White House won’t side with McCain on ‘fundamentals’ of economy being ’strong.’

This year, both President Bush and Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) have claimed that the “fundamentals” of the economy “are strong,” McCain doing so as late as yesterday. But in today’s White House briefing, spokeswoman Dana Perino — in a tense exchange — refused to side with McCain’s latest assessment:

Q You didn’t directly answer the question about whether the fundamentals of the economy are sound –

PERINO: I answered it the way I was going to answer it, and I’ll answer it the same way again. So — and if you –

Q Why are you — why won’t you direct –

PERINO: Because, Keith –

Q I’ve never heard someone not answer that question directly, from the podium here, that the fundamentals of the economy are sound. Are they, or not?

PERINO: What I said is that we have the strength to be able to deal with this crisis in our economy. And I know that you’re not asking the question in the forum of a 2008 campaign, but I know as soon as I say something you’re going to turn it around and it will be a part of the 2008 campaign, and I’m not going to play the game.

Watch it:

“We have a mixed picture,” Perino concluded.

Who really cares if Dana Bimborino thinks the fundamentals of the economy are sound?

That airhead can’t even balance her checkbook. She probably thinks that she’s got money in her account as long as there’s a blank check in the checkbook. You know — the GDumbya School of Economics Theorem 101.

  2. Bozo The Neoclown says:

Dana Perino’s a whore for the republican party. c’mon TP, where’s the story here?

  3. stateofthedivision says:

Bush called the events over the weekend “an adjustment” and has been silent on the A.I.G. takeover/bailout.

As Chief Executive some characterization would be helpful. Silence is never a good damage control strategy. Ask J & J.

  4. Leftside Annie says:

Aww, now, come on, Press Secretary Barbie! You know that Bush and McBush have exactly the same views on the economy and how to fix it!

    Say it with me now:

    PRIVATIZE the profits.
    SOCIALIZE the losses.

    – - I guess that drops it to 89%, eh Mr. Mavericky?

  6. Bozo The Neoclown says:

considering grampy mclame just made it officialy that graham is his economic advisor a vote for him is a vote for more of the same economic crap going on. graham created this mess for chimpy. corporate welfare…it’s a neoclown wet dream it is.

  7. Cats r Flyfishn says:

When Perino says that she will not play the game, that means, she really is playing the game. Besides, what can quaking duck do anyway. He already wrecked everything that he’s touched. We are in a crises and the best thing Bush can do right now is go back to Crawford and clear some brush.

  8. NOLIESPLEASE says:

What you don’t have the balls to admit you work for an ignorant party!!! Common tell us….you know as I know who can solve our problems…Obama!!! How much are you losses have you had lately Perino???? How often are you checking the stock market????? lol.

  9. ticoslandcostarica says:

It just goes to show that McCain and Bush are out of touch with what is going on in the rest of the world. They will repeat their mantra until they are blue in the face. As we mentioned in the ticosland blog today, McCain now wants to be the champion for government oversight, something he vehemently opposed for years. It’s another contradiction in a long list of contradictions.

  10. Buckie Boy says:

Yeah, well Bush and Cheney have already moved all the billions they have stolen to Euros and Gold for their retirement in Paraguay.

Ah, Dana isn’t as dumb as she looks (and usually acts). She has discovered the value of going on the attack to avoid answering questions and addressing challenges. She has learned from her masters well.

“I know as soon as I say something you’re going to turn it around and it will be a part of the 2008 campaign, and I’m not going to play the game.”

That is fantastic. Everything they say is complete shit and they know it. So they aren’t going to say anything anymore because every time they open their mouths Obama gets 2pts further ahead.

  14. Tired of being lied to says:

I’ll bet about now Perino is wishing someone would ask a question about the lipstick hoo-haa that went on just a two short weeks ago.

Those were the good ol’ days, eh, Dana?

  15. Count Istvan says:

If she isn’t going to answer questions why send her out there?

  16. stateofthedivision says:

Apparently the White House isn’t accountable for answering questions about the economy.

This comes atop Bush’s closed door meeting with his top financial advisers. Uh, we know you met. What’s going on?

How about a little openness and transparency?

  17. 666lattes says:

“I know as soon as I say something you’re going to turn it around and it will be a part of the 2008 campaign, and I’m not going to play the game.”

OK, I’ll give her that, but is that any excuse to not get a direct answer from our sitting President about the current state of the economy?

    Politics to the bitter end…

  21. mk3872 says:

Pls, everybody, this is NOT an idictment on Perino … she is just the mouthpiece.

She sticks to marching orders at PCs probably better than anyone other spokesperson in this administration.

