War in Afghanistan is now ‘15 times more’ deadly than Iraq.

Brandon Friedman at VetVoice writes today that “one year ago — last September — the hostile fire death rates in Iraq and Afghanistan were roughly equal. But now, in terms of hostile fire death rates, what was once seen as the ’safer’ theater, Afghanistan has now exploded to the point that it’s nearly 15 times more dangerous for American troops than Iraq.” Using causality figures from the last 30 days, Friedman finds:

Hostile fire death rate in Iraq: 7 deaths per 146,000 troops (.005 percent)
Hostile fire death rate in Afghanistan: 7 deaths per 10,000 troops (.07 percent)

Please note that the administration is going to keep the soon-to-be completed NIE on Afghanistan classified until after the election.

  2. backup Says:

Is it 15 times more deadly because the rate has gone up in Afghanistan or because the rate has gone down in Iraq.

This would be more meaningful with last September's rates.

Mission Accomplished! Zone No. 2 is beginning to destabilize in rapid fashion.

And who said we shouldn't put anything into Afghanistan?!

Oh yeah, it was Bush and his enablers.

Maybe the third time will be the charm. Wait a minute...

  4. spencers mom Says:

Yes, once again Obama was/is correct, and Bush/McStain are just catching up.

I hope this gets the attention it deserves, especially given the politically timed release of the NIE - after the election in November.

    PEACE

And leave it to the hideously self-important twit in the smoking jacket to try and turn someone else's death into a "statistical issue". You embarrass yourself every time you show up here, backdoor.

So, what's up w/ the over-sized corncob pipe and aviator shades? That's quite a get up now.. w/ the epaulets and fake medals... channeling your "inner Douglas McArthur"???

  7. phuckpolitics Says:

I'm guessing this is the reason why the new report is being kept a secret?

  8. Another Joe Says:

Folks behind these war crimes, crimes against humanity, and treason really don't care about the number of dead or wounded.

They just count greenbacks and they are rakin' it in hands-over-fist.

  9. Another Joe Says:

Please note that the administration is going to keep the soon-to-be completed NIE on Afghanistan classified until after the election.

And the MSM will dutifully "catapult the propaganda" that this is good, very good, because we have to be "fair and balanced" before the election.

US out of Afghanistan and Iraq now.

How to fix up our good old USA: let's just turn the clock back on the last thirty years of right-wing GOP deregulation, outsourcing of our jobs, both manufacturing and technical, and return to making "Made in USA" a world-standard label. We need to return to fair trade. We need to rebuild our tariff walls so that shoes and televisions made in China cost the same amount as shoes and televisions Made in USA." Countries have been using protective tariffs for hundreds of years to protect their own vital industries. Even making shoes could be considered a vital industry, if you don't want to walk barefoot... "15 times more deadly" and, I'm afraid, just as pointless whilst this administration is still in charge.
And just as pointless if the next administration ( which will have A LOT on its plate) doesn't make the effort to thoroughly review the US and NATO presence there and what the hell it's supposed to accomplish.

(aside: Hi, Another Joe, short time no see! :)

Our pressure is working. Already this week, TrueMajority members have made almost 20,000 calls to tell their Senators "NO" to the Bush corporate bailout. Now news is beginning to come out that some lawmakers, Republicans and Democrats alike, are having second thoughts about going along with the administration's plan.

We can put the brakes on this.

Tomorrow, Thursday, September 25th at 5 pm ordinary Americans are organizing Emergency Rallies against the Bailout nationwide. Other TrueMajority members have already started 75 rallies in their towns, will you join them?

ATTEND AN EMERGENCY RALLY AGAINST THE BAILOUT

We're all in this together. The proposed bailout is a $700,000,000,000 dollar check from your bank account, handed over to Wall Street. This is literally the largest give away of public money to the private sector in history. We have an historic emergency, and it's on us to step up and lead.

If there isn't already a rally in your community, start one right now.

Once you pick a time and place we'll help turnout other TrueMajority members to your event and provide signs you can print out and a sample program. The most important thing is for you to pick a spot where you'll be seen, and start inviting other people you know right now.

Together we'll send a clear message that America Says NO to Bush Bailout!

    Thanks for leading the way,

Beginning in October, the Army plans to station an active unit inside the United States for the first time to serve as an on-call federal response in times of emergency. The paper says the Army unit may be called upon to help with civil unrest and crowd control. The soldiers are learning to use so-called nonlethal weapons designed to subdue unruly or dangerous individuals and crowds.

Come Nov. 4, McCain is the mop and Palin is the bucket. Best of all, the GOP is going to get put through the wringer!

I get the feeling Rush, Billo and Senator Glenn will be dragged kicking and screaming on air November 5...trying to get a recount in the biggest a$$ whomping we've seen in a long time.

Off-topic, but does anyone find ThinkProgress.org basically unavailable for long periods, at least during evenings and nights, on a consistent basis? I can go for several hours without access to it from my corporate desk, but it's not blocked (as some sites are -- you'll immediately get a "SITE BLOCKED" page), the site simply won't come up, while other sites are readily available. It might be extended downtime for ThinkProgress backing-up their servers at night, but it seems broader than that, going on for hours sometimes, at least for me. Thanks.

Great! Another unwise land war in Asia. When will our generals, who unlike aWol himself have studied military history, finally revolt??

  17. Bruce Kelly Says:

Isn't this a NATO war? Wasn't it supposed to be a multilateral, UN approved operation? Where's NATO?

Republic. Okay, think about what you're saying and then take another look at the headline of the thread. Does your criticism of 'turning someone elses death into a statistical issue apply to Vetvoice and Thinkprogress?

I'll assume your smarter than your moniker and that you understand how statistics are manipulated. They mean little without comparison.

Here's the stats for jobs deaths in the U.S. (I think 2007)

    http://money.cnn.com/2008/08/20/news/fewer_workers_die_on_job/index.htm

fisherman die at a rate of 111 per 100,000 (annual). Iraq soliders 7 per month per 146,000. Check my math, but I think I could say this:

Commercial fishing is nearly twice as dangerous as fighting in the War in Iraq.

All I'm asking for is the numbers from September of 2007 for comparison. To be objective. To get a more accurate assessment of the trends in Afghanistan and Iraq.

  19. backup Says:

I support Obama's position to add addition troop levels and other resources to stabilize the situation in Afghanistan and address combatants in Pakistan.
