Sen. Barack Obama (D-IL) just gave a press conference responding to Sen. John McCain’s (R-AZ) suggestion that they both suspend their campaigns, postpone Friday’s debate in Mississippi, and return to Washington to deal with the financial crisis. Obama said that he would like to the debate to go forward as planned because “it is going to be part of the president’s job to deal with more than one thing at once”:
With respect to the debates, it’s my belief that this is exactly the time when the American people need to hear from the person who, in approximately 40 days, will be responsible for dealing with this mess. And I think that it is going to be part of the president’s job to deal with more than one thing at once. I think there’s no reason why we can’t be constructive in helping to solve this problem and also tell the American people what we believe and where we stand and where we want to take the country.
Watch it:
Earlier, Matt Yglesias made a similar point: “Meanwhile, I think walking and chewing gum at the same time is part of the president’s job.”
Nice. In fact, perfect.
September 24th, 2008 at 5:04 pmPitch perfect…
September 24th, 2008 at 5:05 pmThank you Barack. Thank you for pointing out that McStain has suddenly come to agree with statements that you’ve been making all along.
We will not be fooled… again.
PEACE
September 24th, 2008 at 5:05 pmYes. Exactly.
Watch this, America, for this is what you need to know about your next leader.
Who wants to press forward, and who wants to take a nap?
September 24th, 2008 at 5:07 pmMcStain saw a window of opportunity, knowing that Obama was in the process of giving a speech, and decided to jump out in front of the cameras to make his oh so very “presidential” statement.
Or I should say, McStain’s people, whoever the fluck they are these days.
PEACE
September 24th, 2008 at 5:07 pmIsn’t McCain getting tired of looking like an idiot?
Thanks, Obama — you just smacked his stunt down, and you did it with grace and class.
September 24th, 2008 at 5:08 pmOf course the republicans will start blabbering about how Obama thinks the campaign is more important than the Wall Street meltdown.
September 24th, 2008 at 5:08 pmNext…McSame will want to postpone the election.
September 24th, 2008 at 5:09 pmPerfect response from Senator O.
September 24th, 2008 at 5:09 pmWalk and chew gum!
W00T!!!! McSame you just got pwned.
September 24th, 2008 at 5:10 pmGeorge Will was right.
September 24th, 2008 at 5:10 pmSweet. Aced that one Mr. Obama.
My own experience has shown that when the going gets tough, you work EXTRA hard, you don’t quit.
Stupid fcuking lazy Repukes always want to pass the buck.

Of course they will, but they will only show their desperation by doing so. Furthermore, they know it. But they still hold out hope there are a few people out there who will be suckered in by their spin, and this is all they have.
September 24th, 2008 at 5:13 pmperfect in every way. mccain looks panicked. obama looks engaged but calm.
September 24th, 2008 at 5:13 pm… the campaign is more important than the Wall Street meltdown.
That it is. The “crisis” is being used as a smokescreen.
September 24th, 2008 at 5:14 pmMcCain just jumped the political shark.
September 24th, 2008 at 5:15 pmWatch everything grind to a stand still while McStain attempts to show his mavericky decisive leadership.
Obama was perfect! Yes, do point out that Johnny cum Lately is a wannabe, no more.

September 24th, 2008 at 5:16 pm[Obama]: “I think there’s no reason why we can’t be constructive in helping to solve this problem and also tell the American people what we believe and where we stand and where we want to take the country.”
For you, maybe. As for McSame, he’s got a spot of difficulty seeing as his entire campaign staff has shuffled off to Washington to lobby for their favourite perqs out of that $700B hornswoggle.
Cheers,
September 24th, 2008 at 5:20 pmSNAP!
September 24th, 2008 at 5:21 pmMcStain is banking on Americans having as short a memory as he does. He thinks if he can postpone the debate for a week, the Rick Dahmer Davis/Freddie Mac scandal will die down.
He’s wrong.
And in the meantime, “Keating, party of 5, your table is ready”

