After declaring he’d return to Washington to help with the bailout negotiations immediately after last night’s debate, Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) never went to Capitol Hill today. In fact, McCain stayed largely holed up in his Arlington apartment, leaving only to go to his campaign headquarters just around the block, the New York Times reports:
Asked why Mr. McCain did not go to Capitol Hill after coming back to Washington to help with negotiations, [McCain adviser] Mr. Salter replied that “he can effectively do what he needs to do by phone.’’
If he can effectively give his input over the phone, then why couldn’t he do that yesterday? Why did he have to run back to Washington DC to be a help (by blowing the whole deal up)?
September 27th, 2008 at 7:46 pmAw, poor baby. He was just tooooo tired!
September 27th, 2008 at 7:48 pmSeeing McCain in the debate last night, all I could think of was that they botoxed his left eye and shot him full of amphetamines to keep him going. He certainly looked much more animated last night than he has for a very long time. So, what happens the next day after being loaded up with amphetamines? You crash.

September 27th, 2008 at 7:51 pmThe American People: Are you mad me John? What did I do?
John McCain: I pulled a stunt, and you should have jumped on the bandwagon!
September 27th, 2008 at 7:53 pmMccain and Salter are lying liars who have no shame.
Recently, McCain cancelled his appearance on David Letterman calling Letterman at the last minute stating he had to race to the airport to work on the bailout negotiations. However, McCain was caught getting his makeup applied to do a interview with Katie Couric during the time he was to be racing the airport. (There is footage of this as well.) Further, McCain did not leave for Washington until the next day even!
Come on! If this is such a huge economic crisis, shouldn’t it warrant negotiations that are done in person?
Maybe McCain really is helping. This is the most effective strategy McCain has concocted to date and that strategy is to stay the hell away from Capitol Hill.
September 27th, 2008 at 7:55 pmMcCain never showed up at Capitol Hill for bailout negotiations today.
– - I don’t blame him after he got his ass handed to him last night. Did he send Palin instead, yanno, to jot down some Cliff’s Notes talking points?
September 27th, 2008 at 7:55 pmThe Great White Knight is a little tarnished?
September 27th, 2008 at 7:57 pmIt’s nappy time for Old McOld; why he’s all tuckered out from that 90 minute talk down at Old Miss last night.
Just hmm along: “This old man, he played one, he played knick-nack on my bone, knick-nack paddy-wack, give a Bush-crime-family a $700B bone, this old man came rolling home…”
September 27th, 2008 at 8:00 pmHis feet hurt from standing for the debates, I mean when you’re all tense and cussing threw your teeth it can make for a tiring evening.
But still my wife and I had one word to describe McGonnaDieSoon at the debate last night….
….CREEPY.
September 27th, 2008 at 8:01 pmIf he can effectively give his input over the phone, then why couldn’t he do that yesterday?
Simple answer — there aren’t any “photo ops” in that!
I am sure that McNumbNuts was hanging around his condo (1)licking his wounds after last night’s drubbing, (2) trying to figure out some creative way to throw Failin’ Palin under the bus before Thursday and (3) swearing at the five Senators who no doubt called him this morning and said “thanks but no thanks — if we need you to come in, we’ll call you back”.
September 27th, 2008 at 8:01 pmHardcore lying and skipping out on your obligations is supposed to happen AFTER you get elected, not before. McCain gives an entirely new meaning to the word “transparency” in government: you can see right through him.
September 27th, 2008 at 8:03 pmHe’s got a record.
Of not showing up.
And when he does, doing nothing.
September 27th, 2008 at 8:04 pm4. Whirlaway – well at least he’s discovered how to telephone across town. Since he had to go to DC to telephone his friends, I dont’ think he’s figures out long distance.
Dumb Question: Could the phone companies come up with a way to dial a phone out of your local area? Perhaps start dialing with a 1 followed by the area code ?
September 27th, 2008 at 8:04 pmMr. Salter replied that “he can effectively do what he needs to do by phone.’’
…since Pizza Hut now delivers past midnight.
September 27th, 2008 at 8:08 pmIt should be patently obvious that McIIIrd doesn’t know shit about any of this financial stuff.
September 27th, 2008 at 8:12 pmHe gets his lobbyist staff bank/WallStreet/Corwhoreporate talking points, and is completely confused as to where to stuff them.
And we are assumed to be a bunch of moronic amnesiacs or something… its alright as an excuse for not showing up today, but not good enough to avoid going to Washington in the first place? WTF?
September 27th, 2008 at 8:14 pmIt was a stunt to get the debates moved to obliterate the VP debate.
September 27th, 2008 at 8:28 pmObama called his bluff, it didn’t work.
So why should he bother going through with the charade?
(’ceptin’ of course personal honor and admitting you weee lying and stuff…)

That, or he drowned his sorrows in a bottle of booze over his poor showing at the debate.
Either way, he’s hold up in a dark room, nursing the granddaddy of all hangovers.

