Palin misrepresents her record on the Bridge to Nowhere for 11th time.

Tonight during his interview with Gov. Sarah Palin (R-AK), Sean Hannity asked her, “Did you originally support [the Bridge to Nowhere] and did you change your view on it?” Failing to note that she originally supported the bridge, Palin claimed simply, “I killed the Bridge to Nowhere.” Watch it:

Palin, as ThinkProgress and others have repeatedly documented, was a strong advocate for the Bridge to Nowhere and repeatedly expressed her desire to renew federal funding for the project. The McCain-Palin campaign has now misrepresented Palin’s record with regard to the Bridge to Nowhere at least 36 times:

What does it tell you about a candidate who hangs her whole campaign on a lie?

  2. Krazny Says:

Looking at the latest poles and the campaign news, I don't think Obama and Biden need to say or do much. Looks like the Palin-McCain ticket is shooting itself in the foot.

  8. IBTunion4obama Says:

Someone needs to point out to her that she's lying. I think she has convinced herself that she hasn't lied.

  9. spencers mom Says:

Drago, I'm far more interested in seeing McStain's medical records, and his medical/mental evaluation and his debriefing after returning from Vietnam.

I also have a great deal of interest in Cindy's tax returns, and understanding the details of her ongoing business relationship with Charles Keating.

Don't you worry about a thing folks, because the Republicans are coming to save us all from the Republicans.

  11. scootmandubious Says:

I have my own, fully-sourced piece, debunking the Palin lies about the Bridge to Nowhere.

At the very least, it might give you an extra hyperlink or 3 to use when responding to the ongoing repetition of that lie.

    It is at:

  12. Mr. Evil Says:

Maybe we should all start lying. Just lie all the time about anything and everything. Lie, lie, lie all day and night. Then and only then would a republican be slightly inclined to tell the truth about anything. Maybe he/she would consider themselves a "maverick."

  13. Bullsmith Says:

That clip was pure fog. Certainly the boldness of the lie has diminished. Now it's more lie-and-cover.

  14. jb Says:

Killing a bridge before it was born...I thought life began at the moment of conception.

  15. RUCerious Says:

Mr Evil. I'm showing up for work at 9:45 tomorrow and telling the boss that I got in at 7 AM. When he asks me for my project status I'll tell him I'm finished a month ahead of schedule.
When we go to install the software I haven't written, I'll say the server ate it...

  16. Mr. Evil Says:

OT; The NY Times is reporting that republicans are push polling in Florida to try to convince Jews there that Barack Obama is actually affiliated with Hamas. These people are complete whack-o-loons! They just can't stop! They are addicted to lying and just making shit up. This is a comical farce of lies, deception and outright bullshit of monumental proportions. Maybe republican pundits have an inside monthly contest about who can come up with the most outrageous lie that will be used in the McCain campaign trail. I'm waiting for Sarah to levitate at any moment.

  17. spencers mom Says:

RUC, I'm trying to figure out how to roll the government bailouts and GOP lying into never paying my taxes again and spend the rest of my long, comfortable life on white collar welfare.

Wonder what the IRS would say if file my returns whenever I want, lie about my income (I guess I'd have to inflate my "worth" to play correctly), never actually make any payments, spend as much as I possibly can on things that make no sense, engage in lots of risky and even illegal activities, and borrow, borrow, borrow so I can buy, buy, buy.

Then, after ignoring their repeated "sternly worded letters" and "invitations" to appear, when they come to get me (I'm assuming the IRS has more spine than our congress) I'll lie some more, hire a team of lawyers (at taxpayer expense, so I guess that would be a team of public defenders) and lie my ass off some more.

In the end, I will then expect the government to not only overlook my criminal activities, including the money I've hidden off-shore, and forgive my tax debts. My final expectation would be that the government not only pay off all my remaining debts, but give me a huge golden parachute to sufficiently stuff my pockets so I don't get hurt when I land.

Does that sound like a plan? After all, what's good for the GOP is good for the... well, you get the point.

    PEACE

    It's downright pathological.

I know we've covered this before, but seriously... what the hell were McCain's people thinking when they okayed this woman?