September 24th, 2008 at 5:21 pmBravo, Senator Obama.
Thank you for saying what all of us were thinking.
September 24th, 2008 at 5:23 pmYour modern Conservative movement: All gimmick, all the time.
September 24th, 2008 at 5:23 pmSnagged this from my local paper’s blog.
A MUCH better idea for “righting” the economy than anything I’ve heard yet.
.
I’m against the $85,000,000,000.00 bailout of AIG.
Instead, I’m in favor of giving $85,000,000,000.00 to America in a We Deserve It Dividend.
To make the math simple, let’s assume there are 200,000.000 bonafide U.S. Citizens 18 yoa+.
Our population is about 310,000,00 +/- counting every man, woman and child. So 200,000,000 might be a fair stab at adults 18 yoa+.
So divide 200 millions adult 18+ into $85 billion and that equals $425,000.00.
My plan is to give $425,000.00 to every person 18 + as a We Deserve It Dividend.
Of course, it would NOT be tax free.
So let’s assume a tax rate of 30%.
Every individual 18 + has to pay $127,500.00 in taxes.
That sends $25,000,000,000 right back to Uncle Sam.
But it means that every adult 18+ has to $297,500.00 in their pocket.
A husband and wife have $595,000.00.
What would you do with $297,500.00 to $595,000.00 in your family?
Pay of your mortgage-housing crisis solved.
Repay college loans- what a great boost to new grad.
Put away money for college- it’ll be there.
Save in a bank- create money to loan to entrepreneurs.
Buy a new car-create new jobs.
Invest in the market- capital drives growth.
Pay for your parent’s medical insurance- health care improves.
Enable Deadbeat Dads to come clean- or else.
Remember, this for every adult U S Citizen 18+ including the folks who lost their jobs at Lehman Brothers and every other company that is cutting back. And of Course, for those serving in the Armed Forces.
If we’re going to redistribute wealth, let’s really do it. Instead of trickling out a puny $1000.00 (”vote buy”) economic incentive that is being proposed by one of our candidates for President.
If we’re going to do an $85 billion bailout, let’s bail out every adult US Citizen 18+!
As for AIG- liquidate it.
Sell off its parts.
Let American General go back to being American General.
Sell off the real estate.
Let the private sector bargain hunters cut it up and clean it up.
Here’s my rationale. We deserve it and AIG doesn’t.
Sure it’s a crazy idea that can “never work.”
But can you imagine the Coast-To-Coast Block Party!
How do you spell Economic Boom?
I trust my fellow adult Americans to know how to use the $85 billion We Deserve It Dividend more than I do the geniuses at AIG or in Washington , DC .
And remember The Birk Plan only really costs $59.5 billion because $25.5 billion is returned instantly to Uncle Sam.
Birk
T.J. Birkenmeier, A Creative Guy & Citizen of the Republic
P.S. Feel free to pass this along to your pals as it’s either good for laugh or a tear or a very sobering thought on How Best To Use $85 Billion!!
September 24th, 2008 at 5:24 pmexcellent.
very presidential.
haven’t seen that in a very, very long time.
September 24th, 2008 at 5:25 pmAwesome opportunity for Obama.
If mcthuselah doesn’t show for the debates, Obama has an open unopposed forum to talk about additional specifics of his financial plan, as well as anything else he wants to talk about–with mcthuselah’s empty podium providing mute witness to who is appearing more presidential.
September 24th, 2008 at 5:25 pmWhat a horrifically BAD decision by McCain. Oh the base will get louder for awhile but that’s not who he is trying to impress. By pulling a stunt, like he did with Palin, he opens himself up to even more criticism (missed 80% of his Senate votes, etc). Absent the base, no one will see this as statesmanship (well, except for a few terminally wrong pundis)

Simply delusional.
September 24th, 2008 at 5:30 pmI suspect another reason for McCain’s “let’s suspend the campaign and call off the debate” stunt is to give him some HELP for the debate by lowering expectations for him.
When he does poorly in the debate, his campaign will spin his performance as a result of his being busy and pre-occupied with the “economic crisis”. Of course, such a factor would affect Obama as well, but the McCainiacs are hoping their base won’t realize that.
September 24th, 2008 at 5:30 pmSenator Schumer on CNN: Well, I thought what Sen. McCain did was just weird.
LOL!
September 24th, 2008 at 5:30 pmMcCain’s folks are probably counting on delaying this debate and re-scheduling it in place of the v.p. debate.
voila!
The lovely Sarah remains mute.

September 24th, 2008 at 5:32 pmWait… if McHack needs to be DC, he should send in his #2; have Ms McMoose stand in for him at the debate against Obama… isn’t that what a VP does?
September 24th, 2008 at 5:32 pmAll the ‘experience’ in the world won’t matter if when faced with a crisis, you stand around, dither, issue contradictory statements and then ask for a timeout from your other duties so you can ‘concentrate’.
Obama is looking Presidential. McCain is looking lost.
September 24th, 2008 at 5:33 pmYesterday, scaredy-cat Palin refused to answer reporters’ questions. Today, chicken-weasel McCain is trying to wiggle out of the Friday Presidential debate with Obama. Neither of these worthless lying Republicans is qualified to serve in the White House. Neither one of these GOP clowns is qualified to run a pit bull dog kennel…
The Friday televised Presidential debate should go on as scheduled. If McCain doesn’t show up, well, that is his choice… Just put a big sign in his chair, saying AWOL. When McCain’s sixty second answer times come, people can just humm so old POW songs from the Vietnam era. Or they could play Country Joe and the Fish’s Fixing to Die Rag…

without pointing fingers, he let it be known it was a swindle…

September 24th, 2008 at 5:40 pmThe debates are moving forward, according to both Obama and the debate committee.

