Surrogates for Sen. John McCain’s (R-AZ) presidential campaign rarely shy away from the chance to put out their talking points, regularly flacking on cable news programs. However, there is at least one cable news show they are avoiding: MSNBC’s The Rachel Maddow Show.
Discussing the lack of impact Gov. Sarah Palin’s (R-AK) inclusion on the McCain ticket has had with women voters (according to the latest CBS-New York Times poll), Maddow last night noted that McCain surrogates have repeatedly declined invitations to appear on the show:
MADDOW: Might it be that women care less about a candidate’s gender and more about a candidate’s position on the issues, like reproductive health, equal pay for equal work?
One note – we hope to have someone from the McCain campaign or another Republican guest on the show tonight to talk about this issue as we have contacted them about other issues on other nights. But no matter the topics, thus far at least, they have repeatedly said no one is available.
A long list then ran on the screen of McCain surrogates who have turned Maddow down, including senior campaign advisers Carly Fiorina, Douglas Holtz-Eakin, Meg Whitman, Ed O’Callaghan and others. Watch it:
The McCain campaign has entered into an increasingly combative relationship with the press, demanding that reporters show Palin “deference.” The freewheeling sessions aboard the so-called “Straight Talk Express” have been ditched in favor of a more scripted and disciplined message. The campaign has even attacked the media for scrutinizing Palin, and McCain himself recently canceled an interview with Larry King because a CNN reporter had roughed up campaign spokesman Tucker Bounds.
As Maddow noted, “[N]o matter the topic,” if an issue makes the campaign uncomfortable, it will probably just avoid it.
As Maddow noted, “[N]o matter the topic,” if an issue makes the campaign uncomfortable, it will probably just avoid it.
– - McCain should just come on Maddow’s show, make like Trump, and tell her she’s fired.
Wait, you mean he doesn’t have that authority either?
September 19th, 2008 at 4:45 pmIf this story picks up, it could prove to be very uncomfortable for McCain while she gets free exposure. She should keep a count of how days the McCain campaign has refused to appear.
September 19th, 2008 at 4:46 pmDeference? Last time I looked this was still a Democracy, thank you! WTF, Obama’s answering the hard questions, Hillary fielded the proverbial slings and arrows and Painin’s supposed to get tickled under the chin and “Gosh, isn’t she somethin’”? The Republican ticket’s moving at Ludicrous Speed and McWorse isn’t strapped down! No limits to their stupidy!

September 19th, 2008 at 4:47 pm“McCain Campaign Refuses To Appear On The Rachel Maddow Show”
That’s a given. Maddow is everything that McCain opposes: She is a lesbian, a woman with her own show, she is outspoken and doesn’t cave, and she asks tough questions. I looked for Fox News for more appearances for McCain’s koolaid campaign.

guess you could say they are just scared. You would think a guy who had been a pow wouln’t be scared of anything.
Just like rove, et al not wanting to testify. Someone might actually ask them an embarrassing question…..ya think?
Wonder why Obama isn’t running scared….oh yeah, he is intelligent enough to address the questions even if they aren’t favorable to him…..he still answers them….see fox interview with obama/oliely.
They have no way to defend themselves against the truth except to stay in isolation….heck of a way to run a political campaign.
September 19th, 2008 at 4:49 pmBut McCain was a POW and he didn’t have a kitchen table – and apparently they cut his balls off too.
September 19th, 2008 at 4:49 pmNot to worry, Rachel, they won’t come on because you have the knowledge, the insight and the facts to discredit SpinFest 2008!
Love your show, Rachel, keep up the good work! And don’t worry, you’re not missing much by not having McStain or Palin or any of their lapdogs on you show. By November 5th, no one will remember who these people are anyway.