September 27th, 2008 at 8:51 pmMcStain is busy working on his next headline-grabbing crisis or stunt.
I think it’s going to be Palin, I’m just not sure how stunning the theatrics will be.
It’s been noticed on other sites that, every time Obama has the nation’s attention, J. Sidney does something stunning to steal the limelight. Obama does well overseas, “celebrity” and “avoids the troops” ads air immediately. Obama has a phenomenal convention speech, out comes Princess Wasilla. Obama soars in the polls, McStain has to “suspend” his campaign and rush back to D.C. (except he didn’t and he didn’t)
He’s going to another Biggie, just not sure what, but as I said, I’m sure it will prevent Thursday’s VP debate.

September 27th, 2008 at 8:52 pmI feel a sense of embarrassment concerning Palin debating Biden Oct 2. It is almost too cruel…. the world will be laughing and in front of her children.
September 27th, 2008 at 8:59 pmOT, but please, I need some input. Today I received a flier from the Obama campaign with a pre-addressed, postage paid “request for absentee ballot” card. I’m worried because I heard that something like this happened in Wisconsin with the wrong address printed on the cards. The address on this card is:
Campaign for Change
1771 E 9th Ave
Tampa, FL 33605-9940
I don’t live in Tampa, I live near Miami, but the problem is when I looked up that zip code on google I got no results. And looking up Campaign for Change in Tampa gave me a different address.

You need someone to take a dump for you? I’ll get on it right away, sir!
September 27th, 2008 at 9:01 pmMcCain was too tired after working hard to control his emotions during Friday’s debate. It’s been a tough week for him. First the manic stage started where he had to lie to Letterman and cancel his appearance so that he could meet with Couric instead and then he had to rush off to Washington DC and stir up some trouble there. And then Obama called his bluff and he had to go to Mississippi and debate with the person he hates the most. At some point the mania stops and the depression sets in and he needs to retreat from the public. He is old. He needs his rest.
September 27th, 2008 at 9:03 pmI would be willing to place money on that one. She won’t show up next Thursday. A crises in Alaska is coming and the Sarah must return. Could it be Putin raising his head?

You gotta love it. Under any other circumstances a shot-gun wedding would be a total embarrassment. And they want to make it into a wedding to compete with Charles and Di getting married. Suspend the campaign for a week for a shot-gun wedding? Right…
September 27th, 2008 at 9:17 pmThere won’t be a wedding. If it was going to happen, it would have already occurred.
September 27th, 2008 at 9:18 pmMcCain is trying to figure out an excuse to dump sister Sarah. His desperate ill-conceived decision to name her as his runningmate is costing him more votes than if he’d gone with his first choice Joe Lieberman. With polls showing undecided voters moving toward Obama after last night’s debate, the prospects of sister Sarah’s upcoming debate blowing him completely out of the water is scaring him to death. The problem he now has is, how can he dump sister Sarah without pissing off the very people he was trying to attract by naming her in the first place? Let her debate Joe Biden and his presidential aspirations are toast because voters from “every” political faction will move to Obama out of fear of Sarah Palin being one heartbeat away from the presidency. Come up with a phony excuse to get rid of her and the religious right crucifies him. He genuinely deserves to be in a lose/lose scenario of his own making.
September 27th, 2008 at 9:19 pmAnyone want to bet the reason why he stayed away is because he was told to by his Republican brethren? I’m betting they called him and told him not to show up. They don’t want him playing politics with what they are trying to do and they know he has nothing to contribute since he still hasn’t read either of the proposals.