Sorry, J. Sidney, we’re not buying it.

Well, I made that suggestion as a joke in the other debate postponement thread — only as a way to get the Palin camp to put up or shut up about how “qualified” their candidate is.
But then I went over to redstate to see what the other side was saying about McCain’s stunt, and darned if they hadn’t already gotten ahold of that idea. But they seriously think it’s a WONDERFUL idea — they are fully convinced that Palin would clean Obama’s clock, and that the stunt would show McCain’s regard for Obama’s experience and debating skills.
It reminded me why I don’t go there very often.
September 24th, 2008 at 5:43 pmObama should just run ads between now and Friday highlighting the things that the Republicans did to get us into this mess.
He should just target the Republican party and not even mention McCain’s name in ads until McCain decides/is told to restart his campaign.
September 24th, 2008 at 5:45 pmThe only problem is running a presidential campaign does nothing for America. Fixing the finical system does! Not in the ballpark of a valid argument. Try again! Obama is a 360 degree Empty Suit!

September 24th, 2008 at 5:52 pmfor the record, I wrote this before I was aware of this thread:
Briseadh na Faire Says:
Perhaps Obama should continue campaigning and keep tabs on developments in the Senate.
In other words, assure the American People that he’s keeping abreast of the discussions regarding the “bailout” and is providing input as to the sort of change he would like to see implemented.
If Obama stays on top of the latest developments while campaigning, it will demonstrate the there is no need for a leader to drop everything everytime Wall Street cries “wolf!”
Let’s face it, the next President is going to step into having to deal with several crises on day one.

September 24th, 2008 at 5:56 pmGee, quit everything you’re doing to address one crisis? What would McCain do if he had two crises happen at the same time? Like a war on two fronts? Call a time-out? How about you do both – cast your vote in the senate and continue with the debate?

And if McCain’s course of action is the proper one why is he waiting until tomorrow afternoon to put it in action? I think McNumbNuts’s campaign manager is negotiating this very detail right now. He would like the sign to read:
AWOL (but I used to be a POW, my friends)
McNumbNuts got totally outflanked on his little political stunt today. For someone who has touted his foreign relations and military expertise, he showed today that he isn’t very good at either gamesmanship or tactical manuveurs.
On the other hand, he may be minimally qualified to serve as the assistant director of FEMA in the Obama administration. He does seem to have some skill for creating a crisis and then responding to it.

September 24th, 2008 at 6:24 pmActually, Obama is wrong. The new president won’t be responsible for taking care of this mess in 40 days. He won’t become President until January.
This is a really weird transition. Normally the time between November 5 and the day the President takes the oath of office is benign. There usually isn’t much going on. But this time there are a lot of very critical things going on. What is Obama going to do when he is elected if he sees Bush doing something that he doesn’t approve of. And what is he going to do with Congress during that twilight zone time?