September 19th, 2008 at 4:49 pmI know, I know, it’s a cliché, but it’s a good cliché:

September 19th, 2008 at 4:51 pmUsing the logic Republicans have employed in tagging attacks on Sarah palin as “sexist”, isn’t it just as sexist for McSame to avoid rachel Maddow’s show? After all, she’s a girl.
Sounds pretty sexist to me.
September 19th, 2008 at 4:52 pmRachael will have some comments and jokes about this.
Obama, I am sure, will appear on her show as many times as she pleases.
September 19th, 2008 at 4:53 pmIt’s difficult to determine what is it the top of the list of words that define “Republican” though it is neck and neck between “coward” and “liar”.
Rachel Maddow is absolutely the best.
September 19th, 2008 at 4:54 pmActually this is a smart move by the Palin/mccain handlers; If a semi-senile old white dude and a bimbo were placed in front of Rachel, there would be nothing but a pile of soiled Depends and melted lipstick on the chairs.
You go, Rachel!!

September 19th, 2008 at 4:58 pmOh, this is just too funny for words. The McCain campaign wants the press to treat Palin with “deference”, they insist that she not be scrutinized too closely, and they don’t want her anywhere near any media talking heads who aren’t GOP water carriers. They want her handled only with kid gloves.
Anybody caught treating Palin like a serious candidate is “sexist”.
Um…do these people even know what that word means? While they are looking that up, they might try flipping back a few pages and find “irony” while they’re at it.

September 19th, 2008 at 5:17 pmIt would appear that our trolls really think Sarah Palin is ready to run the country. They don’t share any reasons for thinking this, they just say it. If you counter their words, then you are being mean and unfair. The poor little dear, bless her heart.
Don’t the trolls realize that if Palin gets into office and ruins the country even more than now, they will be affected too? Or does it simply mean that they always put their party over their country? Trolls: What has the GOP done for your lately?

September 19th, 2008 at 5:24 pmThe fact that they won’t let Palin go on any show where she might actually get asked some questions about policies & experience tells you all you need to know– McCain and co. realize that Palin has no intelligent answers to important questions. And that would make her look like a ridiculous choice for VP- which she is. And that would make it look as though McCain chose her with almost no knowledge about her- which he did. And that would make reporters & certainly the public want to ask even more questions of Palin- which they should.

Whoopi Goldberg ask him if the judges he appoints would bring back slavery.
__________________________________________________________
Are you suggesting that Whoopi’s question was too difficult for him to answer, and therefore unfair?
In the first place, Whoopi meant that as a rhetorical question, to make a point. She didn’t expect McCain to have a prepared policy regarding slavery. She was trying to point out that McCain’s idea of “strict” (that is, conservative and regressive) interpretation of the Constitution could be a double-edged sword in that it could regress us back to a time we’d rather not revisit.
Your point is well taken, though, that the Fourteenth Amendment took care of the slavery issue. Whoopi probably should have made her remark about Brown v. the Board of Education — a decision that was a strict interpretation of the constitution, but was seen by most conservatives as “legislating from the bench”.
But this veers off from your original point, which was that you didn’t blame McCain for his refusal to go on the Maddow show because of the “outlandish” questions he received on The View. Is this the most (or only) “outlandish” question you can come up with?
You’re right — if McCain can’t even handle a snark remark from Whoopi Goldberg, he’s WAY too much of a lightweight to face any serious journalists like Rachel Maddow. Come to think of it, if he can’t handle Whoopi Goldberg, he’s too much of a lightweight to be President.

As a champion of experience and the centrist, populist message, a badge worn with pride throughout McCain’s career in the Senate, I was gutted by the Palin selection. I cannot in good conscience vote for a VP with zero foreign policy experience, a penchant for oral diarrhea in front of microphones, and whacked-out cultural beliefs.
Ridge or Lieberman would have been fantastic choices. McCain blew it.

D. The reverse big bang, due to their egos imploding on contact with each other

I think “worship” might be a bit of an overstatement. Personally, I enjoy TDS and the Colbert Report, and rarely miss them (but I don’t prostrate myself before them or anything). However, I (like most “libs”) get my news from a variety of sources and don’t depend on one media outlet to do my thinking for me.
Second, these shows honestly call themselves fake news, and they don’t pretend to be anything but entertainment — unlike “fair and balanced” media who spew propaganda while pretending to be objective. However, those of us who watch a number of different broadcast media notice that the “fake news” often delivers more real news than the other guys.
And the shows provide laughs. Which we need in these times.

