“Nearly one in 10 Hispanics in the U.S. reported that in the last year police or other authorities have stopped them and asked them about their immigration status,” according to a study by the Pew Hispanic Center released yesterday. A majority of Hispanics worry about deportation, with 40 percent saying they worry a lot “and an additional 17% say they worry some that they themselves, a family member or a close friend may be deported.” In 2007, “federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents arrested more than 35,000 illegal immigrants, including unauthorized workers and immigration fugitives, more than double the number in 2006.” A record 276,912 immigrants were deported.
Living While Hispanic. It’s the new Driving While Black.
September 19th, 2008 at 11:16 amHow would it feel to bigoted white America to be Hispanically discriminated against? I have to say, this intimidation and these raids aren’t doing us any favors — now and in the future.

September 19th, 2008 at 11:35 amI wonder how many of these Hispanics are actually natural-born U.S. citizens. The word “Hispanic” (as well as derogatory names) has come to mean “illegal immigrant” in the minds of so many that these people believe all Hispanics to be here illegally.
I am a natural born citizen of the United States, and so are the majority of Hispanics in this country. And I would find it to be a royal pain in the butt if I had to carry my passport and my birth certificate with me at all times to proof to everybody that I belong here.

Police ask me if I’m a legal resident. I answer yes. But I don’t have my papers with me. So then I have to defend my legal residence from jail ?
Sounds like totalitarian govts where you always have to have your papers with you.

I believe most states have some law on the books mandating that you have to carry some form of ID with you at all times – driver’s license, student ID, library card, something.
The issue is that if you’re a blonde-haired, blue-eyed, light-skinned Aryan, you’re not gonna get spot-checked.
September 19th, 2008 at 11:49 amIt is certainly a “Two-party” system to which we have been subjected.
One party can do no wrong and does not have to do right. Case in point: Republicans (Palin, Meyers, Rove) can break any law they want and ignore all legal summonses without punishment.
The other party can do nothing right even when they do nothing wrong. Case in point: the racial profiling of Democrats who have broken no laws (Blacks and Hispanics) and are punished for no legal reason without due process.
Comes the Revolution!

September 19th, 2008 at 12:51 pmThis is a topic I loathe to comment on, but here goes (maybe my credibility too). Living in LA is unlike most places in the U.S.
September 19th, 2008 at 1:04 pmI remember the day our Mayor was elected (the morning after the election). I was driving to work and was cut off by an oncoming car who took a left turn right in front of me. As I SLAMMED on my brakes (and just avoided slamming into him) the nice young Hispanic man gave me the finger as he cut across the road.
Twenty minutes later, arriving at my business, I found my business along with a dozen others all vandalized. The windows on all of the business had been graffitied with gang signs with a glass acid. Everyones windows had to be replaced.
How many times have my wife or I been hit by a Hispanic driver without a license or insurance? Too many to count.
Please don’t even ask me about anything else.
I can’t tell you how refreshing it was when I visited my hometown, went to the bank and the atm was in english (no other options, just english).

Look at the earlier threads. Such are my awesome powers I even responded to myself before I’d written my original comment!

McCarthyism at it’s best. 1950’s any one?
OO! OO! Let’s spend millions of wasted taxpayer dollars and make a big wall instead of spending that money on improving our strained and over-loaded legal immigration processing system. Brilliant!
September 19th, 2008 at 1:54 pmHey Lone Voice,
I refered to McCarthyism in a previous post in a very derogatory manner. I’m sorry I’ve lived the life I have and experienced what I have. What exactly did I say you found offensive?

