McCain Flacks Appear On Five Six Cable Shows Within Hours Of Campaign’s ‘Suspension’

Yesterday, Sen. John McCain announced he would be suspending his campaign after speaking at the Clinton Global Initiative in order to return to Washington for negotiations on the bailout:

Tomorrow morning, I will suspend my campaign and return to Washington after speaking at the Clinton Global Initiative. … All we must do to achieve this is temporarily set politics aside, and I am committed to doing so.

The McCain campaign, however, has not “temporarily set politics aside.” In the five hours after McCain’s speech, aides Nancy Pfotenhauer, Tucker Bounds, and Mike Duhaime appeared on Fox News and MSNBC five times, frequently criticizing Obama and Democrats:

– PFOTENHAUER: Well they could always have Joe Biden and if it’s on foreign policy, Obama and Biden can debate each other! Hahaha! [MSNBC]

– BOUNDS: Democrats were trying to pivot and push this issue into John McCain’s lap. [Fox News]

– BOUNDS: Barack Obama is trying to play politics, I think, in many regards on a lot of these issues. [MSNBC]

– BOUNDS: And here we are. I think we’re in a very different situation because of the leadership of John McCain. [MSNBC]

On Fox News, McCain political director Mike Duhaime said McCain “decided to put campaigning and politics aside.” Watch a compilation:

In none of the five appearances, however, did any media anchor ask the aides about the double standard.

Pfotenhauer also was scheduled for a live chat at the Washington Times at 11 a.m., well after McCain’s CGI speech. Greg Sargent writes, “McCain’s suspension of his campaign apparently doesn’t apply to his own advisers.”

Update Politico reports that according to the Chicago Tribune's Jill Zuckman, McCain campaign aides Rick Davis and Douglas Holtz-Eakin are meeting with McCain in his Senate office:
Sen. McCain left his lunch in the Capitol at 1:50 pm and returned to his Russell Senate office with Sen. Lieberman and Rick Davis. ... As I type, Sen. Graham and Doug Holtz-Eakin have entered the Senate office.
Update Senior campaign adviser Mark Salter was also in McCain's Senate office today.
Update Pfotenhauer appeared on MSNBC again at around 4:40 p.m.

It’s not going to matter, they have now resolved it to the point where Grampy isn’t needed there and he will have no more excuses

  2. Art says:

“So if Senator McCain has suspended his campaign to set politics aside while he works in Washington, then what are you doing here?”

That should be the very first question.

  3. raynman says:

Well, we have to remember, that McCain doesn’t actually speak for the McCain Campaign….

  4. DallasNE says:

Well, that is understandable. Take a look at how India viewed Sarah Palin’s talk with the Indian PM.

    http://in.news.yahoo.com/139/20080925/888/twl-palin-leaves-manmohan-singh-speechle.html

    Anything to distract from that!

  5. Badmoodman says:

    – BOUNDS: Barack Obama is trying to play politics

    – - Fer crissakes, it’s 40 days from a presidential election. EVERYTHING both candidates do is political. Geezus.

  6. DidHeJustSayThat says:

Look, John McCain offered Barack Obama the opportunity to “suspend” his campaign too!

If Obama would have accepted, I think we’d be seeing an entirely different mode of campaigning from McCain. John McCain would have really “suspended” his campaign, just like he promised the American people!

It is all Obama’s fault for never putting the American people first like the FORMER POW John McCain always does!

  7. Badmoodman says:

Tell me Palin isn’t an escapee from a Christopher Guest film. Gawd, this surreal:

  8. margerine says:

They’ve been correcting him all of the time anyway, they might as well just speak for him entirely. I wouldn’t be surprised if McCain keeps under the radar aside from the debates he bothers to show up for.

Either way, it’s weird to me that politicians can be made fun of for “playing” politics over a national and political issue. Apparently in this case the only way to not be “playing” politics is to do exactly what McCain’s camp wants.

  9. Zooey says:

    Suspended campaign — my ass!

  10. raynman says:

    Badmoodman Says:

That’s the analogy that I was looking for. I was thinking of Monty Python, but you’re right, this is like the 5th in his series: Waiting for Guffman, Best in Show, A Mighty Wind, For Your Consideration, and Running For Office.

With Parker Posey as Sarah Palin….

  11. 666lattes says:

    Ssssshhh… I have a secret:

“Suspending the campaign”… is part of the campaign.

  12. Mark @ News Corpse says:

    That’s not all:

-McCain is still scheduled to attend a Beverly Hills fundraiser Wednesday.
-McCain TV ads are still running.

And Palin attended “a swanky charity gala” Wednesday night with her pal Rupert Murdoch.