  19. had enough Says:

How dare this woman continually LIE to the public... what an insult. I no longer hold any hope for any of her weird stories holding any water.

That baby is not her's... I now have to believe this as common sense out weighs anything that liar has to say.
A 44 year old woman after having 4 kids could not have given birth 4 months ago and have the physical and mental energy this woman has. No way.

And what is with a woman of this age wearing a skirt on TV half up her thigh? Imagine if Michelle did this.

With all the crap we have been through with the lying Bush administration, watching our economy go to hell, watching our pensions, home equity go down, watching this unbearable stupid lying idiot bimbo with her skirt up her butt is sheer torture.

  22. rlplant Says:

People, and the news media, have apparently forgotten was that the earmark issue was over the bridges to nowhere, note the plural for bridge. Palin originally supported earmarks for both the Gravina Island bridge and the bridge from Anchorage across the Knik Arm. Both were about a quarter billion dollars. She continues to support construction of the Knik Arm bridge, and I'm sure if she weren't running for VP she would be working hard to get earmarks for it as well.

  23. Robt Says:

A friend I know is a Trekee. Yes, Star Trek.

He tells me that Palin is a scout of the BORG from a couple of episodes.

Apparently, Palin being a BORG is here to assimilate you. I am beginning to think he may be right. She keeps saying this hypnotizing phrase over and over. Until you are fully assimilated and resistance is futile I understand.

** I tried to tell him its half truth and half lie. She was for it and only once it had poor national attention and congress killed it. This pork money could be used to repair levees after Katrina, well she became against it.

It seems some will believe the half of truth and others will believe the half that is lie.

Its not the truth the whole truth and nothing but the truth iif half is a lie.

  24. kevinbrown Says:

In your ongoing coverage on this subject may I suggest that you include the below OFFICAL Alaskan Governament document which provides the best evidence yet that what Sarah Palin (and McCain) has been repeating over and over again is a complete lie. Take a look. http://dot.alaska.gov/ stwdplng/ projectinfo/ ser/ Gravina/ images/ 092107_palin_gap_release.pdf

    In Palins own words:

“Despite the work of our congressional delegation, we are about $329 million short of full funding for the bridge project,
and it’s clear that Congress has little interest in spending any more money on a bridge between Ketchikan and Gravina
Island,” Governor Palin added. “Much of the public’s attitude toward Alaska bridges is based on inaccurate portrayals of
the projects here. But we need to focus on what we can do, rather than fight over what has happened.”

This DOES NOT sound like "Thanks but no thanks". It is clear from her statement that she REGRETS that Alaska is "$329 short" of funds (from the lower 48) and that this is due to "misconceptions" in the lower 48 about Alaska Bridges (she actually admitted as much in her friendly sit-down with Hannity)

Also you might want to add to your Blog that while this "bridge to nowhere" is dead ...Palin supports another MORE EXPENSIVE ($600MILLION) bridge to nowhere linking Anchorage to Her hometown of Wasilla (pop. 9,000)

  25. tacitus Says:

Oops -- I meant to say "...in the tank!" (last paragraph).

  26. tacitus Says:

You know, Palin could have used any number of excuses for "changing her mind" on the Bridge to Nowhere. I have heard plenty of reasonable ones from her supporters on various message boards, like "she saw the light on earmarks and government waste" or "she came to realize that the only way to get Alaska's government spending under control was to begin weaning themselves of federal government largess", etc. etc.

But incredibly, they just decided that the best way to deal with the issue was to bluster her way through and hope no one would notice. The biggest problem for her is that she's adopted it as her major signature "government waste" sound bite, and she has nothing else to replace it with. The wise course would have been to drop the subject entirely and let the issue fade away, but she keeps repeating it and she going to keep getting hammered for it.

No wonder her favorability rating is in the take. She's turning out to be a one-trick pony.

  27. tacitus Says:

Well that was odd. Seems that WordPress has a little bug where comments with the same time stamp are out of order.

    Ho hum.

I'd like to see Palin confronted on this:

    What do you guys think?

