do not measure up to her and other business persons. McCain and Palin would simply serve as useful tools of business interests because they understand their relative position in the scope of things.

  11. Zimzone says:

Sarahcudda’s ‘opinion’ that the subpoenas in Troopergate aren’t legitimate are a sure sign of who she really is.

    Sarah isn’t McCain, Jr…she’s SarahCheney!

    Think about it.
    -She loves to shoot guns

-She shoots endangered species from airplanes

    -She intimidates people as policy

-She ducks for cover from the media

-She’s never served, but calls herself a Commander in Chief

-She repeats tired old lies ad nauseum

-She believes abstinence is birth control (Ha!)

-She’s against freedom of the press, especially libraries

    -She’s anti-union

-She takes government money while saying she’s against it

    Yup. SarahCheney…

You can lead a Moose to water, but you can’t make her think.

Murkins do NOT ‘remember’ things like political lies, scandals (unless sexual in nature), or failures in governance.

Probably, it would be impossible to maintain the Nation otherwise.

Wasn’t W supposed to be the “CEO President”…. USA going the way of Enron, Lehman, etc. etc. How about a Presidential President? Vote Obama.

  14. And the beat goes on says:

    From the HP corporate site:

HP has approximately 320,000 employees worldwide

HP’s revenue for the four fiscal quarters ended July 31, 2008: $113.1 billion

HP serves more than one billion customers in more than 170 countries on six continents

How big is the Alaska budget?
    $2.9 billion (http://www.adn.com/legislature/story/378507.html

How many people live in the state?
The population of Alaska was 626,932 as of the 2000 census. By 2006, the Census Bureau’s estimate is 670,053 (from WikiAnswers)

**Note: Population numbers reflect how many people live within state borders. Internationally, they can see Russia! Yeah, Caribou Barbie, you can run a large corporation with your extensive business and executive experience. ROTFLMAO!!! Oh, and HP gets ALL of its revenues from commerce. Where does Alaska revenue come from? (From WikiAnswers): ALASKA is like NO OTHER STATE, COUNTRY OR CITY – It has NO state Income Tax and NO state sales tax and it sends cash money to its citizens each year. The state is primarily funded by Oil and Gas related revenues and money from the Federal Government

  15. upside99 says:

One would think a “CEO” would not want to look like a male comedian (Carly) or a 1970′2 truck stop waitress (Sarahcuda). Don’t successful executives have ‘people’ to take care of those things?

  16. tom says:

It seems as though the ranks are closing around The Iron Maiden of Alaska. All the cronies she has placed in her administration are going to stone-wall the TrooperGate investigation.

I guess that leaves it to those of us in the lower 48 to reject her politics of deception, secrecy, incompetence and evangelical ideology.

After her defeat on November 4, she can return to Alaska. It appears that the majority of them deserve her. Now, if there were only a way for us in the lower 48 to outlaw Alaska’s royalties on oil taken from Federal land that just happens to be in their state. I wonder how popular the Pentacostal Pork-barrel Princess of Wasilla would be if her minions were taken off the dole.

  17. hussein toasterhead says:

“Our state constitution—it lays it out for me, how I’m to conduct business with resource development here as the state C.E.O. ”
    _______

And when she left Wasilla $20 million in debt, it was kinda like a “town C.E.O.” taking a huge severance package with her.

She and Fiorina are birds of a feather – why can’t they just get along??

  18. techsong says:

Right, Whatever you say Palin. Yesterday she was unknown, now she’s the expert on everything.

  19. upside99 says:

I wonder if Carly will draw a 23 million dollar severance package from the McDepends Corporation now? After all, she has managed to run that company into the ground just as well as she did H-P?

Equal pay for equal work, right?

Two days is like a month to electronic media, and six weeks a decade.

Yeah, the GOOPers all got a big buzz out of nominating Palin, but that buzz has already started wearing off, and now? They’re stuck w/ her. Perhaps they should have thought this thru better, or simply not gone for the novelty pick.

They did get quite a bang for their buck, for a week or two, but that Christmas toy is now out of the box, and they’re not going to be able to regenerate that novelty buzz again. Not so much fun now, huh, GOOPers?

    ___________________________________________________________

I think the lack of infighting from the Obama campaign comes from the fact that Obama selected a running mate qualified for the job, he has surrounded himself with competent people, and he has (for the most part) been running a clean campaign, so there aren’t too many spills that have to be mopped up. Plus, they have a quality product, which means that their Marketing Department doesn’t have to lie to sell it.