  13. stateofthedivision says:

McCain led nothing on the financial crisis, which exploded last Thursday. Show me in his schedule what leadership McCain provided?

He’s five steps behind and flat footed. Now he gets to ride into Washington and act like the bi-partisan meeting was all his idea. Sorry John, those efforts were already a week old and would terminate in a joint meeting, whether you picked up the phone or not.

  14. Max-1 says:

    .

If Johnny McSuspended his campaign during a crisis…
… Does this mean he’ll suspend being president should there be a crisis, too?

    .

  15. Bilbo Hussein Baggins says:

It’s just another one of McCain’s “word games” he likes to play. “He” is suspending his campaign. He didn’t say that his “surrogates” would be suspending their campaign. But the advertisements on TV are a problem because he said yesterday his staff was canceling them.

Barney Frank says that they are close to a bi-partisan deal. Boner says they aren’t. I’m betting that Boner and crowd are going to hold off as long as possible trying to give McCain cover. Then they will agree and credit McCain for their agreeing and they will say it’s only because McCain sacrificed that the bi-partisan agreement was reached.

The voters know it’s a pile of dog doo, though.

  16. margerine says:

I don’t even really get it. He’s not going to be able to change this single handed. They want to make it seem like he’s a hero who put aside the evil of politics to save all of us. Even though he clearly has no idea what’s going on (comments since then certainly back that up) and many already see him as being in the way.

Let’s not pretend that the meeting with Bush is anything more than a photo op.

Absolutely nothing about what McCain is doing here is not playing politics. It’s completely rooted in it. All he’s trying to suspend is the debate. I’ll be surprised if the ads are off TV by the end of this week. Certainly his goonsquad hasn’t let up.

I think this honestly makes me more sick to my stomach than anything this man has done so far.

WTF, Barney Frank is 99% responsible for the financial meltdown of our economy.

You really do need to change whatever it is you are smoking. It’s doing seriously bad things to your brain.

  19. 666lattes says:

    … And not run away.

    Johnny B. Goode!

Deep down in Arizona close to Mexico
Way back up in the cactuses where it never snows
There stood an ancient mansion made of gold and wood
Where lived a a corrupt politician named Johnny B Goode
Who’d never learned the difference between Sunni or Shia so well
But he could pretend to chase Osama to the gates of Hell

    Go! Go! Go! Johnny!
    Go! Go! Go! Johnny!
    Go! Go! Go! Johnny!
    Go! Go! Go! Johnny!
    Go! Go! Johnny B. Goode!

He used to carry his bribe money in a gunnysack
Go sit beneath a tree and count his Keating kickbacks
Old lobbyist on K street would see him sittin’ in the shade
Laughing at the doubletalk and flip flops he made
The people passed him by they would stop and say
Oh my but that little old mummy really hates the gays

    Go! Go! Go! Johnny!
    Go! Go! Go! Johnny!
    Go! Go! Go! Johnny!
    Go! Go! Go! Johnny!
    Go! Go! Johnny B. Goode!

Once upon time the state of Arizona couldn’t host a superbowl
Because it was legislated by a group of white supremacist trolls
The bigots were led by an angry fascist who was a goose-stepping man
A millionaire, senator who belonged to the Klu Klux Klan
Johnny B Goode was a maverick when it came to recognizing MLK
So the old cracker donned his klan robe and voted against a holiday

    Go! Go! Go! Johnny!
    Go! Go! Go! Johnny!
    Go! Go! Go! Johnny!
    Go! Go! Go! Johnny!
    Go! Go! Johnny B. Goode!

His mother told him someday you will be an old man
And you will be the leader of a murderous criminal clan
Many people will be blown to bits from miles around
To see you launch the nukes and take us all down
Maybe some day you will make mushroom clouds so bright
Sayin’ “Johnny B Goode pushed the button tonight”

    Go! Go! Go! Johnny!
    Go! Go! Go! Johnny!
    Go! Go! Go! Johnny!
    Go! Go! Go! Johnny!
    Go! Go! Johnny B. Goode!

No, but when his girlfriend asked who she should vote for (between Clinton and Obama) in the Primaries, he said that she should vote for Obama because he would sell more papers…

Officials from Ole Miss told ABC News today that a cancellation would be “devastating” to the University — and that a postponement might not be possible:

Andrew Mullins, special assistant to University Chancellor Robert Khayat, told ABC News that the Ole Miss campus has been transformed to accommodate the candidates and the press. Road blocks are in place on campus and in the community and the debate television set for the candidates has already been constructed. He said the university has spent roughly five and half million dollars getting ready for the debate.