The story here is that she was not given permission to utter: “The fundamentals of our economy are strong” while McPOW keeps shouting that out.

Once again, everyone else gets is, but Gramps is behind the curve.

  22. The Dogfather says:

Does this mean the White House doesn’t think the fundamentals of the economy are strong?

If so, then Grampy McMoron should be asking why the White House hates American workers…

  23. MapleStreet says:

WOW! McSame is making claims that are so absurd that even the WH won’t back him up. This on the heels of Rove saying that McCain stretched the truth too far.

  24. IgnoranceIsNotBliss says:

Sorry to be OT here guys, but I need some help. Over at TMP Josh Marshall says this: “Meanwhile, the claim that the Obama camp has ‘tainted’ the trooper-gate investigation is truly risible.”

I haven’t heard any claim that team Obama was messing with the investigation. What did I miss?

  25. backup says:

know as soon as I say something you’re going to turn it around and it will be a part of the 2008 campaign, and I’m not going to play the game.

Okay, Perino won’t bite. That’s apparently a story. The story is, she’s bright enough not to say ‘yes, the fundamentals are strong’. Because, instead of this post, you’d have a picture of McCain hugging W, and another McSame story.

    Nice try.

TP and all: Watch out, because McCain & Palin are trying switch & bait on this by back-peddling and rewriting their words. The claim is now that by “fundamentals” he meant “workers”!!

Can you believe that?? LOL! Who EVER referes to economic fundamentals as workers???

Watch out for this, tho …

  29. lurker says:

Sarah Palin took her first impromptu question from a reporter traveling with her campaign Wednesday…

“Certainly AIG, though, with the construction bonds that they’re holding, and with the insurance that they are holding, very, very impactful to Americans,” she said. “So you know, the shot that has been called by the feds, its understandable but very, very disappointing that taxpayers are called upon for another one.”

  30. IgnoranceIsNotBliss says:

“I know as soon as I say something you’re going to turn it around and it will be a part of the 2008 campaign, and I’m not going to play the game.”

She was later heard to mutter, “I can’t answer the question because I don’t know what they (the fundamentals) are.”

  31. muzz says:

I am freaking out over what is happening, but (and this is probably kind of perverse – but I don’t care) I think it will provide the impetus to put Obama over the top. There is no way mcdildo and his sidekick can manipulate the talking points with this going on. Besides, gramps has been on so many sides of the issues that he/she/it will have a hard time taking the offensive on this.

  35. paleolib says:

I understand that even PressBot Barbie knows the Bush administration is toxic so she refuses to say anything that can slime McCain. My question is how does it look when the press secretary of the POTUS refuses to answer a queston about the strength of the economy and the prez is nowhere to be seen. Think about it people, four major U.S. financial services companies have needed government bailouts this year, one simply evaporated and another sold itself to avoid the same fate. Far from being reassured by the intervention the markets are waiting for more failures. The president as far as I can tell hasn’t said a thing this week. I hope the clowns who justify not voting by claiming no major difference between the parties are paying attention.

  38. leftcoast says:

McCain: …” going to put an end to the reckless conduct, corruption, and unbridled greed that have caused a crisis on Wall Street.”
There should be one of those scrolls down below giving the proviso that McCain has 83 former financial industry lobbyists working for him.

So what exactly is YOUR point backup? The story is more her EVASIVENESS when posed with a DIRECT question.

Do you believe the fundamentals of the economy are strong?

    Does the Bush Administration?

If they do not, why not come out and answer the question directly and provide the ways they plan to help alleviate the situation.

If they DO believe the fundamentals of the economy are strong, then they should explain why that is so.

How come you are so partisan that you can’t even flinch in your support for people that are evasive and dishonest about the the very same things they should be forthright about?

TP and all: Watch out, because McCain & Palin are trying switch & bait on this by back-peddling and rewriting their words. The claim is now that by “fundamentals” he meant “workers”!!

Even so, the immediate counterpoint to this is, if the fundamentals (workers) of our economy are so strong then why has unemployment continued to rise? Why have wages been stagnant? Etc. etc. etc.

They can’t spin this one without sounding even dumber than before.

Forgive my cynicism, dbadass. I guess the trolls have been so scarce lately, and so lame when they have shown up, that when “Sick of Lies” posts inane stuff that sounds identical in style and content to other fake-progressive sock-puppets we’ve busted, my eyes got big and wanted to play a few rounds of Whack-A-Troll™.

You’re probably right. “Sick of Lies” surely is very, very sincere. Let’s sit back and let him prove it, shall we?

Sick of Lies? Your ball. Take it out at the foul line.
