McCain’s top economic adviser commits economic gaffe.

Earlier this week, Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) repeatedly erroneously referred to the Securities Investor Protection Corporation (SIPC) as the “SPIC.” Today on Fox News, McCain’s top economic adviser Douglas Holtz-Eakin — one of the “smart people” McCain said he relies on for economic policy — also referred to the “SPIC.” Watch it:

Holtz-Eakin mentioned “the SPIC” when discussing the “alphabet soup” of regulatory “agencies” — despite the fact that the SIPC is “neither a government agency nor a regulatory authority.” At least it’s now clear where McCain gets his faulty talking points.

Smarter than McCain does not actually mean that person is smart.

    Just saying....

We can all weep for the future if these numbnuts get elected.

No wonder Republicans are so against "big government." They apparently think every major corporation is actually government-run. First it was Titty McGee calling Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac "taxpayer funded," now this clown thinking SIPC is a government agency. Next they're gonna tell us that AIG is owned by the federal government!

    Again?

OMG -- it's contagious. Normally, Holtz-Eakin has been the McLame apologist and excuse provider (not to mention shiny object distractor -- blackberries, anyone?) for this campaign. But now that we see he can't keep anything straight either, perhaps the apologist needs an apologist.

Maybe Holtz-Eakin is just trying to make McDepends look less idiotic.

    If so, IT AIN"T WORKING!!!

OT; at http://www.commondreams.org, there is a story I read this a.m. in the Detroit Free Press about how Rethugs are trying to disenfranchise college students and people whose homes are in foreclosure from voting in Michigan.

With "advisors" like Holtz-"BlackBerry"-Eakin, maybe McSame should go back to just making stuff up.

  16. 49erDem Says:

    My favorite Holtz-Eakin funfact:

The nation's in economic chaos, the two major parties' candidates are presenting themselves to the public for consideration as President....

and Holtz-Eakin doesn't think it's time to write down on paper an economic plan.

Second favorite: without McCain, there would be no Blackberry (!!??)

Priceless. He's almost as good as Carly Fiorina.

Colbert tried to run as a candidate...who knew that Comedy Central had sponsored McCain, another parody candidate, as well?

    It's the only viable explanation....

Given Senator McCain's attitudes towards the Spanish PM, perhaps it was an oblique reference to a financial regulator of Italian heritage.

  23. Tired of being lied to Says:

Well, my friends, obviously if we have two brilliant men like this in these positions identifying this body as the "SPIC then the only thing to do is to officially change the name from "SIPC" to "SPIC." They are right and everyone/thing else is obviously wrong.

So let it be written, so let it be done.

  24. stateofthedivision Says:

SIPC vs. SPIC, you've got to be kidding. Haven't we done this three times?

The financial system is imploding, enough to take the air out of the room of a meeting between financial crisis managers and Congressional leaders.

The cause of this is greed. Neither McCon or Obama have identified executive incentive compensation as a player, a key root cause of risky CEO behavior. Corporate boards and regulators facilitated their schemes.

The taxpayer will end up with a $1 to $1.5 trillion tab. And for what? Meanwhile, our government continues spreading the poison of pay for performance to health care, education, etc..

  25. the Lone Voice of Reason Says:

Oh, pretty please let them keep helping him like that! The more gaffes Grandpa makes, the better.
