Pakistan warned U.S. troops not to intrude on its territory, “after the two anti-terror allies traded fire along the volatile border with Afghanistan.” The clash was “the first serious exchange with Pakistani forces acknowledged by the U.S.” Pakistan’s president said that only “flares” were fired at the U.S. troops.
“If money isn’t loosened up, this sucker could go down,” said President Bush at a White House meeting yesterday “as he watched the $700 billion bailout package fall apart before his eyes.” In a statement outside the White House this morning, Bush attempted to project confidence in an eventual deal, saying, “There is no disagreement that something substantial must be done.”
Yesterday, the federal government seized troubled lender Washington Mutual and then “brokered an emergency sale” of the bank to JPMorgan Chase for $1.9 billion. Washington Mutual’s collapse represented the “largest bank failure in American history,” and “JPMorgan Chase will absorb at least $31 billion in losses that would normally have fallen to the F.D.I.C.”
Although Gov. Sarah Palin (R-AK) “has made a crackdown on gift-giving to state officials a centerpiece of her ethics reform agenda,” she has accepted 41 gifts “valued at $25,367 from industry executives, municipalities and a cultural center whose board includes officials” from large mining interests. These gifts include free travel, expensive artwork, and “a gold-nugget pin valued at $1,200.”
On the trail today: Barack Obama and John McCain are scheduled to debate today in Oxford, MS. If the debate takes place, ThinkProgress will be live-blogging it. Stay tuned.
Federal prosecutors attempted to paint Sen. Ted Stevens (R-AK) “as a savvy career politician who surreptitiously accepted valuable gifts.” Stevens’s attorney, “characterized the government’s accusations as inaccurate” and argued that Stevens was innocently subjected to the “whims of a friend, who at times delivered unwanted gifts and even failed to bill Stevens for the renovation project.”
Newsweek’s Eleanor Clift writes in response to former Rep. Newt Gingrich’s rejection of Henry Paulson’s Wall Street bailout proposal: “Newt is back doing what he loves to do,: challenging a sitting president of his own party, inciting insurrection among conservatives, and in his own words, ‘having a ball.’”
“Israel gave serious thought this spring to launching a military strike on Iran’s nuclear sites but was told by President George W. Bush that he would not support it and did not expect to revise that view for the rest of his presidency, senior European diplomatic sources have told the Guardian.” Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert floated the idea to Bush during his May visit to Israel.
Scientific figures released today shows the “rise in global carbon dioxide emissions last year outpaced international researchers’ most dire projections,” with a 2.9 percent increase in carbon emissions in 2007. The rise “could translate into a global temperature rise of more than 11 degrees Fahrenheit by the end of the century, according to the panel’s estimates.”
“The chairman of the Republican Party in New Mexico’s most populous county resigned” yesterday, nearly a week after he declared that “Hispanics consider themselves above blacks. They won’t vote for a black president.” The official, Fernando C. de Baca, claimed he was stepping down because of “the media circus that has developed.”
And finally: Ohio farmer Duke Wheeler “would like to invite you to get lost inside the head” of Gov. Sarah Palin (R-AK). Wheeler has turned his 16-acre cornfield into a maze in Palin’s likeness. He said it took “an artist from Idaho at least eight hours to mow down stalks for the maze.” View a picture of the creation here.

Sarah Palin’s own words: “It was so gratifying to be a part of a bipartisan effort, where the focus was on doing the right thing for the people of Alaska,” said Gov. Palin. “Comprehensive ethics reform was a priority of mine. HB 109 is a good first step toward changing the culture of politics as usual.” Oh, the hypocrisy, she is nothing more than a watered down version of Ted Stevens in the making. Palin has learned from one of the biggest criminals in Alaskan history. John McCain said it best when he called Palin his “soul mate”, they are in more ways than one…

September 26th, 2008 at 10:12 amHere’s the Republicans play. And it is a crafty one.
They want to paint the Democratic Majority and Obama with Bush. They want to tell voters that all those terrible Democrats want is to give away all your money to those greedy bastards on Wall Street and Bush wants to help them. “Here we are the ‘fiscally responsible’ Republicans that are trying to save you from… (wait for it)… SOCIALISM!!!”
They are going to blame a very unpopular President and the enemy (Democrats) for the fact that this aid bill isn’t going to pass. They are seriously playing Russian Roulette with countries financial health so they can win an election. Country first indeed.
How can they do this? Well they can say that they put forward a alternative proposal for saving the economy. Of course that proposal is nothing but more of the same thing that got us here in the first place, but they think that the public isn’t smart enough to see that.

