Bush administration has ‘no plans’ to declassify ‘grim’ Afghanistan NIE before the election.

ABC News reports that the Bush administration has “no plans to declassify” the forthcoming National Intelligence Estimate on Afghanistan before the election:

U.S. intelligence analysts are putting the final touches on a secret National Intelligence Estimate (NIE) on Afghanistan that reportedly describes the situation as “grim”, but there are “no plans to declassify” any of it before the election, according to one US official familiar with the process. [...]

According to people who have been briefed, the NIE will paint a “grim” picture of the situation in Afghanistan, seven years after the US invaded in an effort to dismantle the al Qaeda network and its Taliban protectors.

The plan to cover up the “grim” reality of the war in Afghanistan is not surprising given the Bush administration’s history of “selectively declassifying” such reports for political gain.

I posted this in a earlier thread.
Does it seem like Bush is manipulating the election on purpose?
    You bet ya.

  2. tom says:

Hopefully, some true patriot will leak it.

  3. Who Lied Today? says:

    Keeping it classified helps McCain.

Congress caved on offshore oil drilling

Fother chuckers! Kick the barstids out of Washington. I’m sick of Congress and BushCo greasing the skids for big oil and Wall Street.

  5. spencers mom says:

They don’t need to release the NIE for Afghanistan. The American people are waking up to the fact that Obama called it months ago. The same with Pakistan.

And they are sitting up and taking notice of Obama on the economy. He appears calm, serious and thoughtful, but not weak. McStain is soiling himself trying to figure out what to say or what to do.

I’m lovin’ me some Obama more and more each day! But let’s keep our eye on the ground game and let’s not stop until the polls close on November 4th.

    PEACE

A little fresh info might actually help the dotard mcmaverick, since he’s missed all his committee meetings on the Afghan conflict -
but I’m sure Dubbie and Dickie are doing every duplicitous back-channel thing they can to help their pals “maintain and enhance revenues” even after they leave office, which means keeping a R in the WH.

John McCain – Country (owes him a free pass) First

Obiously there is no good news in the estimate or else it would be released to the public. Time to get out of Iraq and Afghanistan and let those people settle their own differences. Afterall, the mission has been accomplished and the surge worked.

  9. sectionop92 says:

It’s the November 6th surprise! After Barack does his victory lap, Bush will try to dump on him with this. If Dumbya was anymore transparent, he’d be replacing Jessica Alba in the next Fantastic Four movie.

  10. 5th Estate says:

Since I think 2003, but certainly since the summer of 2004 the NIE has never been promptly published.

NIE = Not In an Election.

WE PAID FOR THAT REPORT. It’s ours. We can and should demand to see it.

It’s gotten to the point that I have to wonder if Bush’s plan is to destroy our government, after all Grandpa Prescott Bush did business with the Nazi’s and wanted to overthrow Pres. Roosevelt, maybe he’s carrying on a family tradition.

I just saw some figures flashed on the screen on the Bloomberg Financial Channel.
I have the sound off. I don’t remember the exact figures but it went something like this:
2009 Federal budget deficit: $468 billion dollars
Cost of “bailout: $1.2 trillion dollars
Cost of US wars $800 billion dollars

I assume they meant the estimated final cost of the wars and proposed bailout.
Bush and his gang have dug the grave of the US Federal Government, they used 9-11 as cover for doing it.
Remember when he told us to go to the mall and spend after 9-11.

a bit OT, but election related:

remember my outrage last night, about bill fookin clinton on letterman?

hell, i thought i was the only one who saw it, at least the only only who was pissed off about it…

i don’t know who this guy is, but he says exactly what needs said, and i think the message needs passed on.

    A Note to Bill Clinton

    Paul Slansky

Given that we would never have had the odious George W. Bush in the White House in the first place if it wasn’t for your bl0w jobs, Bill, it seems obvious that you owe it to the people of this country, and especially to the parents whose kids died in the Iraq War that Gore would never have started, and to all the parents whose kids would be killed in the WarFest that would be a McCain/Palin — sorry, Palin/McCain administration — to do everything in your power to get Barack Obama elected.

But that’s not what you’re doing, Bill, and it’s not going unnoticed. We see your rage, Bill, it’s too huge to hide. We see that — as Chris Rock so brilliantly pointed out — it pains you to even speak Obama’s name. We see you petulantly rooting against him even as you go through the motions of doing the barest minimum on his behalf to avoid being blamed if he loses.

You’re not fooling anyone, Bill. [...] [MUST READ]

If Obama loses a close election — one in which even one state where you could have made a difference goes for McCain because you sat home and pouted — it will be on you. We will remember that you couldn’t be bothered to rise above your petty resentments for something as trivial as saving your country from the enemies of everything you profess to believe in. We forgave you for Monica, Bill, but we won’t forgive you for this.

damn right. jeez that pissed me off.

wonder if he’ll redeem himself tonight on the DAILY SHOW.

Our stupid endless pointless imperial occupation of Afghanistan? We need to end it now. Same goes for occupied Iraq. Basically, we just need to back up and back track and eliminate all the stupid right-wing deregulations that have occurred under Reagan, Bush I, Clinton and Bush 2. We need to re-regulate our financial markets. We need to dump NAFTA, GATT and WTO and rebuild our tariff walls, so that imported goods from China would cost the same as goods Made in USA. That way, LL Bean could stop selling Chinese communist made goods (about 90% of their sales items now) and go back and sell products made in Maine, made in New England and made in USA.
We need to export something other than debt and craftily-packaged recycled mortgage paper.

  15. nofltwlt says:

If Bush again will not tell Americans the truth of his disastrous reign of incompetence then it is up to the media to speculate, on the air, as to what this report will say when it does come out.

This report MUST affect the upcoming election. All that this administration, with the help of John McCain, has done is pertinent to John McCain’s intellectual, moral and ethical fitness for office.

  16. MapleStreet says:

    3. Who lied – it has been in an earlier item on TP that Bush didn’t speak because he didn’t want to negatively impact the McSame campaign.

  18. SKdeA says:

    NIE: We’re losing.
    they hate to admit it.
No one can ever win in Afghanistan – not even the Afghans. The place is cursed.
