Today, Vice President Cheney and White House Chief of Staff Josh Bolten spent the day in Congress trying to convince conservatives to accept the administration’s bailout package. Politico reports, however, that “House Republicans rose up en masse against their vice president.” ThinkProgress has compiled a list of conservatives who have declared opposition to the administration’s $700 billion bailout:
Sen. Jim Bunning (R-KY)
Sen. Jim DeMint (R-SC)
Rep. Scott Garrett (R-NJ)
Rep. Darrell Issa (R-CA)
Rep. Marilyn Musgrave (R-CO)
Rep. Mike Pence (R-IN)
Rep. Dana Rohrabacher (R-CA)
Sen. Richard Shelby (R-AL)
“They were in worse shape when they left than when they came in,” said one lawmaker who was in the caucus meeting with Cheney and Bolten. “These were the wrong guys…The problem is that they’ve used up a lot of good will.” Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich called the administration’s bailout “just wrong.” (Let us know in the comments if we’ve missed anyone.)
The ship done sunk! Now’s the time to shoot the rats.
September 23rd, 2008 at 6:15 pmWith that slimball Issa signing on to not liking the bailout makes me think that using the Paulson plan as a base is an even worse idea. Why can’t they look at other proposals? Why?
September 23rd, 2008 at 6:16 pmWait until their campaign managers report back to them and say “All your Wall Street Donors just called…”
September 23rd, 2008 at 6:18 pmLooks like Dick Cheney needs to order 7 more man-sized safes.
September 23rd, 2008 at 6:18 pm“I don’t know anyone who’s sold on this rescue plan,” said Rep. Wally Herger (R-CA).
– - This catastrophe in D.C. reminds me of writer William Goldman’s famous line about a place on the opposite coast: “Nobody In Hollywood knows anything.”
September 23rd, 2008 at 6:19 pmIssa doesn’t like it because there’s no earmarks for him. That goes for the rest of the CA republicans.
September 23rd, 2008 at 6:19 pm“These were the wrong guys…The problem is that they’ve used up a lot of good will.”
Well that’s a uniquely, gentle way of putting it.
September 23rd, 2008 at 6:20 pmI thought Repukes were all hot for Wingnut Welfare.
It must be that there’s nothing in bailout for *them*.
September 23rd, 2008 at 6:24 pmheh, even the republicans know this is going to go badly.
Who would agree to this absolute arrogance of greed?
September 23rd, 2008 at 6:26 pmYeah, Saitrev – either that or they’ve all suddenly been diagnosed with terminal cancer….
*eyeroll*
September 23rd, 2008 at 6:27 pmmultilee Says: “Why can’t they look at other proposals? Why?”
Because as Poulson hemmed and hawwed over this morning: THERE AREN’T ANY! The rethugs deny the existence of any Democrat Plan, of which “No Bailout” is the most attractive, and refuse to reconsider any reasonable plan by reasonable rethugs.
My solution: Set the bailout at the $700 Billion and send the bill to Poulson and company. He has a net worth of 1/2 billion–all stolen from the markets. Just go down the list of CEO’s in the finance and defense sectors (Haliburton in particular) over the last 20 years ans assess them up to 90% of their net worth until the bailout is accomplished. Even though he is one of the good guys, Bill Gates should be included. He didn’t get it all on his own. He had help from the Rethug crooks, at least in driving up the market.
September 23rd, 2008 at 6:28 pmI’ve yet to hear boo from my representative, Mike Conaway, R-TX. He’s a certified public accountant, thus he took an oath to uphold the public trust. That could explain his silence….either that or he’s written this pesky citizen off.
September 23rd, 2008 at 6:28 pmIs it just me or are the freaks avoiding all threads bailout related like kryptonite?
September 23rd, 2008 at 6:29 pmShelby and Bunning were in the hearing today and asked very good questions of Bush’s F-Troop.