September 26th, 2008 at 10:17 amI think McBush has made a serious mistake in throwing his future into the hands of the neoCons. He hadn’t even read the bill the neoCons want passed by the time he was sitting in the White House. I’m betting he hadn’t even been briefed as to what was in the bill. He just latched on to it because it was a way to stop the “deal” from going through. If the “deal” went through, he would have to show up at the debate tonight.
Now, if the alternate bill was kind to homeowners losing their homes and put less of a burden on the taxpayer, McCain might have a winning hand. But, that is not the bill the neoCons want passed. So, what is McCain going to do? He said he was rushing to Washington to “save the day” for the people on Main Street, so does he throw his support behind the alternative bill that supports corporations or does he support the legislation they were going to put forth yesterday and look like a bloody fool?
September 26th, 2008 at 10:22 amIts amazing that millionaires and billionaires can squander established institutions into oblivion and get rewarded for it. Its enough for me to get through the day having enough money just to get by. Where’s my bailout?! Part of that money is mine and most every other American’s. And now J.P. Morgan Chase is buying whats left of Washington Mutual. We lose another entity on paper, but the assets and probably most of the people just change their name tag to Chase. Just another neocon financial contrivance to centralize and concentrate the money into a smaller institutional sector so as to better control and manipulate it. We’re losing our homes, our jobs, our savings and pensions and Wall Street gets rewarded with our money. This is not a financial accident. The robber-barons are winning again just like they did in the 1920’s. Why do they get to totally screw everything up for us and we have to pay for it?
September 26th, 2008 at 10:24 amMr.Bungle Says: but they think that the public isn’t smart enough to see that.
I’d say it would behoove Congress to put the bailout proposals on the web so anyone who;s interested can take a look at it BEFORE anyone casts a vote, just so we have a verifiable idea of what is actually being proposed.
BTW even if the plan is actually as considered and responsible as possible let’s not forget that Bush could still attach one of his famous signing statements to emasculate the whole thing and reward special interests.
September 26th, 2008 at 10:25 amIf I had squandered my money and then went to my bank for even $700 to help me get back on my feet, I’d be shot down in flames (sorry, no McCain reference intended). Yet, when the situation is reversed, the banks act as it is their right to get $700,000,000,000 to bail them out.
September 26th, 2008 at 10:25 amMr.Bungle Says:
I agree wholeheartedly Mr. Bungle. The Congressional Republican block is a political maneuver orchestrated by the WH and the McCain camp. As soon as I heard that they stood up in defiance of Cheney I smelled a rat. These lackies have marched lockstep with the WH for eight years. NOW they suddenly find their own voice? It’s a veiled attempt to stand with McCain against the WH and the Dems in desperate hope that their bases will rally voted for their upcoming re-election hopes. I find it laughable that these party-before-country losers suddenlt decided to be fiscally responsible and stand up against corporate welfare! A poor political stunt to aid their and McCain’s political aspirations at the expense of the Country. It’s actually exactly what they’ve been doing, obstructing legislation, for the last year and a half, the only difference being the feined disapproval of Herr Bush and support of McSame.

September 26th, 2008 at 10:56 amI want to see the agreement, if one is reached, on this economic bail-out. I want to see if the dems stood up for the citizens and put in that the bancruptcy courts are given the power to restructure the mortgages under this bill. If Obama continues to say that such should not be part of this bill, of what value is he for the base that got him to this position? If this is not done now, at least a million more people will lose their homes and nothing will be done to help them. There will be no relief passed when this bill is passed because the crisis will be seen to be dealt with.

I don’t think the Bailout should be rushed. Not something as comprehensive as this. What they should start off with is relief to the homeowners that were given bad loans first. Get that out front and resolve it. Then move on from there. I don’t believe that rewarding these Financial Institutions CEO’s and Executive’s that put large bonuses first to the tune of 33 billion before good investments is a prudent move. They are part of the problem and are responsible for this occuring. I have to agree with Naomi Klein on this one…
Plus the FBI is going to have to investigate all of them for fraud. They need to make sure that the banks can lend money to the average people that need loans for small businesses, college loans, and home loans. But putting all the bad debt on the American People is not fair to us the taxpayer that is footing the bill. You have to be wary of anything that Paulson wants to do… Another thought why would Buffett invest 5 billion dollars into Goldman Sachs once Paulson made his announcement… They are truly not to be trusted.
