Proposition 8, a California constitutional amendment that would ban same-sex marriage, has attracted an unlikely assortment of foes, including Vice President Cheney’s daughter Mary, Brad Pitt, and Steven Spielberg. Yesterday, Google also took the unusual step of jumping in, noting that because it has a “great diversity of people and opinions” at the company, it rarely takes “a position on issues outside of our field, especially not social issues”:
However, while there are many objections to this proposition — further government encroachment on personal lives, ambiguously written text — it is the chilling and discriminatory effect of the proposition on many of our employees that brings Google to publicly oppose Proposition 8. While we respect the strongly-held beliefs that people have on both sides of this argument, we see this fundamentally as an issue of equality. We hope that California voters will vote no on Proposition 8 — we should not eliminate anyone’s fundamental rights, whatever their sexuality, to marry the person they love.
Good for Google! Well done!
September 27th, 2008 at 8:58 pmProposition 8 will have no effect on peoples’ life styles. It only removes the insurance and social benefits that hose who choose a life style different from most Americans. Next, they will try to ban Hispanic and Black marriages!
September 27th, 2008 at 8:58 pmhose s/b those.
September 27th, 2008 at 9:00 pmKeep in mind that these anti same sex marriage initiatives are created as magnets to attract “cave men” voters to the polls where they will also vote for McPain/Stalin.
Their ace in the hole is that they now have almost complete control over the voting machines and the public is still asleep although the looting of 401K/Retirement accounts is beginning to stir what could be a great awakening amongst the sheeples.
September 27th, 2008 at 9:02 pmGood for Google.
September 27th, 2008 at 9:41 pmGood for The Google. One thing though. It’s one thing to respect the fact that people may have differing opinions. It’s another thing to respect those opinions themselves. There are many opinions from the right wing that I simply will never respect. And their Biblical notions about homosexuality are among them.

I like “hose” better. As in, “it only removes insurance and social benefits, which will hose people whose sexual orientation is different from most Americans.”
September 27th, 2008 at 9:55 pmNot sure if this is off topic, but TP’s advertisement is asking me if I can learn to walk in high heels. :)
I say a ban on same sex marriages is a violation of the XIV Amendment—and it doesn’t matter what your state says. It is the same as discrimination against African-Americans or against Jews.
September 27th, 2008 at 10:09 pmAll this sexual orientation is like baseball fans. Should every Yankee fan be banned from Boston and every Red Sox fan be banned from NY? I am straight, by the way! Things happen and one should ride with the flow. I have a niece who is lesbian, but that was influenced by a father who abused her. Let the dice fall where they may.

Hmmm… wouldn’t it be… more… apropos… to, ahem, say…
“Let the trousers drop where they may”?
BTW.. where’s Darryl? I can’t believe he’s missing this one… saaaay… where’d Raoul, the cabana boy go??? What… you say, you saw him w/ Darryl? About 20 minutes ago? Walking off together?

Huh?
Are you saying that heterosexuality is the result of NO abuse? Sexual orientation is not caused by abuse, otherwise there would be A LOT more gay people.
And yeah, I can’t wait for a troglodyte like Darryl to jump in with his 2nd century beliefs.
September 27th, 2008 at 11:11 pmMy rant, and it’s OT but I want people to see it:
I am sick and tired of supporting red states. I hail from the state of Minnesota which receives LESS THAN HALF of every dollar of Federal Taxes I pay in.
I think it’s time for a blue States revolt. I am tired of paying higher property taxes so my children can receive an adequate education. I’m tired of the argument over federal dollars so that my neighbors can not qualify for S-CHIP because MY state doesn’t disqualify the parents of children who qualify for this benefit.
Should not, my state, be allowed to decide whether of not to extend health insurance to the parents of these children utilizing addition STATE funds? Why should those of you who receive a far higher return on investment decide how WE who live in state who actually CARE about our people decide how the dismal amount of money we receive be spent?
What in cripes name is wrong with you people????? I thought you were all about loving *States Rights* & oh yeah, Jesus. I guess that only applies to the Confederate Flag or the Ten Commandments.
I’d like some equity here. You red states who claim to be so good for business. PAY YOUR FAIR SHARE! I’m frankly tired of subsidizing your sorry as*ses.
Again, I sorry for being so OT but da*n it, I’ve had enough.
September 27th, 2008 at 11:29 pmMost people conduct themselves during daily business as human beings. They interact, they make deals, they agree, they disagree. And most of these interactions are done each and every day respectfully. Politicians on the other hand don’t do much of anything respectfully. Politicians, for the most part, suck. Dick Cheney would toss his lesbian daughter into the abyss if he thought it would give him an edge to acquiring world domination. That’s how disconnected he is. Someone needs to educate me as to how politicians feel it is their right and necessity to dictate how people have sex. Its just sex for cryin’ out loud!!! Why do they try to equivocate homosexual sex with the total destruction of the world? At the very least, they try to convince you that homosexual partners in life would have broken up Ward and June Cleaver. If Eddie Haskel counldn’t do it, no one could!
September 27th, 2008 at 11:29 pmWe really need to inform our politicians that, basically, we’ve had enough of their bullshit! No More Fear!
We have to invest in our government by force (IRS). Well, now we finally expect our return! IT’S OUR MONEY!!!
Sorry to rant. I’m just pissed off and I don’t see anyone else that is and should be.
They are stealing $700,000,000,000 in broad daylight OF OUR MONEY!!! And they keep trying to sell you the dreaded homosexual inuendo. And most brain-dead, American Idol addict Americans still buy into that incredibly stupid wedge issue. God damn people, wake the fu(k up!
When will we finally realize that you cannot kill yourself into righteousness!!!
Woo hoo!