Rich H Says
Living in LA is unlike most places in the U.S.can’t tell you how refreshing it was when I visited my hometown, went to the bank and the atm was in english (no other options, just english).
Well when I lived in “Alphabet City” in Manhattan my building domiciled the only whites in the surrounding eight blocks, a total of 7 ‘WASPs’ in 8-block radius where Dominicans and Colombians fought over the turf, supplying coke to white BMW owners from swankier neighborhoods who were guaranteed to score on my block.
One of the lieutenants of the major dealer on my block, “Rolling Stone”, wanted to kill me because I was taking photos of their operation, but “Stone” was more practical and just asked for the film. As a precaution though they broke into my apartment and stole all my camera equipment that was next to my bed whilst I was asleep. They could have slit my throat right then and there.
When I moved to Jersey City (where I am now) the nearest store was and still is run by a Dominican and a Puerto-Rican.
Applying your logic to my experience I should have avoided the store altogether and I should have bought myself a gun, given that they were and are Hispanic and just two blocks from my house.
In fact the owners of my local bodega let me take basic supplies when I didn’t have the money to pay for them at the time, though they regularly refused credit to their “fellow Hispanics’.
The owners’ 22-year-old nephew who I;ve met a couple of times was just stop-lossed to serve a 3rd tour in Iraq (he just got there last week).
I grew up in a village of 300 in the ‘whitest’ and most civilized part of the English speaking world, in Surrey in England. From my perspective Americans can’t speak English, they just manage a bastard patois of the language. White Americans I’ve met can’t tell the difference between my accent, the Australian accent or the Irish accent. And yet despite my UK upbringing and US experiences I don;t regard all Americans as being ignorant, nor Hissanics as being a threat.
So I suggest you either get out of your car and actually interact with your fellow LA citizens on a human sociable level. or you pack up and go back to your hick town roots and return to the splendid isolation of your hometown and live in comfortable fear of the rest of the world. And maybe stay off the ‘internets’ from now-on because the scary Hispanics use it too!
Or you could try use the ‘intertubes’ to educate yourself to rise above your juvenile grasp of cause and effect and transitive argument. Who knows? One day you might get into a car crash on 405 and a ‘hispanic’ might come to pull you from the wreckage ( there are lots of them in LA so the odds are pretty good after all) and you’ll have to ask yourself whether its worth having your life saved only to have your wallet stolen in the process by some spic.
That’s a dilemma I know I’ll never have.
September 19th, 2008 at 2:22 pmYo 5th estate,
I need a lecture from someone so superior. Let’s see, I grew up in a small town (my first mistake) I moved to Boston (my second mistake) I moved to Alphabet City before there were any wasps (my third mistake). I have friends who are Black (even though I was chased down the streets of NY) I have friends who are Puerto Rican (not just you! even though the PR kids used to throw rocks at us white guys – all half dozen of us – when we walked down the street in Alphabet City). I married a Chinese girl.
September 19th, 2008 at 2:29 pmGod, what happened to me? How did I turn out so bad?

September 19th, 2008 at 3:03 pmYo Rich…
well,
1) “the nice young Hispanic man gave me the finger as he cut across the road.”
2) “Twenty minutes later, arriving at my business, I found my business along with a dozen others all vandalized. The windows on all of the business had been graffitied with gang signs with a glass acid. Everyones windows had to be replaced.
3) “How many times have my wife or I been hit by a Hispanic driver without a license or insurance? Too many to count.”
4) “I can’t tell you how refreshing it was when I visited my hometown, went to the bank and the atm was in english (no other options, just english).”
The implications of your comment being that immigrant Hispanics (the topic of the Post) were responsible for the damage to your business. that Hispanics predominantly drive without insurance and are bad drivers, and that in your English speaking home town there are now bad drivers and no vandalism and its a bastion of civility–ergo all small town white people are good and all city-dwelling Hispanics are criminals.
My response was to say that I too have had bad experiences with people of Hispanic origin but just because someone has a Hispanic background and that my own experiences have been as often bad as good (and more-often bad, given the impoverished neighborhoods I’ve lived over the years) I’m nonetheless disinclined to view my White English speaking roots as particularly preferable to others for many reasons.
You were damn damn right in fearing making your initial comment for the criticism it might engender, as evidenced by my response. It’s a sickening feeling when one commits to something sincerely felt in writing only to have it come out …ummm..incomplete I think may be the appropriate word.
I think you and I got off to a very bad start in this exchange. I tried to be as ’snotty’ as possible and I guess I succeeded.
As we used to say in the school yard in the middle of a pointless fight, “PAX?”
September 19th, 2008 at 3:51 pmHey get a grip on reality, there’s a difference between legal and illegal. Just saying. Though you wouldn’t know it from the admin.
September 19th, 2008 at 4:13 pmThere is a difference. Did I mention I adopted a child from overseas (he’s not white! Oh my god!)? Maybe not, did I mention I’ve paid close to 50k to make it legal, maybe not.
Do you have a problem with the obvious? Maybe.
When our country outsources our jobs and imports cheap labor to effectivley put the american worker out of business – I object to that. Hey they even do it with (relatively) high paid tech.’s. I have a problem with that too.
Oh yeah I noticed your snotiness. I kind of doubt you have ethnic friends, they couldn’t get past your phoniness.
Have fun, I’ve got better things to do.
Hi Rich,
September 19th, 2008 at 4:30 pmHave fun doing those better things.
Rich H…
As I said, I was snotty and reactionary and I apologize for being so. I’m not having “fun” with this exchange.
September 19th, 2008 at 4:32 pmI used to live in a a variety of very diverse communities. Now I live in the wonderbread state. I could go on all day about the problems associated with living with a whole slew of white trash undereducated simple minded haysedds and their dipshit pretending to be gangsta kids and their foul mouths and poor truck driving skills and mispelled grafitti and low test scores and lack of any ability to speak or write English properly as well as their piss poor work ethic and their sense of entitlement but what’s the point. It is what it is. I can live with it or move back to the those ethnically diverse places where everyone was trying to better themselves.
