House GOP Aides: McCain ‘Not Familiar With The Details’ Of The Financial Bailout

Bailout negotiations “dissolved into a verbal brawl” at the White House yesterday, as some House Republicans, led by Eric Cantor (R-VA), said they wouldn’t back a bipartisan negotiation on the package. The House GOP faction stunned the participants at the meeting yesterday by announcing their own plan which “advocates tax cuts and relaxed regulations.”

Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson has said the House GOP proposal would not work. “Democratic leaders questioned McCain’s involvement in the House Republicans’ opposition to the plan.” McCain met with House GOP leaders before heading to the White House, but neither party seemed to know what they were talking about:

Boehner and McCain discussed the bailout plan, but Republican leadership aides described the conversation as somewhat surreal. Neither man was familiar with the details of the proposal being pressed by House conservatives, and up to the moment they departed for the White House yesterday afternoon, neither had seen any description beyond news reports.

At 1:25 p.m., McCain left Boehner’s office through a back door, walking across the Capitol’s rotunda to the applause of tourists. Graham conceded the group knew little about the plan the nominee had come to Washington to try to shape.

At the bipartisan White House meeting that McCain “didn’t speak until 43 minutes into the meeting.” He “sat silently for more than 40 minutes, more observer than leader, and then offered only a vague sense of where he stood, said people in the meeting.”

Sen. Chris Dodd said, “Instead of being a rescue plan for our economy it was a rescue plan for John McCain.” Sen. Chuck Schumer urged Bush to “respectfully tell Sen. McCain to get out of town. He’s not helping.” Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid added, “We had [Republican] Senator [Bob] Bennett, a high ranking official, who said these are the principles. And then, guess who came to town? And it all fell apart.”

McCain’s handling of the negotiations serves to underscore his comment in Dec. 2007 that he is “not an expert on Wall Street” and “not an expert of some of this stuff”:

McCain still won’t say what his position is on the bailout. As Fox’s Carl Cameron reported, McCain has “studiously not taken a position.”

And I hope that Obama brings it up and eats him alive on tv. You can bet Obama was paying attention and has the wherewithal to remember what was said and done. Bet Grampy was nodding off in the corner again.

Tonight is going to be a blood bath!

McStain has been all over the place, both literally and figuratively, in the past week. He thought he could scuttle the debate so he hasn't been practicing, and he won't have time to practice and get his nap in before tonight.

Obama will show true leadership tonight, a man of thoughtful consideration with not only ideas, but plans for implementation, too, while McStain will spin and bob and weave and look like the unstable fool he truly is.

    Can't wait!

    PEACE

I had no need for a car back then, much less the dozen or so I have today. Nor did I have any furniture, but I spent a lot of time tied up."

  9. DidHeJustSayThat Says:

Studiously not taken a position? That is leadership we can believe in. What was the purpose of this stunt, other than to distract the country from the election?

The campaign will shortly blast Obama for not taking a position.

Are you suggesting any amount of time could prepare this man for the type of conversations and responses necessary from a president?

Good/Evil - Win/Lose - Victory/Defeat - this rhetoric is so tired, because it doesn't accomplish anything. The people know who is responsible for situation America has found herself in. Will they act?

If I were a conservative republican, I would be very upset. Throughout the drama of the democratic primary I didn't pay much attention to what was going on on the otherside. I knew they didn't have much to start with, but OMG.

How could they seriously present America with such a choice?

McCain only sees that it's important to swoop in very conspicuously like Mighty Mouse to save the day, not to know any details of the bailout package. Stunts, publicity, and polling numbers are far more important than substance.

  39. texaslady Says:

Mccain's weird message before he left "in a rush" about no one should base their election vote on the way he would vote on this Bill was the most confusing speech I have ever heard from him. Guess it mean't vote for me even tho I want to bail out WallStreet. Either he has lost it or he has the worse advisors ever.

  40. nickrhoward Says:

Judging from the Republicans I know there is virtually nothing McCain could do to cause him to lose any support. Yes, they really are that brainwashed. We can hope for better from the independents but I'm not that hopeful-remember these are the people who, by and large, don't think there's any difference between the Democratic Party and the Republican Party. I'm thinking the state of the race is right where it will stay no matter what happens. No wait, that's wrong; Obama can lose support if the media continues to carry water for him by pretending that he suspended his campaign and begins to pretend that McCain was the only guy looking out for the people with regard to the bailout. It would be a mistake to think that the media will stop trying to help McCain just because he's treating them with so much contempt and insults.

  41. texaslady Says:

Nick - It is all about Obama is going to raise my taxes for repubs that I know. They care nothing about more war, more economy woes, just how it affects them. Does totally selfish come to mind anyone ?

  42. Roket Says:

“Studiously not taken a position” is such a 20th Century thing to say. In the 21st Century we say “The obstructionist doesn’t have an f’ing clue”.

When you ask a Republican what year it is, how long does it take them to answer??

  43. tarazan Says:

It is obvious that McCain trip to Washington was a show and a hollow one, because he sat in the White House without proposing or suggesting anything.
Now he is coming back to debate Obama tonight, after claiming that he suspended his campaign, without adding anything to the issue over the current crisis in Wall Street.
So, why did McCain go to Washington D.C. to begin with?!
Tonight we will find out,if we can, why did he go to Washington.
I don't have much faith in what McCain has to say tonight if he thinks that earmarks is the cause of this financial problem we are in now.
The total earmarks is no more than 8 billion dollars, and it is not in anyway related to what we are witnessing today in the credit, housing and banking markets.