September 24th, 2008 at 6:35 pmPerfect – absolutely perfect. I wondered how Barack would respond to this – and he hit it out of the park! Maybe, just maybe, we are going to get a president who actually has a brain. I have a tee-shirt that says “I want my president to be smarter than I am”. That president’s name is Barack Obama – YES !!!
September 24th, 2008 at 6:36 pmKaty,
Here is the story about Letterman. I got it from the Drudge Report:
EXCLUSIVE: LETTERMAN MOCKS MCCAIN CANCELLATION
Wed Sep 24 2008 17:41:58 ET
David Letterman tells audience that McCain called him today to tell him he had to rush back to DC to deal with the economy.
Then in the middle of the taping Dave got word that McCain was, in fact just down the street being interviewed by Katie Couric. Dave even cut over to the live video of the interview, and said, “Hey Senator, can I give you a ride home?”
Earlier in the show, Dave kept saying, “You don’t suspend your campaign. This doesn’t smell right. This isn’t the way a tested hero behaves.” And he joked: “I think someone’s putting something in his metamucil.”
“He can’t run the campaign because the economy is cratering? Fine, put in your second string quarterback, Sara Palin. Where is she?”
“What are you going to do if you’re elected and things get tough? Suspend being president? We’ve got a guy like that now!”
Developing…
September 24th, 2008 at 6:37 pmmary, thank you :-)
but you shouldn’t talk to gnats… someone might wonder about you…
September 24th, 2008 at 6:37 pmSo Obama just backhanded the ball to McIIIrd. Either he’s capable of multi-tasking, or he’s just too damn:
a. tired
b. stupid
c. mishandled by staff and wife
d. any or all of the above.
September 24th, 2008 at 6:38 pmkaty – is that why I feel itchy all of the sudden?
September 24th, 2008 at 6:38 pmRaptureReady Says:
Anyway, who cares. Hussein is a hypocrite. Hussein and Joe voted for the bridge to no where, http://www.cnn.com/ 2008/ POLITICS/ 09/ 23/ biden.earmarks/ index.html.
This is the latest talking point of the right. Obama and Biden voted for a transportation bill that this bridge was in. Along with about 85 other transportation related earmarks. So, they voted for this bill ergo they supported the Bridge to Nowhere.
The entire Republican party needs to take a course in critical thinking at their local JC. It would do them a world of good.
September 24th, 2008 at 6:39 pmRaptureRetard took his daily crap on the site…the voice in your head lied, Phuckabee is not going to be pres.
them_libs did his daily gramar error….their…not there.
It was a bad week for McGonnaDieSoon, he is wishing the public forgets this week by pulling this obvious stunt.

PHIL 115 Critical Reasoning • 5 CR
September 24th, 2008 at 6:47 pmFulfills quantitative or symbolic reasoning course requirement at BCC.
I just went back to CNN and watched half of McCan’ts speech (that’s all I could stand for), and all I can say is okay let’s cancel the debate on Friday and hold the election instead. Please, get this man outta my face!
September 24th, 2008 at 6:53 pmWhen McCan’t brought up 9/11 in his decision to suspend his campaign now, in the wake of the crashing economy, that’s when I shut it off. He wants another leadership panel to study and solve this problem before the election. another damn commission!! Gawd!?!
September 24th, 2008 at 6:57 pmBadmoodman Says:
McCain just jumped the political shark.
Again
What is wrong with people who refused to see mcchimpy as a sad state of affairs?
September 24th, 2008 at 7:00 pmthem_libs Says:

September 24th, 2008 at 7:09 pmKaty,
My pleasure!
When I first read it, I thought it was a joke or would be edited out, but I guess it goes on and I bet David’s ratings go through the roof tonight!
I guess Johnny Boy has very few ’safe havens’ anymore.
Heh Heh
September 24th, 2008 at 7:14 pmKaty, darlin’ I hate to break it to you, but our whole evening line-up will be interupted by Chimpy McFlightsuit attempting to string together some English. If he’s been sobered up enough for prime time, that is.
Waste of time and going to totally screw with my DVR settings!
PEACE

Wait… if McHack needs to be DC, he should send in his #2; have Ms McMoose stand in for him at the debate against Obama… isn’t that what a VP does?
Well, what veeps traditionally do is go to funerals … ummm … yeah, right, that may be exactly what this is. Nevermind. Carry on. ;-)
Cheers,
September 24th, 2008 at 7:53 pmI watched Katy Couric’s Interview of Gov. Palin on the CBS Evening News tonite.
I Agree. Gov. Palin did NOT look good without a script.
September 24th, 2008 at 7:55 pmOh my god, this woman is DUMB! I wouldn’t want her teaching my kids, being near my kids, having her as a roll model, as a neighbor, a librarian – anything! How on earth did the good people of Alaska elect such a moron?
September 24th, 2008 at 8:17 pmBetter take McCain up on his offer Barry O. He will kick the crap our of you in a debate because you do not get to bring a teleprompter.
Take the offer Barry O. and you will have more time to memorize the media matters talking points.

You have lost your mind Timmeh moron. You are projecting YOUR stupidity and that of YOUR candidate onto the Dem slate. Lets see. Obama, editor of Harvard Law Review. McImbecile 894th out of 899 at the Naval Academy. What color is the sky on Planet Wingnut anyway?
September 24th, 2008 at 9:36 pmThat joint statement is truly meaty, just chock full of details.
September 24th, 2008 at 9:51 pmthose last 5 being the most important… so far…
September 24th, 2008 at 10:07 pm> The truth lays somewhere in the middle
> of the whole political muck!
Not even close. Your side asserts some grossly distored vision of presidential power, such as the assertion that the president can sexually torture children with impunity, and then claim “the truth im somewhere in the middle”
note even close. your peopels theories about government are so out of whack, they are criminal…not even something that civilized society could except..
do YOU think the president should have the right to sexually torture children without consequences? yes or no?