September 28th, 2008 at 12:34 amOoops, sorry.
September 28th, 2008 at 12:35 amWow, google came out against prop 8. Shocking … er’ given their liberal bent am I the only one that is suprised?
It won’t make a difference. Contrary to popular belief, Californa is full of traditional families with conservative values. California is not defined by the values of san fransicko as most of you think it is. California voters passed proposition 22 “Marriage between man and woman” with 61%. Four “rupublican” judges overturned it stating that it was unconstitutional. Notice that it was REPUBLICAN judges did this for the gays. The same party that ended slavery despite objections from … huh … democrats. Go figure!!!
Prop 8 will most likely pass. But if somehow it does not, then I don’t see why poligamists, beastialitist, and every alternative lifestyle group will come out of the woodwork demanding fairness in the name of “equality.”
Open up the tin can and all of the worms will come out.
September 28th, 2008 at 12:38 amWhenever I see some troll try to pretend that the Democratic Party of today is equivalent to the Democratic Party of Lincoln’s time, I begin to wonder if we should have national education standards, so that they don’t make stupid statements like that out of ignorance.
September 28th, 2008 at 12:56 amMost in Calif. are against the prop:
Opposition to Prop. 8 up to 55%, poll shows
The frenzied rapture ready lose again.

September 28th, 2008 at 1:51 amThere’s that cool judgment that we have all come to hate. Kinda like mccain claiming he had to rush back to dc to save the day, same fantasy world concocted in the darkest recesses of the human mind.
The perverts are mostly republican I would guess, much as the child molesters are heteroxexual church going members of the family values bunch, not homosexuals.
September 28th, 2008 at 1:57 amWhat part of discrimination do people not understand….oooohhh they’re different than me….so I hate them….what part of Jesus do the Jesus people not understand.
Yeah, I am an atheist, but that does not make Jesus’ teachings wrong.
the god thing, not so much
September 28th, 2008 at 2:22 amGOOGLE FOR PRESIDENT.
The most impressively run and incredibly successful e-corporation EVER.
Hell, they even upset the investment crowd by offering their IPO through a lottery, effectively thwarting the “hot-potato” selling, price inflation and subsequent price crash of most IPO trading within the first few weeks, AND LOOK HOW STRONG THEY’VE PREFORMED SINCE!

September 28th, 2008 at 10:38 amPG&E (Pacific Gas and Electric), the utility company has come out in opposition to Prop 8.
Tim43 if you ever make it out to California: we’ll welcome you with open arms (and maybe even a kiss on the cheek) then tell you how utterly wrong you are!
[Tim, you may want to check on parts of TX, AZ, CO & UT for that polygamy that you appear to be worried about happening if Pop. 8 is defeated]
September 28th, 2008 at 1:01 pmGoogle just had the 10th birthday and they seem to also have achieved adult understanding! My favorite search engine just got more points.
No laws should be passed to limit the rights of any percentage of the population. Minority, majority, whatever. Our rights are our rights, and anyone who thinks rights should be limited is an un-American fascist (that would be you, Tim 43).