  44. A Patriot Acting Says:

I guess McSenile is holding out on his masterplan for dramatic effect:

"My experience on the Senate Commerce Committee means that I know how to fix this economy." -John Sydney McCain
"I understand the economy. I was chairman of the Commerce Committee that oversights every part of our economy," -John Sydney McCain

    It's pretty simple, really:

Say you support regulation/oversight/stripping of golden parachutes = piss off the base (votes lost)

    or

Say you support less regulation and more tax cuts for corporations = piss off Independents/undecideds (votes lost)

Looks like which ever way Johnny swings he stands to lose votes and gain none

  45. misshusseinmolly Says:

The House GOP faction stunned the participants at the meeting yesterday by announcing their own plan which “advocates tax cuts and relaxed regulations.”
    ____________________________________________________________

Lemme guess -- these "tax cuts" would only benefit the rich; that is, the people who have already benefitted from the policies that have caused this meltdown in the first place?

    How very Republican of them.

  46. nickrhoward Says:

texaslady, I kind of wish it were only selfishness because most of these folks vote against their own economic interests all the time. And many that I know that vote only Republican(I know some that won't vote in primaries because they won't vote against any Republican) aren't selfish people. They're the kind of people that, if they run upon a stranded motorist, would either fix the car for the motorist or take them to get help and refuse all payment. Assuming the motorist wasn't a minority or somehow else easily identified as a Democrat. Their disdain for the minorities is small compared to their hatred of Democrats and devotion to the GOP. How else can one explain how, this year after incredible misrule by Republicans, by percentage more Republicans say they will vote Republican than Democrats say they will vote for Democrats?

    _____________________________________________________________

It's true that Johnny isn't going to gain any votes no matter how he polishes this turd. But he won't lose too many, either. He's already down to the people who will always vote for the Republican over the Democrat, even if the GOP ran a three-toed sloth as a candidate.

What he needs to worry about is how many people have registered to vote this year just so they can vote for Obama. AND those people aren't being reflected in the polls.

A combination of being brainwashed and being stupid will do that to a person. I remember a conversation with a hard-core Bush supporter during the 2004 campaign who was going on and on about Bush and dissing Kerry. So I asked her why she supported Bush, what had he done for HER? The look on her face was priceless. She literally said, "well, you know, I've never really thought about that."

  50. Goldstandard Says:

The stench coming out of Washington is not to be believed and here is just one of a million credible reasons as to why this bail out for the rich and infamous should not take place under duress and time constraints.
First, the media incorrectly is labeling WaMu as a sub prime lender which is not true. WaMu was the Alt-A monster and those loans are worse then subprime because of the high LTV, no documetation features, and high loan amounts. Citi and Indy Mac were also big in Alt-A.
What is really interesting is that the Federal Reserve protection seeking JP Morgan found all the necessary liquidity to buy even more troubled WaMu. How is that for bail out? I thought they all had trouble with liquidity.... that is until they see a deal...
Add to the above fact that JP Morgan coughed up 138 billion 2 hours before Leahman Brothers had their bankruptcy filing time stamped by the court. The American people should be demanding that NO DEAL be signed off on until we the people know exactly how much money the remaining banks have on hand after a full and complete audit by the Comptroller of the Currency which is further verified by an independent accounting firm.

Again I ask, what is the bloody rush to get this completed by this weekend before the markets open? did we not hear the same cry last weekend? We're still here aren't we?
Well, I can answer that question. At 12:00 midnight Tuesday the 30th, the fiscal year ends and if the funds are not in place to cover the Federal Reserve and other entities, the Federal Reserve will no longer exist because as of this moment, they are bankrupt. But then miracles of miracles big daddy JP Morgan keeps coughing up billions for buyouts?
The American tax payer rightly demands answers before one thin dime of our current tax dollars and those well into the next century are paid. If that means that the Federal Reserve no longer exist that's fine with plenty of us because the only thing this private banking cartel has done in its nearly 100 year existence has been to act like a parasite sucking the life blood out of us and in turn our once great country.
Keep writing, faxing, calling or any other method used to communicate with your Senators and Representatives, but at all cost, keep the pressure up and never give up. If our founders had, we probably would be ruled today by a King. The present occupant of the White House might think he is, but I have a funny feeling we the people aren't ready for that nonsense.
Keep writing and calling. Make it clear that those who vote for this massive bailout on our backs will not have to worry about returning to their government jobs next year. Enough is enough.

Under the proposed bailout legislation (according to Henry Paulson, Secretary of the Treasury), the US Treasury or agents thereof could acquire Microsoft for one US dollar, with no legal recourse for Microsoft or even its shareholders.

Here is the text of proposed legislation and here is what the Treasury Department claims the legislation will allow it to do, and here is how Paulson (or his successor) could own Microsoft...for a buck...

The entire world wishes Bush death. So much hatred contained in everyone's hearts and minds. I can't wait to see this idiot pay for all his crimes. Any member of the Bush family should be banned from setting foot in the White House ever again!

  54. SplendidMarbles Says:

McCain would not even know where to purchase a clue as to what can be done to solve the financial disaster that is brewing and stewing on Wall Street. He is actually the one who is completely out of touch with the concerns of the average voter. He is the elitist, living a sheltered life in seven homes; wining and dining with those with the dough to affect how we all live.
