The Democratic leadership in the House “effectively shelved” a proposed non-binding resolution that “critics say would amount to a naval blockade of Iran because of concerns that it could provoke another war, officials on Capitol Hill said.” The Washington Times reports:
Even though the document would not be a law but a “statement of policy” aimed at preventing Tehran from obtaining a nuclear weapon, the Democratic leadership is worried that it could be viewed by the Bush administration as a green light to use military force against Iran, officials said. [...]
The draft “demands that the president initiate an international effort” that would impose “stringent inspection requirements on all persons, vehicles, ships, planes, trains and cargo entering or departing Iran.”
Thank You! This bunch of greedy war mongers needs no prompting to send other peoples kids to war.
September 26th, 2008 at 12:54 pmThis administration redefines, ‘Give an inch take a mile’.
Someone needed to firmly slap them down on this.
September 26th, 2008 at 12:55 pmdamn. looks like the dems have finally gotten a clue…
September 26th, 2008 at 12:57 pmThat’s a relief. It was one frightening piece of legislation.
September 26th, 2008 at 12:58 pmCue up pre-taped TrollBlather™ sound bites:
3… 2… 1…
“Why do Dems hate America?”… blah-blah-blah…
“Dems Coddle Terraists! Again!!!”… blah-blah-blah…
“Cowardly Dems Try to Appease Radical Islamics!!!” … blah-blah-blah…
And the best for last:
“This just proves Obama is a Secret Muslim!!!”
Blah-blah-blah… BLAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH…
September 26th, 2008 at 12:58 pmWhat is it with these people? The Bush doctrine has gone far enough if destabilizing the region? F*** It, just F*** the whole thing up!
September 26th, 2008 at 12:59 pmThat’s all we need now, a third war hot on the heels of Busch having bankrupted the country.

September 26th, 2008 at 1:00 pmWow ! Containment, good judgement in dealing with hot buttons, where is this coming from ?
September 26th, 2008 at 1:03 pmOr we could use the palin/mccain method of bomb, bomb,bomb, whoever we want to.
uh-oh . . . I smell another “campaign suspension” in the wind.
September 26th, 2008 at 1:03 pmAnd who wants this resolution passed? AIPAC. Bush would not back Israel’s desire to bomb (was he strangely lucid or too drunk?), so they tried this. Seems that this American gubbernmint ain’t quite as controllable as some might have thunk.
September 26th, 2008 at 1:06 pmIt`s about time the dems got some BRASS.Now let`s bailout America from the bottom up with rebuilding our schools, bridges and get going on being green, phuck the re-pukes and Wall street and especially Phil Grahm and deregulation.
September 26th, 2008 at 1:07 pmYou are all aware that the Dems penned these non binding resolutions? Not that they didn’t get some Repubs to eagerly sign on. I have some serious doubts about the judgement of the Dems that put these bills together in the first place.
September 26th, 2008 at 1:09 pmNow if they would only shelve the seven hundred billion dollar bailout for Wallstreet. Better yet they could give the seven hundred billion dollars to we the people instead!
September 26th, 2008 at 1:10 pmbush has us in such a bind in so many ways that we couldn’t even defend ourselves at this point, let along fight another agressive war against boogy men.
September 26th, 2008 at 1:11 pmDon’t worry about us going to war with Iran anytime soon, Pakistan will be our next biggest threat and they already have nukes.
September 26th, 2008 at 1:11 pmonoclea Says:
It was designed to keep bush from going to war without taking unilateral steps first……it has been decided that bush might use it as an excuse……
September 26th, 2008 at 1:12 pmThe “wind in the sails” of politicians comes from the constituents and the lobbiests (sp?). Don’t just send in complaints — let them know that you agree when they do right so that they know they have the support of voters. It CAN help shape their policy decisions, so when it is for the better it is better for us all. Well done (for once)! Let them know!
September 26th, 2008 at 1:13 pmPray tell, is this the beginning of the end for the Neo-Con era of power? Liberté!!!

September 26th, 2008 at 1:14 pm““““““““““““““““““““““““““
Yup but still the idiots on the reich just don’t seem to understand this fact and will vote to continue this maddness!
nonbinding or binding resolution does not matter one whit to Bushitler/Cheney.
September 26th, 2008 at 1:14 pm@ #50 I obviously meant mulitlateral
September 26th, 2008 at 1:16 pmWell Fred, it outlined a naval blockade on Iran, which in my opinion is not a proper approach to de-escalate the situation. How does blockading Iran keep Bush from going to war? In fact from the get-go it looked blatantly like giving Bush the tools to go to war.
September 26th, 2008 at 1:19 pmDid I just hear the sound of testicles dropping?
September 26th, 2008 at 1:22 pmBy who…..just the US…..not what I got from it. Dealing with Iran will require the rest of the worlds participation and that was the whole point I believe.
September 26th, 2008 at 1:22 pmRead for yourself. Personally, I was very concerned that Dems would compose this resolution for itchy finger Bush.
Res 362
September 26th, 2008 at 1:30 pmResolved by the House of Representatives (the Senate concurring), That Congress–
(1) declares that preventing Iran from acquiring a nuclear weapons capability, through all appropriate economic, political, and diplomatic means, is vital to the national security interests of the United States and must be dealt with urgently;
(2) urges the President, in the strongest of terms, to immediately use his existing authority to impose sanctions on–
(A) the Central Bank of Iran and any other Iranian bank engaged in proliferation activities or the support of terrorist groups;
(B) international banks which continue to conduct financial transactions with proscribed Iranian banks;
(C) energy companies that have invested $20,000,000 or more in the Iranian petroleum or natural gas sector in any given year since the enactment of the Iran Sanctions Act of 1996; and
(D) all companies which continue to do business with Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps;
(3) demands that the President initiate an international effort to immediately and dramatically increase the economic, political, and diplomatic pressure on Iran to verifiably suspend its nuclear enrichment activities by, inter alia, prohibiting the export to Iran of all refined petroleum products; imposing stringent inspection requirements on all persons, vehicles, ships, planes, trains, and cargo entering or departing Iran; and prohibiting the international movement of all Iranian officials not involved in negotiating the suspension of Iran’s nuclear program; and
(4) urges the President to lead a sustained, serious, and forceful effort at regional diplomacy to support the legitimate governments in the region against Iranian efforts to destabilize them, to reassure our friends and allies that the United States supports them in their resistance to Iranian efforts at hegemony, and to make clear to the Government of Iran that the United States will protect America’s vital national security interests in the Middle East.