Try to keep up, Nettles. I know it’s tough these days because so much is going on. The gloss is off. Latest polls show Palin with higher disapproval levels than approval levels. And, she’s doing worse with women than she is with men! Once we got to know her a little…. well, you know. The point is, McCain’s hysterical, panicky gambit looks like it’s failed.

I do think that during the Bush years, The Daily Show has sort of taken on the roll of the “Fool” in King Lear. September 19th, 2008 at 6:16 pmRe Whoopi Goldberg’s question to John McCain:
McCAIN: No, I want people who interpret the Constitution of the United States the way our founding fathers envision-
Slavery was not only legal, but encouraged when the Constitution was written by the founding fathers.
GOLDBERG: Should I be worried about being a slave, about being returned to slavery? Because certain things happened in the Constitution that you had to change.
Things that had to be changed in the Constitution… Let’s see, those would be amendments. wouldn’t they them-libs. So she was right, if the Constitution were interpreted strictly as the founding fathers envisioned, slavery would be an issue.
By the way, it was the 13th, not the 14th amendment that abolished slavery.

Seniors are desperately afraid of losing their retirement.
The working public sees little hope for them as $$$ is spend on Wall Street.
McCain is strutting, and uttering “Fire him” and “I know how to fix this.” Grampa, if you were not part of the problem, why haven’t you fixed it in 26 years? It was your party that deregulated the industry, something you endorsed for years.
Obama, on the other hand, is calm, his responses are measured, and he is acting presidential.
THIS is the guy who should be president. THIS is the guy who doesn’t get rattled and spout off inane responses. In a crisis, we all should want the calm, collected and reasoned leader.
September 19th, 2008 at 6:57 pmI greatly fear that McCain is losing it – and losing it rapidly. His gaffes, memory lapses and misspeech could all be excused if they occurred rarely, but they are occurring with greater frequency.

September 19th, 2008 at 7:06 pmbackup, first off, is that a comprehensive list of questions posed to each candidate? Or is it a representative list, in your opinion?
Do you think any of those questions Gibson asked Sarah Palin are in any way beyond the bounds of responsibility for a journalist conducting the first national broadcast interview of an unknown quantity just nominated for the second-highest office in the land?
Obama’s positions and expertise are well known, since he’s been running for president for seventeen months and has been scrutinized very closely (despite what the right-wing pundits like to claim). He hasn’t made the kind of foreign-policy blunders that Sarah Palin’s running mate has made, and as a member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, his foreign policy credentials are fairly solid. In any case, it’s likely that he would have fielded the questions put to Governor Palin with practiced ease, thus resulting in a boring interview. Questioning him about whether he should choose Hillary Clinton as Veep, on the other hand, or whether he would debate McCain at a town hall are questions well tailored to generate controversy.
The fact that Charlie Gibson’s questioning seemed tougher on Palin than it actually should have seemed is a testament to the lack of preparedness of the candidate for the office she seeks, not a reflection on the quality of the interview.

Sheesh, backdoor… this comment makes even less sense than your usual nonsense. What’s up? Having to defend McCalin/Pain, no matter how badly they embarrass themselves, getting to you?
Poor li’l feller… all tuckered out.

Get real, TP.
If Gov. Palin was having a “lack of impact with women voters” you would not be running 12 smear stories a day about her.
Though I am a long time supporter of Senator McCain, going back to 2000, I will not be voting for him in November.
___________
Wow… this one is hysterically funny.
TP is running what, “12 smear stories a day”… BUT, when poor Nettles makes a comment like “a penchant for oral diahrrea” or “whacked-out cultural beliefs”, it’s what… nuanced, informed opinion?
Oh… the irony… (undoubtedly lost on Nettles…)

But something tells me there’s going to be a lot of whining and crying after the VP debate.
I’m betting there will be no debate. I am betting that she will have to rush back to Alaska to attend to her daughter who is having a miscarriage.
September 19th, 2008 at 8:09 pmThe DoubleTalk Express wants to avoid going down the Maddow highway. Can’t say that I blame them; Anyone lacking command of facts, and their interconnections, could never appear with Rachael and come out looking good.
Rachael is an American Treasure!
September 19th, 2008 at 8:23 pmot but a very bizarre
story at c&l about a republican
delegate and his misadventures
at the convention.