September 27th, 2008 at 9:45 pmLooks like Mr. Straight Talk’s “here I come to save the day” statement that he will participate in the bailout negotiations is nothing but bull from Gramps. And for Gramps McSame to just talk phone calls on the bailout negotiations is just a cop out. Anybody on this blog can do that. Gramps is just not needed for negotiations because he is clueless and would be waste of time. Since his first debut debate with Obama didn’t go well from him according to the poll numbers, the media, and newspapers, he is using any excuse in the book to claim that he is concerned for American people in this economic crisis.

Then where does old pardon guy fit in?
Hard to control the media noise at that point.

I looked up that zip code on google I got no results.
Zip codes for postal boxes are not the same as for the surrounding area sometimes. The post office that delivers to 32084 here has P.O. Boxes with the zip code 32085. I wonder if the USPS gives a unique zip code to private mail box providers. It would make sense to not spend the time (incur the cost) to presort mail for a private company.
Shady businesses like a real sounding address and using suite numbers in lieu of P.O. Boxes to give an air of legitimacy to themselves.

September 27th, 2008 at 10:44 pmCNN reports that McCain didn’t go to Congress today because he could accomplish what he needed to do by making phone calls [ This after the strange drama earlier in the week including his swat-teaming into Washington, screwing up the agreement-in-principal, and then going back on his pledge to not debate unless there was a deal on the bailout ]:
http://politicalticker.blogs.cnn.com/2008/09/27/mccain-now-not-going-to-capitol-hill-today/
His campaign promised that they would [ and did, see the CNN update ] release a list of the calls that Sen. McCain made in the afternoon.
Considering that he was touting the night before in the debate about his bipartisan credentials, the list is remarkably devoid of any “reaching across the aisle.” The call list is entirely made of Republicans [ I went through each name, just to make sure ] and mostly hard-core conservatives at that. Not a Democrat in sight. So much for his bucking his party and his “maverick” image.
September 27th, 2008 at 10:44 pmAfter the far less than stellar interviews Palin’s had, I find it inconceivable that the McCain campaign would allow her to debate Biden next week. I’m rather sure some kind of emergency will come up. Probably a “miscarriage,” or the baby gets really sick and perhaps Palin will then drop out of the race for family reasons. Frankly, I still think the baby is Palin’s daughter’s (a pregnancy that NO ONE noticed, even her own kids?), and then suddenly they come clean by stating the daughter IS actually pregnant and NO WAY she could have had the little boy. Why two lies would somehow be better than one is beyond me, but these ARE Republicans and their minds seem to work that way.

Bristol’s wedding — wbenever it happens — will merit some news coverage. But it’s not going to knock anybody off the front page. Not with a presidential election campaign going on. And certainly not with the economy the way it is.

Frank Rich gives the Play-by-Play for Sen. McCain’s latest Hail Mary..
http://www.nytimes.com/2008/09/28/opinion/28rich.html?_r=1&hp&oref=slogin
To put these 24 hours in context, you must remember that McCain not only knows little about the economy but that he has not previously expressed any urgency about its meltdown. It was on Sept. 15 — the day after his former idol Alan Greenspan pronounced the current crisis a “once-in-a-century” catastrophe — that McCain reaffirmed for the umpteenth time that the “fundamentals of our economy are strong.” As recently as Tuesday he had not yet even read the two-and-a-half-page bailout proposal first circulated by Hank Paulson last weekend.
Then came Black Wednesday , when he awoke to discover that Barack Obama had surged ahead by nine percentage points in the Washington Post/ABC News poll. The McCain campaign hastily suited up its own pollster to belittle that finding — only to be drowned out by a fusillade of new polls from Fox News, Marist and CNN/Time, each with numbers closer to Post/ABC than not. Obama was rising most everywhere except the moose strongholds of Alaska and Montana.
That was not the only bad news raining down on McCain. His camp knew what Katie Couric had in the can from her interview with Sarah Palin.
Bigger still was the mounting evidence of the seamless synergy between his campaign and Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, the mortgage monsters at the heart of the housing bust that set off our current calamity. Most of all, it was the fast-moving events on that front that precipitated his panic to roll out his diversionary, over-the-top theatrics on Wednesday.
It’s then that McCain suddenly emerged to bark that our financial distress was “the greatest crisis we’ve faced, clearly, since World War II” — even greater than the Russia-Georgia conflict, which in August he had called the “first probably serious crisis internationally since the end of the cold war.”
He may be the first presidential candidate in our history to risk wrecking the country even before being voted into the Oval Office.