This is true. AIPAC lobbied hard for this resolution, and it was introduced by the Democrats. It’s way past time to stop automatically to continue supporting Israel, NO MATTER WHAT, by both sides of the aisle. The U.S. is, indeed, Israel’s strongest ally, but that has not been the reversed situation. What the hay has Israel done for the U.S.? How many troops or dollars did they send for either Afghanistan or Iraq, for instance? How long does the U.S. have to pay off their guilt for not having intervened in the Holocaust…when the government KNEW what was going on? But explain to me why not dealing with that Holocaust is really any different than Rwanda or now, Dafur? Just because the ancient scriptures were written by the very people who declared themselves the “Chosen,” the land of Palestine the “promised land?”
September 26th, 2008 at 1:34 pmYep, it’s calling for using every multilateral tool at his disposal….where do you read that it says that America should do anything alone?
September 26th, 2008 at 1:37 pmLet’s see — if Iran decided it was in their best interests to halt and inspect all ships and cargo entering the United States, how would we react? How about if they wanted to inspect planes, trains, and other vehicles? My guess is that we wouldn’t be pleased about it, and we’d react accordingly.
This would indeed amount to a blockade, a step which shouldn’t even be considered unless and until we are ready to declare war. And if we’re the aggressor, we shouldn’t count on the sympathy of the rest of the world.
September 26th, 2008 at 1:40 pmcomon guys, don’t try to make it read the way you want it to.
I despise our relationship with Israel too but this is not about that…..
Be careful or the trolls will be saying we are anti-semite for criticizing Israel…….I’m not anti-Jew. They are Arabs too. I am strongly against the things Israel has been doing for many years now.
September 26th, 2008 at 1:40 pm(D) all companies which continue to do business with Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps;
_______
Do political parties count as “companies?” Cause in that case we’d have to stop supporting the Da’wa party in Iraq.
September 26th, 2008 at 1:42 pmIt doesn’t call on any other nation. It is stating what it urges the president of the US to do.
September 26th, 2008 at 1:45 pmOk dude, you win…..obviously you read into it what you want to see.
September 26th, 2008 at 1:49 pmI win??? How the heck else to you interpret these words?
(2) urges the President, in the strongest of terms, to immediately use his existing authority to impose sanctions on–

_________
They bombed the shit out of Lebanon and tested the radar defenses in Syria for us – does that count for anything?
I’d counter that the U.S.-Israel relationship is much more client-patron than you think. We give them arms and money, and they give us security technology, intelligence, and conflict-on-demand whenever we need it. At the same time, Israel has also deregulated their economy from a socialist state to a Friedmanesque free-market paradise.
September 26th, 2008 at 1:54 pmonoclea Says:
The president is the one who is supposed to work with other countries…..Our congress does not sign or hammer out these sanctions….they ratify them.
As I said, the language of your post clearly indicates the need and urges at every opportunity that other countries be involved in the efforts against Iran. That’s how it works.
September 26th, 2008 at 1:58 pmOne last comment Fred. Maybe working with other countries is the way it should work but that is not necessarily the way Bush works. So halleluhah (sic), they shelved it.
September 26th, 2008 at 2:11 pmonoclea Says:
Peace my friend, I believe we are basically on the same page.
Hoping for all of our sakes that this all works out peacefully.

September 26th, 2008 at 2:33 pm.
Can we shelve Nancy Pelosi too?
.
September 26th, 2008 at 2:42 pmOMG, have they finally learned to not trust this lying, thieving, war criminal, POS, Worst President in History at last?
September 26th, 2008 at 3:23 pmIt is better to see this resolution dead rather than to see thousands of Americans and Iranians dead.
September 26th, 2008 at 3:34 pmmuahaha
September 26th, 2008 at 7:56 pmmusic to my ears
sohbetSallie Mae put a hold on that and actually has the nerve to tell you on the phone that it’s not is not good for students to consolidate econmically based on the current rates. So getting 7% instead of 10 to 18+ is bad? Come on lol.
April 26th, 2009 at 12:52 pmcetCompanies like that have been pushing deregulation in that market heavily. They’ve removed Bedava mp3 indirbasic bankruptcy protections entirely. They’ve managed to get things federally guaranteed.