Oh wait — I guess that DOES say something about his abilities as an executive leader.

Oh, look! More findings of corruption during Palin’s “leadership” of Alaska, Inc.:

Sarah Palin and Global Warming: Alaska Prof. Says Palin Misrepresented State Findings on Endangered Polar Bears…and Tried to Cover It Up

Scientists from the World Wildlife Fund have warned that Polar bears and other rare species could become extinct because of the rapid melting of the Artic sea ice. They say that less ice is predicted in the Arctic this year than in any other.

Now the Republican Vice Presidential Candidate–Alaskan Governor Sarah Palin–has tried to sue the US government over the listing of polar bears as a threatened species.

She’s also denied that global warming is caused by human activity. But in an interview last week with ABC’s Charlie Gibson, the governor seemed to display a change of heart.

Rick Steiner is a marine conservation specialist and professor at the University of Alaska who has tried to uncover the scientific basis for Palin’s opposition to any new federal protections for polar bears under the Endangered Species Act. When he requested the assessment of state scientists who had examined the impact of global warming on polar bears, he was told he might have to pay close to half a million dollars for the request to be processed.

Steiner finally obtained the documents through a federal records request and found that the state’s marine mammal scientists were actually at odds with Palin’s position. They had agreed with federal researchers conclusions that polar bears are threatened with extinction because of a shrinking ice cap.

But they sure do have a purdy ice rink with mirrors in the bathroom for applying lipstick!

    WTF? Pigs can’t ice-skate!!!

    upside99 Says:

Is that tanning bed Sarahcuda uses paid for by the good people of Alaska or did she get that as a gift from Big Oil or maybe from Teddy Boy Stevens?

Upside, it appears that Princess TansAlot did pay for the bed herself, but my questions are 1) did she pay fair market value, and 2) how much did the electrical upgrade of the governor’s mansion cost Alaska, and 3) how much are the increased energy bills for the power to that tanning bed?

If she didn’t pay “fair market value” and the price she paid exceeded $150 less than fair market value, she needed to report that as a “gift”. Commercial tanning beds require a dedicated 220 volt power supply, and I’m guessing the 100-year-old mansion wasn’t wired for it!

    Just saying…

    PEACE

  31. tom says:

    WTF? Pigs can’t ice-skate!!!

I don’t know about that. I have been following the republican presidential candidates and it sure looks like pigs can fly so I suspect that they can ice-skate, too.

  32. ralph the wonder llama says:

spencers mom, I’m of the opinion that the tanning bed thing is not a good way to go. So what if she installed a tanning bed, even if she got a discount on it? Let’s let it go, and concentrate on the real problems with Sarah Palin’s candidacy and performance as governor; Troopergate. Lying about earmark “reform”. Lying about how much of the nation’s energy her state supplies. Her record as a”borrow and spend” conservative.

These things we can really nail to the wall.

Tanning beds make us look as petty as she is.

  33. upside99 says:

Aww, Ralph, can’t we have ANY fun? You are such a party pooper!

    Heh Heh

  34. superid says:

Gee, and I always thought you were a stooge for big oil.

  35. Idyll says:

The more I hear coming out of Palin’s mouth, the more convinced I am that she’ll find a way to weasel out of the debate with Biden.

  36. spencers mom says:

Ralph, I’m in total agreement with you, was just responding to the question about who paid for the bed.

I was “just saying” and, no, we don’t even need to go down that road, any more than we need to go down the pregnant teen road.

Palin’s record and her current conduct in the troopergate investigation speak volumes. But I would like to see her tax returns to see if she claimed that per diem money she charged for staying in her house as “income”.

    PEACE

  37. RUCerious says:

Umm, Alaska’s a state, not a corporation. Just in case you didn’t know the difference, Ms Palienation.

  38. ralph the wonder llama says:

THank you, spencers mom. I’ve said my piece. I will party-poop no more.

    Party on!

    Blue State Bob

Hmmm, if getting Alaskan citizens a $1200.00 energy rebate this year, if suspending the state’s gas tax for the remainder of the year, and if negotiating a transcontinental pipeline is being a bad governor, I would hate to see what makes one a good governor in your view.

By the way, what exactly has your governor done for you and this country this year???