September 19th, 2008 at 8:49 pmGOOD! It’s more hilarious when they don’t show. 1 full hour of sanity and truth is kinda nice…I know which news shows to watch if I want to be lied to – but I do think Rachel should continue scrolling the never-ending, ever-growing list of McSame liars, that’s NEWS! Their fear is refreshing.

is your name

September 19th, 2008 at 9:22 pmjoe cantwell, I think you may have missed the subtle humor operating in Mr. Interior’s post. See, by pretending that Rachel Maddow is a boy, the erudite Mr. Interior is making a funny about the lesbian Ms. Maddow.
This is the kind of right-wing humor that fueled the tremendous success of the “Half Hour News Hour” at Faux News.
Well done, Lush Interior! Capital bit of humor! You know what tpped me off that it was sarcasm? The fact that you “thought” Rachel Maddow was a boy, even though her name (Rachel, decidedly a girl’s name) was in the headline. But for that unlucky happenstance, Mr. Interior’s wickedly sly wit may have gone over too well by half.
September 19th, 2008 at 10:00 pmThe “war hero” McSame can’t face the truth.
Rachel, you are more of a hero than McSame is. He’s of such high moral character, like adulterer, liar, self-promoting war hero.
McSame = bu$h= conservanazi scumbags.

September 19th, 2008 at 11:28 pmFor a fact Rachel would slice, dice and fillet these lying bastards.

September 19th, 2008 at 11:40 pmYou posters should feel ashamed making fun of a pretend war hero who can’t raise his arms above his shoulders or his McOrgan(tm) above…well…anything, including itself.
Y’all need to show some deference to the King of Pork and his clever choice Sarah-Cuda, the Moose Princess. The guy is much more clever than you might guess, even in his advanced stage of senility. After all, who is more suited to changing his Grampers(tm) than a mother of five kids and a grandmother of… how many?
September 19th, 2008 at 11:47 pmNow thats ‘change’ you can believe in.
joe cantwell… do you think Ms. Lush Interior will forgive me?
I sure hope so.
maybe I can say I was making a funny?
September 20th, 2008 at 12:01 amMaybe McCan’t and Company would come out and play if Rachel didn’t play so hard. ’smatter Palin, you can skin a moose but you can’t go toe to toe with Maddow?
Hard to call it sexist when it’s another woman verbally beating you senseless.
But it would be so cool if she ticked Grandpa off and he lost his temper at the dinner table.
September 20th, 2008 at 2:26 amIf McZheimers went on Rachel’s show, he’d probably forget why.

Pretty sad FOOL. Time to increase your medication. The left doesnt DO hero worship. That is you projecting again. The thing is we arent nearly as stupid as you. So the fact YOU WORSHIP. Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity and a whole host of other ignorant bloviating screechmonkeys doesnt really mean ANYTHING about the left. YOU are a moron
September 20th, 2008 at 9:42 amYou know Maddow is doing well when the Republicans are too afraid to even appear on her show. Barack Obama answered questions from Bill O’Reilly. So why is McCain that afraid of Rachel Maddow that he won’t even send an aide on her show?
I hope the Dems use the lack of unscripted interviews from McCain and especially Palin to show that if McCain-Palin are too scared to answer questions from the press, then how could they possibly be capable of handling unscripted terrorist attacks from Osama Bin Laden?
September 20th, 2008 at 1:34 pmTracy__5 Says:
So why is McCain that afraid of Rachel Maddow that he won’t even send an aide on her show?”
It would be a waste of campaign money…considering the low number of people who watch the show.

You are a liar and a fool. Why do you bother with such ignorant and useless posts?
http://news.aol.com/newsbloggers/2008/09/19/rachel-maddow-ratings-are-in-shes-cleaning-house/
Former Air America Radio anchor Rachel Maddow just got her own show on MSNBC, and the ratings are through the roof! Her show has averaged at 1.8 million viewers, proving her success and even topping Keith Olberman’s ratings.