  29. Tawdry Says:

Dreaming that her next interviewer directly asks her why she's repeating an out and out lie. McCain better watch out - yesterday she called the campaign the Palin/McCain campaign. Read yesterday that she took $50,000 from the Wasilla budget for roads to decorate her office. She put up red flocked wallpaper and according to the source, who by the way was her original supporter and mentor on the city council, said her office resembled a bordello. When she was confronted by this man about taking the money without the city council's approval she said she could do anything she wanted because she was the mayor.

  30. SpoxLogic Says:

I have to take issue with the word "misrepresents" in the headline. If she'd done it once or twice, that would be misrepresenting. By now, she and the McCain camp should know that everyone knows her statement is not true. Therefore, she is outright lying.
    Call it what it is!

  31. MrSquirrel Says:

If these two pathological liars can carry even 40% of the vote, it is a shame upon this nation. Do that many people not mind being lied to repeatedly?

Agree. News media should be all over this. Especially her time as mayor

I mean this is just sickening

  33. Xisithrus Says:

The bridge was intended to provide access to Ketchikan's airport on Gravina Island, which had a population of 50 in the 2000 U.S. Census. After (R)McCain and others railed against it, Congress dropped the specific earmark but kept the money in a transportation bill for Alaska.

Since thinkfast hasn't yet been posted, I guess I'll post this here.

Last night, I watched as Larry Kudlow tried to make the case that the main reason we are in this mortgage mess is because of low-income people who shouldn't have been able to get a loan, and the legislators who enabled them. This was patently false, and it enraged me that the Scar, or his co-host didn't challenge it.

The reason we have the current crisis isn't primarily because of low-income Americans trying to get a home for their family. It's because of entrepreneurial house flippers, who could get access to easy credit, namely interest-only loans, with the intent to fix and unload the houses quickly. They drove the prices up, and were the first to walk away from underwater loans, making the poor pay ever more for their loans, just to stay afloat.

Kudlow deserved to be verbally slapped, for trying to make poor people the bad guys, when it was really the same folk he always lionizes on his show: the entrepreneurs.

  37. DallasNE Says:

Palin is not the story so it is time to pack it in on this item. MSM has pointed out what the real record is. The story no longer has legs. Instead, let's talk about how John McCain thinks Spain is one of those nations out to hurt us. And if McCain won't even talk to Spain, what chance would we have to repair our very real foreign relations problems in places like, say, North Korea. http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20080919/ap_on_re_as/as_koreas_nuclear

Must be confidence from the atta-boys she gets from the script writers.
Where will she go when this play ends?
What will she do with all the prepared lines?
How does she face people knowing everyone that speaks english knows she constantly lies?
Oh, forgot. Everyone she sees everyday lies too.
    They are her best examples.
That's why she is getting better at this.
They all sit around and practice lies.
    How creative.

  40. ccokz Says:

    ccokzblog

Let's say you are Sharky hedge funds. You go to Lehman brothers and you like to borrow 1 mio shares of which company soever for 1 cent per sharefor 3 days what costs you approximately 10000 $. Then you flood the market with 1 mio shares. At first, the course will stay stable because nobody really understands why there is such a huge amount of papers of the respective company suddenly available, let's say they are at 10 dollars per share at the first day. You will still sell them at a stable course, minimum is 9 dollars.

Then you wait 48 hours. The course will have gone meanwhile beserk for the high availibility, let's say it's just at 6 $ only anymore. Then you buy them back at once.

Same symptom: Nobody really understands at first why the course should suddenly rise again, so you buy at a stable low price.

You make 4 dollars per share, what would be 4 mio dollars. Then you as Sharky Hedge Funds give the shares back to Lehman brothers. They simply just lost 4 mio dollars and had a revenue of 10000 dollars.

The market is simply too unflexible to get these sharks.

Lehman Bros had in january 2008 approximately 6 percent of its shares in stock on short sale, the number rose for short-selling itself to 25 percent in sep.

  41. cirrostratus Says:

It's frightening how well Palin and McCain lie. They do it so confidently, enthusiastically, and with such apparent sincerity. And when you talk to the people who believe in these two liars, they believe in them so deeply.

They believe even when you show them that what they've taken as gospel truths are flat out lies. They come up with rationalizations about why what is clearly in front of them must not be really true. How do you win against people willing to lie about anything to people who are desperately willing to believe all of those lies?
