The SEC has had a long history of problems, especially during Republican administrations where oversight is lacking.

Who can forget the 1987 stock market crash where sell orders of large clients were handled first. I know someone who had a stop loss in place only to find the sell executed hours after the stock hit the loss. Hours later meant that this person saw another 20% loss in value of the stock. Her 200 shares were crowded out by the big boys.

Today's issue with short selling is just another example of the big boys profiting at the expense of average Americans. Both times the issue has been lack of enforcement of existing rules and regulations. Passing more rules and regulations is only a small part of the answer. Holding people accountable is a much larger part of the answer. Nobody went to jail in 1987 so it was to be expected that the same mistakes would be repeated at a later time. Unless people actually go to jail we can expect to see corrupt practices repeated in the future. This is not rocket science.

If this wasn't so serious, it would almost be funny.

All if have to say is that given the facts, and only the facts, let alone the truth, if this country allows our ignorance and fear to get in the way of electing Obama, God help us, because only God can!

What a pander...is there anything McCain won't say to get elected?

And what's the point of having Cuomo at the SEC when you're going to make Phil Gramm your Secretary of the Treasury?

I can imagine that if ANY President of the United States asked the SEC chairman to resign, it would happen. It wouldn't matter who it was. The next step is to ask Congress to do whatever procedure was set up for getting rid of these people. I mean, surely there was some mechanism put in place to fire, say, a Fed chairman who couldn't do the job, right?

"Technically" you cant go to war without a declaration of war from Congress. And "technically" US interrogators cant torture prisoners. And "technically" you cant sign bills into laws and add a few sentences which allow you to violate the same laws. And "technically" you cant disclose the identities of CIA agents. And "technically" you cant fire the chairman of the SEC.

Dear Citizen:
Are you ready yet for the November 4th Elections? How about your friends, family, and neighbors?
More Americans are expected to vote this year than ever before in history, so don’t be left out! Be sure to ask everyone you know the following questions:
?	Are you registered to vote? If you moved recently, have you updated your voter registration?
?	Did you apply for an Absentee Ballot? Do you know your state may not require any reason?
?	Can you find your local Polling Place? Do you know it may have changed from last time?
The answers to these questions -- and all your voting needs -- can be found at www.StateDemocracy.org -- the FREE 1-Stop citizen empowerment portal that Delivers Democracy to your Desktop! StateDemocracy is among the Internet’s first (since 2001) and most encompassing civic empowerment tools.
In order to boost voter participation this year, StateDemocracy.org is offering FREE widgets for all 50 states. You can simply download and embed these widgets into your own website so your visitors can register to vote, get an absentee ballot or find their local polling place.
Lobby Congress Via StateDemocracy
StateDemocracy.org also equips you to maintain an active dialog with your state and federal lawmakers once they are elected. And RIGHT NOW is an especially opportune time to contact your U.S. Senators and House Member, as Congress takes up major legislation on such issues as offshore oil drilling, another economic stimulus package and all federal appropriations bills over the next few weeks.
As you lobby your elected officials, remember that lawmakers view your constituent input as reflective of scores of other citizens who felt similarly, but didn’t have (or take) the time to share their opinions.

George Will on This Week: "The question is: who in this crisis looked more presidential, calm and unflustered? It wasn't John McCain, who, as usual, substituting vehemence for coherence, said: 'Let's fire somebody', and he picked one of the most experienced and conservative people in the administration, Chris Cox, and for no apparent reason, or at least none that he vouched safe, he said fire Chris Cox at the SEC. It was unpresidential behaviour by a presidential aspirant."
George Will later in the roundtable: "John McCain showed his personality this week and made some of us fearful."
Yes, they are fearful, that he is going to lose.

Huh??? WTF??? McCain is claiming he's going to run the country in a mafia-like manner? Why doesn't he just say he would make Cox a deal he couldn't refuse?

Haven't we had enough of power-trip thug tactics from the White House? Why in the world does McCain think this attitude will impress us?

they are lost, and not worth my health...

just wish their actions weren't so consequential to the rest of us...

Maybe the McCain people can convince the debate hosts to let McCain send in his responses. He will be as dumb--and probably dumber--come debate time.

#26 Saterive,

When McCain said he will fire the SEC chairman, right after the bad news surfaced..he meant to use the occasion to show how decisive he can be as a president, but such talk did not help him..it backfired instead.
His words showed that he will take hasty decisions without rationalization or very thorough examination.
Not good signs of leadership.

My impression of the 60 Minutes interviews was that they were friendly to McCain and hostile to Obama. McCain got to let slide why Palin doesn't do interviews and Obama was repeatedly questioned why he thought he should be president after he answered the question. Fact checkers will probably have a field day with McCains statements that went unchallenged by the interviewer.