What you say is good to know, but could WaltTheMan’s niece possibly be a lesbian because she was abused?
Since you implore, “Please educate yourself,” what exactly is it you mean? To bit you seem to be saying learn something so WaltTheMan will agree with rf7777.
What exactly is it rf777 wants WaltTheMan to learn?
bit read this from the APA brouchure on same-same gender sexual expression:
bit reads this to mean that the cause is unknown, but it certainly doesn’t rule out abuse as a contributing factor in same-same gender attraction. Does rf7777 agree?
Does rf7777 know something that APA doesn’t know?
September 29th, 2008 at 2:51 pmAs is always the case, I am still trying to get someone, anyone to explain to me just how gay marriage threatens nongay marriage
If CA is allowed to legalize same sex marriage, then they will start teaching all our children that same sex marriage is “normal”. Conservative groups are fighting to keep same sex education out of the public schools. There is prof that these teachings are already happening. A first grade class took a school-sponsored trip to a gay wedding in San Francisco.
If same sex marriage is to be taught in the schools, I think prayer and religious teachings should be allowed as well. I would say that if parents don’t like what is being taught in the public schools then take them out. Oh, but CA is against that as well.
October 12th, 2008 at 10:04 amThe people of California should make its laws – not our judges. I’ve seen many rather silly arguments against gay marriage, many of which have indeed been homophobic. But I believe there are many good reasons to support Proposition 8. Space does not permit a full treatment, but please consider the following:
October 13th, 2008 at 2:32 amFirst, any radical redefinition of marriage is very likely to result in a host of unintended consequences. For starters, how will future judges logically prohibit polygamy if gay marriage continues as the law of the land?
If two men or two women should have the “right” of marriage, why should such a “right” be withheld from one man and two women or two women and one man or any other number of combinations? What about the almost inevitable legal and social attacks against churches that refuse to perform gay marriages? Sure, gay activists tell us they won’t care what churches do so long as they can have a civil marriage ceremony.
But isn’t that what they also said about domestic partner rights – that marriage wouldn’t be needed if those laws were passed?
What, in the long run, will be best for our society? The preservation of traditional marriage, which encourages a man and a woman to wed and raise children together, thereby preserving social stability, or radical re-definitions that completely re-shape the family unit? Of course there are some gay couples who are better equipped to raise children than some heterosexual couples. But laws should not be based on exceptions.
October 13th, 2008 at 2:34 amI support Prop 8, not out of animus to any person or any group of people, but out of a concern for the impact which changing the definition of marriage will have on children, on religious freedom, on the freedom of speech, and on society as a whole. We need only look at other states and countries that have allowed same-sex marriages to get a small understanding of some of the far-reaching effects that a redefinition of marriage will have. In Massachusetts, teachers were allowed to require grade-schoolers to read books about gay marriage without informing parents nor requiring the parent’s consent; and a Catholic adoption agency was required to place adoptions with gay couples even though it was contrary to their religious beliefs, forcing the adoption agency to close its doors instead. In the Netherlands, following the legalization of same-sex marriage, there was a general decline in marriage across the whole society. Similar impacts can be expected for California, and many other unknown effects, if Proposition 8 is unsuccessful. Marriage is something more than just a civil right – marriages have existed long before governments chose to recognize them, and it should not be the place of government to go and redefine marriage now. Vote Yes on Prop 8.
October 18th, 2008 at 8:37 pmWhat? Who sold you this faulty bill of goods? Show me the impact that traditional marriage has on religious freedom, freedom of speech and society as a whole.
We have a 50% divorce rate and I guarantee the other 50% aren’t dancing in the streets. You think redefining values with the along with advancement in civil rights and advancement in human understanding is wrong?
I’m straight and successful and frankly it’s none of my business if my neighbors want a same sex marriage.
If you don’t want to marry someone of the same sex, cool, don’t do it.
But how dare you try to deny the rights of others because you don’t want to have to explain it to your ugly child.
Small understanding is an exaggeration. Try no understanding. The facts you state here are not only false, but they are extremely ignorant.
Let me guess… your pastor told you right?
Are you suggesting that granting same sex marriages in the Netherlands is the cause of a society-wide anti-marriage epidemic? That’s ludicrous.
Well… by that method of thinking, we should still have slavery.
I mean… hey, it’s been around LONG before the governments that invented laws to prohibit it.
Look… we don’t fight religious wars in this country. If you really want to go on a crusade for god, move to the middle east. There are plenty of people over there just like you. They are content living in the bronze age and want nothing to do with redefining things that have been around for thousands of years.
Sounds like you’ll fit right in.
No on 8… It’s none of our business.
October 22nd, 2008 at 7:26 amThis seems like such an obvious issue to me. I suspect that’s what people on the other side of the fence think too. Anyway, Google, well done.

RIGHT!!! PROPS TO DA5ID!!! Just because you vote yes of Prop 8 doesn’t mean homeosexuality is going to go away. Its still going to be there and the children are going to figure it out. Who cares what someone else is doing or having sex with. Its there life and there life style. Your not in their bedroom with them. How would you like it if a bill passed that prevented you from getting hitched to the one you love. Its absolutly rediculous. Love is Love….Wouldn’t you rather live in a world of people who love each other rather than hatred. Come on get your priority right…Good Job Google