#14 Thank you Crusty….this whole thing has me in a rage (my co-workers are staying away from me from all the ranting I’ve done today)
September 23rd, 2008 at 6:40 pmthe gop is in revolt so they can suddenly and without warning take up the mantle of reformers…..it’s funny to watch.
September 23rd, 2008 at 6:43 pmAhhhh. At last, a bipartisan spirit has descended upon Washington, D.C.
That GDumbya . . . what a “uniter” he is!
September 23rd, 2008 at 6:44 pmDemocracy sucks.
Lets just trust Ayatolla Paulson to do the right thing with a blank check worth more than an unneccesary 5 year occupation. Where is Mussolini when you need him?
September 23rd, 2008 at 6:45 pmIn order to vote or not vote on it McCain would have to actually be there…
Sure hope he’s got “Senate chambers” saved as a “favorite destination” on the TomTom in the Double Talk Express Bus to Nowhere.
September 23rd, 2008 at 6:47 pmRepublicans are in a real bind here. Their financial support comes from the financial criminals, their instincts are always to suck up to the financial criminals and give them what they demand, but their voters realllly don’t like the old “bailout” story — and there is an election coming up within weeks. What to do? What to do?
They will talk tough and then vote on this thing in the middle of the night. And then blame it on the Democrats.
September 23rd, 2008 at 6:48 pmThe Lone Ranger and Tonto are surrounded by Indians. The Lone Ranger says, What will we do now, Tonto? Tonto replies, What you me We, White Man?
September 23rd, 2008 at 6:49 pmImpeach Pelosi, Cheney and Bush and Save the Constitution.
Impeach Palin and Save the Rule of Law!
I believe my rep, Jeb Henserling (R-TX) was none too pleased as well.

Thanks Walt, you the man. Okay, that makes two that are saying one thousand eight hundred billion dollars—-not seven hundred billion dollars. They are both using Reuters as their source. Why don’t we all start giving the correct figure and stop giving the $700 billion figure?
I have emailed about 50 different media. Why don’t we all do that and insist they use the correct figure of $1.8 TRILLION!!!

Hell, he never shows to vote on anything anyway, he probably forgot where his office is, he hasn’t been there in so long.
September 23rd, 2008 at 6:56 pmBush and Cheney trying to get in one last f*** you to the American public….and why not?
They’ve gotten away with everything else so far with zero accountability, including the $100’s of billions of dollars for the “Iraq War”, billions of which have been stolen or are unaccounted for.
The American public have themselves to blame for being such sedated, ill-informed, pathetic, gullible sheep, so willing to bend over and take it in the a** without questioning their so-called “leaders”.
September 23rd, 2008 at 7:01 pmBanemann I mean Bachmann… yes Michelle Bachmann is against it at least she says.
She’s still an untended floor buffer but that’s the story.
September 23rd, 2008 at 7:03 pmWhile I would like to believe that they have finally realized it’s asinine to give Bushco another blank check, I fear that it’s part of the rebranding of the GOP. Just another issue over which they can feign “moderation” and separation from Chimpy.
September 23rd, 2008 at 7:05 pm“I don’t know anyone who’s sold on this rescue plan,” said Rep. Wally Herger (R-CA).
quit calling it a “rescue plan” and those sold are even more scarce.
i know this label was an attempt to sweeten the deal…
maybe those tricks don’t work so well anymore?
September 23rd, 2008 at 7:05 pmI smell a rat. This is not such an urgent crisis.
Democrats are meant to pass the bailout bill on their own so the Repubs can use it against them.
Big gov’t Dems bailing out the rich elite paid with tax increases. Dems are 4 more years of Bush. etc…..
September 23rd, 2008 at 7:06 pmIraq War pricetag about $3 TRILLION

September 23rd, 2008 at 7:10 pmI wonder how long this bluff, this charade, will last. In its present form, I suspect that all the repubs will dance to the tune of their handlers very soon along with some surprises from the Democrats. Things never change, don’t ya know.
September 23rd, 2008 at 7:15 pmThis means the GOP will now hustle to get their demands on the package met then pass it so the Republicans can take credit for “saving us all from the Republicans” who made this mess in the first place.
September 23rd, 2008 at 7:15 pmdbadass Says:

Like garlic is to vampires.
September 23rd, 2008 at 7:15 pmThe mask has come off and even the most naive and low information (ill-informed) voter now sees what the last 8 years were about.
Exactly, m3vega. This appears too contrived. Much like the feigned panic to “drill here, drill now”. The GOP knows it’s their only hope to get public support while Chimpy is still in play.
September 23rd, 2008 at 7:16 pm… and watch out.
you know what happens when we get out hopes up…
it ain’t over. by a long shot.
bushco will not be leaving easily, if at all.
September 23rd, 2008 at 7:19 pmdbadass — that occurred to me as well, as well as all of the free-marketers…not one peep.
By now, I believe that we are beginning to relearn the fact that laissez-faire capitalism just doesn’t work. The foxes didn’t do a very good job of guarding the henhouse, and now all of the chickens are long gone..
September 23rd, 2008 at 7:22 pmIf this bailout goes through, it will be the end of democracy in the United States.
September 23rd, 2008 at 7:25 pmLibertyLover:
September 23rd, 2008 at 7:25 pmI agree but won’t a fox or two at least come around to knock upon the door asking if I might have been wise enough to save a chicken or two and ask politely that I might share?
dbadass – nope, it looks like the foxes are just chasing their tails until the chicken come home to roost.
(How’s that for cliche???)
September 23rd, 2008 at 7:28 pmHmmm. Wasn’t the Iraq war supposed to pay for itself, too? Why should we believe anything this administration says? After all, they’re doing a “heckuva job” aren’t they?
September 23rd, 2008 at 7:29 pmThe smoking gun for this crisis may be in the shape of a champagne glass.
For Wall Street.
Maybe we should all stock up on duct tape and plastic.
To bury our money in the back yard.
http://www.wilytrax.com
September 23rd, 2008 at 7:39 pmI haven’t heard how much interest we, the taxpayers, will get out of all this money they’re talking about. I think 5.5% would be reasonable.
Why is the idea of pouring money into the laps of the irresponsible so easy when anything anywhere close to health care is out of line? The idea of sinking half a billion into National Health Care sounds a lot better to me. Fck the walstreet tycoons. Put it all into health care, then when the Second Great Depression hits, we can all at least be healthy.
September 23rd, 2008 at 7:44 pmAnd has anyone in the press noticed that the Bush administration has spent the last 3 years ignoring all the warning signs and the last year insisting the economy was just going through an ‘adjustment’ and then MAGICALLY when the poo hits the propeller they come up with a $700-billion ‘plan’ in less than a week?
September 23rd, 2008 at 7:53 pmLibertyLover Says:
If this bailout goes through, it will be the end of democracy in the United States.
Democracy ended in 2000 when Bush was selected by the SCOTUS.
September 23rd, 2008 at 7:53 pmOh my, ts, not bs, trillions. I actually agree with Newt? It’s wrong, wrong, wrong, just like everything else bush. Republicans should be ashamed, they should have been standing up a long time ago and we probably wouldn’t be here.
September 23rd, 2008 at 7:57 pmWow, some hardcore neocons finally show they have a conscience in-regards to their constituents. Someone better wake Pat Robertson and his bible buddies, this may be a sign the end is at hand!
September 23rd, 2008 at 8:02 pmMy rep, Garrett, is on that list. He’s useless, but I’m glad he’s opposing the bailout. I do have exception to him calling it the Paulson/Pelosi plan though. What’s Pelosi got to do with the meltdown?
September 23rd, 2008 at 8:02 pmif this thing goes through and those mofos are late by so much as a minute on a payment back to us, I say we jack up their rate to something in the mid 30’s and charge them a late fee as well…
September 23rd, 2008 at 8:07 pmummm….lets pretend I originally bought 100 shares in a sub-prime ’secured’ investment vehicle at $10 bucks per. and their value doubled to just before the crash, ‘making’ me a 100% profit ($1000). Then those shares crash to $1 each.
I’ve now ‘lost’ $1000 profit–because I thought the economy was “strong” like I;d been told— and I’ve also lost $900 in real money (which has devalued as well now so it’s more like $950 lost).
Now Paulson wants to force me to buy the same thing I lost almost all my money on, not at $1 a share but at $20 a share? If not, Paulson warns, you’re going to lose money!!!
Does that sound about right?
September 23rd, 2008 at 8:17 pmI think Pete & M3Vega are Absolutely correct about the smell of RAT in the air.
I URGE all to read this:
DON’T TAKE THE BAIT: How to Lose an Election in 10 Easy Steps
http://www.dailykos.com/storyonly/2008/9/23/8591/39629/870/607298
Step 6. Watch with an admixture of bemusement and horror as congressional Republicans oppose the bill en masse.
Step 8.
Watch in abject horror as the bailout plan fails to curb the market downfall. This is eminently predictable, since we’re in an asset devaluation, not a liquidity crisis. In other words, the problem with the economy isn’t that banks need $1 trillion to feel confident about making more loans. The problem is that banks leveraged more than the entire world’s GDP in mortgage-backed securities and credit default swaps alone–and that paper is barely worth a fraction of its former outrageously inflated value. There isn’t enough money to throw at this problem and still make a dent. And even if you print the money, the rest of the world is likely to call in their chips.
Step 9. Watch as Republicans tell America that we we would have weathered the economic crisis had there been no bailout or just a straight-up giveaway to the banks, but that Democrats killed the economy by allowing irresponsible minority borrowers to pay off their mortgages at a lower rate, thereby killing the value of those mortgages and sending home prices into steeper decline and lowering the value of the mortgage-based leverage held by the banks.

Many are not … if the goppers can get the dems to support this, against the will of the people, and they play theatrics – enough to get in the media, uprising against this bailout then they hope/think their numbers will improve. I believe this is a desperate tactic. When have these goppers EVER cared about the will of the people except during election time?
